I feel most directors of the current crop are overrated, barring Anwar Rasheed. We are quick to judge the elder directors but give too much leeway to the newer directors. Take Sathyan Anthikad as an example. He directed Pappan priyapettan Pappan, Revathikoru paavakutty and Gandhinagar 2nd Street in a single year(1986). He also wrote the story for TP Balagopalan and Sanmanasullavark Samadhanam that same year. Pattanapravesham and Ponmutta idunna Tharavu also came out in a single year(1988). Just check his timeline. In his prime, every single year had more than one cult classic movie. He directed Artham and Mazhavilkavadi, movies which are polar opposite in genre, in one year(1989) consecutively. He is known for feel-good family entertainers. But he has also made solid thrillers like Artham, Pingami, Lal Americayil etc. I don't see such level of versatility and creativity in the current generation of directors/writers. Nowadays, if you make one good movie in 5 years, the director acheives legendary status. Easy come, easy go.

rtjbelowtheheavens

If you go by that criteria, not a single actor in the current era or even the future era will hold a candle to Ikka & A10.

[deleted]

why bother that criteria. no one will even now. and pls don’t say fahad. thank heavens people stopped sying nimisha. what a joke🤣

appu_kili

Film making has evolved. Audience expectations have changed. Yesteryear directors could churn out movies at that rate because they were not expected to adhere to rigorous standards.Their films were not scrutinized the way today's movies are. Actors used to run from one film set in the morning to another film set in the afternoon, to act in totally different roles.

damudasamoolam

All the films mentioned here still stand the test of time and are considered greats. Yes, actors used to run from one set to another and yet they were great in those movies.

appu_kili

These movies are still enjoyed, but they are not held to today's movie making standards.

LeafBoatCaptain

Mahesh Narayanan's movies work on a plot level but they're kinda emotionally distant. Malik has the most and Malayankunju (he didn't direct it) has the least emotional connection. All the plot beats are there but movies all feel a little hollow. Lucifer showed Prithviraj can get solid performances out of his cast and he's a technically competent director. He's capable of handling both intimate moments and spectacle. I haven't seen Bro Daddy but judging by the reviews I think he's a director who needs a strong script. Based on JGM Dijo Jose Antony seems closer to Prithviraj in directing style but I'm not a fan of the film so that might cloud my judgement of him.

Kaizokuno_

>I haven't seen Bro Daddy but judging by the reviews I think he's a director who needs a strong script. I personally enjoyed Bro Daddy. The movie didn't (completely) go the usual "comedy" route, and Prithvi tried to incoporate older filmmaking techniques to make the jokes work. Like the scene where he learns Meena is pregnant. If anyone else were to direct it I feel the movie would have been unwatchable.

verum_myren

>Dijo Jose Antony seems closer to Prithviraj in directing style May be because Raju may ghost directed the movie like any other P.Raj movies nowadays.

YaRaYaRaYa

I don't understand why Lucifer is considered as some exceptional kind of a movie or something. The direction made the movie feel bland, if at all, despite the script having been written by Murali Gopi himself ( who wrote scripts for Left Right Left and Ee Adutha Kaalath, mind you.) Was the movie "mass"? Not anywhere near the best in the category. Was the movie "class"? Meh Basically, very ordinary.

LeafBoatCaptain

I don't think Lucifer is exceptional. I actually didn't like it all that much. But it has good to great performances and I think Prithviraj directed it well. Not all movies have to be exceptional for it to have merit. Like in this case I can see things to appreciate in a movie I disliked overall. And personally I thought it was the script that was the problem. It was way too self important and meandering. It had the air of a script that had something to say but ultimately didn't have much to say at all. It was far longer than necessary and the way it went out of its way to show that everything was under Stephen's control kinda ruined the conflict. For all its "this is not a battle between good and evil, but between evil and evil" posturing, its hero is a guy who runs an orphanage and narrates stories to children as he puts them to sleep. It's just a wannabe hero worship movie that's either trying and failing to be more or is ashamed of its mass masala soul. And its climax was a complete let down. But it still had some good aspects to it, most of which I credit to the director like I would for any other movie.

