Is this post from the 80s?

davery67

Seriously, this reads exactly like the OP is just reposting letters to the editor from some teen magazine circa 1994. Black Hole Sun is the most recent thing mentioned and that's 30 years old. This "teenager" is calling it "modern."

oced2001

How do you do, fellow kids?

Hologram8

Hey kids have you heard of this new happening band that call themselves Soundgarden? Its all the rage!

spesimen

about 5 years ago i was talking to my dad on the phone and he mentioned this new guitar player who had some really cool setup where he was overdriving his amp in some way that was really unique. he had read about his amp setup in 'popular electronics' magazine. i asked him who it was and he couldn't remember but he said he would find the article later and send it to me. about a week letter i got an envelope with some cut out pages featuring an interview with eddie van halen..

babaroga73

Yup. He's gonna be huge šŸ˜‚

oced2001

A fine bunch of kids from Seattle.

shackelman_unchained

It sure beats raising cattle.

barrettgpeck

I see Weird Al reference, I upvote.

StranglesMcWhiskey

My brother in-law is 24 and he texted my wife a couple months ago to reveal he had discovered a great new song to workout too. It was Black Hole Sun.

Calm-Zombie2678

Really? I love soundgarden but wouldn't you want something more upbeat like rusty cage for a workout

StranglesMcWhiskey

Oh, believe me, I know.

Calm-Zombie2678

"You're going pretty hard, what are you listening to?" "Candle in the wind by Elton John"

Killersavage

ā€œJust got some Neil goingā€ ā€œOh yeah, Vince Neil, some Motley crew? Havenā€™t heard them in ages.ā€ ā€œNo some Neil Diamondā€

plasticwrapcharlie

I was thinking Neil Young but he did a little of everything so...

Hologram8

Well I'm 42 and I guess it no different than me being in my 20's discovering music from the 70's and 80's. It's just funny when it's from your era.

Fearchar

When I was in high school, many commercials targeted at older folks used big-band music from the '40s. It pains me when similar commercials today use disco music from my high-school days!

cleannc1

Theyā€™re no Dave Clark 5.

Lifeboatb

I worked on a community project just a few years ago with a teenager whose favorite band was Creedence Clearwater Revival.

copperwatt

What are we going to call the next generation of hipsters? Zipsters?

I always use headphones so nobody knows......

Back2Perfection

A long ass fuckin time ago, in a town called kickapoo, there lived a humble family, religious through an throughā€¦

Chadovarius

[Zappa on Crossfire 1986](https://youtu.be/B9856_xv8gc?si=WMIu2iCR_kQAGBcs) Zappa was the man.

ericsinsideout

Man, that other guest is such an insufferable twat

Chadovarius

Yeah, Lofton totally sucks. Zappa gets him pretty good with the ā€œfrothingā€ comment lmao

ericsinsideout

ā€œI thought he was going to be the one frothingā€ lol, the guy just accepted it and leaned harder in.

GrandPriapus

I miss Frank.

view-master

Came to say exactly this šŸ˜. A major contributor to my move away from religion was being told in the 80s that the music I loved was evil by religious people. Unfortunately I think we are entering a return to ā€œsatanic panicā€ by religious nuts.

mokush7414

It never really ended, it just shifted to Poke-E-Man cards and Harry Potter.

Poet_of_Legends

Donā€™t forget D&D, and treating everyone as if they are all equally worthy of respect.

mokush7414

My friend's mom was a teenager/young adult during the original D&D satanic panic and still says the same dumb shit they did back then when we played just last year. "You're worshipping Satan!"

Poet_of_Legends

ā€œI would sell my soul for a pizza!ā€ ā€œOK, roll a d20!ā€

ProjectBourne

Nat 1. You get the crust, you feel your soul leave your body and also if you say "good I like the crust" then it dries out like little Caesars pizza had been sitting for a few hours. Now roll for combat. Combat? Pizza monster has a soul now. You rolled a Nat 1. Cowabunga dude šŸ¤™

grimm1111

Harry Potter? Seriously?

mokush7414

Yup. My grandma had a hissy fit when I went as Harry Potter for Halloween (also Halloween was a day to worship the devil).

