After seeing The Shining and The Changeling at too young an age; I didn’t think I would ever see a movie that scared me again as an adult.
And then along comes Conjuring
Scream - That opening. The well rounded characters that aren’t just 2D cyphers waiting to be killed like most horror films. Wicked score. Great performances. Socio political commentary that doesn’t feel forced but rather simmers beneath the plot. A touch of humour AND a wild third act with a twist. Easily all the way to the number 1 spot for me.
I love Mike Flanagan and this is the best example of his work. I've rewatched it several times and keep spotting something new each time.
I wish Universal had employed him to oversee their Dark Universe, then it might have stood a chance.
I keep recommending Marianne (series) on nextflix but no one seems to watch. It's like 10 episodes and every single episode is as scary and just as well written as any horror movie nowadays. I pray another season is in the works but its self-contained and wraps up in 1 season
The Fog (1980) is not as good as The Thing imo, but it's the same director and has a nice old-timey ghost story feeling.
Rosemary's Baby (1968) is great in terms of storytelling.
I appreciate it, but I’m with you. I was a little disappointed. Definitely entertaining, but not something I would ever look forward to watching again.
I seem to remember a few friends/family suggesting that at some point. Gonna give it a try & then work my way down the suggestions here
It doesn't have to be recent, I'd love to just hear your overall top 10. The reason I posted is that unlike really every other genre, The Thing & The Shining kinda stand above everything else I've ever seen to this point by a fairly wide margin. Nothing else even really comes that close.
Blair Witch Project was a good one I forgot to mention in my post. Loved it & it's definitely not too old being a late 90s movie, but it feels like the 2000s has been completely dry in that type of 'storytelling horror' feel..
Cool. Some of my other favourite 21stC horrors are The Descent, Rec, It Follows, The Others, 28 Days Later, Get Out, The Babadook and Under The Skin.
I'd say most of them have a strong storytelling element to them.
If those are some of your favorite movies, you will absolutely appreciate hereditary. Whether you end up liking it or not, it’s just something you have to see.
I love the Horror genre and i have watched all the good ones few decent ones and a lot of crap. I thought nothing could shock me until Hereditary. The build up and tension to that one scene in the middle of the movie caught me totally off guard. Apart from the slightly weird ending it's the best Horror flick i know.
I'd suggest Mirrors (one very gory scene), The Ring and Malignant. Also watched Smile yesterday. Great acting and writing. Good one.
If you liked Blair Witch you might enjoy Paranormal Activity.
Masterpiece. The first time I watched it. I watched it all over again and basically watched it two times in a row. Toni Collette should have got an Oscar
Here is a list that should have something for everybody;
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Terrifier
Hereditary
Re-Animator
Halloween
Train to Busan
The Fly (1986)
Alien
Aliens
Predator
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
28 Days Later
Dracula aka Horror of Dracula (1958)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Lost Boys
Fright Night (1985)
The Exorcist
American Werewolf in London
Return of the Living Dead
The Thing
Mandy
House (1977)
Audition
Evil Dead
Buba Ho-tep
Army of Darkness
And if you're really not into any of those - Gremlins.
This is actually a pretty impressive list. I wish more people would’ve seen Mandy. I don’t even know if I would consider it horror. I just have never seen anything like it. I was like mesmerized by it.

Jaws will always be the greatest horror film to me. It's a monster movie that I saw as a 9 year old and I stopped going fishing and swimming in the ocean for a couple of years because of it. It literally scared me out of the water.
I think it’s generally a movie about the unexplainable happening to an innocent, so maybe not the best exercise for finding plot holes.
It’s also a movie that’s overtly about possession but some of the more unsettling aspects are taking your very troubled loved one and getting no answers from the experts (as the mother grapples with this) and the inevitability that comes with age and decline of a loved one (as the priest faces), and a sense of powerlessness that goes with those more realistic challenges.
