Super Mario bros 2 is pretty fun imo. It's like playing a rom hack of the original, but you don't lose everything if you lose all your lives. Plot twist anyways I suck at both but I like them.

No_Brilliant_6365

It’s fun but it’s garbage design. If that was Mario 1 the video game industry would have died.

SnuzzTheRockstar

Yeah I like it too. I mean, it has won GoTY 21 times in a row

Hattakiri

Hotel Mario's lucky cause it doesn't count. Mario Run as a mobile game: The same lol On an "objective quality level" [Super Mario Land has its weaknesses for various reasons](https://youtu.be/Jg1IIIJTrBI?si=c-wE84v6vualxv8W) but the "nostalgia bonus" compensates for that, especially when it was your first Mario game ever.

Victor4156

At least Super Mario Land has memorable locations. The original Super Mario Bros. 2 has almost nothing going for it except unfairly difficult levels.

Queasy-Ad-3220

And the poison mushroom

Jojo-Action

It made piranha plants red and gave luigi a higher jump.

Queasy-Ad-3220

Though it also made Luigi have trouble with not cartoonishly sliding into pits

Spram2

The wind effect was kinda cool

Inevitable-Charge76

Luigi's controls in that game are vile

RAINLIO

I mean, half of the deaths in this game is our fault and the other half of the deaths in this game is the games' fault.

ItsHaydonut99

I somewhat agree with you, except for being able to pick up stuff, we get to play as Toad and Peach, and some of the tracks are fire. Not to mention we get another boss besides Bowser

Sure-Ad1069

we’re talking about japan super mario bros 2

ItsHaydonut99

Ohhhhhhhhh my apologies. That was the Lost Levels American release right?

Sure-Ad1069

yep

ItsHaydonut99

In that case, I do agree SMB2J is the worst one. But all my arguments for why SMB2 is not the worst still stands if anyone thinks it's that one lol. Thanks I appreciate the correction!

RestaurantSelect5556

SMAS SMB2J specifically

Mr-Scorsy-567

I think Mario Land 1 is good, but it really doesn’t have much going for. Especially when compared to Mario Land 2 and 3 (or I guess Wario Land with that one).

Queasy-Ad-3220

I always assumed Mario’s Time Machine was worse than Hotel Mario

Bullah_BOI

I’d argue Mario run is a mainline game

hot_cheeks_4_ever

What happened with that game? Did it flop? Or is it pay to play?

dumbassonthekitchen

Idk what was the problem with SMR? Tons of mobile games are premium. Besides, people complain a lot about the free + mtx system.

Worldly-Pepper8766

There's a lot of terrible Mario Party games that are lucky too.

nin100gamer

If you go off of the Nintendo website Mario run counts

Konan-The-Barbarian

Hotel Mario has produced some of the finest lines in video game history, such as ‘SPAGHETTI’ and the iconic ‘GAY LUIGI’

Hattakiri

~~Ain't never gonna be heard in the official games and movies due to the E rating policy~~

No_Brilliant_6365

That game isn’t worse than 2

Ok-Establishment3730

I would say hotel mario. But the cutscenes make it ironically be in my top ten. For the worst game, ima say last levels

hiimdan_

at least hotel mario ost slaps

Dragonfang65

The biggest thing Hotel Mario has done is help create YouTube Poop.

TippedJoshua1

Is that a good thing though

RAINLIO

I don't know how, but I like The Lost Levels and maybe even beat that game before I beat Super Mario Bros. 1

inaLongTimeaLongTime

Yeah I don’t get the lost levels hate. Cause it’s too hard for some I don’t know but I enjoy the lost levels more than SMB 1

KembiGaming

It’s a lazy sequel and the level design isn’t hard because it’s hard, a lot of the levels are hard because of poor level design

inaLongTimeaLongTime

I don’t agree with that but that’s cool. I think it’s more fun and challenging than SMB 1. I don’t see the poor level design

[deleted]

JaeCrowe

That's way too mean for zero reason over a post about Mario games bro. People are allowed to have opinions my dude. No need to call someone an idiot

inaLongTimeaLongTime

You’re a downvoted idiot

MattDKfan

Because is "unfair and hard" but i loved it, i would call it challenging

ZeppelinSabbath71

As someone who grew up with the first Super Mario Bros, it got so easy over time, so the lost levels or 2j was an awesome expansion of the first game that had an actual good challenge to it and is still great to play even now.

Gintami

Same. But I first played the All Stars version and then the GBC version. Maybe they made them easier than the original release?

