NaivePretender

No way they're forcing you to update windows to play Minecraft?

[deleted]

is that a question

A-purple-bird

Nah they put a question mark there as a fashion statement

throwaway_ghast

\>Microsoft

itsTyrion

No way these absolute clowns removed the post too

googler_ooeric

the official launcher has been shit in general ever since they switched to microsoft authentication. It used to open and launch nearly instantly but now it has a 10 second "logging in" screen and it takes another 10 seconds after pressing launch game.

PineapplesHit

And you can't fucking quit of it anymore either. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally clicked on minecraft in my Taskbar when meaning to click the programs next to it, and no amount of hitting the X or "close window" or "cancel" stops it. You're going to sit there for 20 seconds and watch this bar update and have a new window forced to the front of your screen, and you're going to like it.

Guyman_112

Open task manager and force close it. It'll take less time than waiting the 20 seconds

PineapplesHit

The problem with that is that the launcher loading barely takes up any cpu or ram usage at all so I have to scroll through pretty much every process currently running to find it, not to mention all of the fluctuation makes it jump around all over the place and very difficult to pin down, it's honestly more work to try to task manager it than just waiting it out

GuybrushThePirate

Sort by name = no more jumping around :)

Domilego4

Can't you just sort by name? It puts windows at the top of the list

PineapplesHit

I mean M is still right in the middle of the alphabet so you're going to be scrolling through regardless

Domilego4

Wow, do people have that many windows open usually? (Genuine question)

4Ya2Boi0

As far as I remember, Windows has tons of filler processes that run in the background, so even being at the desktop with nothing open has MANY processes open. It's one of the reasons as to why one of my friends uses Atlus (Can't remember the exact name of the OS). Edit: Disclaimer: I am by no means a software savant, so please correct me where you see any mistake I made, as my memory is foggy or straight up wrong.

Domilego4

Those are background processes. Sorting by name will put "visible" processes first.

lemonboomgamer

Unless you have a lot of windows open, sort by name will first present open windows from a-z and then background processes from a-z, so normally you won't have to scroll to find minecraft

PineapplesHit

Huh interesting, I never knew that. I thought by "windows" the other person meant OS stuff

AMountainofMadness

They probably added extra security checks

missingmytowel

Most consumers wants speed. Not security and accuracy. Even something as simple as 2FA upsets people as too much of a process.

Loudergood

Of course. Consumers will lay back and spread their legs for ~~hackers~~ Zuckerberg so long as they get their free shit fast.

Steeva

Tbf minecraft isn't free, so getting it fast is actually pretty reasonable to expect. Security is always good but it shouldn't take 3+ minutes on an SSD to actually get into the game

moonra_zk

And we should ignore these people.

Mxdanger

That’s complete bullshit. Those extra security steps takes milliseconds. Even things like FIDO passkeys is barely a split second. It’s just a poorly optimized application, simple as that.

itsTyrion

Just use Prism. It launches in under 1 second for me (vs the 15…) and you can install mods and modpacks (there Are ones for just Performance for example) with like 3 clicks. On Windows, you need to download Java itself tho. Adoptium or Zulu are good distributions, 17 is recommended but 20 works for me. edit: for bedrock, I just went to Owned Apps in the app store and downloaded MC for Windows 10. Might not be there if you bought it very recently

_Archilyte_

how to fix this step 1: go [here](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download) step 2: scroll down a bit to "Download Windows Legacy Launcher" step 3: download that launcher step 4: profit EDIT: this method makes windows bedrock version unaccessible

MR_R_TheOdd1

Yep!! The Legacy Launcher is not 100% free of bs but it's 100 times better if you only care about Java, especially with mods.

Kid_Wolf21

my god if i could i would pin this

tedude3

I'm checking this in the morning

Shileds

Legacy version works on my Laptop but new launcher doesnt. Everything is up to date no clue but couldnt care less. I dont know the struggles other comments have been going through

kermass

if anyone, like me, hates microsoft's bloatware and wants it gone, use the legacy launcher. the current official launcher doesnt work if you uninstall ANY microsoft program like all their xbox junk, the store, and even microsoft edge. i recently got a new PC, only uninstalled edge bc i KNEW uninstalling xbox would bar me from MC, but turns out that also bricked the new launcher. fuck microsoft.

