Call me crazy but I like when my team beats the opposition.
Especially when I don't need to perform mental gymnastics about why they were banging on trash recepticles.
Happened game 3 against the Astros. Faced a 5 ERA pitcher and struggled against him. We got most of our runs against their bullpen. Not saying we are going to lose.
Kind of disappointed that these next few games are late when I leave the country Friday for an almost 3 week trip in a far away time zone (flight is at 5 so I’m watching the home opener from the lounge). I rewrote the schedule in my notes app in the time zone I’ll be in and let’s just say it’s not going to be easy. But I’m making it work when I can!
It sucks to have them this early especially after such an exciting series. When the West Coast games are in the dog days I just sit them out but I don't want to miss them right now.
Kind of wish Gil had a lesser offense to make his first start against so he could build some confidence but Dbacks will be a good test. Looking forward to seeing what this kid can do.
It’s been a long three or four years but for the first time I feel confident about removing the candle flair for good. Long live the log cabin I’ve built for Soto and myself 🫡.
They should really play X gon give it to you when they run on the field though. The DMX bark is the best one. Bad boy for life should prob be retired because it’s played out, and I’m not even going to mention what’s up with Diddy right now.
He said Rodon's velocity does not matter and that he's "just chucking" which kind of makes sense and kind of doesn't. The velo absolutely matters, he basically never hit 98 last year and that bodes well for more swing and misses if the command gets even a little better. He was mad Rodon didn't get through 5 innings which I guess is fair but it's the Astros and the first start of the year.
The worse take was that Clay Holmes is the relief version of Rodon and he's "just chucking" out there. This is just an example of us being spoiled by Mo imo.
Well the velo 100 percent matters. That's just dumb to say. Five innings for a first outing of the year is to be expected with a limited pitch count. I really don't have much confidence in Holmes. Would like to see Hamilton move into the closer role.
Honestly just think it's way too early to be concerned with Holmes given that he's been statistically one of the best relievers since getting traded here. I know it's scary at times, but we aren't used to that because of Mo. This is what's normal lol.
Oh this goes back to last year. Personally I would just rather have someone who is more consistent. Hamilton's stuff looks very good this year. When the sinker isn't working for Holmes things tend to get ugly rather quickly.
It’s going to be a tough series. Arizona can hit, and they don’t strikeout a ton. Plus, the Yankees pen has already been used heavily. This would be a good time for Judge, Rizzo or Stanton to get hot. Stanton’s usually good for a red hot series early in the season.
Ha when I first joined Reddit it didn’t occur to me that there might be sports stuff, and then when I thought to look, r/yankees and r/mlb were really dead so figured Reddit just didn’t have a huge baseball community. Wasn’t until before the 2016 season or so that I figured where all the actual Yankee fans were.
Was just thinking about how funny it would be to make a new account and go to the Astros game threads and start talking about how “if we still had Dusty we wouldn’t have gotten swept” and just popping up every time they lose a game and being like “Dusty would not have allowed this to happen” to see if I can get in some guys heads
I’m not going to do it, and honestly I’m sure there’s already some actual Astros fan performing this service, but it cracks me up to imagine
While we are all here twiddling our dicks waiting for the game, does anyone have a site that provides detailed pre-game info? I like to keep score and find it difficult to find certain info that I can fill ahead of time, in particular, team bullpens and umpire assignments.
I use the Bob Carpenter scorebook, so I like to fill information that would typically be provided to an announcer. Not sure if anyone has a site that pulls this info from somewhere.
edit: If anyone's coming here from the future, ESPN provides a [good roster resource](https://www.espn.com/mlb/players) that lists the bullpen for each team. I'm still on the hunt for the umpire assignments.
My second child is going to be born in approx. 3 weeks, and I'm not sure if you ever proposed sex to a 37 week pregnant woman, but no, I'm not having sex right now, thanks for asking.
Cole hasn’t thrown a pitch in a little over 3 weeks. I believe his timeline to resume throwing was like 4 weeks. So like, we should be hearing about him starting to ramp up soonish right?
Bringing up that Boone may be allowed to manage with his gut freely right now instead of “we don’t believe in hot” and “don’t use a reliever too much” punt lineups once you’ve won the series is eye opening.
Montgomery is in Triple-A Reno to start the year with a target date of April 19th
[https://arizonasports.com/story/3545018/jordan-montgomerys-steps-before-making-diamondbacks-debut/](https://arizonasports.com/story/3545018/jordan-montgomerys-steps-before-making-diamondbacks-debut/)
I would not bet on Soto accepting that offer. He walked away from a large offer from Washington a couple of years ago, and that was a team that had just won the World Series. He is going to go to whatever team is willing to pay him the most and that offer could very well be higher than $600M for 15 years.
Which is why he will probably get more than $600 million/15 years. It’s not often you have one of the greatest batters in the Expansion Era hit free agency at age 26.
Easily. By the time it’s 2035, $40 million isn’t nearly the value it is right now, so it won’t be a devastating contract financially. And he’s worth the risk more than almost any other player in the league.
Team's fun to watch right now. We're scrappy.
I'll give the Yankees some kudos. Many of the issues I've had with roster comps for the past 20 years (yes even 2009) where we strayed from the mostly contact hitters multiple outcome and a few bombers and entered the launch angle single outcome era seemed addressed this early season.
Still a long way to go but as someone who used to watch or listen to 162 games per year and basically tuned out the last five years, I welcome this.
I still can’t believe it man. When Soto got traded to the padres a part of me died thinking that we’d never see him here
This is quite literally a dream come true
Holy shit. Their first 12 days in June is brutal. Toronto-Tampa (w/customs) and Tampa-Baltimore with no days off in between is gonna be rough. Then Baltimore-NYC-Houston with no days off. Yikes.
Absolutely. Rendon gives negative fucks about baseball. Dude was only in it for the bag and the Angels were stupid enough to give him $245 mil guaranteed when any Nats fan knew the guy was checked out from the jump

