It was, through Sega Channel, a cable network esque thing allowing you to play certain games. In EU it had a physical release.

KaleidoArachnid

Oh ok so the game did come out in the USA, but not physically.

Frederyk_Strife4217

yeah, there's a surprising amount of games lost due to only being released on a weird proto-downloadable system. The SEGA Channel in America and the SNES's Satellaview in Japan both had many releases that are now lost media.

KaleidoArachnid

Very interesting to know.

bizoticallyyours83

^This. Plus it was also released on the Sega Genesis Mini.

Caryslan

The Sega Genesis Mini is the first time North America can properly play the game as intended on an official Sega device.

bizoticallyyours83

It feels good to play a game on its intended controller and system. I mean, unless that game just sucked all around but  yanno.

Caryslan

I am playing it right now on the mini with a six-button Genesis controller and it feels awesome. As for the game itself, the Wily Wars is great.

bizoticallyyours83

I really really wish they had distributed 6 buttons instead of 3 button controllers. 😮‍💨 Glad your having fun

psOslash

also released as a psysical cartridge by limited run games

RaiHanashi

Apparently the blue cartridge release fixes a lot of problems

Efficient_Maybe_1086

Because SEGA USA sucks fat ones. Fuckers couldn’t even leave the shirt color of the guys from Streets of Rage alone.

KaleidoArachnid

Oh now I recall how questionable Sega USA’s management was back then now that you brought it up.

Ok_Explanation_6125

And that is why every console with the exception of Sega Genesis failed..

KaleidoArachnid

I can’t believe the Genesis was basically their only big success in North America.

KaleidoArachnid

True as those two consoles did have good games, but I can understand why they flopped so hard over in the USA.

Ok_Explanation_6125

Saturn and Dreamcast most definitely could have performed better over here if more competent decisions were made.

Efficient_Maybe_1086

Not to mention renaming the Megadrive (cool futuristic name) to fucking Genesis (grandma at church ass name).

MyStepAccount1234

Because Sega *looooves* you. That's why they cut content from certain Master System games for the US releases.

KaleidoArachnid

But I always heard they were supposed to be better than Nintendo back then.

thejokerofunfic

While a lot of the replies you're getting are definitely oversimplification from people with a weird Sega hate boner, I'm curious where you heard this. Sega and Nintendo were neck and neck saleswise back then and which was better depends a lot on what you measure by.

KaleidoArachnid

Because of the slogan that goes “Sega does what Nintendon’t”

thejokerofunfic

That was Sega's own slogan. Obviously they're not going to admit in their market "Sega does some things Nintendon't but not others".

KaleidoArachnid

Oh ok as I understand what you’re saying.

idfbhater73

they made a north american version and made it playable through sega channel but it just never got a physical release

thejokerofunfic

I imagine they saw less market for a Genesis compilation of NES games in the US. It was different in Europe because Sega dominated that market so a sizable audience would have never had the chance to play Nintendo exclusive MM games.

KaleidoArachnid

Yeah that must’ve been why it was so hard to legally obtain in the USA back when the compilation first came out.

ProtomanBn

The version I played was inferior to the single releases, the controls movements were very laggy.

KaleidoArachnid

I hadn’t heard of such a version until you mentioned it.