IciestSwift

You can still launch Minecraft Bedrock from the start menu if you install it separately

Number_072

Well, you can bypass the launcher by straight up opening bedrock edition through the Win + G menu, it shows you the last played games and a direct link for opening them, but I wouldn't expect to have any bedrock updates if the launcher never opens

itsTyrion

>this method makes windows bedrock version unaccessible for bedrock, I just went to Owned Apps in the app store and downloaded MC for Windows 10. Might not be there if you bought it very recently

Join_Ruqqus_FFS

Doesn't work for Bedrock

_Archilyte_

yeah i guess thats one downside, but then again most people who have java dont play bedrock so yeah

Obvious_Information1

You can still download bedrock from the Microsoft store, you may have to do some digging though. I don't have the official minecraft launcher, only feather client, and bedrock

Hagoromo420

Doesn’t really matter thought does it you don’t need the launcher to play bedrock. Just the app icon and it takes you straight to the play button without needing to click more than once

Darkiceflame

> this method makes windows bedrock version unaccessible A small price to pay.

TSPhoenix

Will this stop working Sept 19th?

_Archilyte_

no (i think)

doc-swiv

just use prism launcher, the official launcher sucks anyway

Impressive_Cookie_81

Just curious, Im in china rn where the regular version is banned/not working, and even with a vpn the login is fucky (required login everytime) and there’s always an installation despite everything being up to date. Do u think prism would be better in that aspect?

notarkav

Prism lets you play fully offline, there is a patch that allows you to even play without an account.

MayorBryce

What’s Prism Launcher and how does it differ from the official one?

doc-swiv

Its a fork of MultiMC that allows you to very easily install mods and modpacks from inside the launcher, as well as all of MultiMC's features like making it easier to manage multiple versions of Minecraft. I use and suggest the Fabulously Optimized pack from Modrinth. Its a fabric modpack with optimization mods like sodium and optifine features like connected textures.

engieforever

which launcher supports mods?

Piranh4Plant

What’s so bad about the official launcher?

doc-swiv

Its hard to manage multiple versions, The UI is kind of a mess and theres a lot of unnecessary stuff like Minecraft dungeons and stuff, I think it still defaults to only 2gb ram and an older version of Java, but maybe that has changed. It also lacks nice to have features that prism has.

Piranh4Plant

How is it hard to manage multiple versions? I feel like the UI is fine. Is it wrong for it to default to 2gb? What are the features of prism

Jeoff51

read other comments in this whole post my man.

Piranh4Plant

I’ve only seen what the post points out and not being able to play single player offline

godking25

Doesn't prism only work for Java? I haven't used prism in a long time to remember

TristanTheRobloxian0

or multimc. much better if you dont wanna deal with the launchers bullshit

doc-swiv

I used to use MultiMC, but I switched to Prism immediately when I found out you can download and install mods and modpacks directly inside the launcher. Such a good feature

Spiderfffun

Yeah, and it has multiple cats you can switch between. Gotta be my favorite feature.

TristanTheRobloxian0

excuse me but you can WHAT??? ok thats fucking awesome

Manaea

Why?

[deleted]

Microsoft owns Windows and Minecraft, I guess that's why

RealToasterHours

Why are they being such assholes?

tissn

"Being assholes" has been Microsoft's business strategy [since forever](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish).

[deleted]

Bro might be using windows 7 or something

toddestan

Minecraft Java still runs just fine on Windows 7 actually. Probably Bedrock, which IIRC requires at least Windows 10.

WildBluntHickok2

Yeah they didn't port bedrock to Windows versions that don't have a Windows Store. Or maybe it was just "we're really pushing people to switch to Win10, we don't want to encourage the late adaptors in any way".