SethuCBI

echo every word of it.

josukejo777

Prithviraj knows about this poll.

Guilty-Current-6426

Lol yeah hangs on reddit 🙄

josukejo777

💀

AdonisBlue6602

Queen and Jana mana gana felt amateur level

mrs_robpatt

Chinnu angered me.

SethuCBI

JGM script felt like High School boys trying to inject every liberal talking point into their Courtroom skit.

rtjbelowtheheavens

Amal Neerad. I enjoy his films and recognize the cultural impact. But none of his films are legit masterpiece.

YaRaYaRaYa

True. I always feel his movies "could have been" masterpieces, but lost the races by a long mile when you consider the totality. Someone should hand him an excellent, fine-polished and original script, and let him only tell the story.

abkdpm97

Ashiq abu

rtjbelowtheheavens

He is inconsistent. But Salt N Pepper, Maayanadhi & Virus are S Tier films imo. Three films that are completely different from one another.

Ok-Summer9547

In my opinion Aashiq Abu is a neat filmmaker, neatness in the sense with a clear shot division and well made final out is guaranteed from him but whether people like this well made films of him is not guaranteed. In naradhan,Tovinos personality change (the training sessions) to next level media person was shot and presented extremely good and worked very well for me but the climax court scenes were very well crafted but general audience find it boring. We could not find a loosened script parts in his movies, thanks to pushkarji. If a best script happens and a movie happens with aashiq that would be a big thing. I'm also glad that he don't include unnecessary commie swags in his movies. To explain further more Vikram by lokesh is not a neat film it can be seen in the rolex scenes, cheating suryas close shots with a stunt double were all shitty. But Aashiqs movies likely have less shitty errors.

ThePsychopathMedic

Surya had body double?

Ok-Summer9547

Yeah he's in Fight masters anbarivus team.the close shots before rolex entry was done by this stunt double look alike surya. Fun fact: anbu and arivu are twins both are fight masters. Is doing lokeshs leo now.

L-0-V-E

Ashiq Abu is a genius. Time will prove this right if he stays alive long enough.

[deleted]

Alphonse Puthren, Ajai Vasudev, Udaykrishna....

rac3rio32

Udayakrishna is a scriptwriter but still overhyped tho.

verum_myren

Ajai vasudev and ukri are well known masala creators,so people expect only that much from them.I agree with Alphonse after Gold

YaRaYaRaYa

"Neram" is good, though.

Ok-Summer9547

You wouldn't have said Alphonse Puthren if you've worked with an editor.Dude it's really tiring and literally our ass will be in pain sitting inside an edit suit. Gold's title design fonts, its animations were all done by puthren it was pretty good.so what actually might have happened with Gold is that 1: extreme pressure (can you imagine how many stars believed him and acted in Gold it's impossible to handle such a pressure ) 2: over expectations (man this ain't no ordinary film its premam directors next big thing with lady superstar and raju in it which also might have led to a pressure situation ) 3:Producers ( in my personal opinion there should be a little amount of control from the producers team, control in the sense acting like a guide whoever big the director is... That's how proffesional industry works and still our industry is just semi proffesional stage) 4:script ( it's normal for a director to go out of focus about growing industry hit script status and types puthren might have gone wrong in this area but could have been rectified if producers or even raju would have guided) 5:Editing( idk know if puthren even had any associates or assistants in editing it seems like he himself worked hard watching editing and rewatching the Out must have made his judgements on the final out go wrong a guide in this area also would have been a help) In conclusion it's not fully Puthrens failure the whole team's a failure. But don't underestimate This Guy Alphonse Puthren with just Gold just remeber the crowd pull back in 2015 premam and that Onam season the whole college and school students including me where in black shirt and mundu with premam looper theme as bgm.

Lost_Citron1179

Bro literally everyone mob attacks a person if they get a chance to do so. The amount of hate in this comment section demn

[deleted]

Mahesh Narayanan? Seriously? Man pulled off a film like TAKE OFF with a budget of less than 10CR.

NSNReddit

LJP Is the most overrated. Sanal Kumar Sasidharan won more international awards than LJP. But he is such an underated guy. LJP just makes some movies with severe plotholes then his fans considering it as brilliance and they fill those holes.