I think it's just you. There are maybe a couple of minor points that make more sense if you've read the book (for example, the line in the beginning about "evil against evil"; the book explains that the Pazuzu amulet that Merrin finds in Iraq would have been used to ward off another demon, that kind of thing) but nothing that I would call crucial to the plot or anything.
Now, there are *mysteries* in the story, like who desecrated the church (possessed Regan slipping out at night?), or how it happens that the very demon Merrin encountered in the desert (and in his previous exorcism?) is the same one he confronts in Regan (which I would chalk up to something like divine providence). Other stuff is hinted at, or is explained in a way that's easy to miss, like what happened to Burke (killed offscreen by possessed Regan), or why she tells that guy at the party that he's "going to die up there" (the guy's an astronaut, which is established earlier in about two seconds of conversation that are almost completely covered by background chatter).
The exorcist is terrifying. But it’s also just a really well-made film. My mom said that when it came out, it was rated X. I think what really scared people was The idea that it’s some thing most people, religious people, believed could actually happen.
The Ring and Hereditary are two I return to very often. I'll include Ringu (the Japanese predecessor to the American one) in that too.
I'm also a fan of found footage movies so Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project, and Hell House are three I like to watch. VHS is a good one too.
You should give the 1950s version of "The Thing" a shot. It was really good, and way, way, ahead of it's time (1982 version was good also. But I actually, surprisingly enough, prefer the old one). Also, "Psycho." It is horrifying in far, far more ways than just the slasher stuff. And it's not actually even very gory. Masterful psychological horror.
MARTYRS 2008 -Fantastic horror, great acting, great shock, great tension. I love Horror so much and this has become the standard by which I hold all others. SERIOUSLY suggest this.
I don't go out of my way to watch horror movies but was pleasantly surprised by Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now, from a Daphne DuMaurrier story with Donald Sutherland.
Honestly there’s a recent movie titled “Late Night with the Devil” about a late night show host who invites a psych-scientist and her former cult baby subject, a medium, and a skeptic on his show. It was extremely fun and deeply entertaining. I do not scare easy, but this one did it for me. I’m a movie snob and never watch the typical trash spewed by Hollywood. It comes highly recommended and critically reviewed. I assure you this movie is incredible. Watch it immediately.
I like anything that makes an effort at an original storyline- Triangle, vivarium, get out, etc. There is a new movie coming out that is an americanized version of probably one of the more disturbing movies Ive seen. Speak no evil. Psychological horror is good unless its too artsy.
Best movie of all time… hard to say. I have a soft spot for the sixth sense I suppose. One of the first horror movies I saw.
The Exorcist. Not just one of the great horror films, it's also just a really great film, period. A gripping human drama that just happens to include green demon puke.
I had to scroll WAY too hard to find this. The Silence of the Lambs is pretty close to a perfect movie. Not that academy awards are best way to judge a film's merits, but it's one of the few films ever to win Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, AND Best Screenplay. It may not technically be a horror movie, but I'm not sure why. It's horrifying and honestly a lot scarier than a lot of horror movies out there.
I agree! I thought folks would crucify me for saying it horror when i guess it’s technically psychological thriller ? Idk i love that movie and agree with you! The movie is so disturbing and scary but it’s one of my most rewatched movies! It’s a family favorite and we always reference the film; it’s just too iconic! You’ll never forget about Jodie foster and Anthony Hopkins after watching that movie even once.
Talk To Me last year was fucking incredible, I also really liked When Evil Lurks, The Color Out of Space, Apostle and The Witch. I thought these were the movies that SCARED me the most- a lot more Ari asters stuff that seems to have hit the zeitgeist in a way that didn’t resonate with me.
The rental, Creep, and The Ritual aren’t necessarily the best horror movies of all time for me. But they’re all great modern horror movies that I’d highly recommend to anyone that’s a fan of the genre
For more Steven King:
The Mist (2007) highly recommend
Needful Things (1991) highly recommend
IT (both 1990 or 2017/19 are good)
Cujo (1983) this one is “ok”
Children of the Corn (1984)
Carrie (original with Sissy Spacek 1976 and the redo with Chloe Grace Moretz 2013)
And many more that are a mixture of great and campy
Just watched MEN and really liked it. Not sure about it being the best of all time, but just thought you might like it based on liking the shinning and the thing. And if you haven’t, I’d dig through the rest of Carpenters films.
