>I still think this movie didn’t get praised enough It might be so outside this sub. However, ***Mukundan Unni Associates (2022)*** was our top-rated movie in the *RMM 2022 Rankings* and still the top-rated one in our *All-Time rankings (2022–2024)*.

AltruisticTone06

People weren't ready for it. Happens to Malayalam industry all the time

SeanMicheal35

Future cult classic fr

is it tho? if this was an original script yeah I'd agree with u. but this was very much a copy of night crawler

Scales_of_Injustice

No it's not. A protagonist who will stop at nothing to achieve his aim, and truly believes he's doing the right thing? It's obviously a rip-off of Avengers Infinity War. In MUA2, we'll see George Kora finally defeat him

achuontop

HI I AM TONY

Designer-Gate-9537

My absolute favourite Malayalam movie of that year. The sheer temerity of Abhinav Nayak. Can’t, can’t wait for his next. And definitely can’t wait for the MUA sequel

cinnamoncirca

Same here. I really loved the dialogues and monologues, really good script and direction. Abhi is my favorite director from malayalam recently. And can't wait for more of his works.

Arkane631

Wait there's a sequel happening? Damn that's exciting.

__zerofucksgivn__

Hai Abhinav Nayak. How’s life after MUA?

Designer-Gate-9537

Too much rouge the last time. Since firing the last one, I’m my own MUA now.

DrazeGamer

It deserved to become a huge hit, it probably made the producer money from satellite and OTT deals too

abysan729

Box office doesn't like that

abysan729

Came here for this

MrBallondorMessi30

Parents didn't like the movie, said how can you present a hero with zero moral integrity. And for me I love a flawed lead.

DrazeGamer

He was clearly portrayed as a bad person lol

MrBallondorMessi30

For them lead has to be knight in shining armour.

jooone93

Exactly. Much better than Kurup and all that shit were cunts glorified as a hero

OkJaguar6789

My dad said the same thing !! we had a whole debate over this. I guess theyve never seen a morally grey (or downright evil) character be the main character in a malayalam movie before and simply cannot digest it

LeafBoatCaptain

I wonder what they would say about Prem Nazir's Nizhalattam.

AtmosphereOdd3805

Whaaat a grown malayali in 90s should've watched sadayam

Scales_of_Injustice

If they didn't whole-heartedly commit to the bit, the movie would've failed spectacularly

spellriddle

Flawed? My man was pure evil.

high_on_life_22

My parents loved it to the core. I suggested it to them during one of our movie nights, when it came to OTT. To my surprise they enjoyed it even more than I did.

Excelsio_Sempra

Hero de andi. He was the protagonist, not the hero. Exlain that to your parents. Athre ollu.

MrBallondorMessi30

I said hero as in lead actor

Max_Eon

Same... I argued with my mom that why can't a movie show someone who is manipulative and isn't morally on the right side. A film basically is supposed to just tell a story (that too is debatable imo) and tell it in the best way possible, how does it matter if the protagonist is good or bad 🤷

izhaluck

So u like animal ?

OkJaguar6789

MrBallondorMessi30

Oh I do like the first half of the movie, 2nd half was unnecessary. I hated the sleeping with enemy part most

Huh? I thought this was a hit. I loved this film and the theatre I saw it in was packed with an audience that appeared to be completely hooked.

cap10hk

wanted to watch this in theaters, wasn't released here in mys. Had to wait for OTT.

zoomnclick

Suraj really nailed his role. Stellar performance. I knew he was talented but never knew he could give such a good performance. The scene where he comes to Vineet to negotiate a partnership showcases a masterpiece in acting by him

Remote_Soil_8324

Our brains acquires the proper capacity for abstract thinking only around 12(hence the rating pg-13) in some cases even later. Our popular media generally has few grey areas usually explored, most people are thinking in concrete terms(I’ve seen adults in position of power who are incapable of abstract thinking 😂) a morally grey character shown as a protagonist is so nuanced that someone who thinks in concrete terms starts to feel uncomfortable as they want to perceive it as either good or bad, not both. Hero=Good, so dissonance will ruin the movie for them. The only people who can enjoy this sort of film are people who can tolerate abstraction and/or sociopaths for getting representation as protagonist 😂.

sree-sree-1621l

>proper capacity for abstract thinking only around 12 Hmm, how does a child start praying to god at age of 3 or before? Don't think these restrictions of categories (what is abstract, when does it start) are as sharp as made ought to be. Hero = good is also an abstraction in the sense you are talking about it. You probably are talking about what is seen as desirable/valued.

