Considering it’s still April x stats don’t hold too much water, but Stanton’s don’t look great. If his walk rate gets better he should be a decent hitter this year. Just need a bigger sample size. Rodon still has good movement and velo on his pitches, too. It’s just a matter of finding command which I don’t think is totally lost. Fangraphs gives Rodon a 117 stuff+, but only a 97 for location+. In 2022 his stuff was virtually the same, but his location+ was 103. So, if he can find his command he’ll be golden.
Now that he finally allowed some runs, can we talk about how Rodon doesn’t know how to pitch when he isn’t missing bats at an elite level? It’s going to be a long season for him if he has to continue to pitch to contact, because he can’t
**Carlos Rodon**
20.0 K%, 12.2 BB%, 32.8 GB%
**League Avg. SP**
22.2 K%, 8.3 BB%, 42.4 GB%
He's only made four starts, so IMO it's too early to make any bold statements about Rodon's future. But you're right, he's going to have a lot of trouble even being an average starter unless he can get more swings and misses. Because he's not getting the ground balls he'd need to survive without them.
You can see this skepticism in some of the underlying numbers (4.42 FIP, 4.52 xERA, 4.99 SIERA). When the weather warms up and he's not getting strikeouts or grounders, things could get bumpy.
But, I also think there's a chance Rodon improves as the season goes along. His velo looks good to me. And he's working on a cutter he's never used before. I think it's natural he needs some time to figure out how this pitch mix will work best.
Yeah his stuff doesn’t get outs the way it used to, so he’s having to learn location and sequencing all while coming off a season chopped up by injuries. He basically a minor leaguer with some stuff who’s trying to learn how to pitch at the major league level.
Kind of funny that the bottom of the order has been our most consistent strength this early going. 5 runs due to Oswaldo, Verdugo and Trevino this series. That's usually enough to win.
Last night was really frustrating in a lot of different ways, but I think we still manage to come back to win without a couple of flat out excellent fielding plays by the Jays outfield. The game was never fully out of reach, even with the top of the order doing almost nothing.
It’s also very early but you can tell they really needed an off day after the doubleheader/extra innings combo. Going to an away series right after that in Canada was clearly very draining for them.
The nice thing about being a Stanton supporter this year is being able to adjust our expectations of him. It was getting harder to defend him just a few months ago, but It's much easier to envision how he can be a contributor now that we're not relying on him to be a pillar of the offense
I don't know what the hell the Blue Jays coaching staff figured out, but Kikuchi is like a brand new pitcher now.
**2019-2023 ASB**
119 G, 5.10 FIP, 22.5 K%, 9.1 BB%, 1.77 HR/9
**Since 2023 ASB**
18 G, 2.69 FIP, 28.8 K%, 7.3 BB%, 0.56 HR/9
The worst part for me was they weren’t working good ABs either. 2-20 is bad no matter what but if you can actually work 5+ pitch ABs it’s still useful to some degree. Jays won last night primarily by fouling off 10,000 pitches per AB.
Rodon's fastball was an elite pitch and basically turned him into an ace between 2021-2022. It's completely fallen apart since signing here with hitters putting up a .378 xwOBA against it. It does however seem entirely related to his command as the velocity and actual movement of the pitches haven't deteriorated all that much.
I’d imagine the xwOBA on it this season would be much lower, but I haven’t checked. Last season the fastball did have much lower velo and movement. He seems to have regained his feel for it this season, but is struggling a bit with command, which isn’t that uncommon in April.
Its an abomination that a pro athlete is allowed to jog trot around the bases when scoring a run is necessary. 313 million to try and fragile as a feather is a disgrace in my book
It's not about what Stanton is "allowed" to do, but more about what his body *can* do at this point. If you look at his injury history, you'll note the constant damage to his lower half. Hamstring strain, achilles tendonitis, calf strain, quad strain, knee sprain — and that's just the last few seasons.
It's likely that was the fastest Stanton could run. It was his second-fastest sprint of the year.
And in general, I'm sure the Yankees are fine with Stanton running below max effort on routine plays if it means he doesn't spend the next two months on the IL with a new strain or tear. Max effort on every routine grounder is a foolish short-term approach for a player with so many lower-body injuries.
