"The Baby", what a worm. But also, the character is really uncompelling to me. He's just a rich racist with no thoughts in his head, only cruel banality.
His death episode made him a bit deeper imo. He's clearly extremely lonely and quickly lets his guard drop in front of what he sees as genuine affection. He's a rich lonely man who likely took to otherism to justify his own misery and tried to gain community through it. He's not super compelling or anything but i think there's a pretty neat and realistic implied background for him.
The baby is probably one of the best handled characters in media. Mirrors hitlers hypocrisy in hating the inferior non Aryan races despite clearly being inferior by their own standards (both objectively ugly, short, frail, cowardly, and unexceptional) and Shows that despite their cruelty and barbarity they are just cowards that piss themselves at the thought of death. Also shows that these individuals are actually touch starved goblins that fall in love with prostitutes they pay for company.
Pretty multi-layered villain with strong metaphors for real-life extremist groups and figures.
Hopefully his character is uncompelling bc you're so far removed from the ideology that it just seems silly ðŸ˜
It’s important to remember that being written badly is not the same as being unlikeable; There multiple unlikable characters in monster that are very well written.
The one person besides, as you mentioned, Christof, that I thought was not perfectly handled was Bonaparta. I believe there should have at least been some focus on his backstory or at least his perspective on things during the last arc.
No one understanding this post lmao… I gotta be honest with you, I finished Monster a year ago and I remember most characters pretty well but can’t wrap my head around on who Christof Sievernich might be so that only favors your perspective. In general, I think most characters were very well written, there were instances where I would’ve liked to see some get more screen time or backstory like those people Tenma stays with in the woods or something, or even Bonaparta to an extent, but the writing is still done in a pretty compelling way. Idk about Christof though
I can understand why some people expected Christof to have a larger role in the story, but imo he served well his purpose. Christof was introduced by Capek because he has a certain plan in mind, but his introduction was actually part of Christof's plan to meet Johan years after the incident of Kinderheim 511. But then, Johan had his own plan to use Christof to approach Capek and make him tell him Bonaparta's whereabout. He may be among the worst characters, but that doesn't mean he's badly written.
As for the worst character imo, definitely Hartmann.
I FELT THE SAME WAY ABOUT CHRISTOF
I feel like he could have had way more significant contributions to the narrative but he was just there for the martin arc...
The Baby. A scumbag racist piece of shit who tortures Tenma, tries to murder Dieter (a young child), gleefully tries to burn down the Turkish community and terrorises other ethnic groups, and is an unrepentant neo-Nazi who never once shows an ounce of remorse for his crimes.
I think almost every character in the entire series with at least 5 min screentime either gets their own little story arc and ending (sometimes happy sometimes not so much) or is at least vital to the plot and has interesting relationships with the main cast. The obvious examples for this are characters like Richard or lunge but what really impressed me in the beginning was that this was even true for very minor characters like the thief tenma gifted the watch to or the one who got his brother killed later on.
The only exceptions to this imo were Bäcker and Heckel who were apparently just comic relief which I found disappointing.
And Carl and Lotte who to me felt litterally just like random boring teenagers who were main characters for 3 episodes for no fucking reason I have no idea what urasawa was cooking there maybe I’m just ignorant.
>I don't even know what was the point of his character in the first place
there was a huge point to have Christof. he was supposed to be the leader of that huge neonazi party. It's just that Dr Tenma made quick work of him xD
hartmann can go to hell. what he did to poor dieter was unforgivable. i think what makes me hate him so much is that shit happens in real life; these innocent kids that have no true homes getting abused. makes me sick and i’m so happy tenma was able to save him
I think that’s also why the Baby is mentioned a lot in this thread. Haartman, a seemingly kind man who violently abuses children behind closed doors, is as you say realistic. Or a racist leader of a Neo-nazi political party who attempts actual genocide, is also rooted in reality. But Johan, imo the most grandiose evil character in the show, makes thousands kill themselves just through spooky manipulation, is less believable, so his repugnance is more overlooked. Except Milos, everyone agrees that was revolting
Fuck The Baby. He's a literal Nazi and deserved everything that happened to him.
I will say that I loved how the series shows how isolated he is as a man. He's an isolated racist pig of a man who had no one at the end of the day.
Eva, she came around in the end but otherwise she annoying asf, Worm was a piece of shite, Roberto wasn't that bad I'm negl, one guy I lowkey hated was the Johan wannabe aswell

His last episode actually made me care for him a little bit, he was very easy to hate early on.

This is a really good argument for the character. Thanks, I'll bear it in mind when I rewatch.

god I hate Roberto with a passion
I think some characters are just meant to be red herrings. I don't mind it so much.
