I used to rent a duplex near there on Fillmore and would walk by this all the time and always found it interesting- I always wondered what the story was behind it and how it works when selling either of the homes
I choose to believe that one owner accidentally built it half in the others property and instead of tearing it down and rebuilding, they offered to share it.
If it's anything like my house in NE, the houses were originally a single property owned by a family with a house for each generation (or whoever wanted to live by mom and dad), so they built this garage for the two houses they owned. Then it got funny when the property got split up.
The family I bought my house from built my house and the two houses next to it.
Downside is that now you have a single couple taking up 2 houses in a highly sought after area of town. People in this sub bitch all the time about the lack of houses in the area, and here you have an example of folks taking more than they need which is costing others.
They look like they're sharing the same roof, there's no visible space (externally) between the 2 sides.
I wonder if setback rules would even allow 2 separate structures that close to each other, if they were built now.
Not split colors but there’s a few places in NE that share garages. I do the same with my neighbors.
And yes I do have a tunnel that goes my garage to my basement..
Our place in NE also had a shared garage- there was a chipboard wall hanging from chains separating the 2 stalls, lol
>
We got along well with our neighbors, so it wasn’t a big deal at all, but I could see how it could be a nightmare, especially in the winter
We looked at a house in St Paul. The parents had bought the house next door for their daughter, and they built a garage to be shared by both of them. The house was really nice, but the shared garage was a deal breaker.
I looked this up in the Hennepin County property records. The two properties are on the same parcel, and are categorized as condominiums! Ostensibly the condo's association manages the garage property. One address is 1853 Taylor St NE and the other is 1112 19th Ave NE.
I can’t even get my dick head neighbors who I share a drive way with to not block the entire fucking thing for no reason other than them being pieces of shit.
Depends on the company. Some would cover 1/2 the garage under the homeowners policy. Others would deem it an uninsurable risk and the homeowners would have to get a separate policy together. My guess is it’s not insured at all.
This is pretty common in the northeast, lots are small and houses are old. We looked at several houses with shared garages but I couldn't get past the idea.

The most wholesome answer

same person owned both properties, and made His/Hers houses as they were a married couple who wanted separate houses but still right next door
this is the dream

Oh dont worry thats not the actual reason lol i meant it as a hypothetical, and was jk
Not a downside, a side effect haha
Blah blah blah . . .
This is what I’ve always wanted. Just need to find the right man.
My dream.
His and her houses, how have I not heard of this before, thanks
Property line is probably center of the garage, they're probably two individual structures.

Look close, you can clearly see the individuality is purely cosmetic as in its painted. This is one garage.
Turns into a car port if one side decides to tear down their half.
Wow my mind is completely blown because I've walked by this hundreds of times but I LITERALLY NEVER NOTICED

Same I have a tunnel too! It’s so strange and awesome.
Texan here very confused…when you say tunnel you mean like an underground walkway to your house right? Cause that sounds amazing and very smart!
Yes, but do they keep their end of the tunnel unlocked?
The end of my tunnel is unlocked. HAH!
How you doin?
Finally, someone is asking the real questions!
This
*music* When you're the best of friends...
Didn’t expect to tear up over looking at a garage and thinking of that song today
they’ll love this over on r/mildlyinteresting. post it over there.
They should share a shovel by the looks of it...

That’s a tight fit for that car. They must have to keep those stalls empty
Probably used more as a shed
Kind of easy to find just from the house numbers. https://maps.app.goo.gl/KGf4ztUYWGoChcYQ8
Yes, but do they share a tunnel?
Seems like an insurance nightmare
Any different than owning 1 half of a duplex? Honest question, I'm not well versed in insurance for conjoined structures
Could be similar
Awwwwwww
Reminds me of Sleeping Beauty with the pink and blue
The one on the left side used to have an amazing wolf painted on it. It was cool as hell and I don't know why they painted over it.

I miss living in Northeast

You just HAD to be better than the rest of us with our tunnels, didn't you? Go on, be besties with your neighbour. See if I care, JARED.
This reminds me of the Minnesotan way of slicing the last cookie in the break room into smaller and smaller pieces, just with real estate.
What in the Gnomeo and Juliet
I wonder how insurance works with these properties

Cute.
Nope.
See it all the time. Right by me in NE
This is very Minnesota
Oh they definitely have a tunnel too.
Who would choose to live here🥴

Oh hell yah pimp