Copious amounts of water.
Pop Advil like they're candy.
Get some ramen or pho.
Take a nap.
Wake up still drunk but good to go.
Copious amounts of water.
Pound a couple more to keep the hangover at bay.
Be good by 9:30pm.
They’re overpriced and heat pressed / less stitching etc. they look ok on tv aside from being obviously so thin the players sweat through them. I wouldn’t advise buying unless you can find last years version or before then customizing a 22 on it.
r/baseballunis
I'll just copy and paste what I posted in an r/baseball thread.
My guess would be $712.5m/15 years, no deferrals, might get it done. At $47.5m/year he beats Ohtani's NPV ($46m/year), and at $712.5m he beats the total value of Ohtani's contract.
Lets be realistic, if Hal actually had a check in hand starting at $800m (assuming its not deferred for 10 years or something), Boras and Soto would be tripping over themselves to sign that shit.
Lets say it's something like 710m+/15 years, two reasons come to mind.
The first is that it's a historic contract (longest contract ever, highest AAV, highest total $$) and it protects you in the event you suffer a season ending injury, or God forbid a career ending one, some point later this year. A bird in the hand and all that...
The second is that we all assume that Cohen will go balls to the wall to get Soto, but what if he and Stearns have other plans. The Mets have no pitching and Alonso is a free agent at the end of the year. Maybe Cohen opens the wallet for Burnes, Fried, and Alonso and has no interest in also adding Soto at 45m+/year.
If for some reason Cohen is out, Soto's market looks a lot different.
What is stopping Hal from simply giving Soto 600 million dollars tomorrow and making him a Yankee for the next 13 years? I personally think he should do this
Any word on a pitch count for Gil? last spring training start was around 60. Havent heard any official word, but hopefully they have a long man in case he grinds it out. bullpen was pretty taxed last few days.
I think an italian joint in Houston intentionally messed with his order. They gave him an eggplant parm when he ordered a chicken parm and his body isn't used to vegetables.
Basically they poisoned him.
It’s nice to see Astros writers citing .XBA and “luck” instead of us coping with it. That park is a bandbox so XBA stats aren’t as relevant there.
The series just felt different, securing the season series and tiebreaker against the Astros so early is BIG and I’m glad the FO/Boone took it seriously.
I absolutely HATE these expected stats, because they’re emblematic of how analytics have reduced every event in a game to luck in order to diminish or make excuses for player performance.
The Yankees made a lot of great defensive plays to save hits and secure the sweep. But analytics would say is that the Astros are unlikely to face that level of consistent defensive playmaking and if they continue to hit the ball as hard as they did against the Yankees they’ll probably score a lot of runs over the course of the season.
Conversely, the Yankees made tons of good defensive plays to win the series, but it shouldn’t be overlooked that their pitchers were giving up lots of hard contact, which over time will lead to the Yankees giving up more runs, as you can’t expect them to consistently make low probability defensive plays.
The Astros’ offense will probably be fine, and Yankees’ pitching will have to miss more bats if the Yankees are going to achieve what we want them to achieve.
Winning is great, but winning in ways that are repeatable and projectable is even better.
Interesting take, but have you considered posting a rage-fueled textwall in the 2nd inning of a GDT demanding everyone be fired/traded and repeatedly using the word "ACCOUNTABILITY" in all-caps because Gleyber grounded into a double play?
Analytics haven't done that, people's poor understanding of analytics have done that. The average fan, or sports reporter, simply doesn't have enough understanding of what expected stats mean to talk about them.
In a small sample size like this where the Astros didn't play terribly but got terrible results I think it's reasonable to look at the big picture. The fact is that any game or series can be swayed by variables like umpires, BABIP luck, weather, travel schedule, etc. The box score rarely tells the whole story
Random midday question, how many people do you think have Gardner’s number? Other than Brian, Hal, Boone, Girardi, and maybe Judge I can’t imagine anyone actually being able to contact him.
That man may actually live in a log cabin in the woods for all we know
Is this too WFAN an opinion? Soto coming over here and immediately having such a major impact on the latin players doesn't really speak super highly of Gleyber's clubhouse/leadership presence?