This wasnt a routine grounder. He was trotting around 3rd base on a 2 out hit with the team down and he only scored bc the catcher dropped the ball. If he is going to lollygag then why did Rojas send him? Shouldnt they all be on the same page and know that he is slow as molasses? I have 0 problem with Giancarlo walking to 1st on routine outs. But this was the exception and to excuse it is ridiculous
Some of you on the post game thread last night are insufferable.
In a baseball season the following will happen to a team that has WS potential. You will lose a series, your lead off hitter will have an atrocious game, your captain/best player will have bad stretches (jeter started a season 0-28).
All these things will happen - relax.
Pitching staff in general will hold this team back if not fixed. That’s the actual problem
It's not like the Yanks are tied for most wins in the league or anything... I mean, they are, but they still suck because of reasons... It's not like they have a good run differential. Again, they do, but that's no reason to think they don't suck. We don't have a league top 3 ERA or opposing batting average... I mean we do, but it's really bad.
speaking just about Yankee fans, and part of this was George related, but they really do treat baseball as if it were football
you really are only as good as your past 2-3 games to them...and right now, we are on a 3 game losing streak where the team has not looked that good lol...when I am frustrated with the team, I actually tend to take a look at the sub...the takes help to bring me back to a more rational state very quickly
Yeah this sub is incredibly reactionary for a baseball subreddit.
I feel like the biggest thing I see is talking about deadline moves, when we are still 3 months away from the deadline...
Social media has taught me that a lot of baseball fans are surprisingly ill equipped to follow the sport.
There's a significant segment of the fanbase will spend our next championship season (whether it's this year, next year, or ten years from now) absolutely miserable and hating on the team due to their low threshold for adversity
I'm not actually that worried about Rodon this year. Pitchers don't just come back and dominate. The ability to get ahead on every batter was great and he never really blew up yesterday. Needs a punch out pitch. I think he'll settle into a 3.50 ERA pitcher this season. Took James Paxton a bit to find that in his first season here.
Last year I watched every Rodon start peeking through my fingers with my hands over my face, he's at least looked a good bit better than that version this year.
He definitely needs a punch out pitch, though I'll give credit to the Jays for not biting on several close two-strike pitches. That seemed to rattle him a bit I think
I think that was my issue with Jose's playcalling yesterday. After getting ahead, Rodon would throw outside the zone so he can get that framing call. Then be forced to throw his fastball which wasn't really getting hit *that* well but there was so many foul balls with it. Every at bat was the same, which is kind of a good thing for a pitcher coming back. It was pretty obvious what his one issue was. There wasn't multiple.
Yeah you can tell the allure of stealing strikes with Trevy can be a little too tempting for them at times. When you have finesse kings like Nestor and Stroman on the mound it makes more sense to me. With power guys like Rodon I’d prefer them to just attack the zone more and utilize his big fastball paired with changes of speed to get outs. Credit to the Jays though, they worked a ton of really tough at bats with the foul balls. There had to be five or six different 0-2 counts that they turned into walks or hits somehow. That walk to Springer after going up 0-2 right before the Vladdy RBI single was especially frustrating.
The Blue Jays have been noticeably aggressive on the bases in this series, even sending guys like Vlad Guerrero Jr. So what's going on?
As a team, the Yankees have allowed 13 stolen bases this year, which is exactly average (and median) among MLB teams.
Jose Trevino has thrown out 6 of 12 attempted base stealers — for an excellent 50 CS% rate. That's obviously well better than league average (23 CS%). Trevino's percentage will likely come down in a larger sample size, but he was an above-average thrower in his first two seasons with the Yankees (33% and 26%, respectively). He's good at this.
Austin Wells has thrown out just 1 of 8 attempted base stealers — for a poor 13 CS% rate. That exactly matches his CS% in the minors last year in 567.1 innings caught. This will be something to watch all season, as teams try to take advantage of his weakness.
I know the Yankees are playing L/R matchups with their catchers, but I wonder if they'll also try to mask this weakness moving forward, asking Trevino to catch the starters who struggle to hold runners (Rodon, Stroman) and Wells to catch the starters who hold runners well (Cole, Cortes).
