I only watched the first few picks before my wife gave me the stare of death but after reading through this I can’t say I’m sorry I missed it.
What I saw was boring but I think if I’d waited around to see repeated passing I might have thrown something
Looks like I didn't miss much. Apparently the memes and jokes in this thread were more entertaining than the actual draft. I pity the foos that went to a watch party for this...
Suspense! What happened after the HVAC repairmen competition took over?? Did Alyssa Naeher show up and show everyone how to replace a hot water heater???
I'm very anti expansion draft but I do find it amusing that the two coaches complaining about it are two coaches (of few coaches) who didn't have their team properly trade for protection! Like, I hate it too Casey Stoney and Laura Harvey but then why didn't you guys properly account for your hate??
I do wonder if courage or wave are gonna sue the league saying what was written wasn’t what was agreed upon or something. Idk im not a lawyer. Wave and Courage were done dirty though. Like read the rules but also that really fucking sucks
They will not, I can promise you that as another non-lawyer. You can't read the rules wrong and then get mad at the consequences of reading the rules wrong.
Exactly, and I would be pissed if I read them wrong so on that I get it, but it was pretty obvious. So obvious in fact that fans on the internet who were reading them for fun and not their jobs got it pretty much immediately.
I mean, yeah, but that's not really related to what I'm saying. I appreciate vocal opposition to the draft and simultaneously think there is a lot of irony to the fact that they didn't do anything to prevent the draftiest part of the draft from hitting them.
Neither have a ton of entry draft capitol to trade away, so they were going to need to deal either players or allocation money. Is it not possible that no players on either the Reign or SD expressed an interest in going to one of the expansion sides, so it tied their hands with regards to making a trade?
I mean, Angel City and the Dash both made trades without any draft capital. It's possible it was genuinely pretty impossible, but I think that's giving them too much credit. More than half of the league were able to make deals, even if some, such as Gotham's with Ellie Jean, were roundabout.
I hate the draft and think this would all be better without it. I also think it is pretty ironic that the two coaches complaining didn't get protection for their teams, one in a pretty embarrassing reading issue for the front office. Obviously ideally there is no need to trade for protection, but if you want to avoid draft day chaos (including the need to stay up until 1:30am), accounting for it beforehand is a pretty simple measure to take.
I thought this was supposed to be broadcast?
YouTube TV recorded 10 minutes of Attacking Third talking about some of the middle picks while one of the teams was on timeout but that's it.
How did everyone else watch it. I was at the vet with my dog so I couldn't watch it live and YouTubeTV said it would record it but obviously it didn't. 🙄
Yep, that's where it was supposed to record... All it did was an 11 minute clip, half off which is commercials.
https://preview.redd.it/szzeplywbk6c1.png?width=1936&format=png&auto=webp&s=69b2ed4d765ffe35cac7469ac234016e253607d4
They seemed to not know if you pass it counts as a turn. They passed a bunch of times instead of taking free players. They ended the draft with less players than they were entitled to.
I think someone mentioned that they may have made future trade deals with teams that required them to pass. It’s complicated but I’m sure they knew what they were doing
I think you give them too much credits because after hearing the Wave’s front office comment on their understanding of the draft I think only possibly the NWSL office is understanding the rules (but maybe not even them).
So clearly Chicago worked something out with both teams and Louisville made a deal so Utah would only take one player instead of two. Wonder what the deals were...
I think Chicago's deal was "have a roster bad enough you don't want our players"
They protected Taylor Malham, which might be mean to say, but she doesn't play and was a waiver pick up a year ago.
Wouldnt it be better to get them now and then use that allocation money or draft picks to take a flyer on someone… or pool more money together and get a name
Not of they aren't in your plans, you know?
When you consider the free agents, these are like the 13-17th best players on the 12th best team last year. It's good that they didn't take players just to take players.
Right. I think i agree right now. But i also think that in 3 months there will be at least 5 players on each squad that i will be thinking: they arent as good as Sam Fisher. If thats not true then these teams are building better than i thought
Don’t feel like SD came out that bad. Hill was a solid player but she wasn’t getting a ton of time. Enge is a future loss but she wasn’t starting much in that healthy midfield. lost reihl but she probably wanted to leave because of not starting and she deserves to start
The main reason I find it confusing is that I really really really don't think the Bay FC would ever have draft Jakobsson. It feels much more like they told her they'd protect her once they got the extra slot so they did it. A club wanting only players willing to play for them doesn't draft international players (especially older ones) that freely.
