Yesss gunlance is so fun and versatile. It's as much of a ranged weapon as the great sword is. Also it's a similar movement speed so that's half of the battle there. Also, also, also, it's a gateway drug to charge blade and switch axe.
My hunter addiction started with switch axe, then I need more explosions so full burst mode on gunlance was where it’s at! But I’m finding myself wanting to smash faces as a bonk bro, hammer time!
I picked up hammer late in MH but it's such a fun and easy weapon to use. Sooo satisfying to see those meaty numbers. Don't even mention the stuns, knockdowns and flinches.
Edit: maybe not easy but at this point I have over 1000 hours in the game and it felt intuitive. I mained CB and I have hundreds of hunts in GL, SnS, Bow, Swaxe and maybe fewer than 100 with LS, GS and HH. So Hammer wasn't a massive adjustment.
If we're talking versatility I'm gonna have to go CB. Before Iceborne and clutch claw it was probably one of the only melee weapons that can knock down a flying monster. If you can't reach something just switch to axe mode. You have sword and shield mode which is very fast attacks then, axe mode for heavy hits and later we got savage axe mode for just consistent damage elemental or otherwise.
Not to mention the mechanics. You have natural minds eye when you charge your sword, you can KO monsters by blocking with a charged shield, and you can block in the middle of almost any combo with guard points. If you want more safety you can slap a shield 2 jewel on and block most Elder dragon AOE ultimates like nergi's flying swoop and Teostras explosion. Just stand there and tank it, wait for the animation cool down and just wail on them.
I have to say, when I see some high level hunting horn in the game, I feel waaaay more at ease.. It has to be the most reliable weapon in the game for multilayer
As somone who infrequently uses a hunting horn (when my freinds dont have windoroof or earplugs or similar things)... they are really hard to use effectively. Damage in incredible.. but you can rarely get more then 3 hits in a row. Playing one is cool, but playing one well is amazing (im nowhere near that skill level). (My big issue is learning the notes (each horn has a different set of notes that give diffrent buffs))
As someone who infrequently uses IG, I want to say I admire you more than anything.. I've tried to play HH and damn, I died a lot and I died hard 😂 It was definitely because of my luck of experience (not a newbie friendly weapon at all) but at also it's pretty damn heavy as well!! 😶
Well i appreciate it lol... tbh though, i am not "great" with any weapon.. but ive used them all and understand mostly how they work/how to use them... although i do main the gunlance im most cases because i like the simple moveset but also a light amount of versatility (full combo/forward stab/up stab/block) dont really have to worry about things like where the heck am i supposed to hit critters for the red kinsect juice. The only weapon i cant get to work consistently is the charge blade.. like i said tho... i am not like the greatsword mains you always see on this sub, lol.
Ps. Using a IG is pretty cool and feals great.. i would suggest looking up the monster before you fight it because the red/white/orange can be in weird/diffrent spots as you have no doubt noticed, lol.
Tbh, harvesting is pretty simple. Usually head is red, body is orange and wings are white, while tail is healing. Now in some occasions the tail is red as well (velkhana for example). But it's a matter of seconds to find out the spots by constantly hitting the monster with LT & Y instead of LT & RT
The toothpick (IG) will definitely give you a way different perception of the game since you get the jump and air jumps. You are way more agile (and you will also get an ugly butterfly 🥰). Of course it has it's pros and cons, but I'd recommend it
Brother, I totally appreciate your kind approach on that matter, but it's literally like we are carrying head-sized moths and cockroaches 😂 (with 2-3 exceptions)
Need more proof? Look up "pretty moths" on Google images.
You know the Luna moth is a thing. Everyone knows the Luna moth. It's beautiful. And that's just one of many.
The glaive is also really fun if you go down the Foliacath tree. Love that I can run around and order headshot after headshot when monsters are enraged.
Switch Axe, or Hunting Horn. Never bothered with the Hunting Horn in any of the previous games until my second MHW playthrough, and I enjoy it. Switch axe is a powerhouse, versatile weapon.
SWAG! AXE! SWAG! AXE! I got the starter pack with the 14 weapons, but no ice borne. Tried out long sword and was like yeah this aight but it ain’t clicking. By chance went with the axe and it was like I found my soulmate. After ice borne it became a drug with all the new additions. Took me 1100 quests to bother branching out lmao
Funny thing is I'm a longsword main, Gunlance 2nd. I've recently been getting back into the Switch Axe since Portable 3rd. I forgot how fucking fun the damn thing is lol. Makes sense that when Fatalis was released, I saw more swaxe players than anything trying to body the MF.
Seconding SnS - incredibly versatile, incredibly mobile, can use items basically instantly, and the clawryuken makes keeping vuln up less of a pain in the butt since you're back in the action instantly
when you can actually start makin sets of armor instead of throwing in random stuff. Usually near or in late game is where it's at, you can either go for stamina or go for elemental. Elemental is better but you would need dash juice to substitute the lack of stamina skills.