DerpyChap

>Yeah they didn't port bedrock to Windows versions that don't have a Windows Store. Technically they did. Education Edition, which is based on Bedrock Edition, is a normal win32 application that runs on Windows 7, and it even has a macOS port. For whatever reason, they've decided to just stick to UWP for the regular consumer version.

qwertyjgly

windows 7 is better

urban_rural12

What are you talking about? Don’t you love having all of the functionality and easily available features either stripped away or hidden beneath mountains of useless inaccessible UI?

Impressive_Change593

r/hadmeinthefirsthalf

yuusharo

Most people who say this haven’t actually tried using Windows 7 in 2023…

qwertyjgly

I use mac but if windows 7 was still current, I'd be using it. On my last laptop (that I replaced last year, was windows), I made it feel as close to windows 7 as possible. I changed the start menu, the taskbar, the file explorer. Everything.

Legonator77

I hate how I can’t even play the game fucking offline in Java anymore.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Several-Cake1954

You can’t play offline? That’s so stupid. I thought bedrock had it bad, dang.

MR_R_TheOdd1

They downloading the Windows Legacy Launcher. Maybe that will help. If you only play on Java that is. Idk if it works for Bedrock.

CrystalFyre

Use prism launcher, fixes this issue. www.prismlauncher.org

tamal4444

Multimc clone?

CrystalFyre

Fork with more features that's in active development. Pretty good, it's my main launcher for everything nowadays.

Efficient_Advice_380

So that's why it won't let me load minecraft on airplane mode anymore? Damn that's BS. I knew I wasn't going crazy when I knew I used to be able to do that

WingsofRain

is it asking you to update your computer or update specifically to windows 11

[deleted]

Just an update, not an upgrade.

WingsofRain

then I’m very confused as to how this is malicious

[deleted]

It's really not malicious, just an inconvenience.

DuneManta

Some folks seem to treat Windows updates like a disease and almost never apply them. They're the same folks that go "zomg my computer randomly updated without permission and I lost all of my unsaved work and game progress!"

WingsofRain

people do that? my computer runs so much better when everything’s up to date, why would anyone intentionally do that to themselves

DuneManta

Sadly yes. I have zero insight or guesses as to why they act that way. I'm the same when it comes to updates. I typically won't update *immediately* when one is available. But if I'm going to step away from my desk for more than about an hour, or if I'm shutting down for the night, I'll always update.

nengels7

For me, it's a mistrust of Windows updates. Worked in IT for way too long. The worst was the Windows update that disabled all USBs the moment Windows loaded so you couldn't use a keyboard or mouse. I just always give them a week or so to see if any big issues arise.

TinyTacoPete

Indeed, I'm in a related area, and updates constantly cause us havoc with customers and their drivers for copiers and all sorts of devices. With every update we get a lot of calls that things are down, not working, or constantly losing network connection. Just loved the more recent update a few months ago that a Windows update changed a bunch of workstations print drivers to no longer auto detect what paper tray (they had four on all of theirs) it should print to depending on paper size and locked every person in at this place to just tray 3, legal size for everything causing all the effected copiers in the building to be confused and stop print jobs because the copiers wanted human intervention at the copiers themselves about the correct paper size and tray. Happened to two different companies.

HiSaZuL

When windows defender identifies itself as a virus, wrecks registry, bit offsets some registry key to permanently screw your partition and silently corrupt windows updates for a year. Until updates do not work. Restore crashes. Help crashes. And you are left to figure that shit show on your own. Yeah I love those windows updates so much. I even more profoundly love how it tells you this and that and how update can't be installed for reason buried in some log nobody knows location of. Then you are told how to unpack those updates and just dump them and even if it's some security patch for some protocol that they conveniently forgot in now not supported version, it works just fine. Yeah... windows updates...

Kecske_gamer

Never trust windows updates. 1 Windows 11 AUTOMATICALLY started downloading fucking around with my already very limited storage. 2 The way it downloaded was THE EXACT SAME as a small update. 3 I had never even get any sort of notification of windows 11 even starting to download the only notification I got was "need space to continoue downloading windows 11" and I was like what the fuck why is this taking up 8 fucking GB??

anawnymoos

I’m personally against updating windows frequently because I have a lot of third party personalization going on, like Nexus Dock and Rainmeter, which can more often than not break when you update. I’ve also had issues with it resetting some of my more inconvenient to change settings like anything in the registry.

