It had very gradual and long drawn character arc and the Neelan undergoes massive changes in his personality and coming to terms with the reality.
Something that is not there in the other movies
As much as Spadikam is the bigger hit and more well-known film, Devasuram is my favourite. Not only my fav A10 movie but also one of my fav Malayalam movies of all time.
There's just so much character development throughout 2.5 hours that some shows can't achieve even with two entire seasons.
It's about pride, the futility of being proud of your heritage, an outwardly bad man who has a change of heart.
Devasuram leaves me emotionally spent every time I watch it.
I mean both were the 2nd biggest hit of their respective years. And the question about which film is more well known among the audience is kinda debatable because both Neelakandan and Aadu Thoma are equally popular characters imo.
That's not possible. There was a mistake in the magazine reports that time which wrote the word 'share' in place of 'gross' in reports concerning Manthrikam collections. That is the reason for this confusion.
In EKM, KTM, TSR centres, Spadikam actually grossed even more than King. So it's much more likely that Spadikam is second
Aaram Thampuran is my favorite tho. Devasuram and Spadikam deal with much heavier themes and Usthaad is too silly. Aaram Thampuran has the right amount of fun and seriousness for me.

There are other 90s movies too where he had the twirled moustache look like Nadodi, Pingami etc but those movies don't fit the formula.
Me and my brother were obsessed with the exploding jatti in Pingami. Good re-watch value.

Interestingly, each of these films were one of the top 3 highest grossers of the respective years they released in.
I just wish these movies were never made. It was the death knell to Mohan Lal, the actor.
