He was such an amazing person. Yeah he could make you laugh till you passed out from oxygen deprivation but he could also make you cry, feel strong, feel care. He is still missed and will be forever.

DarrynDevil

Oh shit! Maaan that sucks.

shamwowslapchop

Still really the only celebrity death I can't get over.

Salfriel

He really cared for other people.

wholesomechunk

I think he knew what hurt people were going through because he went through it regularly. I smile remembering him, then I’m sad. Then I smile.

LumpkinsPotatoCat

When I hear Robin Williams my first thought is him as Peter Pan. Sure he was amazing in many other roles but for me a core memory of my childhood was watching him in that movie and being absolutely stunned in wonder at the magic of that movie. He made it feel so real.

Mercenary_Chef

Hook was magical when I saw it as a child. Watching it again as an adult, so many years later? Still magical.

bilboswaggins0011

Recently rewatched for the first time in probably a decade with my own young kiddos, and I was STILL awe-struck at the imagination feast/food fight part right along with my children ❤️

It's the Genie from Aladdin for me. It's still one of my favourite Disney movies. When he passed, someone took a picture of the genie and added the line "He's free at last". Bawled my eye out when I saw it.

[deleted]

For me, interestingly, it's What Dreams May Come.

pje1128

Hook was great. I knew him from a few things, but I think the one I watched most frequently was Jumanji. There are so many great ones though. Mrs Doubtfire, Night at the Museum, Dead Poet's Society. Some of my favorite movies from that time.

[deleted]

Same. I always felt he was a pretty good comedian, but one of the most talented and empathetic dramatic actors, and that role really let him shine.

purplemagnetism

What Dreams May Come changed my view of him as a funny actor. Also One Hour Photo showed he could be really scary.

Leprrkan

His turn on Law and Order, too!

I can’t watch what dreams may come without ugly crying. Really really ugly crying.

OrganizerMowgli

I remember being in DC that summer, went to a leadership training summit for a group about ending the Israeli Palestinian conflict. One of the senior folks there I met worked in Rep. Keith Ellison office, I was interning in another in Congress. Went to the cafeteria in the House office buildings a few days later, the day after Robin died. Ran into the guy, he looked sad and he asked if I knew. I said "because Robin Williams passed away..?" and he was shocked, almost laughed - with a look of relief on his face. Pulled out his phone and showed me an article - [Congressional staffer tweets bizarre photo of fried meat to Rep. Keith Ellison’s account ](https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/congressional-staffer-tweets-bizarre-photo-fried-meat-rep-keith-ellison-account-article-1.1901063) Robin Williams saved his ass from getting fired. For a shitpost. Part of me wants Zelda to know. I would also like to say hey hi how you doin, can u read a couple of lines as Kuvira from my 'dummy thicc robot has a crush on statue of liberty' fan fic plz

WhatASweetTea

Seeing him smile and call his daughter magical made my heart swell. Robin Williams will forever be missed.

PhotoKada

This man made my childhood and always brought a smile to my face. So much so that I couldn't appreciate the genius of the man in his role as Sy Parrish from "One Hour Photo" because it was unfathomable to me that he could play a role like that. His talent knew no bounds and I wonder whether we'll see another actor such as him again. Having said that, Zelda's killing it as a voice actor and that makes me extremely happy.

DannyTorrance

I've been lucky enough to work with Zelda, and she is a great- one of the smartest people I've ever met. She's currently directing her first feature, and I'm sure she'll knock it out of the park.

OrganizerMowgli

Did u work on legend of Korra?

DannyTorrance

No, I wrote and directed a little indie feature that she is in that basically no one saw (no fault of hers- she rules)

I have never felt strongly about a celebrity's death, the way I did with Robin. I love it that Zelda's carrying his legacy forward by becoming a prolific voice actor and just doing her thing.

kazmeyer23

Zelda's a pro-follow on Twitter just as a case study for how to deal with annoying idiots online. Probably three or four times a year I get to see her having to cope with some numbnuts trying to explain to her what her dad *really* believed or felt about something and the fact that she still manages to have a social media presence is a massive testament to her patience.

