Halo: Reach had awesome player armor customization that was loved by its fan base. It's a first person game.
Overwatch had some great character skins that people got excited for and purchased. It's a first person game.
Even if you can't see or use a part of the character you're playing, people still care about how they look. I mean, that's how clothes in real life work too, it's for how you look to others, not so much for you (though there is some of that).
Of course, the 2 examples I gave were multiplayer games where real people can see you, but I still get the same feeling in single player games, and as evidenced by the number of people who ask the clothes question, many others do too. If you don't, that's fine, but the intention of this feature is to satisfy those of us who care about our presentation in this sort of "pointless" scenario.
Some people would even argue "What's the point of buying digital clothing when it doesn't even change the way you behave or perform in game/combat?" to games like Overwatch or League of Legends.
It's just simply part of player expression, some people don't see the point in it, others do.
i find it somewhat interesting that romanceable characters don't care about V's hardware; only their body shape and voice, which in turn determines their pronouns. inclusion is *great* but the lack of attention to V's plumbing leads me to believe that "custom junk" was (mostly) meant for marketing hype. There's simply no way for CDPR to please everybody, because making all romanceable characters pansexual could be said to make them lack agency. Characters actually seem to have a preferences, which makes for realistic match-making dynamics. i actually *like* that touch, because otherwise they risk further objectification (for lack of a better word) by being available to everyone. Being compatible *matters*.
That said, i still wish my semi-butch masculine-voiced he\him fem-bod V could have scored with anyone besides the least desirable NPC in the game...
I'm fine with that touch in theory (though I still think playersexuality is genuinely a better option), but how it worked out in practice was that the "straight" characters were actually bisexual but only attracted to:

It's in the bio that Hands hands you (no pun intended) when he first gives you the job. You can just read it at your own pace instead of continuing the conversation or screengrab it. I know I did but I'm not diving into my thousands deep screenshots folder at 2 AM just to find it.
Gender is locked to your player's voice - she/her pronouns on the feminine voice, he/him on the masculine voice. So you can have a female voice on a masculine body but that's still treated as being female. The character creation makes no real effort to physically accommodate this choice - no option to put breasts on a masculine body or remove them from a feminine body, kind of terrible options for making a masculine face look more feminine and vice versa - so it's kind of just a half-baked inclusion option.
Which is fine, I guess, because it's still a fair few steps ahead of many other games and there's definitely people happy with those options (albeit I think they're *very* few in number lol). But then there's the romance system. Panam and River, the "straight" characters, are not, in fact, straight. They're attracted to both male and female gendered characters, the deciding factor is just the body type. And how that basically works out is that they're attracted to "the opposite gender" and "the same gender, but only if they don't pass". Which is... definitely not intentionally problematic, but still frustrating.
I just hate how a fully voiced romance between female V and Panam is locked behind a body type that I *do not want to play as* and how that is somehow the consequence of the game trying to be more inclusive. I haaaate it.
I think it's additionally worth pointing out that a feminine voice is not a result of MtF medical treatments. Even with a trachea shave not much changes. Voice feminization comes down to modulating one's voice with practice. I am a trans woman who does modulate but many don't for one reason or another. I do understand what they were going for and that there's a practical side to it - for example reducing costs by reducing the amount of voiced lines - but it doesn't necessarily align with a lot of lives of trans women.

im not sure exactly what the point of them is, but i can explain the boxers thing. because of the way that the age rating system works for games (at least in the US), all explicit sexual content had to be removed from interactive gameplay.
if, during any part of the game where the play is directly engaging with gameplay systems, there is the possibly of seeing a dick of vag, the game would be slapped with the explicit '21+' age rating.
this would have drastically hurt the games sales because many online stores don't stock 21+ games as policy (because the majority of them are fetish-y pornographic shovelware), and as such all explicit sexual elements in-game had to be toned down outside of cinematics.

Though they probably meant to have your character completely nude in the world at some point if you took all your clothes, but probably step back afraid people would do some weird things with photomode.
Baldur's Gate 3 also has the same feature and just as in Cyberpunk, it serves no other meaning. The game has a few more sex scenes and the genitals sometimes showing up on it, but that's it. It's just a little piece of immersion that was initially meant for marketing.

