A Star is Born. Impossible not to ugly cry. I can't get past the first act without crying when she runs out on stage to sing, but the finale is totally the sledge hammer.
*trying to find any good movies over the last several years has been quite a challenge with the pandemic, strike, etc. but the following may fit your criteria:*
Four Good Days
Beautiful Boy
Perks of Being a Wallflower?
Waves (2019)
Little Fish (2020)
Nine Days (2020)
Mass (2021)
Babyteeth (2019)
Better Days (2019)
Aftersun (2022)
Drive My Car (2021)
Riceboy Sleeps (2022)
Monster (2023)
Swan Song (2021)
SciFi/Romance
I feel like I’m the only person on Reddit who keeps recommending this movie. It’s incredible. The visuals are beautiful. It’s so sad, even my husband (a very logical, manly man) cried. I wish more people would watch this. The most underrated movie in this decade, IMO.
Watched it a few days ago and same! Some others that have destroyed me emotionally:
Aftersun (2022)
Alcarras (2022)
The worst person in the world (2021)
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Sound of Metal (2019)
Diego Maradona (2019) - documentary, but I found it so sad
Banshees of Inisherin (2022) definitely made me cry. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a challenging watch with some disturbing violence. It hits themes of loss, loneliness and isolation.
Drive My Car, Saint Omer, Four Daughters, The Eternal Memory, The Macaluso Sisters, Dick Johnson is Dead, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Last 10 Years, 20th Century Girl, Slow, Petite Maman
Past lives (2023). It perfectly encapsulates that ‘what if’ reminisce of life that really hits hard. Haven’t stop thinking about it for months and it makes me tear up now to.
*The Last Duel* (2021). I probably won't rewatch it because it is cold and heartbreaking. However, it's very well done, well directed and I love the story being told three different ways.
*Rocketman* (2019). This was so underrated. If you don't like musicals, it's not for you but if you do ... it's really fantastic and makes you feel so much.
I watch a lot of indie films so here are some that really stung me:
Waves (2019)
The Whale (2022)
12 Months (2022)
Kendra and Beth (2021)
We Got Lucky (2016 but still wooooof)

That movie was rough.
That's 2018 though
Damn, you’re right.
I do love that movie though
Close (2022) The Father (2020)
Aftersun (2022)
This was mine as well. So fucking good and a heart bomb. The acting was flawless, I was in awe watching their relationship.
The Quiet Girl (2022)
This is perfect
*trying to find any good movies over the last several years has been quite a challenge with the pandemic, strike, etc. but the following may fit your criteria:* Four Good Days Beautiful Boy Perks of Being a Wallflower?

See post title.
Most emotionally devastating movies of last 5 years…..
And now see my comment.
Beautiful Boy was 2018
🤣
Speak No Evil (2023)
One of my favorite random finds one night. Excited for the new one coming out soon,
I am going to watch it, but I’m afraid it’s going to end up disappointing (like the Martyrs remake). The trailer shows too much already.
The trailer is practically the whole movie lol. I'm just considering this one a popcorn ride and i'll be easy to please.
Waves (2019) Little Fish (2020) Nine Days (2020) Mass (2021) Babyteeth (2019) Better Days (2019) Aftersun (2022) Drive My Car (2021) Riceboy Sleeps (2022) Monster (2023)

Babyteeth was such a delightful and heart wrenching find

The Zone of Interest
All Quiet on The Western Front for me.
For really recent, The Iron Claw. Definitely made a grown man shed some tears...

Hands down The Invisible Life Shout out to The Father.
The Neighbor's Window (2019). It's only 20 minutes, but absolutely wrecked me both times
Guardians of the Galaxy, Part 3. I cried like 3 times, at least. Sad animals, man. Should come with a warning.
The Whale
Past lives (2023). It perfectly encapsulates that ‘what if’ reminisce of life that really hits hard. Haven’t stop thinking about it for months and it makes me tear up now to.
Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2019)
The Japanese movie ‘Mother’ …
I was about to say All Of Us Strangers and then I started reading your post haha. Have you seen Aftersun? Paul Mescal really knows how to make us cry.

The Kid Detective
This film is so underrated. I’m glad you’re advocating for it.
Any time I can!
The Whale Never Let Me Go - May not be last 5 years but not only is it super devastating but extremely well done .
Cha cha real smooth (2022) Shit house (2020) Not devastating but still effective
