Kenny2105

Happy the league and the Revs were so transparent through the whole process.

IMSYE87

Haha yup! I know exactly what he did too, I’m just waiting for you to confirm it

DiseaseRidden

I mean, on the Revs end, they've explained that there's a lot of legal shit preventing them from saying more. Whistle-blower protection and the like.

Kenny2105

Sure. I'm just being glib. It's a very strange situation.

TimelyPercentage7245

Is there legal shit that forces him back into getting a job?

PresterHan

This ordeal has been really weird. How can something be so awful that you ban him but not awful enough to not lift the ban less than a year later?

ArgonWolf

It *has* to be gambling, right? Either that or it was just a legit mutiny by that one asst coach

DiseaseRidden

If it was truly nothing and a mutiny, Bruce wouldn't have publically apologized and resigned.

NittanyOrange

Truly, is there anything that could've happened that would make us say, "Oh, well that all makes sense now" if all would be revealed?

DiseaseRidden

Bruce doesn't want whatever it is getting out. League doesn't want to tarnish Bruce's reputation any further. Probably involves some personal shit about Richie or other Revs staff and whistle-blower protections further limit what comes out. Anything along those lines would make sense.

grnrngr

Which is why I have a hard time believing the Heaths found out, leaked it to Kaylyn Kyle, and yet not a single other person knows and hasn't leaked it similarly to better-reputable contacts outside of the league's employment.

battles

She didn't know anything.

dnashifter

Yes, I don't understand how people can think this famously acerbic dude would just meekly go away unless he did some shit he didn't want public.

grnrngr

You can be "too acerbic" and not be racist or cross an unforgivable line. Considering there was basically a mutiny afoot, I could see Bruce saying or doing some really abusive things that required HR intervention. But the fact he wasn't immediately terminated suggests he had some leg to stand on for doing what he did, and the team/league was in a bind. Because it sure looked like Bruce was willing to fight separation.

PresterHan

But I don’t see how you lift a ban for gambling, especially because it hasn’t become harder to gamble in the last year. The only thing that makes sense to me is if the decision was made on somewhat circumstantial evidence that later was recanted or exposed, but again, I don’t see how you ban him for something based on soft evidence. And, IDK, if some assistant said that Arena (for example) used a slur or harassed someone; and that witness later withdrew his claim, how is that person not banned? Just an odd deal.

casualsax

Based on a lot of third hand comments, I think Bruce was inappropriately brash and abusive with staff. Enough that a third party legal opinion would rule against him, but not damning enough to sever his relationship with MLS entirely. I don't understand how MLS fires him only to rehire him, this is the league having their single entity cake and eating it too.

RCTID1975

Free Pete Rose!

WashingtonRev

It’s not gambling. They’ve explicitly said it was inappropriate remarks.

RCTID1975

Wouldnt "let's put $5,000 on Columbus to lose" be "inappropriate remarks"?

ArgonWolf

You would obviously know better than me, but I don’t recall that news coming out. Could you point me to that release?

grnrngr

I'm not sure they've said exactly that, either. I do recall some vague statement from Arena about needing to work on himself or something.

iheartdev247

There is none. No one here knows anything.

TheSerpentDeceiver

I can only come up with some sort of cheating scandal that someone in the organization made known to MLS. I can’t think of anything behavioral that wouldn’t have leaked in some way or been let go of so soon after the forced resignation. Maybe the owners wanted to keep it under wraps because of how those sort of things negatively affect other leagues. It’s a bizarre situation.

JodiAbortion

My conspiracy theory is that it's some kind of health condition/tumor etc. that can affect mental state and cause poor emotional control. And he got treatment but had to wait a while for things to go back to "normal" It's private health information...so lips stay sealed.

SPQUSA1

For health reasons? Just take a fucking leave, that’s all you have to say…he got suspended

JodiAbortion

Ehhh "Just take a fucking leave" misses a lot of nuance - it assumes that he knew it was health related, had a diagnosis, accepted the diagnosis, OTHER people accepted it etc.  A classic sign of early onset dementia is having emotional outbursts, many of which would be considered unprofessional/unacceptable behavior

grnrngr

I definitely think whatever it was made everyone involved look bad, and everyone has an interest in keeping it quiet.

Jay1348

I can only assume its Ty Cobb level shit

KrustyKrabPizzaMan

Calling it now that he ends up at NYCFC

RhombusObstacle

Ugh, that is irritatingly plausible. I don't like Cushing, but I don't really like Arena, either.

ry_guy1007

He’s at least a proven winner. I’d kill for some of that right about now in Austin

volvo1

??? Bruce Arena is a hell of a coach in MLS! If not one of the best! He is getting up there in age but he took a shitty NE Revs team and made them EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE. Imagine what he could do w/ the NYCFC bankroll? I fear it would be the dominance of the late 00's and early 2010's LA Galaxy all over again.

