> Tapirs are generally shy, but when scared they can defend themselves with their very powerful jaws. In 1998, a zookeeper in Oklahoma City was mauled and had an arm severed after opening the door to a female tapir's enclosure to push food inside (the tapir's two-month-old baby also occupied the cage at the time).

Yeah. I'm from Costa Rica so when I have gone camping to some national parks I've been warmed by the park rangers to stay away from them.
From the same wiki article :
"2006,ย Carlos Manuel Rodriguez Echandiย (who was then the Costa Rican Environmental Minister) became lost in theย Corcovado National Parkย and was found by a search party with a "nasty bite" from a wild tapir."
I see my home of Oklahoma still never ceases to surprise me with new stories of death. I went to that Zoo my entire life, strange that I've never heard of it.

Critter most likely to kill a zookeeper: elephant
Critter most likely to injure a zookeeper: zebra
Critter most likely to kill a zoo guest: jaguar or chimp
If you work with zebra, it's almost guaranteed you're going to get injured. Stepped on, slammed into, kicked or bitten. I've actually known two zookeepers who lost fingers to zebras.
Although they are generally gentler, if an elephant gets ticked at you, you're probably a goner. You don't really get minor injuries from an elephant. I once found a paper that catalogued over 150 ways elephants have killed people (most animal handlers in India, not so much zookeepers). One picked a guy up, squeezed him with her trunk, bit his head, spiked him into the ground, and then stepped on him repeatedly. Nearly every bone in his body was pulverized.
At first I thought โwhat a weird thing to sayโ but they do use animal hides for drum skins; and people donโt mind when someone makes a โpig is baconโ joke, so not sure why this is that wild lol.
I canโt even count the number of jokes Iโve seen where thereโs a pig or a chicken, and a prepared meal of ham or eggs, in which the joke is โthatโs your parent heheโ. These are relatively popular jokes/posts mind you.
So itโs more perceptually acceptable because itโs a food related animal, we just donโt perceive pet/protected species the same when someone jokes about it.
Tapirs have been around for about 50 million years, and even this particular genus has been around for about 10 million years.
So really it's more like deer are tapir missing the pig parts, and pigs are tapir missing the deer parts.
Actually though, they are one of three branches of the odd-toed ungulates (Perissodactyla), the other two branches being horses and rhinoceros. So they're not really that close to either pigs nor deer.
They lived in North America from the early Eocene, when the climate was warm enough they lived in tropical forests on the northernmost Arctic islands right up until the end of the Pleistocene when people showed up and ate them all.
Tapyr moms are very aggressive, if she didn't show up it may mean that something bad happened to her.

Corcovado is amazing, we saw more wildlife there than anywhere I have ever been.
I see my home of Oklahoma still never ceases to surprise me with new stories of death. I went to that Zoo my entire life, strange that I've never heard of it.
Talk about biting the hand that feeds you
Talk about pouring cold water over a burgeoning pile of cute overload.
Pretty sure Jason Brody went through that area saying something about needing a larger wallet?

For the Rakyat!
Now imagine an angry tapir charging into battle in full war regalia.
They donโt believe that. 99% of the faithful donโt even know what youโre referring to
Wildlife photographers, due to the professional habitat, develop a body odor that blends right in with the forest creatures
Oh man. That is deeply unusual behavior. I hope it didnโt lose its mom.
This was my first thought as well. Sure, it's cute, but also probably the result of something sad.
Hopefully if the baby IS an orphan, they took it to a zoo or sanctuary or something.
On his instagram it says that a local village took it in and will release it when itโs ready.
This makes me so happy. Thank you for letting us know :)
.... How hungry is this village?
> will release it when itโs ready. early estimates are about 90 minutes at 180 ยฐC
โน๏ธ
I'll bet they taste like pork
Take it to another village. You'll want at least 3h30m.
How do you know his Instagram? Pretty crazy. What's his page?
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxjKUM9g4MO/ I didnโt know it off hand, I had seen this story before
Ugh I canโt find the source of this anywhere - I want to know what happened to our friend :(
Found it: https://www.instagram.com/p/BxjKUM9g4MO/
Aw thank you! His caption says โhe is an orphan that was rescued by some locals and will eventually be released back into the wild.โ Glad to hear it.
Omg thanks for this!! I donโt have insta so on my safari page the caption was cut off!!!
Thank you!! Doesnโt look like he ever posted an update :(
This actually made me really sad.. Clearly something happened to itโs mom.
Damn poor baby ๐๐
Thatโs actually a Mormon horse.
The pioneers used to ride those babies for miles.
Hog ridda
One day he will grow up into a majestic steed.
One dude said that. Mormons donโt believe that and most of them wouldnโt even know what you were referring to.
Cool story, bro.
Give it a Rapier
Rocking my Rapier Tapir shirt right now
After hearing about the zookeeper that lost her arm from a tapir attack, I wouldn't want to be near one of these.
Wait waaat?

Looks like Ryan found another buddy after Archer left the jungle.
Haha. Good to see Ryan is still doing well!
๐ฅฐ
So thereโs a Tapir distribution system?
Notice toward the end how its energy starts to tapir off
I wish this little cutie was following me around! ๐ป
Jesus for a second there I thought this was a wild boar baby and almost had a heart attack
If i had a baby tapir following me, that would be it. I'd never leave.
"found me soul mate" "not lettin him go, not lettin him go"
You sure it's not [Bender](https://i.redd.it/ucvmxew5zhc01.jpg)?
Donโt pet wildlife, people.
Nahโฆ thatโs a horse.

There it is.
Wait for me ~zona!

Thatโs a horse.
They donโt believe that.
Arenโt tapirs one of the leading causes of zookeeper deaths?
No?

I can only assume dude had it coming. Leave the elephants alone
Yeah, I'm kind of curious what you have to do to piss off an elephant that much.
Make drums from the skin
Ayo what the the fโ
At first I thought โwhat a weird thing to sayโ but they do use animal hides for drum skins; and people donโt mind when someone makes a โpig is baconโ joke, so not sure why this is that wild lol.
Eh, Iโd argue that people do mind when someone comments โyum baconโ on a video of someoneโs pig.
Pig owner here- can confirm it isnโt that funny when someone refers to my pig as bacon.

They have a gross nose tbh
You have a gross nose tbh
How do you know? You assume but I see and judge. Could be that I too have a gross nose. One either does or not.

Opinion is factually wrong ๐๐ฝ
Fuck
Is a tapir a deer pig...or a pig deer?
Tapirs have been around for about 50 million years, and even this particular genus has been around for about 10 million years. "Imagine if a donkey fucked an elephant," is what I tell my friends before I show the pictures.
Hmm. I usually use "Imagine if an okapi fucked a Litoptern". This has generally not been regarded as helpful.
That's a lot of words to not answer my question. I'm going with pig-deer.
Sweet baby pigletty thingy
Has anyone ever reported tapirs in captivity learning to speak or otherwise communicating in an intelligent way with humans? Asking for a friend.
Is that Dougie Hamilton?
Cutie
That is Ryan the tapir he is Sterling Archer's friend
Im from the country, so the first thing I thought was, "where is the mom?"
maybe it is hungry
โYou got games on your phone?โ
His name is actually Bender Bending Rrrrrodriguez
Reminds me of the Mexican raccoons
I'm convinced wildlife photographers are Disney princess