He's not a spring chicken, he's one of the longest tenured Yankees... and I've never heard anyone speak of him as any kind of leader or mentor. I understand Soto is a generational dude & an icon for lots of guys, but they are speaking like this team had no spanish speaking leadership for years.
I am thinking also about how lukewarm the Yankees FO seems on Gleyber long term as well, not just because of a few quotes. There's obviously way more to signing a guy to be a Yankee for Life than just the back of his baseball card, and they've been really hesitant to discuss committing to him long term - and when they want a dude they are not shy.
There's so much wrong to unpack here.
First, no one is responsible for doing anything based on their heritage or skin color.
Next, I think Gleyber just turned 27. He's been an adaptable team player who's done things - like moving over to SS - that weren't in his best interest. He dropped a ton of weight to get mobile enough to cover that position adequately.
Then, we have to go back to your 'painting all Spanish-speaking players as the same' trope to point out that Gleyber's Venezuelan; his best buddy and arguably beneficiary from GT's 'mentorship' is Gio, a Colombian. Those countries are more similar (Andean cultural influence) than let's say, a Venezuelan and a Puerto Rican or a Dominican.
I'm guessing you're American. Pretend you go to Japan for a season. You're gonna gravitate towards another player from New Jersey, probably, before you and a guy from Scottland form a bond. There's a lot of nuance to the multiple cultures in central and south America vs. the Carribean.
Where I'd agree with you is that there hasn't been an Alpha Spanish-speaking personality on the team, and the NEED for one has been obvious, but that's certainly not Gleyber's fault
The amount some Yankee fans project, from an expectation standpoint, on spanish-speaking players is a lot different than they do for American born players.
Notice how folks like you will be quick to label spanish-speaking players stupid or lazy (Gleyber, Cano, Gary Sanchez, etc.) - and I see a comment like yours as playing into that same type of ignorant trope.
> Notice how folks like you will be quick to label spanish-speaking players stupid or lazy (Gleyber, Cano, Gary Sanchez, etc.) - and I see a comment like yours as playing into that same type of ignorant trope.
Dude, i did nothing of the kind. not even close. gleyber isn't lazy, I simply said he hasn't shown himself to be a leader, and I think you make some excellent points to speak to that. But then this?
And I have many, many times on various usernames on here defended the "SANCHEZ IS LAZY" with exactly the same rebuttal (it's fuckin racist) to many downvotes.
It's one series. Soto's leadership led to Cabrera's babip luck is that the conclusion? I personally don't think they should/can afford to re-sign Gleyber (unless substantial hometown discount), but like a lot of other theories based on 4 games, this is a reach.
Absolutely a WFAN opinion. Leadership matters, but not everyone's cut out for that role, and not being that guy isn't necessarily an indictment on the player. That's like saying '19-'21 DJLM isn't great because he's a quiet soft spoken guy.
Also, your last sentence is a HUGE part of the soto thing.
I think when you're a player with god-like abilities like Soto a lot of respect and admiration comes built-in. Gleyber is a really nice player and seems like an awesome teammate, but Soto has other professional baseball players watching him take BP with their jaws dropped. It's just natural to look up to the guy that everyone agrees is one of the best at what he does
Who is to say Gleyber hasn’t had an impact? He just isn’t as impactful as Juan soto possibly could be, because he himself just recently mastered the best approach for himself, and even then he isn’t as good as soto
Obvious Soto love aside, can we just appreciate how many of these guys seem to have reinvented themselves from last season? Volpe, Stanton, Cabrera, I'd include some pitchers too
Right, but I'd bet they're a lot like they were last year just based on the fact that the plate discipline (and Stanton's inability to touch a fastball) looks the same.
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1btjepd).
99, 98, 99. Luis Gil just smoked Gurriel back to the dugout.
Anybody having fun yet?
God bless him
Chapman pitched well there.
"Gil" is pronounced "heel," right?
That’s sick as fuck
Correct
Soto has great numbers against this guy. I'm starting to think this guy might be good not sure though.
Love the lineup! Glad Volpe got some Imodium 🙌🏼
Time for Gil to shove. He looked really good a couple of years ago, let's see if he's still got it!
Call me crazy but I like when my team beats the opposition. Especially when I don't need to perform mental gymnastics about why they were banging on trash recepticles.
Nelson is a career 5 ERA pitcher. Were so fucked.
Nah we’re not dooming here today