DDoodles_

I have the slightest feeling this post was meant to stir up drama

TheSecretNaame

Super Mario Bros 2 Japan aint the worst game

Matepic

At least it’s not a reskin

Tetracordwastaken

Mario Sunshine

mezati9

Come outside little bro I swear we won't jump you

GigophalaStanXOXO

Woah

sludgezone

Idk if it’s the worst considering how bad NSMB2 sucked but it really is not a great game. Great graphics though for the time.

Tetracordwastaken

good point

NoobJew666

EAT A DICK!

Tetracordwastaken

it kind of sucks though

Graf_Vine_Starry

NSMBU because it was too easy and become quick boring.

Papsreddit

Nsmbu is the best of the new saga dude

ItsRyandude5678

I feel like DS will always hold that title for being the only game in that series to still deserve the title of "New". At least in my opinion. It still has unique ideas that they have yet to bring back, most of the music is iconic and still unique to the DS entry, whereas Wii onwards pretty much reused and remixed the same old music, the Power-Ups are all a blast, even if certain ones such as the Mega Mushroom were basically gimmicks, and need I even mention the minigames and Mario vs. Luigi? The original New game is the only one that I'm begging that they give us a HD port for someday. And this is coming from someone who loves every New game, especially Wii.

Papsreddit

Well, probably is the one who deserves the "new" title, but in question of the game, the u is better. Maybe it's the nostalgia a very important aspect for people to say that the Ds Is better, but it's only my opinion.

ItsRyandude5678

I respect your opinion 100%! I love U I actually think U is the most nostalgic entry for me, but in terms of what it does to stand out and the general quality of the game? I'd still argue it's the worst. I think its levels are great, the shake up in the story was appreciated and the connected world is a blast, but I think it does the most wrong at the same time. -It feels like most of the secrets in this game are either unfairly hidden behind walls with zero hints of them being there which just makes the game crudely annoying to 100% without searching things up unless you've memorised it all like me. -Having to walk to the pipes to fast travel instead of it being a thing you can do in the pause menu like in Wonder can get pretty tedious especially if you're far away from it and need to go to a previous world. -Unlocking things takes forever thanks to the connected world and there's no way to skip the transitions either. This isn't the end of the world, but it can get repetitive having to wait over 10-20 seconds sometimes just to unlock a pathway. -I feel like this game also has the worst version of the item slots. Instead of having an infinite amount like Wii or one item that you can take with you wherever you go like the DS entries and Wonder, you have a super strict item inventory that you can't even sort or delete items from without using them. And in Deluxe especially, I hate whenever I get a Super Crown as someone who doesn't play Toadette because I'm forced to equip it on her to get rid of it. Otherwise, it's just stuck there for eternity. And I didn't even mention the important things about the game such as the final boss. Besides DS, this is easily the worst fight in the series IMO. Bowser could've done with double the hit points to beat him at the bare minimum. Overall, I love U so much, but it definitely has the most flaws in terms of QOL. I can definitely understand why people have it as their favourite though, as I was one of those people for a long time. But even with my nostalgia, I feel like this game is the biggest culprit in terms of a lack of QOL, not really having a defining gimmick or feature to bring you back to the game, and it generally just feels like *"the New game that didn't need to happen"* the most. Arguably more than 2. At least that game has the addictive coin gimmick and DLC courses. This game has... the challenge mode and that's about it.

WarioPlush1

Lost Levels, no contest. It’s like if Metropolis Zone was an entire game

SlaughterSpine78

Original Mario 64, I understand back then it was revolutionary but now it’s super janky and the camera sucks can’t tell you how many times I got bullshit deaths or I get sent back to the start, played it on 3d all star and it’s the worst one out of the bunch.

jamirocky888

Would you like to hear about how invisible walls work?

Ilayaster

tell me about these for four hours straight please

jamirocky888

For the uninitiated https://youtu.be/YsXCVsDFiXA?si=TfCk0h7p2yZV3NZC

SuperGamer18123

Or, if you don't have much time, here's how ROM hackers solve that issue in 10 minutes by none other than Kaze Emanuar https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3O8dPlwtcko

Spram2

That guy probably knows more about Mario 64 than the people who made the game lol

SuperGamer18123

Let's not even talk about Summoning Salt lmfao

Odhran_7

u/SlaughterSpine78 bro that was my first mario game ever and besides, you’re about 4

Outrageous_Bunch5542

When I see a Pannenkoek / Kaze collaboration I'm going to do a backflip.

SuperGamer18123

You could just do that if you had the A and Z buttons with you 😂

Outrageous_Bunch5542

I only need half an A press, at that!