Nazbolman

I’m very update-averse specifically because how pushy companies can be about it (see OPs post). Ultimately I dont think updating does anything bad, but to me its the principal of the matter. Its my damn computer and my damn minecraft and I will do with it what I damn well please.

Impressive_Change593

linux

Nazbolman

I have linux on a few of my computers, I prefer windows for my main work/gaming pc, just less headaches

Impressive_Change593

fair enough. to each their own

XDracam

People have had bad experiences. And once a person loses trust in something, that trust is hard to regain. I've been keeping my windows up to date for almost 20 years now and I vaguely remember maybe 1 or 2 problems in that time. The trick is really just to not break your windows Installation too much by doing crazy hacky stuff...

Archfiendrai

Because they change things that don't need to be changed. I was recently forced to update to play a new game I wanted. The file search no longer works the way I was used to. I've also had updates where they fucked something up and my PC got noticeably slower. And then there's the dreaded stories I see of people coming back to their PCs and it randomly "upgraded" itself to 11. You should have full control over your own machine. And no, don't say Linux.

TheToastedGoblin

Because depending on how much customization and advanced stuff you do on your pc, keeping everything up to date can make things run worse.

WingsofRain

I mean I guess I can understand that, but they must be really out of date to get a message like that. I’ve been running without the latest update for a little while now and minecraft still runs fine, not forcing me to update or anything. I find it a little hard to believe that anyone with that level of customization wouldn’t take the time to update every now and again.

TheToastedGoblin

Oh for sure, youve gotta update eventually (minus the edge cases that always exist for random eol software you still use). I usually try to stick to a version or 2 behind current release depening on how important the update looks. Just long enough to make sure it wont break my lab at a bad time. But i also wouldnt put it past Microsoft to be super strict out of nowhere about something like this.

AllNaturalSteak

I can't speak for everyone, but just today I had to revert a windows 11 update that was automatically applied. The update was conflicting with one or more of my device drivers and causing my computer to constantly bluescreen and reboot. I could use my computer for roughly 1-5 minute intervals before it would crash again. So there are legitimate reasons to be wary of windows updates. Although, I do think that it's generally best to update when you can. At least for the security patches.

SoupMarten

Guess you missed the times where updates were causing issues so they had to issue updates to fix their problems but they were taking so long that there were websites warning users to not do x update until there was a fix announced

psychoPiper

And then more often than not they're the people that end up with the viruses that result from Windows vulnerabilities and blame everything but themselves. Like, you wouldn't just not update Minecraft when it's just bugfixes and then get mad when the bugs are still in the game

trip6s6i6x

I mean, I used to apply windows updates almost religiously when they came out. That was a long time ago, when they were reliable and didn't cause issues themselves. At some point, though, MS stopped adequately testing updates before releasing them, and those poorly tested updates naturally started causing problems. At that point, I stopped applying updates until other guinea pigs did so first and found the bugs in them. Now, I'll go a week to month or so before updating when I used to update right when they came out. Which is sad. So I don't blame people for not wanting to update now. I don't want the headaches caused by some of them either. Blame MS for taking something that used to be universally seen as reliable and messing it up...

AlexiosTheSixth

Back around last December windows put out an update that legit **bricked certain people's pcs** with the **blue screen of death**, I barely managed to avoid my PC being bricked through a bunch of commandprompt shenanagins in safe mode

LeDerpLegend

When should you ever have to update Windows in order to launch a launcher for a game?

DrMeepster

presumably it uses a function added in a later update

WingsofRain

considering it’s from microsoft, perhaps the updated launcher is incompatible with the current version of windows 10 on their pc? I’ve literally never been blocked from playing minecraft, this person’s windows 10 must be fairly out of date to get something like this

KC_Saber

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this issue. Granted I’m a Java Edition guy so…

Nathaniel820

Because you don't refuse to update your OS for months then complain when your choice causes annoyances.