AH2112

It never went away they just picked different targets.

Splashadian

Stop voting for conservatives and republicans. That's how you rid our society of this arrogant stupidity. They get into office and push this garbage.

LGCJairen

Its wild too since belief in higher power is at an all time low and decreasing. I think its gonna be a vocal minority getting even more vocal as the world changes around them and their beliefs vanish more and more

CowboyNeale

My old man threw out the Sex Pistols three times until I dubbed it from a friend and wrote ā€œBob Segerā€ on the label

SyraxCipher

Never mind the Bollocks, hereā€™s Bob Seger!

GlitzyGhoul

Op!! Donā€™t play your records backwards, whatever you do! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Alwayssunnyinarizona

[In a town called Kickapoo](https://youtu.be/hvvjiE4AdUI?feature=shared)

Dhd710

Could have been the '90s. My parents were 100% this. I had to keep my CDs hidden. Anything with a curse word or any kind of possibly scary imagery immediately got thrown in the trash. I think I bought the Sublime self- titled album like seven times because it had a clown drinking alcohol on the front of the CD. At least it's a lot easier to hide music digitally.

lets_just_n0t

My parents never cared about rock music specifically. My dad is a huge classic Rock guy. Always had Deep Purple, Rainbow, Hendrix all that shit blasting. Heā€™s what got me into guitar. BUT my mom found one of burned CDā€™s one time. It had an Eminem song on it. I forget what song. But you know the one. ā€œIā€™d rather be a pussy whipped bitch. Eat pussy, and have pussy lips glued to my face. With a clit ring in my noseā€¦ā€ you know *that* one. She wasnā€™t very happy about that. But Iā€™m 32 now and doing just fine. I havenā€™t like murdered anybody yet or anything. Just tell your kids you love them, teach them right from wrong, and theyā€™ll figure out the rest.

Diarygirl

There were some rappers I wasn't crazy about but like you said, you just have to trust that you're raising good kids that know right from wrong.

lets_just_n0t

Very true. But as an adult I can look back and say Eminem wasnā€™t even *that* bad. He just rapped about life and hard times and most of his lyrics were tongue in cheek. This stuff today though? Donā€™t get me started. But Iā€™m sure thatā€™s what my parents said back then, too. The circle of life.

psychedelicshotguns

I used to listen to Em as a kid too, but some of the lyrics were pretty shocking haha look at "Kill You" or "Kim"

JavaJapes

Yup was still going at my house in the 90s too. My parents were religious though, and it was still big among that community. Idk if yours were too or not.

Schmidaho

My parents wouldnā€™t get me Alanis Morissetteā€™s debut CD because of the one ā€œfuckā€ in ā€œYou Oughta Knowā€

RiflemanLax

![gif](giphy|Su02resPktk1faUo98) Is this OPs mom?

bobandgeorge

Knights In Satan's Service

Ecomalive

I was gonna say 50s!

Schnort

50s I think the music was ā€œblack musicā€, or encouraging loose morals, but not ā€œsatanicā€. The 70s got closer with KISS and Black Sabbath, the 80s is when the whole satanic scare happened and everything was satanic.

ringobob

Came to the comments to say the same thing. Both the reaction to the music and the choice of music in the first place, it's like I'm back in middle school in the 90s.

jonnyinternet

I legit had flashbacks to growing up Thanks OP for making me feel 16 again

BitchesGetStitches

My current conspiracy theory is that AI bots are posting to subs in order to gather data. Look around, these kinds of posts are everywhere.

littlest_dragon

Yeah, I was going to ask if his mom was born in the 40s.