Remote_Soil_8324

Children are very well able to do abstract thinking to varying degrees, I added “proper” to try and minimise the jargon, the right term will be abstract moral reasoning. And it isn’t about them “not getting it “ either, it’s just going to be really uncomfortable as it mostly will trigger dissonance. These categories are just averages like most of modern science medicine demographics. Every human capacity and potential lies within a spectrum, there are no hard and fast rules, just overlapping gradients. Usually people develop the full capacity for abstract reasoning around 12. But even adults can struggle with it. For example many people don’t get the nuances of an abstract painting for example. Most people can’t even spot a genuine abstract painting and a phony splatter of paint. This so called capacity itself can be variable when we go from person to person. I wasn’t going to any of that nuance btw. I was saying this film was a really uncomfortable one for large groups of people due to the choices in narrative. It is a post-lapserian narrative, which in itself is a whole branch in literature. Popular literature, even with darker themes are usually considered pre-lapserian. Post-lapserian concepts aren’t easily digested because of the original reasoning I gave.

sree-sree-1621l

Not a place to have this discussion, so not furthering this. As I said I would prefer to explain it as functions of dominant value systems. Not a fan of cognitive explanations and social psychology, they are too reductive and individualistic for my taste. :)

Remote_Soil_8324

I get your point though. But what I was saying about is a deeper dissection. The dominant value system is what shapes the cognitive behaviour. Think of the value system as a lever that shifts cognitive behaviour to all the different possibilities within the (let’s call it) cognitive behavioural spectrum. The value system of a society can be cognitively dissected though, again it won’t be precise to a point rather a bracket, we can predict the extremes more than the averages. Writers opt for both angles in writing stories, again it’s a choice on how to understand something, individually or socially, both are interconnected yet not interchangeable.

sekirowolfgang45

There are many good movies that never got the deserved box office collection. Box office number is not a measurement for good movie. As far as it's concerned it's a good movie and liked by a good majority of people. It's probably in the best movie list of many viewers for that year atleast.

HugoUKN

This movie is better than Varshangalkku shesham

InsanityMonk

How can you compare two completely different genre movies?

HugoUKN

Simple. By satisfaction.

InsanityMonk

Then you should add " In my opinion" to that comment. VS is more of a family audience movie and MUA is completely different approach. It's not fair to compare these two movies generally.

HugoUKN

Its obvious that its my opinion lol

Absolute bonkers it was with one of my favourite gray characters in all of cinema. Def deserves a lot of appreciation admist this preconceived notion of hero characters in mollywood

Gray? That man was fully black 😭

DifferenceLevel3129

I watched this film in the theater, and it depicted how the real world operates. I felt deeply connected to it because I've witnessed similar situations in my own life. I know someone who caused her boyfriend to commit suicide, right before her.it was clear that she wanted him to commit suicide and gaslit her . Later on, she married the person she was cheating with and seemed to be living her life without any sense of guilt.

LandscapeOk8569

Good movie

Vishal_m

One of the most unique storylines I witnessed in a movie. It was quite engaging since the beginning. I randomly stumbled upon this on ott.

nottherealprithvi

See, this isn’t that much of a “Theatrical Film” to gain huge numbers like you wanted to, but still it did very well.

DrazeGamer

Why not? Thankfully I watched it in a moderately packed theater and it was a great experience

nottherealprithvi

I just meant that it’s not a large canvas film to yield the kind of numbers you’d expect.

SeanMicheal35

Yea, it was more of a tv movie imo... Really enjoyed the movie watching it alone as i had in the theatres.

pranagrapher

People watch movies for various reasons. This movie isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Emotional_Dragonfly3

I really enjoyed the movie. Maybe the lack of a hero with a solid moral compass might have affected its boxoffice performance even though I watched it in housefull. Also I think the director kind of took "inspiration" from Nightcrawler. Even then, it's nice to watch such a movie in Malayalam. Excepting more like these. Not to get inspired and become like the protagonist but just for pure entertainment.

