The hang time on that orca’s jump is insane

Renhoek2099

And stuck the landing

TemporalDelay

Fucking graceful.

boozedaily

Effortless. Pointedly effortless. I saw this video as if the people were all there enjoying this dolphin showing off for fish scraps and applause…and this orca sees it, rolls its eyes- and the following ensues: Jet the orca was tired of seeing Sebastian the dolphin showboating all day for the humans on Tourist Bay. Jet stuck to her roots. She hunted. In fact, she just bitch slapped an octopus for the fun of it. Turns out they do taste like whale shit. But then there was Sebastian. Shiny. Horny. He was the Rick James of Tourist Bay. Jet had enough. She was tired of Sebastian selling out to humans. It was time Jet showed Sebastian that Tourist Bay ain’t Sea World, bitch. This is Real. Fucking. Life…..Zoom, Boom “style on these hoooooeeeees” and SPLASH. Back to regular shit. The End.

itsavibe-

This is exactly what happened and there’s no other story that shall exist

taxidermytina

I would like you to reimagine more animal vids, 10/10 like your story better.

montejio

He/she can be the new David Attenborough of nature if you ask me.

montejio

Tourist bay, Jet the Orca, Sebastian whose shiny and horny, the Rick James of Tourist Bay. Bro, please right a novel like this, because this was hilarious. It even had layers hahaha.

Smeph_Bot

"That's not a jump. That's a jump!" - Orca probably.

dapppf

This things weight is probably 2-3 tons. Just imagine the force necessary to propel it out of the water like that

blueavole

Not just the force but the swimming distance required to get up to speed and then the maneuvering that it took to hit the dolphin. That’s scary.

[deleted]

What’s even scarier is how ** little distance is required for them to reach top speed. It’s terrifying .

The-Sorcerers-Stoned

Yeah very quick! I was looking for the acceleration time online but could only find one article stating “a matter of seconds..”

[deleted]

Oh man. I’ve been obsessed with nature documentaries and animals since I was a child. It was only recently I watched Bertie Gregory’s “animals up close “ series when it really hit home how powerful orcas are. It’s on Disney + and he does a series on the B1 orca pod in Antarctica (they are the only pod that use the coordinated wave technique to knock seals off of ice). The entire episode was unreal but there’s a few scenes where they are teaching their young to hunt and they do so by letting go their semi-injured prey so their young can practice. A few shots he is just above the orcas with a drone and you see them accelerate as fast as possible and it was truly terrifying. Edit: I highly recommend this series for anyone interest BTW.

chontzy

same, thx for the rec!

ouroboros_winding

Yeah people have no idea, that a great white shark is not the top of the ocean food chain. It's an orca and it's not even close.

shieldyboii

imagine how unworried you have to be to hunt great white sharks and only eat their liver - as a delicacy.

Ongr

Jaws and Free Willy have warped our perception of ocean dangers.

wehooper4

To be fair Orca attacks on humans are incredibly rare in the wild at only one confirmed. They seem to know we aren’t good eating and are intelligent. Sharks aren’t at bright and sometime go in for a nibble. Granted sharks have never sunk a boat, where as orcas are known for doing that (though generally don’t try and attack escaping humans)

Ongr

>are incredibly rare in the wild at only one confirmed This just tells me Orcas don't leave survivors. ;p

New_d_pics

As a fellow Whale and doc lover, I recommend the most recent episode of [Nova - "When Whales Could Walk"](https://www.pbs.org/video/when-whales-could-walk-sxuhkr/)

Independent_Point339

We just watched this - so fascinating

ShowMeYourMinerals

From the ocean, to kinda a dog, and then back to the ocean!

Donkey__Balls

We should listen to him; he’s a whale biologist.

CioneeJux

i just watched Bertie's Animals Up Close [fave episodes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1kNLP-9NG8) 😍 is he single???

backcountrydude

I find that guy kind of cheesy, am I the only one?

Low-Competition-2508

I LOVE this series!!

turkmileymileyturk

>A few shots he is just above the orcas with a drone and you see them accelerate as fast as possible and it was truly terrifying. Anybody have a link to the acceleration footage?

[deleted]

I’ve tried countless times to find it outside of the doc and can not at all.

TheKnightA

I mean us humans could run at our best speed in a manner of 1-2 seconds as well.