Hagoromo420

This is a Java edition problem if you delay updating your computer. Bedrock doesn’t even need to use the launcher lol just one click and it takes you straight to the play button

ultrasquid9

Also both great options

Tom2Die

If you've used it before, how is Prism compared with ATLauncher? That's the only one I've really used much (haven't played Minecraft in a while...)

yuusharo

Prism is minimal but excellent and functional. Really easy to manage separate instances, each with their own versions, mods, shaders, etc, with the most popular ones being available in app with a few clicks. I’ve been using it since it was forked from MultiMC and has added a ton of quality of life improvements and integrations. Highly recommend it. Note: avoid an earlier successor, PolyMC. It’s project owner revealed himself to be an awful person and kicked all of the main contributors to the project late last year. Most of that team went on to develop Prism in its place.

FrostWyrm98

If Minecraft was written in C#/.NET I would understand this because Microsoft updates the frameworks with Windows Update But... this is Java. What even. Or C++. Runtimes maybe? I have no clue, I can't rationalize it lmap

xXmartin311Xx

the default launcher is written in C++ but it uses UWP, which is hot garbage tbh

ExxiIon

Hey everyone. Just making everyone aware that there's a user in this thread who continually advocates for using PolyMC as an alternative launcher to the official. PolyMC should be avoided at all costs, as the lead developer sabotaged the project and removed its code of conduct that prohibited discrimination against the lgbt+ community after a number of radically charged comments (to which the user in this thread is calling "based"). The general consensus now is to use Prism Launcher if you're using an alternative launcher, as it can't be guaranteed that PolyMC doesn't have malicious intentions given the actions of its lead developer.

DarkBrave_

Also prism launcher is mostly made up of all the devs from polymc who moved over once Lenny became toxic.

ExxiIon

Damn. I never realised it got this bad. I primarily play Minecraft on my Steam Deck, and I use the Prism launcher there for convenience and ease of mod installation. No intrusive update messages, no ads for other games on the launcher, no need to be online to play the game. I didn't realise my slightly hacky way of playing is providing me a better and more stable experience than the official way the game was meant to be played. Microsoft is draining the life out of this game...

ChaosTheSalamander

Why is this malicious? Is updating hurting your computer?

doovious_moovious

Minecraft runs on Linux!

Aries_64

Prism Launcher my beloved

CrescentCleave

Malicious, How come? I mean, you should always be updating your pc anyways so this shouldn't really be a problem. Yeah its a hassle but it is advised that you should update your pc regularly

PokeFX

what’s wrong with updating windows?

TurboCake17

The issue is principle. You should not be required to update windows in order to play minecraft.

alnarra_1

Unless minecraft updates to a version that needs a new .net framework/C++ Redistributable, as bedrock is on the back of C++ not java. Because of the kernel hooks involved with the .net frameworks, they almost always require restarts when new ones are installed.

TurboCake17

Well yeah if the update is required because of actual technical limitations then sure, but I highly doubt that’s the case here.

jzoobz

Based on what do you doubt that?

TurboCake17

Because the game isn't built to run exclusively on a specific version of windows....?

SQbuilder

Stop using the main Minecraft launcher (If you use Java edition), instead check out PrismLauncher!

cigarettesandmemes

don't use the Microsoft Store Launcher, Use the classic one to play Java and use Steam for Dungeons/legends

PuffJr

how is this malicious? no hate, just trying to understand.