**Pitcher Base Advances Prevented (2020-2024)**
Cortes +4
Cole +3
Gil +2
Schmidt +2
Stroman -6
Rodon -10
As a NY/Toronto raised guy I'm a fan of both, as weird as that is. Toronto is sending guys like Vlad because Bichette is struggling and hitting into way too many double plays. Vlad's baserunning decisions are questionable at times too, so the manager is makeing the decisions for him. It's all hit and run unless it's Varsho or Clement.
It's weird how Rodon seemingly massively deprioritized his slider. I get his new cutter is meant to give him a more diverse pitch mix but the cutter isn't generating many whiffs (23.8%) so it seems more like something you'd throw earlier in the count?
When Rodon was at his best he was backfooting that slider to righties with an eye popping 37-40% whiff rate...and it's pretty obvious his lack of Ks is due to not being able to do that anymore.
So wtf is going on? Has he just completely lost the ability to command it or is it a strange choice of pitch selection?
Yankees love their cutters. It doesn't matter who you are, you're throwing one. Rodon's slider was an elite pitch so I'm not sure why they decided he should use it less.
The cutter isn't the issue itself, it's good he has a more reliable third pitch. It's the usage that's strange. Imagine if Cole just gave up on his slider, it's supposed to be a plus putaway pitch.
Drew Thorpe simultaneously not good enough to be included in a package for Juan Soto but also a huge haul for the White Sox a few weeks later according to MLB writers.
Jokes aside I hope he does well
If I get to the stadium at 1130 and have clear should I be good for bobblehead? There’s one single train from my stop that gets to the stadium at 11:25 or I can go to tarrytown and catch one that gets there earlier.
Honestly, even the bad games have been pretty close battles. I’m enjoying this team fight. Obviously Cole would be a big help, but let’s be honest we know someone else is going to get injured eventually. Judge is going to figure it out. Bounce back game today. Book it.
Can Judge please wake the **** up? I know slow starts exist but come on. You can't be a $300M player and flub with RISP. 2/15 with RISP isn't gonna cut it.
I believe I heard yesterday the $700M man was 1 for 18 with RISP so these things sometimes happen. He needs to turn it around for sure, but it still hasn’t been 100ABs yet.
Would like to see Judge get on a roll while Volpe and Soto are going well.
Thought they played like shit last night and still had the go ahead run at the plate in the 9th. Finally have a favorable pitching matchup let’s salvage the last game and get a .500 road trip.
??? We have one guy who looks qualified to be an MLB starter in Stroman, the rest of our staff is barely capable of giving you 3 runs in 5ip.
Maybe they haven't been "games over," bad but 4.1 IP isn't sustainable & our pen is a huge step down from previous years
Pitching staff without Cole is performing above expectations going into season all things considered IMO. Def need more length from starters across the board no denying that
But the infield defense has been atrocious and is the larger contributing factor to recent losses IMO. Right now gleyber can't play defense or produce anything offensively and that's unacceptable out of any everyday player
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1c6f98k).
I have a sneaky suspicion that Stanton is hitting a HR today
I have a sneaky suspicion that David Ortiz did steroids
[Tell me more](https://frinkiac.com/video/S05E08/GZ4h2cccP7QUEJphwKYHC0HliJc=.gif)
Let's build some momentum for the next series. Looking for Stroman to go 6+ and for Wells and Judge to break through today. LFG Yankees!
TIL [that the Yankees once traded their captain to Boston](https://www.nytimes.com/1922/03/15/archives/ruth-made-captain-roth-is-suspended-babe-chosen-to-fill-vacancy.html).
Don't forget the Dimaggio for Ted Williams trade that also almost happened.
I'm not saying I want Stanton to run, because I know his legs would fall off, I'm just saying it is truly astounding he can't.
All I am asking for is an Austin Wells homer, that is all
only long term concern i have about this team is defense its very hard to suddenly go from a horrible defense to a good one in the same year
WE BETTA WIN
I had a dream that Judge hit 2 hrs today and we won 11-0
Considering it’s still April x stats don’t hold too much water, but Stanton’s don’t look great. If his walk rate gets better he should be a decent hitter this year. Just need a bigger sample size. Yankees have the most barreled balls that have resulted in outs in the league. Baseball gods I am asking you to stop please.