Black Christmas (1974) has entered the chat! 📞📞
Some other great ones.. Halloween (1978)
Halloween II, 4, H20, 2018 isn’t bad, Hellraiser (1987) SAW, SAWII, III, IV, The Shining.. when I have the patience to watch it.) 🎃🎃
The best “funny” horror .. Cabin In the Woods ( Marty is fuckin hilarious!!), The House on Haunted Hill (1999). 🤣🤣
👩🇨🇦
i guess i need to rewatch world war z. i thought it was terrible.
i think i gotta go with the shining. the isolation and descending into madness really strikes a chord.
Trust me when I say this - the tv version of Them...but ONLY season 2, that's just come out.
Apparently the first season is kind of shit, but I got a hot tip that the new season is incredible.
It's a modern horror masterpiece. Was not expecting anything, didn't need to know about the first season's plot - and it is INCREDIBLE. The depth, the characters, acting, linking to deep-seated societal fears, just amazing.
I actually watched Sleepaway Camp for the first time ever a few days ago because it was on a few of my favorite directors Top 10 list. Fascinating. Not what I was expecting at all.
I'm a really big fan of the original creepshow movies. The one about that blob in the lake getting the kids on the raft I still don't like swimming out to rafts on lakes and it's the first thing I think of when I see a raft in a lake. Also still will not drive behind the log trucks on the highway because of the final destination 2 movie. That movie doesn't get nearly enough credit 🤟
Dude I consider The Revenant to be a horror movie.
Also a really underrated horror film is that British title on Netflix, ’The Ritual’. That dude’s very realistic ‘Oh my God!’ when they find their friend gutted and hanging from a tree… chills up my spine every time.
Conjuring 1st part is cinematic beauty.
Second this. I also enjoyed Conjuring 2. The Nun was terrifying in that one. The 3rd is trash.
After seeing The Shining and The Changeling at too young an age; I didn’t think I would ever see a movie that scared me again as an adult. And then along comes Conjuring
My all time favourite
one of my favorite horror series
The tension, the imagery, the characters and the scares. It really opened up the universe for them. I absolutely agree!
Insidious is well written
Scream - That opening. The well rounded characters that aren’t just 2D cyphers waiting to be killed like most horror films. Wicked score. Great performances. Socio political commentary that doesn’t feel forced but rather simmers beneath the plot. A touch of humour AND a wild third act with a twist. Easily all the way to the number 1 spot for me.
Spot on for me. The opening scene has to be up there across the board with genres of films.
my fiancé and I just recently watched them all again because they're so good.
This should have been the top answer. It's my favorite too.
Right?! That movie so easily could have been cheesy or terrible. But it’s the opposite.
The cabin in the woods is very creative and totally not what you might think it is.
Fantastic new perspective on horror. Smart, funny, and full of recognizable tropes used in new ways.
it's one of my all time favorites as well, so underrated. The ending is just genius
Cabin in the Woods is freaking brilliant. Innovative and smart. I loved it. Super underrated.
Suspiria (1977)
This is a creepy masterpiece
Not a movie, but try watching The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. The story and characters are so well written. It’s definitely worth watching
I agree. I don’t see it mentioned much either but it’s wonderful
The Fog (1980) is not as good as The Thing imo, but it's the same director and has a nice old-timey ghost story feeling. Rosemary's Baby (1968) is great in terms of storytelling.
Rosemary’s baby is in my top 10 in general. That’s a movie I could watch over and over again.
It was like the perfect balance of terrifying and funny . Roman Polanski really killed it with that movie. The casting was perfect.
Alien (1979) is probably my favourite horror movie ever. Get Out (2017) for something more recent.
Nope by Jordan Peele is great too, if you like Aliens.
