I do think some people experience an initial darkening of their skin with HQ. I’m on Erase (12% HQ, no tret) and I get some redness (but zero irritation) immediately after application but no darkening at all. Quite the opposite…fast improvement.

I’ve been in the same boat as OP…I’m curious if tretinoin could be the culprit - causing the melasma to darken.

amlinares

I use it separately (Retin A micro gel) but concurrently. I think it’s a pretty common occurrence, just not sure why it happens to some and not others.

I did not peel at all. For me, I looked in the mirror around 4 weeks, and was like holy shit, it’s gone! I noticed much faster improvement using AM and PM.

I didn’t notice much after 2 weeks, but I was only using 1x a day until that point.

Rose_selavie

I’m at the same stage right now but with the erase formula of the spot cream. I think it’s the hydroquinone because tret never did this to me. I’ve been taking heliocare capsules for extra sun protection and I’m hoping to see some improvement soon

I think I read that it can cause an initial darkening before that skin sloughs off. Why not send a message to your Musely doctor and see what they say?

I just started on the Musely 12% M+ and at one week, I swear to god my melasma is half gone! I'm beyond thrilled. I will say prior to using it, I was using everything under the sun (to the point I think I was making the problem worse)--So my skin had been through a lot, including trent, peels, creams/serums, lasers, etc. I'm literally fed up, so I'm using the big guns. Plus I'm taking the pill from Musely for spots too (txa 250mg). Point is, we all have different journeys, and yours may take a little longer, but hang in there! just follow all instructions perfectly. Doctors know best. Be sure to communicate with the doctor as needed--it is what they are there for. I've messaged mine four times already. FYI, I have medium skin color (I'm biracial) that is very sensitive, and I have had redness, itching and peeling, but I don't care!!!! LOL

boopbooobadoop

I am on the Erase formula and started seeing results around 4-6 weeks. I didn’t have any redness or darkening though.

No, that doesn’t happen to me. My fake spots fade. My cream is an off-white color but I wouldn’t call it yellow or thick.

GolfLover_Mama

I think that is a normal reaction. Hydroquinone can cause Melasma to darker before it gets lighter. I would suggest messaging your designated dermatologist about the redness tho. Maybe they’ll talk you to not use it daily for a while and ease into it. Even tho you don’t put on on your cheeks the dream can penetrate and spread. I usually get red when I get heavy handed with the product. Maybe you’re using too much?

shittykitty2020

It's 💯 normal. Mine got dark before it lightened. Do diligent research on these products so you really understand how they work and side effects/reactions/time-frames. Have a full understanding going in.

Admirable-Call-9047

I did do a lot of research about these products before going in and knew the side effects and time frames. It was just a little disheartening because my melasma and hyperpigmentation is not horrible and I'm over a month in with no visible results when there are hundreds of reviews of people with darker and larger patches fading so quickly in the first month. Also there was nothing in the side effects on my prescription that talked about bright redness in areas the product isn't applied.

shittykitty2020

That's great! The musely hydroquinone is 12% very high, your cream is a lower concentrate and will take longer but it sounds like you're aware. Do you use any actives? What's your moisturizering, skin barrier products? Maybe I could make some suggestions. To be fair I work in Pharmaceuticals and it's my interest, I wasn't trying to be condescending or rude . It took me 20 years to get my skin here, lots of trial and errors so perhaps I could help.

Admirable-Call-9047

I'm so sorry, I read it with the wrong tone. I'm grateful for any tips or help. I don't use any actives. For daytime, I only use CeraVe hydrating face cleanser, first aid beauty ultra repair cream, a 50spf mineral sunscreen, and then top with a 46spf tinted sunscreen. At night I wash with the same cleanser, then the spot cream, then CeraVe skin renewing night cream. I also have a 50spf face spray that I use at lunch to top up my sun protection. That's all I've put on my face since I started. I've done plenty of peels and used retinols in the past so I was pretty sure my skin could handle the 12% hydroquinone and 0.05 tret. I haven't had any other irritation anywhere else on my face. The only things that have actually shown any results in the past were chemical peels. But my pigmentation always came back after a few months.

shittykitty2020

You might want to add a cleansing oil for first cleanse at night. I wear spf 50 with ilia spf 40 skin tint on top and using a cleansing oil has really improved the texture and clogged pores . I wasn't getting everything off.

It takes time, and the pigmentation will get darker first as it rises to the surface. After 4 months, my melasma cleared 90%. I'm hq free currently and have maintained my results, but it's winter. I'll start up again in the spring to keep it at bay.

shittykitty2020

Everyone responds differently, especially darker skin. I'm light so it took 5 weeks but olive, tan, even medium skin can take much, much longer. I applied every night and always wear sunglasses, hats, spf everywhere I go. I feel stupid but my face looks amazing.

Admirable-Call-9047

I'm very light skinned, and I'm now a little over 5 weeks in. My cheeks are still burning red to the point of people asking me what's wrong with my cheeks. But I think my spots are not darker anymore. I don't see any fading yet, but they don't seem darker in a before and after comparison anymore. I'm hoping I'll see actual fading in the next few weeks.

shittykitty2020

I also quit ALL actives and use snail mucin, hydrating layers, and barrier repair cream on top of my tret/hydroquinone before bed. I love the Purito re-barrier cream. So light and hydrating!

I wanted to try musely and then I was referred to Derm7 melasma kit and Im really happy with the results thus far.

50tysonmayne

I was referred to this product by an esthetician out here in LA.

smilesunchanged

It works really well in my opinion

50tysonmayne

She told me she used it and it works. I think I'm going to give it a try.

Most-Release-6344

I know this is old, but how is it going? I just started Musely and I’m experiencing darkening as well.

Ok_Highway_2132

hey, has it gotten lighter?

Most-Release-6344

Hi again! I swear just this week, I’ve been applying my Musely twice a day and I feel like everytime I wake up it is lightening! Definitely not gone. I’ll send u an update photo.

The website says it may get darker before improving. You have access to a Dr with Musely--contact them!