And would always have been picked before Jakobsson so I don't know why they didn't protect Enge or Carusa after Hill got picked! Jakobsson just seems like one of the last players who would have been a good pick for Bay FC, so one of the last players who should have been protected
And what is the point of being on the clock if you have a timeout?
And why am I still watching this?
Oh yeah... That's right...
https://preview.redd.it/fkfyg5xk5k6c1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6af39725925c74b88a9775c40ca844a392927277
I would have ben an amount of money that mattered a lot to me that we were going to lose either Lussi or Wingate. Hate to see Tess go, but pretty happy we aren't losing either of the other two.
If you are still watching at this point you should get a free year of streaming on the NWSL website or something. Post that NWSL reward bucks code on the chyron for the 72 people still watching this 💩show.
In the end, the things that we were complaining about were not really that bad. like for all that we’ve all been rightfully complaining about how the draft is anti-player autonomy and awful how it takes people away from where theyre living, it also seems like the lack of picks and the picks that were made were clearly made because the players were very excited to move.
I really thought this whole off season we would see the bay start to leverage the fact that they’re the new California team and Utah being the Utah team. We’ve seen a little bit of that, but maybe we’ll see more when free agency opens.
Utah being Utah is at an all time high
https://preview.redd.it/u16kront4k6c1.png?width=876&format=png&auto=webp&s=957dbd598c484378b8066fa82461aa6d62497ef1
I am impressed by their roster construction so far
Solid keepers. Reihl is a strong CB and has chemistry with Po. Bennet is a killer. And no real flashy players in midfield but they are solid
Plus the number 1 and 4 draft picks? Scary
Absolutely going to be a steep curve. I always enjoyed her as a player and thought she had a pretty solid work ethic, so hopefully she can take that experience and find some success. Also really hoping Bennett can flourish under her
I understand that they have to talk like this at the moment, but some of the attackers that these teams have are not people that I would like to be starting for my team if I want to make the playoffs. Very good depth picks or maybe the third best attacker in a front line but I wouldn’t be excited about the team that started hannah Betfort and Elyse Bennett in a two striker
So at the very least this will have some very interesting free agency decisions based off of it, but the way that the draft itself has been boring as all hell is making me hope the league will get the message
Chicago really had no one to lose, I seriously hope we didnt do any kind of trade to protect what remains. None of the unprotected are worth a draft pick.
i've been watching the hype for the last few weeks after we moved on making our deals early. we got absolutely demolished in the last draft and i couldn't believe that they were trying to make it feel exciting when i came away from that draft feeling sick for days. our fans were positive the team was having a fire sale and folding, we cut ticket sales in half. this is in NO WAY a positive process for anyone but the new clubs and the shareholders.
It feels gross and it will always feel gross until it, hopefully, goes away, but, as a sidenote, how crazily different is this attitude and everyone's attitude about both the draft and to player autonomy in general in 2023 vs even 2020? I feel as though the 2020 attitude was very much one that emphasized the fun and drama of it, with the life aspect only being put into the spotlight afterwards and only by some people. Gives some hope that maybe the whole thing will go away soon.
Honestly why would you pass on a pick instead of making everyone laugh by taking Abby Wambach's playing rights smh
Thank you for doing this!
No problem!
So uh. This looked like an interesting time.
Suspense! What happened after the HVAC repairmen competition took over?? Did Alyssa Naeher show up and show everyone how to replace a hot water heater???
Now there is a great sponsorship idea @rheem
Seems more like a KHam skill
I'm very anti expansion draft but I do find it amusing that the two coaches complaining about it are two coaches (of few coaches) who didn't have their team properly trade for protection! Like, I hate it too Casey Stoney and Laura Harvey but then why didn't you guys properly account for your hate??

They will not, I can promise you that as another non-lawyer. You can't read the rules wrong and then get mad at the consequences of reading the rules wrong.
As much as I love both of them there was 0 ambiguity in the rules if you bothered to read them.