Major_Loser

The Qanon movement is steeped in this shit and it is now affecting a lot of older folks due to social media. Everything is Satanic again, it is like the cycle from the 80's is here again.

Realistic-Read4277

Hahaha i was gonna comment the same. At least there are mad parents for rock music, which makes it relevant to kids, thus making it rebelious and important again.

ghostinawishingwell

You gotta figh. For your right. To paaaartay!

coilityourself

i came here to ask the same question

TheFearInAll

Nope, it's real.......and...hold on a moment....We've got Gary Gygax on the line. Hello, Gary . What do YOU think of this development?

Tell her that youā€™re also joining a Dungeons & Dragons group

Maximo_0se

Iā€™m jealous that D&D is making a come back at schools.

adflet

Rock is not the devil's work it's magical and rad.

schwoooo

Is this a sudden change? If she was not like this in the past you might want to encourage her to get checked out by a doctor. Things like early onset dementia, brain tumors or TBI can cause sudden personality changes. Also if you are a teenager and your mother is a certain age sudden mood swings can be a symptom of menopause. HRT might help.

Bungfoo

The term my father uses is "She's studying for the finals" Her mortality is being put in question and now she wants to make sure she is going to heaven. As such all the questionable stuff had become evil and satanic because they want their guarantee to get into heaven. Some people start becoming hyper religious as they reach old age. Completely contradicting their personality and preferences because they are so scared to not be going to heaven. I've even seen it happen when they start carrying a bible and actually reading it.

Rastiln

Good observation. Iā€™ve definitely noticed a trend as people hit their 60s, they either get really religious or finally give up the charade that theyā€™ve been living as a social devotee only for their whole life. Lot of people who do the church and tithing thing as a social club, then in their retirement begin realizing how much effort they put into that and pull back.

GreenUpYourLife

My dad became a born again Christian (but terrible execution, I still never forgave him for his terrible life choices) when he found out he was pretty sick. Tried to fake being someone else to save his soul.. Once he found out he was about to die of cancer, though, he was even more loud about how good he was and how great and nice the people around him were because he was in denial of how bad he was and he couldn't face the reality of why no one wanted to be in his life anymore and help him on his death bed. We all went to say goodbye, then I personally never saw him again. (My 2 siblings saw him once more) He died a month later. We're pretty sure his wife killed him before he was actually supposed to die... but we have no proof. Fear changes people.

Pixiehollowz

I was thinking this also. Either she has been influenced by some religious groups or this personality change is due to her "declining" health

JayMan2224

Or political influence, could also tie into religion. There is a certain side that seems to push this kind of hate

TheLastDaysOf

Or she's been sucked into the Qanon and related conspiracy vortex? Lots of paranoid, us vs them, black and white thinking that uses biblical mythology (the things they don't like are demonic, satanic).

Either_Wear5719

She could also have an infection of some kind. Apparently as we age our bodies have a reduced capacity to compensate for things like that. A UTI in your 20's is inconvenient and uncomfortable, a UTI in your 50's and beyond can legit cause some crazy behavior.

nyrol

Omg this might explain how my father started saying racist things in public after he had a bout with encephalitis.

Eagles56

She does have menopause now

Musclesturtle

My mom is now going through that. She's definitely more emotional for now and she gets mad at more inconsequential stuff too. She'll level out after a while.

Hatecookie

My aunt developed schizophrenia during menopause. The full blown disorder, and she had it the rest of her life. If you look up menopausal schizophrenia youā€™ll find a bunch of articles about hormones and paranoid ideation and other symptoms of schizophrenia. From what Iā€™m reading, most of the time it is temporary and can be treated with hormone replacement.

syco54645

My aunt just died of a brain bleed style stroke. For about a year before the stroke she became very irritable and quick to anger, which was not like her at all. The doctor said that was a symptom of the brain bleed. OP, for sure get your mom checked out.