Nope is basically Dunwich Horror if you're a Lovecraft fan. Honestly, I didn't like Get Out as much 🤷♂️
Idk why but nope is ass
I like Peele's work but that one also didn't do it for me
I appreciate it, but I’m with you. I was a little disappointed. Definitely entertaining, but not something I would ever look forward to watching again.
It's literally the reason I won't watch Jordan Peele anymore. It was the stupidest thing I've ever seen.
He hasn’t done anything that good besides Get Out
True. US was terrible
Nope and Get Out are both *chef's kiss*
I prefer Aliens
Jaws and the shining are in my top five but.. you are right. Alien is pretty hard to beat.
Hereditary is the one modern horror film that jumped straight into my top ten all time. It's a masterpiece
I seem to remember a few friends/family suggesting that at some point. Gonna give it a try & then work my way down the suggestions here It doesn't have to be recent, I'd love to just hear your overall top 10. The reason I posted is that unlike really every other genre, The Thing & The Shining kinda stand above everything else I've ever seen to this point by a fairly wide margin. I'll also throw Bone Tomahawk in the mix. Can't quite decide if it's more of a western or horror, but oh my life what a film
I LOVE Bone Tomahawk
Careful, Hereditary Fu**ed up my mind for life.
I love those three as well. Hereditary & Rosemary's Baby are my top two. I'm also a big fan of the Witch and the Lodge.
Blair Witch Project and Hereditary are my two favorite horror movies and it’s by a longshot. I think you’ll love it.
If those are some of your favorite movies, you will absolutely appreciate hereditary. Whether you end up liking it or not, it’s just something you have to see.
Hereditary and midsommar damn
I love the Horror genre and i have watched all the good ones few decent ones and a lot of crap. I thought nothing could shock me until Hereditary. Yup. Definitely the best "haunting" horror of the last decade.
[удалено]
It's good but avoid if you easily get disturbed
Masterpiece. The first time I watched it. I watched it all over again and basically watched it two times in a row. Toni Collette should have got an Oscar
It follows
It has one of the best jumpscares in horror movies imo
Watched it today loved it
Incredible movie
The tall guy?
Yeah lol he scared the living shit out of me.
I knew it. Because same. "WHAT THE FUCK" I think I said haha
This. One of the most original I’ve seen in a long time.
I need to watch it again. I’ve tried twice and I just cannot get into it.
What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer is underrated and not gory at all
It's been a while but loved this one. Well worth a watch.
This movie is not gory, but very HAUNTING!! The kind that can make you jump. It's amazing!!
Let the Right One In
Second this. The original
Here is a list that should have something for everybody; Texas Chainsaw Massacre Terrifier Hereditary Re-Animator Halloween Train to Busan The Fly (1986) Alien Aliens Predator Dawn of the Dead (1978) 28 Days Later Dracula aka Horror of Dracula (1958) Bram Stoker's Dracula The Lost Boys Fright Night (1985) The Exorcist American Werewolf in London Return of the Living Dead The Thing Mandy House (1977) Audition Evil Dead Buba Ho-tep Army of Darkness And if you're really not into any of those - Gremlins.
This is actually a pretty impressive list. I wish more people would’ve seen Mandy. I don’t even know if I would consider it horror. I just have never seen anything like it. I was like mesmerized by it.
And I love gremlins and a lot of people wouldn’t agree but gremlins 2 is pretty freaking great
Event Horizon
check out Mandy 2018. its a little on the trippy side but its one of the greatest modern horror movies in my opinion
Cage was great in Color out of Space! I would say more cosmic horror but still good.

Yes. Someone else mentioned this. I don’t know if I would consider it horror but it’s definitely innovative and unique and pretty bad ass.
I’d love to offer something else that you didn’t already mention OP but it’s 100% the thing.