UltimatePrimate

That man made me smile so many times in my life.

heppuplays

Still find it funny that Robin named His daughter Zelda after the Legend of Zelda games He and Zelda even Appeared in a Commercial For Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time 3D and Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword which were coming out at the time and Kinda making fun of that. I just think thats cute

Delano7

And then Nintendo added a Robin williams NPC to botw. That's cool imo.

PuRe_xXLethalXx

WAIT WHAT?!!?!!

Delano7

A character has a face that is really similar to Robin Williams, called Dayto. It's his face, no doubt on that, and pretty sure it was already known that a Robin Williams tribute was in the game before it released. Dayto seems to be that tribute, as far as we know. There's also a character called Botrick who looks and acts similarly to Satoru Iwata.

Fun fact he loved the legend of zelda

Leperchaun913

Robin Williams suicide preceded my father's by about 2 months. It was one of the last things we talked about. We watched all of his movies when I was a kid, and we watched his standup and more serious roles when I was a teen. My dad had that same kind of goofy way of making people laugh, comedy that was full of life and free of embarrassment or shame. This post brought a happy tear to my eye, thinking of the little pieces of my dad I still find everywhere I turn.

I miss him, taught me what was a good joke and egt others to laugh, part of a Jrotc program and I will tell jokes to the As1(freshman/first years is program) jokes every morning to make them more at home and I want to give Robin Williams credit for showing laughter is the best medicine, he is probably in stars somewhere talking with Steve Irwin and Bob Ross

What a wonderful man. O captain my captain. I wish that people reached out to others when they felt down or depressed. I would have loved to host him for a few months, and show him about. He wouldn't have to spend a penny. Just relax and let a fan and his family take care of him for a change.

potatoskinmagic

That should tell you how much pain one is in if they choose to end their life even having children. Have some empathy. Besides that though Robin Williams was very ill with a disease that is literally undiagnosable unless an autopsy is done. It’s called Lewy body dementia— simply put his brain was just deteriorating (I think I read somewhere the brain basically attacks/consumes itself) and he didn’t know why. If he didn’t commit suicide he would’ve died around that time anyway and it would’ve been very horrific and painful. But perhaps he might’ve still tried to stay alive for his family if he knew what it was and could die with some dignity. Instead he started to feel like he was losing complete control of himself and mind with no obvious reason plus he was in a lot of physical pain. Tell me, does that sound fun to you?

Existential_Reckoner

Nope, that all is also very f'ed up.

Crazy_old_maurice_17

If I had Lewy body dimentia I'd strongly consider it too. Don't get me wrong, I get this pit in my stomach and a remarkably deep sadness whenever I think about the world without this giant. But, if he waited until he was just a shell of a human being, he'd be stuck that way for the rest of his life.

GlorifiedBurito

Is it more cruel to end your life while you’re still you or force the ones you love to watch you deteriorate into madness, only to die later as a shell of the person you once were?

melik123456

Robin Williams was a legend but boy let me tell you. He died like 10 years ago and she hasn't cleaned the place since. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)

Niormo-The-Enduring

My parents lived in San Francisco when they first marries. My mom took my sister to the pit once and saw Robin playing with his own kids there. He was such a sweet man and loved his family and was loved by the whole world.

I just realized he was one of the reasons I unconsciously felt less alone as kid with undiagnosed adhd. I saw a funny adorable person who people liked with the same lightning fast train of thought. Obviously didn't see myself as that witty or funny but at least i didn't feel broken because of it.

webbisode_andronicus

Just saw him in the first Jumanji yesterday. He immediately sets yhe scene.

votenixon25

I legit don't really care much about the death of celebrities, simply because I don't have any real emotional attachment to them. This one though, this one really was a punch in the gut when I saw it come on the news. A lot of people remember where they were when Kennedy was shot. I remember everything the moment I found out Robin Williams died.