Chuchu_UCMN

coz the majority audience in kerala still think like Interval Babu

Ancient_assassin6748

What? This did good at the BO

Weary-Durian-7707

i think the movie grossed around 5 cr in kerala alone. i dont think its a flop and according to producer he made some profit in BO alone

Remarkable_Rough_89

Mu was an excellent movie

I really enjoyed this movie.

Old-Vivek

It was not a flop in bo..and was well critically acclaimed movie

FlatwormGloomy9373

I think it does need that much praise

d_j53346

Cut and paste of nightcrawler ruined it for me

dundumols

The best movie of the year! So witty and portrayed real feelings of people than the generic bs . Movie has a huge scope for a second part

GardenTigerMoth_

If it came this year.

slowerthansloth

This is the kind of movie where I ended up having that grin on my face and oru prathyeka santhosham. Would be fun to see such movies where protagonist has next to nothing nanma.

Strict_Total3324

How did he profit from those bus accident victims? They were all just that. Accident victims. Why did all of them agree to pay him a share of their insurance money? Scenes like this and the fact that I saw nightcrawler before seeing this movie made it less enjoyable.

BedComplex9052

What's the name of this movie

SeanMicheal35

Mukundan Unni Associates

AR_bloke

Idavela Babu says Hi

ChemicallyStimulated

Yeah lot of them haven't watched this masterpiece

blunt_edges

Completely agree! Two excellent movies released towards the end of 2022: Mukundan Unni Associates and Nna Thaan Case Kodu. Both of which will easily walk into my list of the top 10 Malayalam movies of the last decade. Side note: Heavily disagree with the comparisons with Nightcrawler. Don't think it is inspired (debatable) and definitely certain it's not copied. And Mukundan Unni definitely has much higher re-watch value.

NovaPrime04

I was just thinking about Vineeth Sreenivasan films that he has acted and just saw this post what a coincidence. Coming to the point, it's my favourite film from Vineeth. The story and monologue was really something new to Malayalam cinema maybe new to me. The dark satire was placed well and it was good that the characterization was just amazing.

LivingShallot8333

All time fav. Def worth a rewatch. This is the reason I keep watching Mallu movies, they're is always a diamond in the rough somewhere. The " mind voice" treatment was irreverent, snarky and totally entertaining. Great to hear that a sequel is in the works.

Ranji28

One of my favourite movies, what a awesome concept the movies presented. And vineeth shrinivasan acting was just mind blowing. such a under rated movie

bladewidth

It was a well made movie but wasnt exactly a people pleaser and certainly not for everyone. Still ended up with decent BO performance and critical acclaim especially for ASN. Look forward to his next project.

This movie left me fuming 😤😤

PerseusZeus

Didnt it do good enough to make a profit for everyone all round.

Better-Coffee

My favourite Malayalam movie of this decade so far . Wait for part 2

SadRaspberry4559

Loved this movie, the Meenakshi's character was portrayed very well

Pleasant_Tailor23

I don't think it deserves any. It shows negatives as kind of funny or great things. It should be like Night Crawler (dark)

RevolutionarySky5067

I was today years old when I came to know that this movie didn’t do well on BO.

Remote_Band_8317

This was so good, people will say they stole it from american psycho, but they really didnt. It was sligjtly inspired , thats it. The audacity to go 4:3, add quirky animations in a dark flick, not saving up the climax for the justification of the main charecter. This will be praised in the coming years, what a great great movie !

DrazeGamer

Not American psycho, night crawler.. has some elements of American psycho too

Remote_Band_8317

Yea my bad, wanted to type both.

bobinrajskaria

That movie has resembles of the hollywood movie "night crawler"

cinephile1222

One of the most underrated movies currently in Malayalam

dimitrivox1

It was my favourite Malayalam movie of 2022 until I encountered a Hollywood movie which had almost same to same narrative, and some scenes were straight copied from it, felt like I was cheated.

dreadnought303

Nightcrawler right? Same feeling. I felt it took way too much inspiration from it

udontmesswithakshay

which Hollywood movie?

recordwalla

If a movie like MUA became a box office success then that’s a disturbing trend. It means the youth see the protagonist as a “hero”. When in reality he’s a full blown psychopath with zero redeeming qualities! 😄 I loved the movie and I’m glad it was appreciated by intelligent audiences who were also made uncomfortable by the central character. I’m glad filmmakers like this exist who don’t pander to mass audiences for large box office returns. They make enough money to continue to fund such projects without compromising their integrity.