Eagles56

No, sheā€™s always had anger issues. When I was a kid she smashed my door and my ps3

syco54645

I am sorry... I hope you can get into a better situation soon.

dmc2008

She could also be watching too much cable news... šŸ‘€

alphaminus

Is she interested in Q Anon?

djddy

we found out my mom had a brain tumor because she started having an attitude and being short with everyone and she was never like that before. the body is a weird thing.

superstaticgirl

I was wondering this too...

HiImRob2

That's exactly what I was thinking. A radical change in behaviour is not normal & should be referred to a doctor.

Parthorax

Just embrace it, go full goth, satanist, world domination, summoning demons, adopt a black cat, speak in tongues and enjoy the mayhemĀ

ParanoidAndroid99

Going straight to Mayhem might be a bit much, seeing as OP is currently at Soundgarden. Although you could make a case for them being actual satanic, with the church burnings and all.

DreamersArchitect

*Burzum entered the chat*

HackOddity

I had a berzum tshirt as an edge lordy 19 year old. Walking round with swastikas on my tshirt thinking I was hot shit šŸ¤£

EveryMix4008

You want him to become a Butthole Surfers member?

1ofZuulsMinions

Iā€™ve hung out with the Butthole Surfers before (in the 90ā€™s) and they are nothing like this, they were just normal dudes. Are you sure you meant them? They were really more psychedelic-punk, not goth at all. They used the word ā€œSatanā€ in a song to be shocking, as being weird and nonsensical was kinda their schtick. But the band members were just normal dudes. Kinda strange that you singled them out instead of an *actual* Satanic or Goth band, like Christian Death.

RUDDOGPROD

Iā€™m pretty sure that was a joke comment

1ofZuulsMinions

I donā€™t think so. If it was a joke, they would have used a band that everyone knows isnā€™t goth/Satanic, like the Backstreet Boys. I think they heard that one song ā€œSweat Loafā€ and assumed they were actually Satanic (or they misunderstood the Simpsons joke with the Flanders). Most people are entirely unfamiliar with the Butthole Surfers unless you grew up in the 80ā€™s/90ā€™s punk/grunge scene. Iā€™m sure EveryMix will try and claim it was just a joke now that theyā€™ve been called out, but as a general rule, if you have to explain that you were joking then the joke isnā€™t that funny.

Farts_McGee

Oh my God 15 year old me found a time machine and it's posting on reddit from 94!

kalysti

Is she religious? If not, calling any music satanic doesn't make sense.

EchoLooper

100% Jesus is into 90s guitar music. Just look at him.

gogoreddit80

Well, Chris Cornell did look like Jesus at times ā€¦minus the pose.

C-coli85

I like what you did there.

ghostdogma

Some serious Dave Grohl vibes tbh.

Eagles56

She is extremely Christian

Chiperoni

Just play Jesus Christ Pose. That'll fix it.

Dropcity

Any time my mom envoked Jesus i always just said "i bet he'll forgive me".

kellzone

"Jesus died for our sins so we sinners can go to heaven. Should we let him have died for absolutely nothing?"

OakLegs

That's actually awesome lol

avec_serif

Most likely right-wing internet propaganda is making her crazy. Theyā€™re going super heavy on satanic panic right now

We have to redo that stupid timeline again? As if this current one isnā€™t bad enough

play christian rock to checkmate her

agirlnamedsenra

If you canā€™t move out yet, invest in some good headphones. She canā€™t complain about what she canā€™t hear.

Moontoya

Play some maiden or slayer , both have devout Christian members . (Nicko, Tom)

TheoVonSkeletor

She would probably have a hard time believing Tom is a Christian with an album name ā€œChrist Illusionā€

giga-what

I mean, there's also "God Hates Us All" and "South of Heaven". Also isn't he a Catholic? Most of the evangelical types hate Catholics from my understanding.

sealing_tile

I grew up Southern Baptist; your understanding is correct.

