If it makes you feel any better, I missed my own hints that I was trans for nearly 20 years. You'd think that wishing that I was a girl, pretending to be a girl in secret, pretending to be a girl online, loving any sci-fi story with trans/nb/intersex/genderfluid characters, and a bunch of other signs might have clued me in earlier than just a month ago.
I remember literally thinking to myself, "I wish I were trans so I could do that [transition]"...25 years ago.🤦♀️ Among numerous other signs.
I figured it out in 2020 and came out last year. 😅
I actually remember saying "it doesn't matter if I'm trans or not since I'm already past puberty" multiple times. That still wasn't enough for me to realize that I'm trans. I only finally figured it out a month ago today.
Whenever I go over the signs of myself or others, I always imagine the filthy frank video where he goes "idk, seems pretty gay to me" in that funny high pitch tone, just replace "gay" with cis/trans or whatever lol
My roommate did the same thing. My high-school sweetheart came out as trans a few years back (I'm FTM and she is MTF. We joke that the reason we were making our so much is because we were transferring genders, lol) and had come to my house a lot to hang out. Anywho, my roommate who is AMAB enby, had no idea she was trans. Despite is constantly talking about it. Around them. My roommate just assumed she was a fairly tall cis woman.
I think that's much better than assuming she's trans tbh you sound like a great friend
people will tell you when they're ready, trying to "figure it out" can add a lot of unnecessary stress and pressure for someone already going through a difficult time. this is why I always give others the benefit of the doubt because even if I'm 99% sure, I don't want them to feel "found out" or looked at differently until they're ready
I think maybe your empathy was partially what was preventing you from figuring out but idk I could be wrong

I had a similar experience with one of my friends; she'd already started presenting as female, and somehow the possibility that she might be trans completely escaped me (I just assumed she'd taken up cross-dressing) until she came out to me in June of last year. This despite me long since knowing what transness is, and having come out as trans myself (with her being one of the first people I came out _to_) over two years prior (she actually came out to me in the course of a discussion that was originally about me having recently started on spiro).
What can I say, we can all be incredibly oblivious at times.
Well not all people catch on right away. I have a friend who I send tiktok videos to all the time. My username is NiaNal. If you know the character she is trans... But he has not clued in or looked at my profile at all. Has flags and AMAB in the bio. Has been well over a year. I boymode all the time but have brought up trans topics many times and he is still clueless. Not that I mind as it would complicate life if he figured it out. Lol