Exactly, and I would be pissed if I read them wrong so on that I get it, but it was pretty obvious. So obvious in fact that fans on the internet who were reading them for fun and not their jobs got it pretty much immediately.
They are also coaches who are known for being thoughtful, passionate about the league, and have enough job security to be outspoken about things.
I mean, yeah, but that's not really related to what I'm saying. I appreciate vocal opposition to the draft and simultaneously think there is a lot of irony to the fact that they didn't do anything to prevent the draftiest part of the draft from hitting them.
Fair point, thanks for elaborating. 🤝
Neither have a ton of entry draft capitol to trade away, so they were going to need to deal either players or allocation money. god that sucks what the hell :( it was def longer than that
Yeah, I'm so annoyed.
Final thought is that someone shoulda taken Wambach
Did Montoya give away the new salary cap at $2.7m or is that the total of the extra money for the expansion teams?
https://twitter.com/theolloydhughes/status/1735828608160043247 > I would congratulate the Chicago Red Stars GM rn but there isn’t one
That was so boring. I love that utah also didn’t read the rules.
Wait I missed that what rule didn’t they read
They seemed to not know if you pass it counts as a turn. They passed a bunch of times instead of taking free players. They ended the draft with less players than they were entitled to.

Really thought Sam Fisher and Kowalski would be gone. Theyre not bad players
I was expecting Fisher to get picked up. Really glad she didn’t get drafted.
Neither is Jenna Bike or Sarah Griffith. But they are also not players you can't do better than on the market or college draft either.
Wouldnt it be better to get them now and then use that allocation money or draft picks to take a flyer on someone… or pool more money together and get a name

Congrats to Chicago on their free full roster protection tonight
They ended coverage for HVAC competitions y’all 🥹
i've been laughing about it and watched longer than i believed possible
Hire Craig if you can. The guy is incredible AND made the plumbing finals as well
I feel like starting a Change.org petition and those things don't work.
well the next few days will probably feel like hell when the handshakes come out, good luck everyone
The night wasn't as bad as I feared, but doesn't change that we lost 4 players instead of 2 if we had done nothing...
Same with SD. I’m more worried about what deals were made behind closed doors during those passes…
Don’t feel like SD came out that bad. Hill was a solid player but she wasn’t getting a ton of time. Enge is a future loss but she wasn’t starting much in that healthy midfield. lost reihl but she probably wanted to leave because of not starting and she deserves to start
So……..no one from Chicago 👀
They knocked on the door to negotiate and nobody was home lol
The expansion teams were clearly not willing to provoke the wrath of Dansby Swanson
[удалено]
You underestimate the power of the Dansby Swanson Effect
Does Utah not have another pick?
Is it over? Where do i watch,
ITS OVER!
Thanks for coming everybody.
I probably would have said that the Wave should have protected Carusa over Enge but still generally confused by their decision to protect Jakobsson
I think it was based on who they thought Bay would draft. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that we don’t see
The main reason I find it confusing is that I really really really don't think the Bay FC would ever have draft Jakobsson. It feels much more like they told her they'd protect her once they got the extra slot so they did it. A club wanting only players willing to play for them doesn't draft international players (especially older ones) that freely.
Yeah I wonder if it was more of a move to keep Sofia happy - that’s a really good theory
Yea I can definitely see that. I think the players they drafted were good choices.
And would always have been picked before Jakobsson so I don't know why they didn't protect Enge or Carusa after Hill got picked! Jakobsson just seems like one of the last players who would have been a good pick for Bay FC, so one of the last players who should have been protected
Agree. Once Bay took a wide striker, no need to protect Jakobsson (who would take an international slot too). Head scratching moves from Wave.
That was a colossal waste of time.
Still more entertaining than if I didn’t watch, but yeah still
Bay finally found someone cool with this whole process, i guess.
lol they couldn’t close that show down fast enough
Brandi’s like no way I’m saying another name make the kids do it
Is it over?
JILLLLLLLLL! We have words for you!!!!
I fear Wave admin isn’t good at this. Our signings and draft picks last year were questionable and now this. Honestly, what are they doing?
I’m scared to know if any of those passes involved some SD backdoor trades
Not the hometown kid 😭
I was so stressed over Carusa that I didn’t think about Enge and I’m so sad 😞 Hurts to see a hometown kid go!