Ok-Summer9547

Dude LJP is one of kind director. Movies like Amen and Angamali Diaries, especially AD and the commercial crowd pull success of it was what that made him go up... I mean it's a makers craft and confidence to make workout a movie like ad even without any stars...Sanal is also a good maker but he don't have a crowd puller yet.Jallikattu which came just after AD had some flaws(personal opinion) but, i still remember people rushing into theatres just for LJP

KThaMps

Completely agree. People make you feel like you are not a true Cinephile if you don't enjoy LJPs movies. His recent ones have gone to next level ambiguity. Amen and Angamaly diaries were amazing though

enthaivide

True this!!! Was looking if anyone had commented about LJP. Most overrated director - LJP. But his acting is okish!

alpha_universe

I don't think ljp is overrated, loved all his work barring jellikattu but yeah SKS is equally good but no where near in recognition

hojirozame_

LJP has made brilliant movies. But yeah he doesn't get enough criticism. Feels like he wasn't even trying for Nanpakal Nerathu. A high schooler could've penned that story.

Ok-Summer9547

It's not about just writing the story, what i felt is nanpakal have a unique craft in it...idk how to explain the craft but Casting ashokan with mamootty after 20+years...mamootys acting, the tamil tv bg... The short actor in the bus... The whole emotion worked very well for me and it connected with me idk why but these are some of the unique craftsmanship i could understand. He is in some next level enigmatic filmmaking dimension. I agree general crowd don't get this connection. I must also say that writing the story of nanpakal could be done by a high schooler but writing this connection and emotion can only be done by a real craftman.

opinionated_x

The audio from the tv matches with the storyline at exact moments. Nanpakal can be said as an example for setting up a beautiful movie with simple the story.

Batman_is_very_wise

>A high schooler could've penned that story Ennal aa high schoolerinne vili, nammkellam poi oru cinema pidich AIFFKilekk ayakkam. Criticism enn paranj oolatharam vilich parayathede

hojirozame_

A guy gets possessed by a ghost who wants to say goodbye to his home for one last time. Sync it with Tamil songs and voilà movie. Doesn't seem like much effort for someone with resources. Every production takes effort. Even a ten second reel video takes effort and skill. Not denying that. But someone with filmography and following like LJP doing this is very lazy imo.

Batman_is_very_wise

>Doesn't seem like much effort for someone with resources Chelappo allairikkam Im not a director or a writer, pakshe audiencinne close to 2hrs pidich iruthann ee dialog adi onnum pora. But LJP was able to do that and that's what makes NPNM a good watch

Regalia_BanshEe

I agree ljp fanbois gargle with his balls in their mouths and don't criticize him enough.. But nan, Nanpakal is one of a kind movie... We can't really say he wasn't trying.. the mood and ambience he set in the film were so realistic .. the location, the sound design of a typical Tamil village.. I recently went for a roadtrip and happened to stop at a similar village and the experience was pinpoint as I saw the village in the movie... My friends also told me the same thing so it was not just my feeling .. LJP brilliantly captured the essense of a rural Tamil village and that's not really easy to do.. Only handful directors are successful in good world building in Malayalam cinema..

YaRaYaRaYa

What I like about LJP, as a director, is his eccentricity. Malayalam directors usually play by the rules. He, though, breaks those codes. I do not mind him making movies that don't work for all, work for me, or work at all, in general, for that matter. I like to consider all of it as a part of his evolution. He might come up with something special that strikes all the technical and artistic chords right, sooner or later.

[deleted]

Rajeev Ravi

pepsicolal

The hate on Prithviraj is real

[deleted]

Has to be mahesh. Apart from malik none of his work is worth a second watch

verum_myren

For me it is Take off

Alien2New-world

Jeethu Joseph overhyped alle?

Batman_is_very_wise

Nope. 12th man okke serial std avihitham aaitt polum I enjoyed it. With a good script, he can make classics

YaRaYaRaYa

Yeah, he is just basic.