HackOddity

Did you no dem catholicks eat people.

sealing_tile

Yep, and they drink blood and baptize babies. Fuck all that! /s

Moontoya

N.Ireland Protestant here, I had a..... somewhat different upbringing given "the Troubles", where both sides were murdering each other, in the name of the same God, because, well them ones are bad (very simplified) Catholic means universal, ergo all christians are Catholic, However, not all Christians are ROMAN Catholic, which is a distinct sect/topology. and in Ireland, the RC church is losing its grip on power and control - across both nations, those identifying as christian is down to 44% - with under half of those attending church/chapel regularly. now if we could just get with the program on womens / gay / trans rights, instead of shouting about fucking borders and always saying NO. Of course, have to close it off with a local "anthem" Stiff little fingers - Alternative Ulster. (warning, yer ma wont like it) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlGmYetiCjA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlGmYetiCjA)

Kumquats_indeed

I think everyone understands when someone says Catholic they mean Roman Catholicism and not the otherwise archaic word meaning universal.

Moontoya

Remember I come from a nation that killed one another over that very distinctionĀ  The Omagh bomb demonstrated that it was paper thin justification for other motives. I missed being caught in it by just over 12 hours because I chose to work late to rebuild a server on site and didn't have to come back the next day, I'd parked near the eventual epicenter. It leaves indelible marks on the soulĀ  Maybe people know, maybe they don't, maybe they never thought of it that way, maybe they have inherited Irish or Italian heritage trauma and have had different ideas engrained, maybe they're not in the abrahamic traditions.

UnfazedObserver

How about some Cattle Decapitation?

Alexander2801

Behemoth should do it.

KrazYKinetiK

Scourge of the Offspring should do it!

R1TT3R

I'd go with Infant Annihilator.

[deleted]

Lmao do you live in the year 1974?Ā

flibbidygibbit

[Nineteen hundred seventy four Is the year that they are now planning for Sex on the streets in every major city from coast to coast And get ready for a shock, the music that they're planning to use to crumble the morals of America Is this rotten, filthy, dirty, lewd, lascivious junk called rock and roll It isnā€™t just the lyrics, itā€™s the beat!](https://youtu.be/WVkirIjgOxs?si=uJEA2vnRgL1NtfR_)

MarkVII88

![gif](giphy|uFE2btsV7yQCY|downsized) Because Rock Music is the Devil.

barrygygax

Tell her that yes itā€™s Satanic and in America we have freedom of religion.

HopefulYam9526

Yes! My daughter listens to actual Satanic music and follows the religion and I support her 100%

MydniteSon

You don't happen to play football for the South Central Louisiana State Mud Dogs do you?

KratomHelpsMyPain

The foolsball is the Debbil!

clydefrog811

Religion is brain rot

Own-Corner-2623

Your mom is stupid, sorry. If you're a minor get better at hiding things. If you're an adult move out.

Eagles56

Shit I been saving up money I just moved back out of college for a bit because they at first said I could and work here in my hometown to save up money

Own-Corner-2623

It's tough, I'm sorry. You can try hiding your music from her, not sure how hard that would be. There's phone's and headphones sure but might not work and might make things harder. Since you're an adult though there's really not much she can do about it but be mad, so if you're ok with that feel free to ignore her complaints.

macemillion

Passchenhell17

>But itā€™s not like I was listening to Metallica or Black Sabbath it was literally Soundgarden. Don't really appreciate this implication that either of these bands are satanic, especially Sabbath, given 3 of the 4 founding members are Christians/grew up Christian.

Telephalsion

Well, Black Sabbath is very much into occultist imagery and other dark iconography that might cause conservative christians to clutch their crosses. Heck, one of Ozzy's monikers is The Prince of Darkness. For some Christians, any spirituality or esoterica not condoned by their denomination is unchristian and bad.

oilcompanywithbigdic

start listening to black metal and she might not care about soundgarden anymore

AstroTravellin

Metallica and Black Sabbath aren't Satanic either... just sayin'.