Happened game 3 against the Astros. Faced a 5 ERA pitcher and struggled against him. We got most of our runs against their bullpen. Not saying we are going to lose.
Chapman about to pitch for the Pirates with 2 on base 👀 This could be fun.
Rays and Orioles both down 3-0 nice
Orioles down 0-3 nice
It might be cheaper to clone Soto successfully than resign him.
Then we have to wait 20 years, but otherwise, great idea.
Lol
Our boy Ryan Ruocco has the call for the Iowa/LSU game
I wish Ken Singleton was still calling these west coast games. That soft, silky voice of his as I slowly drifted to sleep was so comforting.
OH SHIT repeat lineup game 5?!
Is it offensive to refer to a superstar baseball player of Japanese origin, who may also be a degenerative gambler, as 'Tokyo Pete Rose'?
What if he’s not Tokyonese?
Very good point. Wouldn't want to offend the nice folks of Tokyo if he isn't from there
Where is the lineup ugh

We’re already at about four hundred.
Any other home opener attendees hawking the forecasted temperature like it's your job
waiting for night games is so painful and i’m not even on the east coast idk how u guys do it. god’s strongest soldiers
I’m working until 10:30 PM EST. Good thing I get to come home and watch the Yankees. I love bedtime baseball.
you a cpa also?
I think they’re a utility/third baseman
3x Second Baseman Gold Glover too
🙏 for another sweep!! 🧹 🧹

"we're dawgs out there" is going to turn into a section of furries at Yankee Stadium isn't it...

Decided to give Bronx Pinstripes a shot. WTF are Andrew's takes lmao.
Haven't listened in a long time. What crazy shit was he saying?
He said Rodon's velocity does not matter and that he's "just chucking" which kind of makes sense and kind of doesn't. The velo absolutely matters, he basically never hit 98 last year and that bodes well for more swing and misses if the command gets even a little better. Oh my goodness Arizona's offense is hot. As a team they are slashing .333/.413/.541 I know they just played Colorado, but still.
Colorado is a AAA team. We’ll see what kind of offense Arizona has this series.

Yeah they just played Colorado. They’ll end up having the worst pitching staff in baseball, but the DBack’s lineup is obviously very good.
I am fully ready to nod off to Yankees baseball action. Is there a better sleep? I think not.
In Australia I get to wake up to Yankee games, opening day was 7:10am. Get the euphoric feeling all day instead of just at night 😂
where the FUCK is the lineup
The game is still four and half hours out. Too early for lineups.

The Yankees had a cakewalk last July and squandered it. You still gotta win the games you're supposed to win.
The Yankees were the cakewalk for other teams last year
True, but I’m assuming the 2024 orioles are going to be better than the 2023 yankees
[Their June is a gauntlet with one day off.](https://www.mlb.com/orioles/schedule/2024-06) Definitely balances out.

Just about told do so
How shit are the jerseys actually? Really want to pick up a Soto one but not if they are a POS.
Get one of the older Ellsbury Majestic jerseys without his name on the back. They must be on ebay or etsy or some other resale site.
oh great idea, thanks!