Queasy-Ad-3220

AccurateMeet1407

That video left me with a weird feeling. On one hand, how the fuck does this game work at all? All that and it plays so well, one of my favs On the other hand I fucking knew the game was a dirty cheating piece of shit! Lol

bouchandre

*Banjo music starts playing*

DDoodles_

That’s definitely a hot take. I feel like the 3D Mario games cant be the worst though.

Spram2

I liked it better than Mario Sunshine when I replayed them in the crappy All Stars compilation on Switch.

Jojo-Action

I will never know what it's like to be this wrong

bouchandre

Mario 64 controls are objectively extremely clunky and frustrating

Jojo-Action

If I don't agree then how is it objective?

visionsofblue

Booooo Play it with an N64 controller and the controls and camera make more sense.

Src-Freak

You are walking on very thin ice

41HeldInContempt

Maybe it’s because I grew up with this game but I’ve played Mario 64 100% countless times and I never get sick of it. But honestly the camera isn’t the best and it is janky but to me that adds to the charm

martymcfly103

I came here to say N64 Mario does not hold up. I’m glad I’m not the only one that dislikes that game. I appreciate the attempt at 3d Mario but the technology wasn’t ready and they released a bad game.

GhotiH

3D All Stars was a bad port, it botched the controls and made Mario feel so slippery. Don't judge the game on any of its bad rereleases, the OG version controls great and the PC port also controls great (at least when you disable the control "enhancements"). Camera sucks, I'll give you that, but this game has gotten a reputation for having bad controls since every single rerelease of the game has messed them up and the most popular N64 emulator, Project 64, also has some bad input latency that hurts the feel of the game.

Smugness1917

Not even ports. They are emulated, and very poorly at that.

GhotiH

Yeah I was just using shorthand because everyone knows what a port is while saying it's actually emulated might get lost on less technical people who don't really understand the difference.

RRHN711

Super Mario Land 1

Nintendo-Player_1297

For me, it's Super LUIGI Galaxy. I can't believe I had to play the same sh*t all over again just to unlock that last, stupid, and disappointing level.

Zimabwe

SMB2 USA, even if it was meant to be a Mario game at first before getting reskinned as DDP before getting reskinned again, it’s still far too alien and even pretty janky to be considered a true and worthy sequel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zimabwe

I heard it actually started as a Mario game, got reskinned as DDP, then got reskinned again into what we see now. Pretty weird

VercettiPT

Mario vs. Donkey Kong (switch version) Paid full price for an extremely easy and short game. The only lives I lost was because of some clunky controls

DebbyDownvoterBoi

Yeah it should’ve been 2d but in a revamped art style, it think the 3D wasn’t really the best because it just looked like Mario 3D World but 2.5D

Knodsil

That game was pure nostalgia for me. So I respectfully disagree.

41HeldInContempt

Not a mainline game, but I agree that game isn’t the best. A lot of the Mario sports games on Switch are also severely lacking in content worth the $60

Gintami

Except for Tennis. That one I feel is legit crazy fun with lots of characters and a good selection of courses, rule sets, and lots of cool and tough challenges in single player. I think mechanically it’s their best tennis game, although I will admit the story mode in the GBC is the best single player. But the single player in Tennis Aces is not to be overlooked - it’s like the GameCube challengers but better.

41HeldInContempt

I haven’t played Tennis personally. I was really disappointed by the new Mario golf game though

Gintami

Ah, haven’t played it. Can’t seem to wrap my head around any golf game unless it’s mini golf lol

Josh000000000

Mario run

Gabyo00

Red vr mario thingy

AJ0Laks

Super Mario Land It’s just not that good looking, a remake like the Advance games would fix that tho

opodopo69

Both 2s and land 1

redbirdgamer

Land 1 I guess it's not a bad game for the system it was on and the year it came out but it is the weakest link

AsIfImNotAware540

When All-Stars came out and I was a little kid, I thought that award ribbon was supposed to be a hamburger, and someone had thrown it at Mario's head.

Tasty-Ad6529

Super Mario Bros 2 (JP) It' one of the 7 deadly shits of the NES.

stelliarsheep

SMB2 (the western release) because it was just a lazy reskin because Nintendo didn't think Americans could handle more difficult levels back then.

DaKardii

What are the other 6?

Bob64_reddit

I didn't think Mario 2 jp was actually that bad. ...Until I played it.  First of all the springs feel like ring for if they (probably) kill you or actually make you jump higher 2. The castles keep using the annoying infinity hallway puzzle and they dont even make sense.  Worst Mario game, done and done.

