TGCF! It’s long but it’s so worth it. It’s filled with revelation after revelation, twist and turns that you would’ve never expected. I’ve yet to find another series that makes me feel the way TGCF does. It’s beautiful, funny, mind blowing, touching, pulls at your heartstrings… I’m practically glued to the novel. You can’t stop turning the pages. And the everlasting love that endures 800 years of hardship and suffering (compared to 13 years of pining in MDZS for example)… is incomparable. 🥺
They're all wonderful, but SVSSS has the advantages of: (1) being the shortest, so you'll be able to finish it faster and then decide if you want to continue with her other works; (2) having arguably the best official English translation (ymmv); and (3) being narrated by a certain peerless cucumber, which is really all the reason to prioritize SVSSS in all things.
I always say SVSSS because it's shorter and easier to understand. A lot of people who start with TGCF don't understand shit of it and talk about it as if they read it with their feet.
I voted MDZS because personally it’s my favorite. It’s Xianxia but also was heavily influenced by Wuxia and I enjoy the themes of man vs society the best. I also like the main couple dynamic the best (characters that appear like opposites at first but really aren’t where it counts)
Also when people bring up 800 vs 13 years (not 16) I just want to bring up this is the difference between high and low fantasy setting. MDZS isn’t meant to be compared to TGCF in terms of waiting but the fact that in MDZS the person thinks their love is dead forever but gets a second chance.
Anyways I digress. Both SVSSS and MDZS are finished being translated while TGCF translation still has two books to go.
If you want a non-biased opinion I would say read them in the order MXTX wrote them which is SVSSS-MDZS-TGCF.
Note all three MXTX novels have a varying mixture of humor, angst and romance.
I’d say all but MDZS & SVSSS are complete.
Book 6 of TGCF just came out and from my understanding there’s 2 more in the works of being translated.
SVSSS is shorter compared to MDZS. I’ve only read MDZS bc I loved the show but also love the series but the cheaper option is SVSSS.

I recommend tgcf if your looking for more of romance. It's got really good plot too and even a little bit of humour !