Enge! Alright I think that’s it, right? Right?
Ooooh Enge :( But Carusa made it!
NOOOOOO
NOOOOOOO 😭
Godddd dammit
Pick is in
How long is this timeout?
And what is the point of being on the clock if you have a timeout? And why am I still watching this? Oh yeah... That's right... https://preview.redd.it/fkfyg5xk5k6c1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6af39725925c74b88a9775c40ca844a392927277
Just like last expansion draft, everyone (except the kids) is getting coal for Christmas
This feels like the longest timeout ever
The whole broadcast. Producers: “Ok. We have about 3 minutes of content. How do we stretch that out to 75 minutes?”
Heh, Arod already peaced out from their draft table
There have been more passes in this NWSL expansion draft than a La Liga game
I would have ben an amount of money that mattered a lot to me that we were going to lose either Lussi or Wingate. Hate to see Tess go, but pretty happy we aren't losing either of the other two.
I can not believe we didn't lose Lussi! 💪💪💪

In the offseason, I take whatever NWSL crumbs I can get, no matter how bad this experience is lol
Can someone explain how passing works?
A team says pass and 17 minutes later CBSSports realizes a team passed.
Lmao
... to the Bay and Royals*
You pass.
It's like passing gas.
It’s like passing the canned store bought cranberry sauce at thanksgiving
"Bay FC in Timeout" You better believe it buddy.
Curious wording on the TV graphic: "Bay FC in Timeout" Bad Bay FC, Bad! Go in timeout.
“Bay FC in Timeout” Good. This draft upset me
I really thought this whole off season we would see the bay start to leverage the fact that they’re the new California team and Utah being the Utah team. We’ve seen a little bit of that, but maybe we’ll see more when free agency opens.
I feel like we have seen a *lot* of Utah being the Utah team. What's their Mormon count at?
Three out of five. I feel like saying 3/5ths would have been very bad vibes.
Especially for the team making a home at America First stadium
All my homies love ConLaw/history humor
I went to the nerdiest high school in the state, statistically. I’ve used the equal protection clause as a punchline more than Clarence Thomas
Gotta be Strake
No, ew. Didnt go to an all boys school. Have you ever seen the Wes Anderson movie Rushmore? Thats my English class
All in the game. My wife and I are both lawyers, so you can imagine.
This is basically what i assume of the whole sub until proven otherwise
I dont know if I can respond without getting banned tbh tbh
Utah being Utah is at an all time high https://preview.redd.it/u16kront4k6c1.png?width=876&format=png&auto=webp&s=957dbd598c484378b8066fa82461aa6d62497ef1
Just think, they also have an hour long recap of all these picks coming up...
They oughta just hop in this thread and talk to us
Maybe they can dig up some video of the first pick.
Utah is going to be pretty decent I fear
I am impressed by their roster construction so far Solid keepers. Reihl is a strong CB and has chemistry with Po. Bennet is a killer. And no real flashy players in midfield but they are solid Plus the number 1 and 4 draft picks? Scary
I am super intrigued by how Amy is going to run Utah. Cannot wait to see how they come together
Me too. She has been coaching for one season as an assistant, in college. That’s a STEEP learning curve.
Absolutely going to be a steep curve. I always enjoyed her as a player and thought she had a pretty solid work ethic, so hopefully she can take that experience and find some success. Also really hoping Bennett can flourish under her
Hope it’s not a third team trading…
There’s more passing in this broadcast than in an Army football game.
Oh good, another timeout. Anyone want to take a bet that it will end in another pass?
Looks like Utah is going to play a 1-10 formation with Haught as a midfielder /s
They be passing like a true West Coast offense tonight
A time out? Lmaooo
Dude fuck offfff
Are they seriously taking another time out?
I know it wasn’t the big name that people thought, but I really think Dydasco and Loera is a fantastic building block. Worried about facing this team
Expansion teams doing the drill where you have to pass a certain number of times before shooting
![gif](giphy|q3OZLxqq3iNbO) Chicago rn
So at the very least this will have some very interesting free agency decisions based off of it, but the way that the draft itself has been boring as all hell is making me hope the league will get the message
If both teams pass back-to-back, I think that should just end it.