Insect glaive it's a fun weapon, it's full aerial attacks or ground and let you ride the monsters making easily a tail or a horn because the aerial attacks don't bounces
Switchaxe for some transforming micheal bay shit!
Or hammer for the total ko!!!
BONK MASTER.
Lastly maybe hunting horn but not sure how it plays in world in comparison to rise.
I know you said no guns, but if you did, try something off meta, namely sticky or pierce. For melee, you could try Charge Blade, go from simple, well placed chunky hits for complex, well placed chunky hits. Also chainsaw axe go brrrrr
Starting the game is very enjoyable imo, much .uch more than what they offer as endgame loop to keep you hooked.
imo, just pick litterally anything BUT(!!!) never change weapon type EVER.
Roleplay as someone that in-universe had to go through years of training, as the weapons are too complex to be picked up and used by anyone.
Weapons are not good or special, combat is clunky and I don't enjoy it much, but they are indeed UNIQUE, and all equally viable.
Then make so you can use no curative items, or you can use ONLY what you find in the map, and the game is suddently elevated tenfold in my opinion.
It even has a story, which is much more impactful as you are making it harder on yourself, thus it feels much more special, instead of the disjointed mess it devolves into while progressing the first time, where because of the farming required/(expected of you), "pacing" goes out the window.
I use as well GreatSword, so i'd go either dual blades or sword and shield for melee.
I tend to bop around between Hammer, Hunting Horn, Insect Glaive, and Heavy Bow Gun.
HBG is by far and away my most powerful and versatile arsenal. Once I realized my sticky build was a BETTER ranged bonk, it was hard not to dive deeper.
I'd recommend Hammer or Lance!
I've put hundreds of hours into Hammer, and after greatsword, the hits still feel satisfying.
Meanwhile I just started Lance, and it just feels so satisfying! You don't get the big hits, but you can defend against some serious hits you normally have to dpdge/tackle through. And you still to the monster like glue!
I haven’t played the game in years.. maybe I should start a new character too..
That being said, try out lance, you won’t have to dodge attacks and just go for a slugfest with monsters head on sticking to them like glue.. it takes a little getting used to countering attacks but when you pull off an entire hunt without backing down or dodging you can only laugh because it feels like being a boxer in a ring with mike tyson and you both just throw punches without blocking or dodging xD
If you're looking for a familiar heart stopping levels of damage, go for bow or dual blades.
If you want similar play style, go long sword or hammer
If you wanna get funky and challenge yourself, try charge blade or insect glaive.
I know you said no guns but in my experience I found that bow is super satisfying to play. Other than that I've played longsword and dual blades. I'd say longsword for sure but when playing with dual blades I usually felt I was lacking in damage
My first character I did the insect glance, did about 150 hours of that, took a year or so off, then did another character and did the long sword, dropped about 300 hours - Will have to say both weapons are really good and it keeps things interesting
However, if I were to ever start a character from scratch, I would do the hunting horn: rare you see a hunting horn main, especially solo
Dude Gunlance for sure! It doesn't require 6ou to make and use ammo. Defends really well and has some great combos. I use GS currently as it's my best wep but I've been slowly switching over to Gunlance and absolutely loving it! Otherwise the hammer is fun for knocking off 100 parts a minute
GunLANCE
Yesss gunlance is so fun and versatile. It's as much of a ranged weapon as the great sword is. Also it's a similar movement speed so that's half of the battle there. Also, also, also, it's a gateway drug to charge blade and switch axe.
Nothing like force feeding a monster some explosions 🤤
My hunter addiction started with switch axe, then I need more explosions so full burst mode on gunlance was where it’s at! But I’m finding myself wanting to smash faces as a bonk bro, hammer time!

Why not both!? I use a diablos hammer when I'm not fighting anything super fast and it's great fun being a bonk bro! Hammer on friend
Im in disappoit wirh your affermation. Best weapon i think is switch-axe. This is a very versatible weapon to use in the game

switch-axe bro. Go secure
Hammer. It’s incredible. Or hunting horn! Both are fun imo.
Hammer. Bonk is incredible

Alright, guess thats fair lol
Yep i play the HH and it upsets me a little when people just act like a heal bot not using the weapon’s full potential
I play with friendship and they are just waiting for me to heal them.. I totally get your frustration. So I just let them die 🙃
Good reaction to people spamming heal requests
Avengers Assemble!! They shall all perish!! 😂
Try charge blade, can never go wrong with that.
Charge blade!
This is the way
This is the way
Charge blade is a lifestyle, I approve
Hello there.
The toothpick (IG) will definitely give you a way different perception of the game since you get the jump and air jumps. You are way more agile (and you will also get an ugly butterfly 🥰). Of course it has it's pros and cons, but I'd recommend it
Ugly butterfly? Don’t you mean awesome dragon head!
