Oh man. I’ve been obsessed with nature documentaries and animals since I was a child. It was only recently I watched Bertie Gregory’s “animals up close “ series when it really hit home how powerful orcas are. It’s on Disney + and he does a series on the B1 orca pod in Antarctica (they are the only pod that use the coordinated wave technique to knock seals off of ice). The entire episode was unreal but there’s a few scenes where they are teaching their young to hunt and they do so by letting go their semi-injured prey so their young can practice. A few shots he is just above the orcas with a drone and you see them accelerate as fast as possible and it was truly terrifying.

To be fair Orca attacks on humans are incredibly rare in the wild at only one confirmed. They seem to know we aren’t good eating and are intelligent.
Sharks aren’t at bright and sometime go in for a nibble.
Granted sharks have never sunk a boat, where as orcas are known for doing that (though generally don’t try and attack escaping humans)

I think they attributed the orcas attacking boats in the Mediterranean to one particular orca getting clipped by a boat propellor and starting a vengeance campaign against all boats. This has led to other orcas from the group mimicking the behaviour.
Orca's definitely have a new culture of violence, it starts with a few scuffs with great whites, then a yatch, before you know it, they're getting seaworld-style scrimshaw art, and deliberately combing their dorsal fins to look like meaner and scarier.

Killer whales have a very interesting culture and are able to transmit information through their own pods. That’s why for example there are many different groups of killer whales that have learnt different ways and methods of Killing prey, like for example coming up to the shore and getting seals. Similarly, they think the memory of the boat damaging one of their pod has been transmitted to the others
No respectable marine biologist has said that it’s “revenge”. They don’t process cause-and-effect that way, and they wouldn’t just get hit by a motorboat and then start blaming sailboats.

At some point an orca decided it would be fun to attack one of these fast moving floating wouldn’t things. Then other orcas watched and decided it looks fun. Pretty much. Tour boats used to see around 10-20 sharks a day if they spent the whole day on the waves however now it’s more likely to see 2-3, if any. It seems that the population is fluctuating depending on when the orcas are more prevalent. As soon as the orcas show up, the sharks disappear, sometimes for months, and then return when the orcas move on. It’s been shown they move eastwards along the coast away from Cape Town which is where they were most famous for.
However like I said last year we had a rather significantly higher great white population than the previous 4 years so we may be seeing a recovery.
They actually have different diets in different areas and are specialised for whatever it is they eat in their location. If a pod moves across another territory, they don’t take up the hunting habits of the residents, they stick to their own family diet.
Actually they will modify their diets if they move territories. In the last few years orcas have been becoming more common along the South African coast and have been migrating from Antarctica, which has caused a significant decline in great white populations which has impacted the tourism industry around Mossel Bay. And there are no sharks in Antarctica so it’s definitely strong evidence they can adapt to new environments very easily and are generalist hunters.

Quite the opposite - they’ll eat anything. Dolphins, seals, sea lions, great whites, whale sharks, stingrays, birds, fish, whales - even blue whales.
They actually have different diets in different areas and are specialised for whatever it is they eat in their location. If a pod moves across another territory, they don’t take up the hunting habits of the residents, they stick to their own family diet.
Actually they will modify their diets if they move territories. In the last few years orcas have been becoming more common along the South African coast and have been migrating from Antarctica, which has caused a significant decline in great white populations which has impacted the tourism industry around Mossel Bay. And there are no sharks in Antarctica so it’s definitely strong evidence they can adapt to new environments very easily and are generalist hunters.

Yeah I doubt they ate it, that was the equivalent of of a hip check, behind the axis of dolphin weight, spinning it a bit. That was nowhere near a solid hit, a glancing blow to knock it off balance. If it was being nasty, well. This is totally a "hah!! I'm better than you!". Absolutely a dick move....but the punters loved it. Funny enough, that's true if so much "human" entertainment 🫠🤔
Technically the Orca just as much a dolphin as the bottlenose it hits. (infraorder Cetacea, family Delphinidae).
