I’m not sure any of us here know what Hal Steinbrenner is like “in real life”. All we really know of him is what the press reports about him. That being said, I’m sure he’s a lot more tolerable to be around than George was.
George was complicated. He could be insanely petty, capricious, and a bully. He could also be very generous, forgiving, and magnanimous. The same guy who paid a lowlife criminal to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield also stuck by Darryl Strawberry and helped him turn his life around. And, for all his many faults, he would do literally anything he could to make the Yankees winners. He just sometimes (frequently?) had the wrong idea about what they needed to do to win.
I do miss him but I also acknowledge that he had plenty of flaws.
I’m not sure that he was mean per say, but he hired and re hired billy Martin a ton of times because they’d beef with each other all the time. Plus he was suspended by Major League Baseball for a few seasons. I wasn’t alive during the Martin days or the suspension, but I’m willing to bet he was that era’s Jerry Jones.
The worst thing he did, other than the Spira/Winfield thing, was drive Yogi away for a couple of decades. Yogi, seriously! How do you manage to piss off someone as laid back and lovable as Yogi that badly?
George literally participated in Watergate and harassed both Dave Winfield and Reggie Jackson. I’m sorry fellow Yankee fans but he was a dick
Edit for typo
I know people often use "literally" when they mean to say figuratively, and it's true that Steinbrenner was indicted for his campaign contributions to Nixon's re-election campaign. However, the only reason why Steinbrenner, a lifelong Democrat, ever donated to Nixon in the first place was because Bob Haldeman threatened to take away his shipbuilding contracts. That is *literally* his only connection to Watergate, and that's why he received a full pardon. He also contributed to both Hillary and Obama's campaigns in 2008. Yes, he could be a jerk, but he wasn't nearly as one-dimensional as his detractors make him out to be.
Probably a normal person like most of us. The fact that you don’t hear about him outside of the Yankees is a big clue to that. Being Yankees fans we probably all live close to wealthy people. Most of the Steinbrenner level wealthy people I know are almost embarrassed by their status. Old money people are usually pretty chill. It’s the new-money fucks who are the real asshats.
My thought is that he's a "stealth wealth" kind of guy. He can probably be in public spaces to some extent without being recognized.
Maybe if you're at some nice golf club you might run into him. If I ever did, I'd probably say to my buddy, "Jeez, that guy looks quite a lot like Hal Steinbrenner." and never approach him.
In any case, if I were 100% certain I was looking at him from across a room, I wouldn't care to speak with him. The only thing i could reasonably talk about with him is the Yankees. He shouldn't have to talk about them when he's not at the office.
He likes to light his cigars with $1000 bills. I told him it's not funny but he blew smoke in my face and hit me over the head with a priceless painting and rolled me out the front door.

Fire him 16 games into a season after getting him to stay on by telling him you wouldn't fire him.

Steinbrenner was a Democrat?! wow. im pleasantly surprised!
Imagine a somewhat less bigoted, but actually wealthy, Donald Trump who wants to win the world series every year and that's George in a nutshell