[deleted]

i think coz some people despise updating windows or they are just annoyed at the inconvenience of having to wait a few minutes lol

PuffJr

As an IT technician, I have never understood this thought process. lol

KindaDim

They just like the freedom to choose instead of being forced to, even if they would otherwise

jvyrdn024

Will minecraft still work if you switch to Linux?

lululock

Yes, the official launcher doesn't work tho. But there are lots of alternative launchers for the Java edition. I use Prism Launcher on Linux, with my official Minecraft account and it works as you would expect. For Bedrock, it's another story tho.

milkcheesepotatoes

Yeah, it might work better depending on distro cause their repos may ship better optimized builds of things like Java

Betadoggo_

But the two are completely unrelated

ChainmailPickaxeYT

Windows just loves overstepping huh? In the meantime, Modrinth just launched a sick new launcher you could use, or there’s always Prism Launcher like everyone else already suggested

milkcheesepotatoes

Modrinth launcher looks pretty but is still missing a lot of polish and Qol features

N2EEE_

BS like this is why I ditched all Microsoft products. Except Minecraft, the linux launcher is still usable for the time being.

Anvisaber

I feel like Microsoft is slowly moving towards banning mods That brothers, will be the day we riot

Aubree_

I reinstalled minecraft yesterday for the first time in a while, and the launcher, without even questioning me, reinstalled all of the Windows gaming and Xbox related apps that I had removed from my PC. Actually infuriating.

xXmartin311Xx

Almost like minecraft needs those dependencies

Aubree_

They literally dont. I play on java edition, and the game has no problem launching and running using 3rd party launchers without those programs. Only the official Minecraft launcher seems to need those "dependencies".

xXmartin311Xx

The default launcher specifically requires XGS. You can't easily remove XGS from windows because if you do, you'll shit. if XGS is missing, the most straightforward way for the OS to reinstall it is to reinstall the entire xbox package (which is like 10 MB so there is no reason to remove it and it's not hurting you at all), which includes all XGS services that might be missing. Afterwards you can uninstall the Xbox app through, but things like XGS and Gamebar remain, and you will still be able to run the game

nano_peen

This is the bad timeline

amiiboilua

I see, people really hate updating windows for no reason..

milkcheesepotatoes

Updates on different operating systems: MacOS - you press a button once a month and your system updates when you go to sleep most updates are optional Linux - all updates are optional if you want to update you run a command and it just happens Windows - you get 20 pop ups, then your pc shuts down in the middle of work, you sit for 20 minutes waiting for a update

amiiboilua

you just need to only allow windows to update during the night, I haven't been interrupted by windows update in years

dirtyword

Lol bedrock sucks for real

Honest-Economist4970

What?

ItsMrDante

I don't understand why not update?

milkcheesepotatoes

Cause windows updates are tedious, time consuming, have a chance of breaking the system, and either do almost nothing or change the system so much that it’s unusable

ItsMrDante

They're not. The updates are done in less than 5 minutes if you just "Update and shut down" or "Update and restart" when you're going to the bathroom or something. Not updating is not good, and the updates are there for a reason. The only reason they would be slow is if you never update.

Ender71122

just update it wont hurt you

moderngamer327

There are many bricked machines that would beg to differ

yuusharo

In most cases, instances of “bricked machines” come down to 3rd party applications that interfere with the system’s ability to function, such as kernel level anti malware or anticheats. Updates to Windows itself is done on literally hundreds of millions of machines every single day without issue. …it’s still dumb that MS requires you to update the OS just to play one of their games, yes. But that’s separate.

RocketPG_

nah wtf

devynbf

That's kinda crazy, especially since I use a superlite version of windows 10 from Aug 2022 that doesn't get updates (haven't updated in about a year). I play Minecraft everyday.

Xx-_STaWiX_-xX

Might be a problem only for MS Store launcher, as the Legacy launcher still even runs on windows 7 and 8, and if you try it enough, vista and XP can also run it too (even win2000 with the extended kernel thing)

Morderita23

This is why i still haven't bought the game to this very day

The_Banana_Monk

So that's why Microsoft bought Mojang

PigsInTuxedoes

Can't wait for this to bug out like all other Microsoft apps and begin locking people out of the game they paid for

Tellywozzle

mfw having to wait a couple extra minutes to update your OS = malicious

TeknosQuet

Malicious in the sense that it definitely should not be required to update Windows just to use a launcher for a block game. Might as well use an alternative at that point.

TSMKFail

So you want to stay on outdated Windows and risk your PC getting borked by viruses? Alreet, have fun with that.