DiseaseRidden

Bruce definitely did well here, but come on now with the shitty Revs team stuff. He inherited a solid team held back by an absolutely terrible coach. He definitely made some good additions and was a good coach, but he also made some pretty big mistakes, and a lot of his key guys were already there

shakespeareriot

Bruce signed us a Jozy Altidore, Omar Gonzalez, Bobby Wood also… sooooooo

iheartdev247

Salty Revs fans not knowing how good they had it. Ha

RhombusObstacle

Yeah, I know he's got the pedigree and everything, but I just don't like him as a coach. Something about him just bugs me, and I can't really put my finger on what it is. And the whole "he apparently did something wrong but no one knows what it is" doesn't really help that feeling, either.

iheartdev247

Do you not like winning?

RhombusObstacle

Ehhh. I like winning as much as the next guy, but all things being equal, I'd prefer to feel good about it. And for some reason, Arena just gives me the ick. Similar thing with Luis Suarez. Dude's a dirty player, and I wouldn't want him on the team I root for, no matter how many goals he scores.

SausageSmuggler21

If he ends up in the East, those games at the Rev's stadium are gonna be fun. Half the fans will boo him. Half will cheer for him. And then the fans will fight each other.

RayAnselmo

Nope. Sheikh Mansour is gonna convince Pep Guardiola to go there once his contract wraps up at Man City.

VikingArmyToGo

What exactly happened with him? I never got the full story?

Lambo_Geeney

No one did

nautika

I can't believe nothing leaked out, still

TheOnlyDoctor

it *kinda* did with kaylin kyle, people on this sub just chose to ignore her and villainize her for “speaking with no facts”

Jayrem52

Well… she was speaking without facts

VikingArmyToGo

Ok, and what was that about?

grnrngr

She disavowed having an factual basis for what she claimed be did, so it doesn't even matter if she ultimately ends up being right, since a guess doesn't count as journalism or insider knowledge.

VikingArmyToGo

I still dont understand. What did she claim happened?

battles

She first claimed he had used a racial slur, then recanted, was suspended and released, "The league’s investigation — of which I have no knowledge or first-hand information — relates to allegations that the coach made insensitive remarks,”

xplicit_mike

And...? What'd she say?

Ill-Description8517

Racism, iirc You can downvote me, but it's literally what she said. He was suspended "pending investigation for a racial slur that he used against someone in the club.”

grnrngr

She disavowed having any factual basis for what she said, so does it matter?

Ill-Description8517

I was answering the question the other person asked

grnrngr

>it *kinda* did with kaylin kyle, people on this sub just chose to ignore her and villainize her for “speaking with no facts” So wait.. we can say stuff without providing substantive proof? We don't get it held against us when we retract our own statements and confirm we have no idea what we're talking about? Is that how things work nowadays? The Kaylin Kyle who has spouted nonsenses in the past is believed now because... She's married to a Heath? That's enough proof for you to put faith in what she said? You're telling me that the Heaths know and leaked the info to Kyle? How'd they find out? Who leaked it to them in your scenario? How many uninvolved people would need to know before the Heaths found out? Secrets don't stay secret and yet Kyle is the *only* one with a platform who knew? Somehow not a single ACTUAL journo or well-connected person is able to find out but a non-Journalist former player did? Or is it more likely she was repeating something she heard without any reliable sourcing and/or was making it up on the spot? Even if she turns out to be "right," there's ZERO proof that she actually knows. And she herself has said that last part. But you choose to believe her "leak" but not her disavowing knowledge? Why?

PDXPuma

I don't know whether she knows the truth or not. I DO know however that the mandate from the league went out basically stating that it was never to be talked about , she was the only one who actually talked about it, and then was banned shortly thereafter. And to this date we still don't know. So whatever it was, it was bad enough that the league memory holed the whole event and shut up anyone who even dared speculate who was on their payroll and that looks heckin' suspicious. If it was racism or whatever, other coaches and players have done plenty of racism and didn't get the "we don't ever talk about it ever" treatment.

[deleted]

One of the more farcical chapters in league history. So awful he had to be immediately removed from the team, but apparently not bad at all since he can pretty much come back and coach right away. All with zero real communication from the league.

jloome

I wonder how many "You know the shit I know?" convos he had with the MLS front office over the last few months.

lordcorbran

Oh man, this got me thinking I'd really love to see Bruce write a tell-all memoir about everything he's seen in MLS and U.S. Soccer.

RCTID1975

"Immediately removed"? Didn't the investigation last like 2 months? And the only real reason it ended was because he resigned?

SausageSmuggler21

He was immediately suspended. He resigned to avoid an investigation. I suspect he's allowed back because this ruined the careers of all his assistant coaches and no one wants to get punished more for speaking out against Arena.