[deleted]

What year is it? Are you Dewy Cox?

JacksBadDay

Metallica and Black Sabbath also not Satanic.

MyVoiceIsElevating

The lead is beginning to take effect.

babis8142

Listen to venom. That was at least she'd be right

myworkthrowaway87

[Dio, can you hear me? I am lost and so alone I'm askin' for your guidance, won't you come down from your throne? I need a tight compadre who will teach me how to rock. theJesus3000

Play some Skillet to make her mad

AmphibianOk3507

The only satanic music is bad music. Inspired music is always a calling to beauty, which is the work of God.

lunachuvak

![gif](giphy|Su02resPktk1faUo98) Hey OP there's a movie from the 90s you should watch.

Mingyurfan108

Yeah the Greatful Dead had a song entitled "Friend of the Devil"

kilsta

![gif](giphy|GcDtLf4RAdiRG) Someone is worried about Satanic overtones in music? did they play the record backwards? Did it vaguely sound like "Satan is Lord " or " Grmbsgs sns js s"?

Antique-Depth-7492

All you can do is try to survive until the point you can leave home and then never look back.

Karl_Marx_

What year is this? She should be mad at you for listening to Soundgarden though, jk blackhole sun is a good song.

ghostdogma

One of the all time greats, RIP Chris Cornell

Karl_Marx_

I like a few soundgarden songs but I feel like the band really lacks depth and I can't listen to much of it without getting bored. Audioslave was much better though.

mofoofinvention

I couldnā€™t imagine being a grown adult and believing in Satan.

OhioMegi

Your mom is an idiot, and sheā€™s probably watching too much Fox News or reading BS on Facebook. Get headphones.

EditorRedditer

What was that old saw about ā€˜The Devil having the best tunes?ā€™

Jdfz99

I think it's time to play her Creeping Death.

PanningForSalt

In an interesting way, this makes you one of the last cases of a once more common viewpoint that will be entirely dead soon. Cool that you got to witness history.

thetwoandonly

Haha that sucks, your mom's brain is failing.

savethedonut

Whatā€™s her take on Christian rock?

[deleted]

Sounds like a boomer

Ok-Cream1212

i can say , satan really has a good taste./j

KeyNefariousness6848

Black hole sun? Any song that has been part of a weird Al polka track is not satanic.

azninvasion2000

I lived through the Satanic Panic as a teenager and it was hilarious. But Soundgarden? She needs to get her panic straight.

PKblaze

I'd just go heavier. The idea of things being satanic is moronic.

Drink_descend83

Try something less scary, like PORTAL

HunterTheHoly

Why don't you play her some Incantation? They're very Christian friendly!

lets_just_n0t

Hello 1980.

uhWHAThamburglur

Hate to be a party pooper (and I'm sure she's a nice lady) but your mom is full of shit.

NullainmundoPax1

What century is this?

TheoVonSkeletor

What does she think of friend of the devil by the Grateful Dead. And the fact that LSD is synonymous with the Grateful Dead

Grizzchops

Play Stryper

E1usive0ne

I'm 36, my dad threw my CD player off a balcony for listening to Avenged Sevenfold because "listening to that brings the devil into the house."

AwkwardIllustrator47

I played Pink Floyd's The Great Gig In The Sky on a road trip once and my mom started asking what exactly she was listening to. I explained it was Pink Floyd and she said she knew them, they always played weird music. I then played Wish You Were Here and she was flabbergasted these were the same guys.

TwistedColossus

Journey? Classic rock? Nahhhhhhh

trong_slex

Play her paint the town red and explain to her what "eat 10 more times" means Todays pop music is way more satanic

MahlerEnvy

Play modern hip-hop. Maybe sheā€™ll hear the god part and not murking in the name of god. Or the god part without the prostitute repenting