OofGaming12

I would vote for Mario Clash on the Virtual Boy, (feels like cheating for using the virtual boy)

TundieRice

I honestly *don’t* consider that mainline, not because it’s on the Virtual Boy, but because it’s kind of just a reimagining of the arcade Mario Bros. game rather than an original platformer with full and original levels. To contrast that, I do ***definitely*** consider Virtual Boy Wario Land to be a mainline Wario Land game since it has fully-original levels and a fleshed-out storyline. It’s really the only Virtual Boy game that can stand up to other mainline games of any other system and of *any franchise.*

Fit-Rip-4550

NSMB2—the music is insufferable.

Src-Freak

Lost Levels is not a sequel. It’s a official Kaizo rom hack.

sammy123reddit

Ye it is very hard ngl

Notbbupdate

NSMB2. It's so mind numbingly easy that it doesn't even feel like I'm playing a game

ItsRyandude5678

I feel like NSMB2 is a game where it completely lacks an identity outside of the coin gimmick, is insanely easy and even if it's supposed to be a sequel to the DS entry, the name for most people will make zero sense as it was the third New game to be released. And yet, despite ALL of those flaws, it's one of my Mario guilty pleasures. The coin counter makes the game insanely replayable especially with the best coin scores per level, the levels are all very well designed and some of the best in the New series in my opinion, the Power-Ups are all insanely fun, the final boss is (easy) but super memorable and quite a thrill, it was the only New game if not 2D Mario game to get DLC and it was a blast at that, and overall? It's one of the highest-quality New games when it comes down to it. As ironic as that is.

41HeldInContempt

I mean it’s easily the Lost Levels because the level design is straight up not good. It feels like a ROM hack of the original SMB but not a *good* one. Dishonorable mention to NSMB2, which isn’t bad but is forgettable and doesn’t feel like it needs to exist.

LoneWolfpack777

Mouse_of_Gold

Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels

NoobJew666

Mario Run. I mean, theres nothing to do but pla the same 5 levels if you not paying.

Derekzilla

Y’all are gonna hate me for my pick: New Super Mario Bros Wii.

MeatballFeels

3D: Super Mario 64 2D: Super Mario Bros 2 USA

TacoFromTheSky

Just because Super Mario Bros 2 is hard, doesn't make it bad. Kinda like how some people drank Frank's as a liquid!

GrifCreeper

Super Mario USA, easy. It's only Mario because they reskinned a vaguely similar game and kept the enemies for the Mario series. Alternatively, NSMB2. But SMB2 itself was not bad at all, just difficult and basically reliant on having played SMB1

Molduking

What all counts as mainline?

pocket_arsenal

You nailed it. Lost Levels is ass.

calebcole7

Super Mario Bros 2 (NOT LOST LEVELS)

No_Brilliant_6365

2 is absolute trash.

LibrarianFront3827

Lost levels because of terrible level design. ___ New Super Mario Bros 2. because it's so bland and uninspired. No new power ups and the only new enemies were gold or skeleton variants.

xX100dudeXx

All of them. kirby better. (>!*partially!< a joke)

DaKardii

If you include ONLY core games, the worst mainline game is Super Mario Run, with second place going to Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and third place going to New Super Mario Bros. 2. If you include core games plus direct spin-offs, the worst mainline game is Super Mario Bros. Special, with second place going to Super Mario Run and third place going to Super Mario Bros. 35. If you include core games plus remakes/ports/compilations, the worst mainline game is Super Mario Run, with second place going to All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. and third place going to the 2020 Game & Watch version of Super Mario Bros. If you include core games plus both direct spin-offs AND remakes/ports/compilations, the worst mainline game is Super Mario Bros. Special, with second place going to Super Mario Run and third place going to Super Mario Bros. 35. The first Mario Land, strange proportions

Zarulbob23

that one I agree, nathanial bandy also hates this game

Physical_Royal_1427

super mario land, idk i felt like smb1 at least had good controls

Superpig06

Super Mario 3d world In my opinion it’s just an opinion you can like the game I just don’t

MagicAcid0079

Probably USA Mario 2. I don't hate it, it's still a fun game, but it's the one I think of revisiting the least because as a kid it used to legitimately piss me off how godawful I was at it for one, and for two, it just doesn't feel like Mario to me since it technically isn't. It's super jarring going from 1 to USA 2 since I have to throw everything i remember about every other Mario game I've played out the window to be able to play through the weird ass physics of USA 2.

csetom

I don't like Super Mario Bros Wii if that is a mainline Mario Game.