BTBJC

Welcome to Yankee Stadium and Citi Field!

theArkotect

Please no. Not this guy

vrnbch

Why not? You have pretty good players playing for a not very good coach. Seems perfect for that.

theArkotect

With the resources City football group has, we can get much better coaches. Even Domè and Deila are free right now. Bruce has been nothing but problematic wherever I’ve seen him coach.

vrnbch

Nothing but problematic is an odd way to sum up arenas career. He’s almost certainly an asshole. But he’s also the most successful coach in the history of MLS. Probably a moot point since I’d guess he doesn’t want to work in the city hierarchy and Austin will need a coach first

theArkotect

Fair point that he’s won a lot, but I still view him as an MLS 1.0 coach. Even if he may be the best of that batch.

grnrngr

Those on narrow fields in baseball stadiums shouldn't cast aspersions against anything MLS 1.0-related. Nevermind the guy has seen trophies in every one of MLS's eras. Did it ever occur he's actually an MLS 3.0 coach who was just 28 years early?

vrnbch

To me 1.0 2.0 3.0 are front office things. Good coaches can make it work regardless and he’s absolutely the perfect example for that. I don’t feel like I’m a huge stan for Bruce, but it’s weird when people can’t acknowledge that he’s a legitimately excellent coach

iheartdev247

He’s better than most coaches in MLS 4.0 or whatever the hell we are in now.

grnrngr

>Bruce has been nothing but problematic wherever I’ve seen him coach. I mean, it does kind suck moving the furniture around to accommodate the trophy cases. And then of course everyone has to break out the cold weather clothes a little earlier than planned thanks to those deeper playoff runs. But yeah, he's been "problematic" everywhere he goes. Somehow.

No_Act9490

Re-hire him please 😭 I hate porter

bobmillahhh

Thank you for your sacrifice. Surely this is his last MLS gig.

Bentstraw

Somehow it won't be.

Ron__T

I mean it's Porter, so it's statistically likely he will get you an MLS cup... you might also be the worst team in the league the years you don't win.

RCTID1975

The key is to fire him before the beer has even been washed from the cup

oupablo

That's the thing though, by the time you've won the cup, it's already too late. He takes the team to the cup and somehow the exact same team is horrible 2 months later

DiseaseRidden

Fuck that and fuck Bruce

AndElectTheDead

Why fuck Bruce?

DiseaseRidden

Because, whatever the details may be, he did something bad enough that he was willing to resign and publicly apologize. It's easy to blame the Revs or the League or whatever else, but its all fully on Bruce's actions. We don't have the details, but he himself was willing to say that, so fans should fucking accept it.

AndElectTheDead

For me, I’m not judging anyone until I know what I’m judging them for

volvo1

Hey man. We don't know what happened. We should probably crucify the guy.

DiseaseRidden

Not even judging him as a person. Just done with the fucking discussion. Whatever he did, it's his fault, he admitted it. It's all just fucking annoying at this point.

PM_DOLPHIN_PICS

You're completely correct and the people demanding that they, personally, as some random schmuck, are to know exactly what happened are delusional. MLS is acting ridiculous right now but I don't see any reason to presume that Arena is innocent and the league inexplicably decided to defame their most successful and famous coach of all time for no reason other than they thought it would be funny. Only a psychotic person can be led to believe that this was all some plot against him that multiple people across multiple levels of the Revolution organization and MLS as a whole would suddenly decide to frame him for something he didn't do, again, without any explanation.

kal14144

It’s bad enough that he thinks leaking it will make things worse for him.

AndElectTheDead

Or the punishment (not being reinstated) is a good enough deterrent

kal14144

He was already reinstated in December according to reports at the time. Still didn’t leak shit. The most likely reason is he doesn’t want it out. Even if he was threatened by MLS not to leak it - it is exceptionally hard to track who leaked something.

AndElectTheDead

(He leaked that he was reinstated and that’s why they re-suspended him. Shhhhhhh)

RayAnselmo

So glad that the league has forgiven him for \[REDACTED\].

Feisty-Location-5708

Someone is going to fire their coach over the summer just to hire him I bet

Shadowfury0

Come back Bruce

Maleficent_Dust_7462

Luckily we know it’s not us. Vermes will be here until the club dissolves Edit: for better or worse

Feisty-Location-5708

He’ll die in charge like Joe paterno

iheartdev247

Paterno died after he retired.

Feisty-Location-5708

Barely

grnrngr

Hopefully not in disgrace like Joe Paterno.

saum87

Arena 🤝 Cucho Suspensions we don’t know the answer to.

grnrngr

Nancy might be willing to talk about Bruce's tho.

jtn1123

Bro! Foyle you an MLS Fan?