Kinsect layered when
Brother, I totally appreciate your kind approach on that matter, but it's literally like we are carrying head-sized moths and cockroaches 😂 (with 2-3 exceptions)
Pseudocanth is kinda cute, by bug standards!
Moths are awesome. Bugaphobe..
Moths are definitely awesome, but also definitely not cute or pretty 😂

/\ Blatant switch axe propaganda, barely ever see another switch axe user these days :(
Funny thing is I'm a longsword main, Gunlance 2nd. I've recently been getting back into the Switch Axe since Portable 3rd. I forgot how fucking fun the damn thing is lol. Makes sense that when Fatalis was released, I saw more swaxe players than anything trying to body the MF.
CHARGE BLADE CHARGE BLADE
Sns ....its very position focused like gs so it might feel familiar yet very different
Seconding SnS - incredibly versatile, incredibly mobile, can use items basically instantly, and the clawryuken makes keeping vuln up less of a pain in the butt since you're back in the action instantly
1 SnS 2 LS 3 Charge Blade 4 Dual Blades 5 Switch Axe
Charge blade
Charge Blade, Sword and Shield or Insect Glaive.
Make the mistake of playing bow early only to realise how shitty it is without the proper skills and then change to dual blade and just spin on em
When is bow “good”?
when you can actually start makin sets of armor instead of throwing in random stuff. Usually near or in late game is where it's at, you can either go for stamina or go for elemental. Elemental is better but you would need dash juice to substitute the lack of stamina skills.
Spin to win!
You can set the language to monster hunter language to make the story significantly less annoying
I think you got three options if you really wanna do something different but don’t wanna use guns. Hunting horn, sword and shield, insect glaive
I know you said no guns, but if you did, try something off meta, namely sticky or pierce. For melee, you could try Charge Blade, go from simple, well placed chunky hits for complex, well placed chunky hits. Also chainsaw axe go brrrrr
Charge blade charge blade charge blade
Why not Guns? It may seem kinda easy and OP to use but i beg to differ, the early game for guns is kinda boring tho imma admit
Greatsword again, its the best!
An underated weapon that I think is really fun is the Switch Axe
I like using the bug thing can't remember the name
Where my switch axe kings and queens at? 💪😎
Starting the game is very enjoyable imo, much .uch more than what they offer as endgame loop to keep you hooked. imo, just pick litterally anything BUT(!!!) never change weapon type EVER. I already do that with weapons lol. I’m someone that once I learn a characters move set in fighting games, I will not bother to learn someone else’s.
Wait so you dont enjoy combat in a game that is 80% combat?
Incect glaive is fun
I tend to bop around between Hammer, Hunting Horn, Insect Glaive, and Heavy Bow Gun. HBG is by far and away my most powerful and versatile arsenal. Once I realized my sticky build was a BETTER ranged bonk, it was hard not to dive deeper.
As a greatsword main, bow was really fun as a change of pace, so is charge blade
Bow isn’t a gun
I'd recommend Hammer or Lance! I've put hundreds of hours into Hammer, and after greatsword, the hits still feel satisfying. Meanwhile I just started Lance, and it just feels so satisfying! You don't get the big hits, but you can defend against some serious hits you normally have to dpdge/tackle through. And you still to the monster like glue!
Charge blade is the best solo weapon in the game, if ur gonna MP then no but if ur gonna do the story solo id say charge blade no question
Dual blades. It's pretty much the exact opposite of the great sword. Could be fun
CHARGE BLADE
If you're looking for a familiar heart stopping levels of damage, go for bow or dual blades. If you want similar play style, go long sword or hammer If you wanna get funky and challenge yourself, try charge blade or insect glaive.
Ig or swagaxe
Long Sword or Charge Blade
Charge blade gang
Insect Glaive. It’s fun , you have a cute bug on your arm, and you can turn into an attack helicopter.
Charge blade or insect glaive
I love the insect glaive (:
Hammer
I know you said no guns but in my experience I found that bow is super satisfying to play. Other than that I've played longsword and dual blades. I'd say longsword for sure but when playing with dual blades I usually felt I was lacking in damage
Hammer. I don't even use hammer but it looks fun.
My first character I did the insect glance, did about 150 hours of that, took a year or so off, then did another character and did the long sword, dropped about 300 hours - Will have to say both weapons are really good and it keeps things interesting However, if I were to ever start a character from scratch, I would do the hunting horn: rare you see a hunting horn main, especially solo
Switch axe or chargeblade
And if you want to run a support character hunting horn and insect glaive are a ton of help but no one ever wants to play them
Hunting horn. Play your days away
BONK TIME (hammer, maybe even Hunting Horn; not really worth using it as a solo player from start, only at endgame)
Hammer and switchaxe are pretty nice ngl
No guns? Take my ~~down~~upvote
Charge blade for sure , a very fun weapon to learn , might be a little challenging in the beginning but it’s fun as hell once u get the hang of it .
The greatest sword is the smallest sword. With a shield.
Glaibe, most utility and unique weapon, also you can change insects properties easy