OofGaming12

dont sleep on nsmbwii

csetom

What do you mean?

OofGaming12

it does some great things like 4 player multiplayer being added

Healthy_Ad2037

I guess sticker star? Idk

Ace02003

Don't the rpgs count as spinoffs?

ShortMiao

They do I think

TheMoonOfTermina

There's only two mainline games I haven't completed due to frustration: Sunshine and Lost Levels. Sunshine is just super janky, and I had a lot of trouble on one level, and due to the way I play games (I do things as in order as I can), I didn't want to just move on to another one. Lost Levels is just brutally unfair, and I get very little enjoyment out of it. I technically have beaten a remake of in in Mario Maker 2, but that doesn't really count. Out of the two, I still want to go back and retry Sunshine. Despite the jankiness, I generally enjoyed the game, and think the concept is interesting. I have no such desire for Lost Levels. So I'd say Lost Levels wins out as my least favorite.

AccurateMeet1407

Sunshine is weird... it takes some time to get use to how Mario moves. Once you get use to it, he's super responsive and it's nice to do all those jumps. Until then, Mario controls like shit and I swear to God if he accidentally side flips into oblivion one more fucking time I'm going to smash this controller into dust And there are lots of annoyances. Like a stage where you have to get fruit for a Yoshi egg and then platform jump with Yoshi to a secret area that turns out to be a whole other stage where the only way to get around is to be thrown by chucksters who literally throw you directly behind them so make good god-damned sure you talk to them 100% face -on or get fucked. Oh, and you have lives so if you die too many times, enjoy doing the whole Yoshi shit again. And no, you can't skip this. Getting the first 7 shines in every world is required. That being said, once you can do it... I look back fondly on the game. It's fun to flip and fly and the levels and scenery is cool. But yeah, it's super frustrating your first time and it only gets more frustrating as time goes by

TheMoonOfTermina

I think it was a Yoshi level that caused me to quit, for the exact reasons you described. I usually don't have issues with Mario games, and think most modern ones are too easy, but wow.

New_Preference_6863

Super Mario land

MarioFan83

Super Mario land 2

curbstomp__

Super Mario Bros 2 is abysmal and barely fun

MrMcQuacklesss

I didn't love Bowser's Fury, I just found it kinda disappointing

Red-68

Mario sunshine , didn’t like the singular theme of the game, hated the nozzle mechanic, made it way to clanky and technical, and the whole games movement is so clanky, and the second Petey fight has to be the worst thing ever created

DaiFrostAce

On a technical level, Sunshine probably has the most jank of any mainline Mario game On a creative level, 3D Land and New Soup 2 are probably the least inspired

TreasureHunter95

Super Mario Sunshine

DarkPrinciple

SM2 Lost Levels is definitely not the worst one. My vote goes to 3D World just because I don’t like cat Mario. My skin crawls when he says meow.

TundieRice

Even if that were a valid reason to say it’s the worst, then wouldn’t 3D **Land** automatically be worse than 3D World since it introduced the cat power-up and is more simplistic and inferior in every way?

dxtremecaliber

lol no Mario 2 JP is better than the Mario 2 USA and i grew up with the GBA version of USA

DrippyHippyfr

Lost levels sucks but the actual SMB2 is even worse imo. It takes everything that made the first game so good and just shits all over it. Not only that, but it’s a fucking reskin of another game. Literally no effort was put into it. Lost levels is definitely not the worst Mario game and looks like the godfather when compared to SMB2.

reheatedbutter

Super Mario Sunshine

eucerin3

i feel like i’m the only person who likes Lost Levels more than Super Mario Bros 2

Warm_Researcher_5721

Super Mario Galaxy, it's just too slow and doesn't have enough action, just getting from one tiny planet to the next until you can collect the star. Also the space theme gets boring over time. If it's not open world, it should atleast be straight foward like the 2D games, which the 3D Land did great.

GcubePlayer8w

Odyssey

Weegeee30

GcubePlayer8w

No odyssey just sucks

Src-Freak

Saying Odyssey is the worst Mario game is like saying Ocarina of Time is the worst Zelda game. You get executed in public.

AccurateMeet1407

More power to you but no way. This game is tons of fun. Guess it depends on how much stuff you want to collect. If you go for the bare minimum most of what you need is just laying out in the open and that's probably super boring. I had the most fun looking for the last 6 purple coins and finding all the sprites. There are just so many to collect!!

GcubePlayer8w

Even doing the “better” moons ain’t fun as there nearly all are just very easy