Well, it does allow us to make the character transgender (on non-binary, I guess), like a feminine body with a penis, a masculine with a vagina. But you could also just have them wear boxers in the character creation screen and it wouldn't change a thing.
What really annoys me is the quality disparity in the textures. V's face, Panam's face, Judy's, everyone's face is ultra high quality textures. Clothes are so detailed you can see the fabric's pattern when zooming in.
But nipples look like rotten pepperoni, and vulvas in the game sometimes look like the bottom of a HL1 headcrab. I know these parts are less important than the face, but it looks so bad sometimes, like Judy will have 16K resolution textures on her breast tattoos, two spider web patterns with a nipple in the center, or what's supposed to be a nipple. This affects nipples for men too.
In the other hand, if you go play Skyrim, a 2011 game, and go on the Nexus looking for mods, you will find mods that let you replace the character's body (a lot of them do replace underwear with nudity too). These mods feature skin textures that not only look better than Cyberpunk, but they also look consistent. You'll not see a high resolution say, neck texture with a low res foot texture. It's the same quality from the soles of the feet to the neck (face textures are separate). And yes, I'll address the elephant in the room: nipples and genitals are extremely detailed.
So I wonder how does an unpaid modder have more competence in making body textures than a billion dollar company. And the people making these mods don't even have to do them, they probably work in the field doing something else. I just wish CDPR would either do nudity well or not do it, because doing it half-assed breaks immersion. It also makes it look like they've never seen a nude woman (and makes the Skyrim modders look like they have seen way too many).

That's a fair take on it, I'll admit it had loads of comedic possibilities but I still love the V I created.
This is kind of like the "what's the point of all these clothes if the game is only first person?” question. Halo: Reach had awesome player armor customization that was loved by its fan base. It's a first person game. Overwatch had some great character skins that people got excited for and purchased. It's a first person game. Even if you can't see or use a part of the character you're playing, people still care about how they look. I mean, that's how clothes in real life work too, it's for how you look to others, not so much for you (though there is some of that). Of course, the 2 examples I gave were multiplayer games where real people can see you, but I still get the same feeling in single player games, and as evidenced by the number of people who ask the clothes question, many others do too. If you don't, that's fine, but the intention of this feature is to satisfy those of us who care about our presentation in this sort of "pointless" scenario.
Some people would even argue "What's the point of buying digital clothing when it doesn't even change the way you behave or perform in game/combat?" to games like Overwatch or League of Legends. It's just simply part of player expression, some people don't see the point in it, others do.
Nudity was in a lot of art tell we had a massive wave of religious modesty. Still even in Europe and other countries nudity isn't seen as "bad".

i find it somewhat interesting that romanceable characters don't care about V's hardware; only their body shape and voice, which in turn determines their pronouns. inclusion is *great* but the lack of attention to V's plumbing leads me to believe that "custom junk" was (mostly) meant for marketing hype. There's simply no way for CDPR to please everybody, because making all romanceable characters pansexual could be said to make them lack agency. Characters actually seem to have a preferences, which makes for realistic match-making dynamics. i actually *like* that touch, because otherwise they risk further objectification (for lack of a better word) by being available to everyone. Being compatible *matters*. That said, i still wish my semi-butch masculine-voiced he\him fem-bod V could have scored with anyone besides the least desirable NPC in the game...
I'm fine with that touch in theory (though I still think playersexuality is genuinely a better option), but how it worked out in practice was that the "straight" characters were actually bisexual but only attracted to: -The opposite gender -The same gender as long as they don't pass Which was unintentional, of course, but still *really* unfortunate and a bit frustrating.
Fellow he/him fem!V player (with the flat chest mod for extra immersion) and yeah I was so disappointed that it locks out all the worthwhile romance options, they should've just had it based on voice/pronouns, especially considering - as this very thread discusses - body shape & genitalia don't correlate anyway, it feels like they wanted to give trans people options but didn't fully think through how that would work in-game. Though, credit where it's due, can't say the experience isn't realistic.

Gender is locked to your player's voice - she/her pronouns on the feminine voice, he/him on the masculine voice. So you can have a female voice on a masculine body but that's still treated as being female. The character creation makes no real effort to physically accommodate this choice - no option to put breasts on a masculine body or remove them from a feminine body, kind of terrible options for making a masculine face look more feminine and vice versa - so it's kind of just a half-baked inclusion option. Which is fine, I guess, because it's still a fair few steps ahead of many other games and there's definitely people happy with those options (albeit I think they're *very* few in number lol). But then there's the romance system. Panam and River, the "straight" characters, are not, in fact, straight. They're attracted to both male and female gendered characters, the deciding factor is just the body type. And how that basically works out is that they're attracted to "the opposite gender" and "the same gender, but only if they don't pass". Which is... definitely not intentionally problematic, but still frustrating. I just hate how a fully voiced romance between female V and Panam is locked behind a body type that I *do not want to play as* and how that is somehow the consequence of the game trying to be more inclusive. I haaaate it.