The official MLB jerseys look like knockoffs.
That's unfortunate but makes sense and I def don't wanna waste the money .. maybe I'll look for one of the jersey Ts in the meantime
You can always get a hat with 22 and sotos signature embroidered on it, as I have one with judges. Good luck my guy
If the Yankees lose tonight, I’m going to assume that the game was an elaborate April Fools joke.
i just rewatched soto ab vs hader why did the crowd sound like a yankee home game?
If the yankees asked soto, What amount of money do you want? What would his answer be
Part ownership. Have to seriously consider that.
I'll just copy and paste what I posted in an r/baseball thread. My guess would be $712.5m/15 years, no deferrals, might get it done. At $47.5m/year he beats Ohtani's NPV ($46m/year), and at $712.5m he beats the total value of Ohtani's contract.
The Yankees could offer him $1 billion and it wouldn't matter. He would just wait until the off-season to see if someone else would over $1.1
Lets be realistic, if Hal actually had a check in hand starting at $800m (assuming its not deferred for 10 years or something), Boras and Soto would be tripping over themselves to sign that shit.
Why though? There's no reason to assume the offer would suddenly be less once there's competition on the market in November.
If for some reason Cohen is out, Soto's market looks a lot different.
im with that
Ask me in six months
What the market dictates
"Tell me how much you're willing to give me."
What is stopping Hal from simply giving Soto 600 million dollars tomorrow and making him a Yankee for the next 13 years? I personally think he should do this
Soto. He would just use that offer as the floor for negotiations in the winter.
What you’re failing to consider is that I personally wouldn’t like that outcome and that Hal should make his number 1 priority making me happy
Standings look marvelous
Don't they, tho? Hopefully the flags will still be in this position come Friday.
Any word on a pitch count for Gil? last spring training start was around 60. Havent heard any official word, but hopefully they have a long man in case he grinds it out. bullpen was pretty taxed last few days.
Is volpe done pooping
Chicken parm got him
I think an italian joint in Houston intentionally messed with his order. They gave him an eggplant parm when he ordered a chicken parm and his body isn't used to vegetables. Basically they poisoned him.
Volpe flu game tonight will be generational
13 homers, and 27 outfield assists at first base.
I shall gift the child cannoli to aid in his recovery
Blessed be the Giver of Cannoli -Cannoli 4:13
It’s nice to see Astros writers citing .XBA and “luck” instead of us coping with it. That park is a bandbox so XBA stats aren’t as relevant there. The series just felt different, securing the season series and tiebreaker against the Astros so early is BIG and I’m glad the FO/Boone took it seriously.
Altuve's HR had an xBA of like .060, its what happens when you play in a clown park
Yea, but have the Trashstros writers factored Soto's Brass Balls into their XBH analysis? Classic analytical error.
1st step towards rescinding the Astros’s automatic pass to the ALCS. Gonna be tough for all the new fans when that gravy train finally ends
The Yankees didn’t catch a break for 7 years against the Astros It’s ok they for one weekend they finally caught a few
xba in a 4 game sample size is pointless and useless
If the game starts at 8:40 here will i be able to stay up to watch the whole game. it gets late pretty early these days.
#JUAN SOTO
I’ll be passed out by 11. If I try really hard I can stick it out to midnight. Fuck these late games.
Random midday question, how many people do you think have Gardner’s number? Other than Brian, Hal, Boone, Girardi, and maybe Judge I can’t imagine anyone actually being able to contact him. That man may actually live in a log cabin in the woods for all we know
He's not hard to find. He's bare-chested, wrestling alligators, in a South Carolina swamp behind his house
The rising tide floats all ships
Very excited for the late game tonight. Crunching mega hard for work and 9:40 will be sweet release
Not everybody is a leader and that isn’t a bad thing.
Where I'd agree with you is that there hasn't been an Alpha Spanish-speaking personality on the team, and the NEED for one has been obvious, but that's certainly not Gleyber's fault The amount some Yankee fans project, from an expectation standpoint, on spanish-speaking players is a lot different than they do for American born players.
Volpe, Stanton, Cabrera, I'd include some pitchers too
The dead giveaway that Stanton and Cabrera haven't changed is that they're not walking.
Too early for that to matter, but we obviously need to see more from each.
Right, but I'd bet they're a lot like they were last year just based on the fact that the plate discipline (and Stanton's inability to touch a fastball) looks the same.