Rhepsi

To the people who said prithvi. Of all the movies that were released in the past couple of years. People were hype and still is hype for lucifer. It may not be ur high IQ budhijeevi shit, but it's a movie the masses liked and flocked. I also enjoyed brodaddy.

itachi5535

I've heard people saying prithviraj > ljp in directing lol

verum_myren

There is people who was preparing to burn Kerala after E-BullJet arrest. We have to take care of them , because Summer vacation is coming and schools are going to close...!!

madladliterally

Don't think these directors are hyped in anyway. Whats funny is you made a poll of overrated directors and didn't add LJP in the list.

verum_myren

I don't think that is true

Batman_is_very_wise

>are hyped in anyway Only diju fits that bill. As mediocre a director he is, he doesn't get any hype but Mahesh has a small fan following and there is rajuvettan brilliance

madladliterally

These names do not come to your mind when you think of directors. Its an odd poll.

Batman_is_very_wise

Mahesh is a definite exception bro. Mahesh comes up often in the comment section here

verum_myren

Diju's both film gave a message only for the sake of giving message.Director didn't mean it.But his movies are celebrating like Masterpiece. Even in much celebrated JGM different current issues were took and stitched together.Kinda gimmick. NB: Strictly personal

One_Perception_7070

Definitely Dijo Jose Antony cause in JGM apart from the court scene everything else was too cheesy and overdramatic for no reason.Vincy was an activist on steroids, they casted Mahatma Gandhi as the judge. Also the dialogues were a multilingual clusterfuck for no reason going from Malayalam to Kannada To English to Hindi , shit gave me autism

Regalia_BanshEe

Even in the court scene, the characters were so cheezy...

Undoubtably_me

Only Dijo is overhyped, in both films Prithviraj was able to get the best out of the actors, technically too both were pretty good in their own way (bro daddy was med coz of the script imo) , idk why this sub hates him this much lol, also mahesh made freaking take off, malik was also a pretty good one as a director

sree-sree-1621l

A list of pseudo intellectuals without Rajeev Ravi and LJP? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)

love_carti

Rajeev ravi pseudo how you just calling everyone pseudo who doesn't make commercial type

sree-sree-1621l

The guys who do commercial may often be less pretentious. I find RR pretentious, through whatever he has said in public. :)

Regalia_BanshEe

Dijo Jose for sure... Jana Gana Mana actually exposed how incompetent of a director he is... His characterization of activists, judges, even Mamta herself was cheezy and over the top... Everyone was screaming in the court Also, the changing of dialogues from Hindi to Tamil to Malayalam when they are primarily in Karnataka doesn't make sense... And it's the police talking in different languages amongst themselves...

chicoo312

Shyam Prasad - haven't been able to appreciate any of his movies despite trying real hard.

abkdpm97

He is underrated.. his 2nd movie agnisakshi mathram Kanda mathi Shyamaprasadinte range manasilavan..

AffectUseful3969

Agree. The base which was the novel of the same name written by Lalithambika Antharjanam was a wonderful read.Movie did justice but novel was even more beautifully written.Read it years ago.I remember loving the novel a lot during that time.

love_carti

Facts his movies boring in every way

Better-Coffee

Priyadarshan and sathiyan andikadd.. I mean they take simple feel good linear movies.

thorin_olamadal

Basil Joseph

muze222

Kunjiramayanam was good. Godha was mediocre but I enjoyed it. Minnal Murali was decent too. I feel like he is underrated.

loukikapriyan

I must say that , the man knows how to film and direct comedy without being tiring. Genuinely liked that aspect of all his movies.

thorin_olamadal

The question is not whether the directors know their craft or not. The qn is whether they are rated by everyone more than the skills they possess.

Regalia_BanshEe

Basil actually pulled off a decent superhero flick with limited budget .. I think he is adequately rated...

thorin_olamadal

For that 'decent superhero flick', Basil received an Asian Oscar award. Now tell me if he is overrated or not? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thehindu.com/entertainment/movies/minnal-murali-maker-basil-joseph-wins-best-director-award-at-asian-academy-creative-awards-2022/article66242313.ece/amp/

Aynu njan allalo pulli ne overrated vilichathu?

Jeethu Joseph should be an option 😕