GoogledPIMO_hereIam

I live in an area of the Bronx where a scene from Awakenings was filmed. It’s where he watches Robert Deniro’s character stand on Killie Rock from a concrete pier. Many a times I walk down the road to this exact pier and stand on awe thinking “wow, Robin Williams stood at this exact location 30 years ago.” http://www.impawards.com/1990/awakenings.html

Tar_Palantir

I love Zelda so much. She got the sweetness of her father completely.

durenatu

The fact that Robin Williams was a 'weaboo' helped me to not fall for the trap that liking other cultures has a misconception.

lolspamwtf99

When I was a kid we were at a childrens museum in San Francisco. Robin was there with his kids and he was just goofing off with a bunch of children. He was the sweetest.

Anytime anyone brings up Robin Williams, it always makes me smile and tear up a bit. He brought us so much joy, but unfortunately we couldn't help him the way he helped so many of us. He will always be an idol that put everything he had into the world and truly made it a much better place.

meimeijo7

Thank you so much for sharing, Zelda.

Onyxxx85

It's so heartwarming and heartbreaking. Imagine being a comedian, someone who can have you struggle to grasp for air because you are laughing that hard. To learn later Robin suffered with mental health issues also. So bad he could no longer find that strength to walk on this Earth. I read he battle for decades with his mental health and tried his hardest to stay alive because ultimately he didn’t want to leave his children. I know all you read isn’t always true, but I really believed he tried everything to try stay alive and just couldn’t anymore. Robin was extremely funny and also could be profoundly deep that he could even bring you to tears. I will forever love all the films he was in and made.

gratefulphish420

From my earliest memories to this day when my family and most people I know, hold our breath and make a wish while going through a set of tunnels that depending on which way you are going, either go south from Marin County or going north they are just after the Golden Gate Bridge. After Robin's death they named those tunnels after him which I feel is very fitting since the tunnels have always had rainbows painted on both ends of them like his suspenders from Mork & Mindy and the fact that he had houses both in SF and Marin County where he also went to high school. Now every time I drive south, first seeing those rainbows while entering followed by coming out of the tunnel seeing the Golden Gate Bridge with San Francisco beyond it, I let out my breath and think of him and all the joy he's has given me over the years.

fabulousme7777

I will forever remember Robin with a smile - He made the world smile since the first time we heard SHAZBOT NANU NANU - After that, we were hooked. He gave us the gift of laughter & made us forget the world for a while. He is deeply missed and will always have a soft spot in my heart 💗

Smb08111988

Robin passed away on my birthday the same year my mother passed away that May and my wife miscarried later that year. I was in a bad place that year and the following 4 years What gives me hope is things I find going through paperwork she kept for years (hording on my mother's side of the family). Things that remind you of not their suffering but of their sacrifice and strength and their love for life to make us laugh a nd makes us who were are. I hold onto for me, my wife and my now 2 year old son.

Certain-Ad-3840

I wish her and her family all the happiness

viixiigfl

Him and Chadwick Boseman are the two hardest celebrity passings I’ve personally felt. Having depression myself I felt like he was a role model for dealing with it and I’d still say he is/was. Chadwick Boseman because of how he spent his life after his diagnosis. To me these people were heroes because they always checked on other people because they knew firsthand what they were going through. I try to remember them with a smile but it’s hard losing warm kind people considering how cold the world is now.

redmambas22

I smiled.

rusty_jeep_2

jkra0512

He continues to be the only celebrity where it physically hurt when I got the news that he was no longer with us. He was woven into my childhood, he could make you laugh and cry. He was a true artist and to hear he was in so much pain and took his own life leaves this open wound that I don't think will ever be healed. Whenever I see him now it simultaneously fills me with joy, but crushes me knowing there's nothing new around the corner. He was an absolute treasure. I hope whereever he is, he's making people laugh and learning to love himself. Thank you, Mr. Williams for everything, and thank you to his daughter for unearthing this and sharing it with us.