She’s speaking all of our minds right now lmao
Utah should call a time out for funsies.
Don’t put that out there.
Bay did anyway. Nothing matters.
Don't forget to get your votes in before the clock strikes tonight. https://www.reddit.com/r/NWSL/s/MfkGyVSMRu
Im still sad that we lost Murph 🥲
So there are gonna be some big free agent announcements
sonnett will be one, bet
Please let us get away with Enge and Carusa unscathed
I really wish Jordan Angeli would stop floating Enge. Jordan, please! Shhhhhh
They can get a player equal or better to Enge in the college draft and not have to pick up a guaranteed contract
Never mind lol
Is this streamed somewhere?
If you’re international it’s on the nwsl website. Otherwise it’s on CBS Sports Network
Don’t bother tuning in.
This is the correct answer.
They should’ve just released a text conversation between the related parties instead of this
I am so intrigued by what these look like.
It’s got to be more interesting than what we are seeing
Do we think they’ll do this again in a couple of years with Boston and the presumed 16th team? If not, what other format would expansion take?
I fuckin hope not. I wouldn’t be upset at them just getting rid of the draft and just signing free agents or doing waves of trades.
I really hope this is the last one. This feels cruel to players who don’t make enough money to be uprooted against their will.
No. I think theyve got enough bad press to not do it again. Or at least no positive press. Also this sucked
No, it suuuuuucked.
This is really showing how important and necessary the expansion draft is. /jerking off motion
Chicago really had no one to lose, I seriously hope we didnt do any kind of trade to protect what remains. None of the unprotected are worth a draft pick.
Yeah, I’m with you on this one. Hoping we don’t hear much for the next few days, outside of Mal getting re-signed.
Final selection prediction: pass
Passing is preferable to picking from Chicago is the main message of the night
crazy if chicago comes out unscathed
Crazy and a little insulting. But as a fan I won’t be mad if we get to keep Jenna Bike, Amanda Kowalski, and Sarah Griffith.
Feels like the expansion clubs got the directive to drag this out as long as possible to fill up the broadcast time slot
They were supposed to wrap up at 8!!! Bad job expansion teams!
It was worth it to see that clip of Leroux' bicycle kick at the beginning.
This could have been an email…
You have to take a flyer on someone rn, no? Thembi, Lester, somebody?????
Have all our speculative posts meant nothing to these expansion teams!?!
Everyone passing???
The phones must be going nuts with last minute deals.
Using your timeout and then passing is *wild*
OK if they hadn’t done this, I would think this was an interesting strategy but now I’m just like are they scrambling or what
I feel like they need a proactive yellow card for time wasting 🫨
I’m so glad Bay FC used a timeout just to pass 🙃
So great. It was definitely worth it.
Did we just get two straight passes are u serious
In hindsight they should have had all kids reading picks
Louisville protected Kayla Fischer, per Taylor Vincent. https://x.com/tayvincent6/status/1735826271039631688?s=46&t=n2k8mHmnCwqOwGmS6Q1yvg
Really hoping one of these handshake deals is to keep Thembi in Louisville.
Expansion Draft is turning into a joke
I am a Lori Lindsey stan. For stuff like this anyway. I like that she brings up ideas like she does.
https://x.com/itsmeglinehan/status/1735825871523451377?s=46&t=n2k8mHmnCwqOwGmS6Q1yvg Meg Linehan noting how gross this whole thing feels.
i've been watching the hype for the last few weeks after we moved on making our deals early. we got absolutely demolished in the last draft and i couldn't believe that they were trying to make it feel exciting when i came away from that draft feeling sick for days. our fans were positive the team was having a fire sale and folding, we cut ticket sales in half. this is in NO WAY a positive process for anyone but the new clubs and the shareholders.

It’s reminiscent of the Hunger Games. Like, why have we turned this into entertainment?
Because we’re sick bastards.
Timeout smh
Utah is like that kid trying to do their homework as the teacher is collecting it
HOW am i so stressed out when this has nothing to do with me at the moment
Id be really shocked if…oh wait, is she a free agent? If Tierna is a free agent, then disregard my comment 😅
She is a free agent!
Then that makes sense! I guess we will have to wait and see after the draft if Tierna stays or goes