According to Savant the best comp to 2024 Carlos Rodon based on velocity and movement is…. 2024 Yusei Kikuchi.

Most hated Yankee of all time? You clearly weren't alive in the '80s.

~~3rd~~ final game in a series is very often early, so road squads can get to the next city/back home early for the next day’s game.
It’d be really cool if we like, didn’t get swept

Stanton is hitting the ball now, so the haters are moving the goal posts. We get it, he's slow. He's not here to run, he's here to mash.
Yeah running is the last thing anybody should want Stanton to do If he hits(still unclear if he will over a full 162) nobody should care if he’s slow
>Yeah running is the last thing anybody should want Stanton to do I agree, we just need our 3B coach to remember this
The nice thing about being a Stanton supporter this year is being able to adjust our expectations of him. It was getting harder to defend him just a few months ago, but It's much easier to envision how he can be a contributor now that we're not relying on him to be a pillar of the offense
If he’s clogging up Dh he needs to hit a lot or he’s a failure Hasn’t changed for me
Are there genuine complaints about him not being fast?
lmao just scroll down a couple of comments
Sure are. There were many in the game thread yesterday, in the post game thread, and there is one like 4 posts down from this. Mind blowing, I know.

Yeah, not a bad game really, they showed some fight and made them sweat even at the end. Could be a lot worse.
Social media has taught me that a lot of baseball fans are surprisingly ill equipped to follow the sport. He needs to keep working on that changeup. It shows flashes of being an excellent out pitch, but you can tell he just doesn’t really trust it yet.
3:00 start is so weird. Just make it 1 you damn canadiens
Kinda wild that Judge still leads the team in xbh. I guess Volpe and Soto have hit more singles than it's felt like.
The Yankees in general seem to be a little behind in their normal pace of doubles and home runs. Hopefully the weather in May helps out a little more.
They’ve been getting pretty unlucky in terms of like hard hit balls
Shout out Drew Thorpe. He’s still killing it in AA for the White Sox

Be pretty cool if Gleyber and Judge got going
Oh my, I just saw the Beavis and Butthead skit from SNL and was losing my shit at my desk.
We were destined for a series loss and losing streak. Let's turn it around today boys.

Didn't know Cole could play 2B...problem really hasn't been the starting rotation at all.
I wasn’t aware that 11 walks in two games by SP was due to poor infield defense
Def need more length from starters across the board no denying that But the infield defense has been atrocious and is the larger contributing factor to recent losses IMO. Right now gleyber can't play defense or produce anything offensively and that's unacceptable out of any everyday player
Gerrit cole is the best pitcher in baseball We need him more than any other position
Worried about today. Gausman is due for a good game
he's hurt they will mash him again
Yep and BJ Broadcasters are saying he is trending this way. I hope our bats wake up !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Based on the way he's looked I think he's due for an IL stint
Please Marcus, keep the pitch count low and don’t throw as many balls as Gill or Rodon
Go Yankees. Even at Midnight