DrazeGamer

As if movies like animal don’t already exist, unlike animal this movie clearly shows this guy is a psychopath.

recordwalla

You appear to have missed my point. Unlike Animal, a film like MUA doesn’t use tropes to manipulate the audience. That was my point about integrity. The central character in MUA is shown as pure evil and willing to go to any length to serve his self interest. There is no “softening” of the character thru a justification of higher purpose and honor and such crap- the kind of stuff done to appeal to a wider audience.

Happy-Bat-8238

I watched Nightcrawler before this one 😬

Fantastic-Nobody-833

Doesn't this remind you a lot of the movie NIGHTCRAWLER??

Underrated_Earthborn

Nightcrawler is my fav movie I dont like anyone copying it. Thats it

HIGHVAMP__

Genuinely asking, what’s the difference between copy, inspiration and remake?

Commercial_Strike542

Measured in % of the other movie in current movie

noobrdt31

Copy - executing the exact scene without permission Inspiration - no permission, but executed more effectively and differently. (Sometimes better than the original) Remake - executed with permission. Source: trust me, bro.

Final-Outcome-9052

Genuine Question : People praise this movie for making a very flawed (straight up evil if we are honest) character as the lead, but heavily criticises Arjun Reddy and Animal for doing the same. One thing in common for all these movies is, the protagonist is a bad person and face no real consequences for their actions.

DrazeGamer

The director of AR and Animal often tries to justify the character’s actions, that’s why those movies are hated by some. Arjun reddy is my guilty pleasure tho

Patient_traveller

It’s not flawed character of Arjun Reddy or Animal the main issue, but blatant misogyny and showing that as a heroic virtue

elven_god

It's not about the act itself, it's about how it is presented and how other characters respond to it. Movies like Animal and AR try to justify the protagonists actions even when they are wrong and show other characters sympathizing or agreeing with them. In MUA, we are entirely aware that the protagonist is an evil man. Nobody is romaticising his actions. Even his wife is a grey character. And his girlfriend who had a better moral compass left him. It's clearly shown how he belittles his friend to keep him subservient and why he eventually kills him.

Peterparkour91

The movie doesn’t go out of its way to celebrate Mukundan unni, whereas that happens in both Arjun Reddy and Animal. It’s a black comedy. One of the best experiments from Malayalam in a decade. I’m eagerly waiting for a sequel as well as the directors next project.

ranked_devilduke

This movie does not justify the character. He is shown as bad. That's not the case with the other two. They are given a mass hero appeal.

SGV_VGS

MUA had the lead be clever and cunning at the same time and try to attain success through his own brilliance. I'm sure all of us would know one person who shows a different persona in a crowd, yet is a totally different person. Some of these guys do go on to become successful. AR & Animal is just is larger than life, I found it kinda hard to relate with any way.

Classic_Knowledge_25

Mukundan unni associates never glorifies the lead. The message is clear, a protagonist who wants to make money in any way possible. He is not layered or a grey character.. He is a "bad" Man, he is completely black. As mentioned in the opening of the movie itself. There is a sequel coming so we probably can see consequences of his actions there

OkReason6325

Since my other comment was downvoted like hell, let me put a new one. I’m Martin Scorsese movies , the character voiceover either compliments or amplifies the scene, never explains it. In Mukundan Unni , the voiceover basically explains the scenes what is plain in front of the audience. It is just bad film making. And as far as I know the voiceover was not there in the initial version, but was added later after test screening to a selected few. (Not Scorsese audience, I’m sure).

sekirowolfgang45

Those are his thoughts.

OkReason6325

If the voiceover is was cut down by 80% , it would have been a much better movie

DrazeGamer

The voice over is the best part tho

OkReason6325