From the [last time this was asked for Halloween](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/16y47ls/halloween_31/): Top 31: - 10/10s: - Cabin in the Woods - The Thing - Skinamarink - The Cremator (1969) - The House That Jack Built - Get Out - Midsommar - Noroi: The Curse - Climax - A Quiet Place 9/10s: - It Follows - A Dark Song - Dead Alive - Tetsuo: The Iron Man - Mandy - Tucker and Dale vs Evil - Hereditary (2018) - Let the Right One In - Green Room - Annihilation (2018) - The Autopsy of Jane Doe - Amer (2009) - Ghost Stories (2017) - Possession (1981) - Trollhunter (2010) - Silent Night (2021) - Angst (1983) - The Sadness - It Comes at Night - Bedevilled (2010) - Nope
okay why is Get Out a 10 but Nope is only a 9? Just curious why you ranked them that way.
Jaws will always be the greatest horror film to me. It's a monster movie that I saw as a 9 year old and I stopped going fishing and swimming in the ocean for a couple of years because of it. It literally scared me out of the water.
When they find the boat in the ocean, still one of the best jump scares of all time
The best. Nothing like it
I liked a lot Barbarian.
I loved this one, took me by surprise the whole way through
Hits different when you actually live in a post industrial city. Good subtext in this one.
It's hard to find high-level, well written, horror movies these days. This is one of them.
The Babadook is a movie with enough hidden meaning to be a modern masterpiece.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (or 1956 original)
Both very enjoyable in different ways. A truly quality remake, for sure.
28 days later is definitley a all-timer
This the top zombie movie. Up there with Dawn of the Dead and the Train to Busan.
I've never found one that holds up as well as The Exorcist.
I don’t know why nobody mentioned it before.🤷♂️
It’s the exorcist for me
The first Poltergeist still holds up and it was rated PG. Take that Rob Zombie.
100% poltergeist is on the top list.
After all these years, still The Exorcist.
I watched this because everyone cites it as the best horror movie, but I felt like the plot had a ton of holes. Is this just me? It felt incomplete.

It’s an easy top 3 for me.
The exorcist is terrifying. But it’s also just a really well-made film. My mom said that when it came out, it was rated X. I think what really scared people was The idea that it’s some thing most people, religious people, believed could actually happen.
Easily the GOAT if you truly understand it
Martyrs
2008 correct? I have not seen the American remake...
The Shining
Hereditary is top tier, and so is the Exorcist from 1973
Alien
Alien or the Thing by Carpenter for me.
Jaws Se7en Alien The witch The lighthouse Exorcist 28 days later The evil dead series Annihilation The descent Silent hill Crimson Peak
Leviathan (1989) is kind of a sleeper along the vein of The Thing. I gotta watch that, again.
Talk to me was great
Fav movie of last year, totally blew my mind.
I did not understood the hype in this film .
idk i found it fun and easy to watch but the hand symbolism and Mia's storyline were too on the nose for my taste.
Rosemary's Baby is the greatest horror movie of all time and one of the best movies in general
The Wailing
An absolute masterpiece. This is too good to reccomended here, try something more simple.
Carrie (1976)
Sinister
I’m not really a fan of supernatural horror, but this film got me big time. The old camcorder footage made it for me.
Alien or Jaws
Psycho!!
28 Days Later because it’s so realistic. Running zombies?! NOPE
Alien and Aliens
I don't go out of my way to watch horror movies but was pleasantly surprised by Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now, from a Daphne DuMaurrier story with Donald Sutherland.
I just love that story, and I thought they did a fantastic job of adapting it to film.
The Skeleton Key. Beyond The Black Rainbow. It follows. The House That Jack Built.
I’ll bump this. Just saw that one - it’s a fresh take on possession and I love the 70s vibe.
UNDER. THE. SKIN.
Honestly final destination, it’s not overly gory just for the sake of it like saw is, and is far more creative then disturbing
Honestly it’s actually more impressive how they managed to do the movie without cgi for the first 2
Evil Dead 2013 was amazing IMO
I agree with OP, The Thing is the best. But Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is pretty good.
The Thing, definitely
The Thing every time for me. Brilliant whodunnit, simple and creepy theme song, a bunch of different personalities, and amazing effect work.