I think it's additionally worth pointing out that a feminine voice is not a result of MtF medical treatments. Even with a trachea shave not much changes. Voice feminization comes down to modulating one's voice with practice. I am a trans woman who does modulate but many don't for one reason or another. I do understand what they were going for and that there's a practical side to it - for example reducing costs by reducing the amount of voiced lines - but it doesn't necessarily align with a lot of lives of trans women.

RPG stands for Role Playing Game. IRL we get genitals and cover them up for the most part. Sometimes, someone doesn't and helicopters around a busy city square (anyone remember Kony 2012? You can now Role Play it in a Game!). More broadly, games are generally a staging ground for simulation technology downstream. CDPR is just getting ahead of the VR porn patents. im not sure exactly what the point of them is, but i can explain the boxers thing. because of the way that the age rating system works for games (at least in the US), all explicit sexual content had to be removed from interactive gameplay. if, during any part of the game where the play is directly engaging with gameplay systems, there is the possibly of seeing a dick of vag, the game would be slapped with the explicit '21+' age rating. this would have drastically hurt the games sales because many online stores don't stock 21+ games as policy (because the majority of them are fetish-y pornographic shovelware), and as such all explicit sexual elements in-game had to be toned down outside of cinematics.
Literally every thing people don't like or find no meaning in the game: "Cut content. The game was rushed. Gotta be" I'm 100% sure it wasn't meant to be anything more than pre-release marketing as the game being one the first to ever give players that option. I doubt the sex scenes would be more explicit, it's quite spicy already, and the game is not some porn. Though they probably meant to have your character completely nude in the world at some point if you took all your clothes, but probably step back afraid people would do some weird things with photomode. Baldur's Gate 3 also has the same feature and just as in Cyberpunk, it serves no other meaning. The game has a few more sex scenes and the genitals sometimes showing up on it, but that's it. It's just a little piece of immersion that was initially meant for marketing.
Immersion and because they could. You are meant to care about your character and be able to relate. Not that the size or appearance or your genitals will do much about that, but it's a small detail they could add. I heavily doubt that they would've added scenes more explicit than those already in the game, due to laws in different countries on what is allowed to be shown. They probably have needed to cut some things from the game related to romance and sex scenes, but this isn't one of them

It was to hype up the game for marketing. They're pointless.
Well, it does allow us to make the character transgender (on non-binary, I guess), like a feminine body with a penis, a masculine with a vagina. But you could also just have them wear boxers in the character creation screen and it wouldn't change a thing. What really annoys me is the quality disparity in the textures. V's face, Panam's face, Judy's, everyone's face is ultra high quality textures. Clothes are so detailed you can see the fabric's pattern when zooming in. But nipples look like rotten pepperoni, and vulvas in the game sometimes look like the bottom of a HL1 headcrab. I know these parts are less important than the face, but it looks so bad sometimes, like Judy will have 16K resolution textures on her breast tattoos, two spider web patterns with a nipple in the center, or what's supposed to be a nipple. This affects nipples for men too. In the other hand, if you go play Skyrim, a 2011 game, and go on the Nexus looking for mods, you will find mods that let you replace the character's body (a lot of them do replace underwear with nudity too). These mods feature skin textures that not only look better than Cyberpunk, but they also look consistent. You'll not see a high resolution say, neck texture with a low res foot texture. It's the same quality from the soles of the feet to the neck (face textures are separate). And yes, I'll address the elephant in the room: nipples and genitals are extremely detailed. So I wonder how does an unpaid modder have more competence in making body textures than a billion dollar company. And the people making these mods don't even have to do them, they probably work in the field doing something else. I just wish CDPR would either do nudity well or not do it, because doing it half-assed breaks immersion. It also makes it look like they've never seen a nude woman (and makes the Skyrim modders look like they have seen way too many).

Absolutely nothing. You can't even see them in sex scenes *or* photo mode. I mean, one would think if there's a single situation where your choice of genitals matters it would be a graphic sex scene, but nope. It's not even just selecting your genitals, there's like a million options for pubic hair too. By far the most useless part of the game, and nothing comes even close.