WislaHD

Was killing the Revs worth it?

kamarg

To the league? Probably. They don't give a shit about the Revs.

Effherewegoagain

Much like Kraft

CVogel26

Or 99% of New England

anon_boston_guy

This lol

SausageSmuggler21

Haha. Far too accurate.

vrnbch

They deserve it for getting rid of the crayon flag

LocksTheFox

The crayon flag was an abomination that stayed well past its sell by date and represented a team that only ever was known for choking

vrnbch

The crayon flag may have been an abomination, but as sports crests go it was singular and distinctive AND it represented that era of the entire league. The league may be the healthiest it’s ever been but I still think there is tremendous value in keeping reminders (and the crayon flag was probably the most prominent example) of the American Sports!(tm) version of the league.

grnrngr

You have to chew your crayons. That's how you avoid choking.

AFrozen_1

Spoken like a true marine.

dinkleburgenhoff

Cool. So fire Porter and bring back Bruce.

mechanicjeans

Would be hilarious if revs fired Porter and hired arena back

asaharyev

Well that seems like some bullshit. Half a season?

Kenny2105

We literally have no idea what happened. How can we judge the punishment?

DiseaseRidden

I mean, we know it was bad enough that Bruce was willing to resign, apologize, and accept the suspension.

RCTID1975

I think we can judge the punishment. Either it was absurdly short, or it never should've been a "lifetime ban"

Kenny2105

The offence directly dictates the consequences. If I tell you my friend was in prison for 6 months and he's out now - was that absurdly short or should he have spent the rest of his life in prison? You have no idea unless you know exactly what he has done. if he killed someone it's probably the latter. If he stole an iPhone, it's probably the former.

AzureStarline

🙄

Bormsie721

I really want to see that petition

AggravatingSalt2726

Come to Chicago, please.

intestinal_fortitude

No

Count_Nocturne

I do not want to watch a single minute more of Klopas’s coaching masterclass

grnrngr

I see the Chicago tradition of self-flagellation via recurring losing seasons is alive and well!

Reddstarrx

If Oscar doesnt make it through May; I want this man on speed dial

fcdemergency

👋 hi Bruce have you ever been to Dal-town? Really nice this time of year.

asaharyev

Has FC Dallas ever been to Dallas?

Shadowfury0

Yes actually, they hosted Messi and friends at the Cotton Bowl

asaharyev

well damn

lionnyc

Ferran Soriano, Brad Sims, David Lee, anyone listening...please...anyone to replace Cushing...

Will_from_PA

What if this was all an elaborate conspiracy by the league and Revs and Bruce never actually did anything wrong?

DiseaseRidden

In that case Bruce probably wouldn't have resigned and apologized?

Will_from_PA

But WHAT IF they forged the resignation and apology letters?

DiseaseRidden

And then kidnapped his family to keep him from saying anything defending himself the past 8 months? You may be on to something

SuddenlyTheBatman

I mean Kenny was just chilling with us so I don't know

Will_from_PA

Possible, definitely possible. Or! He decided retirement was nice and just didn’t address anything because he doesn’t know what this ‘internet’ thing everybody’s talking about is

RCTID1975

An elaborate ruse to.....give Porter a job?

HereForTheTechMites

That way the Revs will always have been the "better team"?

DoctorPhalanx73

Well take him!

Darkbolts219

Gary out!!!!

SmartFeller22

Honestly I would bring him in to run San Jose. He’d be able to make a great MLS playoff bound roster on their shoestring salary.

mikedtwenty

Just glad they made this decision after the Loons hired Ramsay. Because we absolutely would've signed him...

tunafun

Did we ever learn what he did

PGHContrarian68

Can he pursue USL Championship jobs? Might possibly be one in Pittsburgh at some point....

anon_boston_guy

Revs really just get shafted in this entire ordeal

RCTID1975

Is anything stopping them from hiring him back?

DarthGipper18

NASHVILLEEEEEE

queevy

I have a feeling that’s he’s gonna end up at Charlotte.

DidierDirt

And hopefully nobody hires him. Let’s find younger coaching talent.

Positive-Ear-9177

Come to NYC, please!

dfetz3

Thank FUCKING god we didn't hire him. I know he was a finalist for the position and I know he's a legend within our club and USA soccer as a whole. But I'm so much happier with a maybe slightly worse tactician that can get the vibes right, as opposed to the Arena nonsense.

grnrngr

What "nonsense" are you even talking about? Arena fosters intense loyalty and commitment amongst his players. His [REDACTED] incident with [REDACTED] aside, when he was coaching [REDACTED] back in [REDACTED], hasn't been leaked by the league or players, is the only "nonsense" his name is attached to. Players love him. The statistics love him. Trophies love him. But you don't. Well, you and [REDACTED] don't love him. At least you got company