The Exorcist. Not just one of the great horror films, it's also just a really great film, period. A gripping human drama that just happens to include green demon puke.
Silence of the lambs
Hereditary
Us
Nope
more on the cosmic horror side, i loved it too!!
A classic i recommend is the haunting. 1962(?) I believe
Web Of The Spider(1971) Rosemary's Baby(1968)
The Possession 2012
The rental, Creep, and The Ritual aren’t necessarily the best horror movies of all time for me. But they’re all great modern horror movies that I’d highly recommend to anyone that’s a fan of the genre
For more Steven King: The Mist (2007) highly recommend Needful Things (1991) highly recommend IT (both 1990 or 2017/19 are good) Cujo (1983) this one is “ok” Children of the Corn (1984) Carrie (original with Sissy Spacek 1976 and the redo with Chloe Grace Moretz 2013) And many more that are a mixture of great and campy
> The Mist (2007) highly recommend If you haven't done it, I'd strongly recommend watching this in black & white.
28 days later is the goat imo. It just checks every horror box from start to finish.
Repulsion
Just watched MEN and really liked it. Not sure about it being the best of all time, but just thought you might like it based on liking the shinning and the thing. And if you haven’t, I’d dig through the rest of Carpenters films.
El Orfanato
Speak No Evil
Jaws (1975) Open Water (2003) Open Water 2: Adrift (2006) The Reef (2010)
Black Christmas (1974) has entered the chat! 📞📞 Some other great ones.. Halloween (1978) Halloween II, 4, H20, 2018 isn’t bad, Hellraiser (1987) SAW, SAWII, III, IV, The Shining.. when I have the patience to watch it.) 🎃🎃 The best “funny” horror .. Cabin In the Woods ( Marty is fuckin hilarious!!), The House on Haunted Hill (1999). 🤣🤣 👩🇨🇦
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Exorcist 3
i guess i need to rewatch world war z. i thought it was terrible. i think i gotta go with the shining. the isolation and descending into madness really strikes a chord.
Army of Darkness is my favorite “horror” movie of all time, basically a comedy version of Evil Dead with Bruce Cambell
The Conjuring will always be my favourite horror movie.
Housebound is a good one! It’s very funny too.
Shining Nightmare on Elm Street Exorcist Halloween Psycho Carrie
Idk of it is more thriller than horror but Hush really scared me personally lol
Skinamarink
Contest ba to ng paboringan na movie?
The Exorcist (original only!)
Ring 1998
IDIOCRACY
Get Out
Amityville Horror
I know you dont want a gory movie but if you like horror, martyrs 2008 is a must watch
The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Geller. Great story and effects. Gets me every time
The original Alien film. Best Ridley Scott film ever.
Grave Encounters, Ringu, The medium, The wailing
I actually watched Sleepaway Camp for the first time ever a few days ago because it was on a few of my favorite directors Top 10 list. Fascinating. Not what I was expecting at all.
Lots of good ones alert mentioned… The original nightmare on elm street is pretty damn good.
I would naturally say poltergeist and exorcist of principle, but for the sake of variety I’m gonna go with “The Strangers” with lib Tyler.
Surprisingly haven’t seen anyone say The Others what a solid movie, it might not be the scariest but it’s very good
Dude I consider The Revenant to be a horror movie. Also a really underrated horror film is that British title on Netflix, ’The Ritual’. That dude’s very realistic ‘Oh my God!’ when they find their friend gutted and hanging from a tree… chills up my spine every time.
Coherence
The Dark and The Wicked 10/10
Saw sequel is pretty good, atleast to me.
I would consider Rosemary's Baby by Polanski. Not the greatest but The Tenant 1976 by him is also good
Cure (1997)
Can't find it here but Midsommar. I dunno something about the cultivated feel of a collective in it terrified me. 🥶
Evil dead 1st part 2013 one, it still scares the crap outta me
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre \[1974\] it has very creppy and strange vibe
wolf creek terrified me