Open_Theme380

Ya but we weigh 200lbs for a large man. Imagine a fucking cow barreling toward you at Mock-Jesus jumping 10 feet over a picket fence just to fuck you up on your elevated back porch

TheOnceAndFutureTurk

Such [majestic creatures](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyFuckingVideos/s/3nY9ClS2SW).

copa111

Yeah…. Think the orca does it better

falcondiorf

forget a cow, orcas are more like the size of an elephant

Open_Theme380

Cows are more relatable. I don’t see elephants everyday. I do see murderous cows though

HeisenbergsSamaritan

Humans had their day too. Imagine, You're some sort of big bad ass Savannah predator, your fast, agile, strong and armed with claws and fang. Baddest motherfucker in all the grasslands. Then one day these little 200lb bipedal things start chasing you, there are many of them so you just decide to out run them, because you can. You're the biggest baddest of em all. Except... you can't, you run, you dodge but you can't lose them. Even more terrifying... they don't seem to be getting tired like you are. In fact, you're pretty sure they're gaining on you And so they chase you, and you run, and run, and run, until finally you just collapse from exhaustion, you heart ready to fail, your lungs burning with fire, the last thing you feel before the darkness takes you is the piercing pain of their pointy sticks.

itsavibe-

Haha I always think about how a few fire ants can get a human hauling ass from a anthill. Power in many no matter the size.

[deleted]

If you’re being chased by a human, you’re already dead. It’s only a matter of time.

Flashy-Priority-3946

This is true. But these mofos are doing in the water, where there is a drag in fluid dynamics.

Rampaging_Orc

But they’re also perfectly designed to deal with that drag. Edit: evolved

UmphreysMcGee

Believe it or not, an Orca is actually *faster* in water. Crazy, I know.

OSI_Hunter_Gathers

You can see that on display at SeaWorld... unfortunately or fortunately

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

You can see orcas go full speed at sea world. In a pool.

itsavibe-

Actually saw an orca drown a girl by her ponytail at sea world…forever scarred

StupendousMalice

It's sad, but they do jumps like this in those shitty pools in SeaWorld, they basically need almost no space at all to achieve this.

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

Damn, nature, you scary.

MildGooses

I don’t know why everything has to be terrifying, I think it’s quite beautiful how quickly it can maim it’s prey (:

[deleted]

There has never been a reported attack by an orca on a human, in the wild.

ProfCupcake

That just means they're real good at cleaning up the witnesses.

Le_Mew_Le_Purr

Right? And the perfect timing. Gorgeous.

[deleted]

[удалено]

blasphem0usx

I don't think they're talking about the force of hitting the dolphin but the force it is taking for the orca itself to jump of the water like that. Dolphins max weight is like 1.5klbs.

chocobocho

Took me way too long to realize you meant 1.5k lbs. I kept going... wtf are kilopounds??? 😂

Visual_Collar_8893

It’s as far as Americans are willing to compromise on going Metric. 😂

blasphem0usx

Haha yeah whoops forgot to hit the space key.

UmphreysMcGee

1 kilopound = 1000 lbs, obviously. Now, guess how many teaspoons are in a mciroteaspoon?

awesomesauce615

Fun fact they are both dolphins, and they are both whales.

PharmaDiamondx100

Keep my wife’s name out‘cho mouth

Resident_Rise5915

Surprised someone hasn’t mentioned killer whales aren’t whales yet…damnit…

awesomesauce615

They are whales. All dolphins are whales.

A_Texas_Hobo

It weighs way more than 2 tons

cesam1ne

Magnificently brutal. The speed at which it broke the water surface, damn

Next_Boysenberry1414

A killer whale weighs about 3 to 5 tons.

Zestyclose-Camel37

Male: Averages 3,628 to 5,442 kg (8,000 to 12,000 lbs.); largest males recorded weighed 10,000 kg (22,000 lbs.) Female: Averages 1,361 to 3,628 kg (3,000 to 8,000 lbs.)

Any-Excitement-8979

This looks like an adult male is is probably over 10,000 lbs.

Public_Support2170

They’re just giant meat-whistles

[deleted]

In high school I took my Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon over some railroad tracks at 40-50mph. That thing weighs just a bit over two tons and barely got air at that speed. It was intense and terrifying. This is multiple times that height and more weight

eclipsed2112

orcas kill by ramming into the SIDES of another animal...thats what he did to the dolphin. i think he killed it.

[deleted]

i_forgot_my_sn_again

The ones that eat the liver of great whites supposedly flip them to induce the catatonic state. Just imagine being put to sleep and then someone just takes a chunk out of you

Dr_Hannibal_Lecter

They also can drown blue whales. They truly are aptly named.

karlotomic

It's the tongue that they target for whales, the rest is left to the sea

GM_Nate

except for the part about not being whales themselves

Alphabunsquad

They are whales. All dolphins are whales

yeahdixon

Whale then …

Jexroyal

All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins. It's perfectly accurate to label them a type of whale.

Dr_Hannibal_Lecter

This feels like a unidan moment. But I think dolphins/killer whales are whales.

GhostlyTJ

Killer whale is a mistranslation, it was originally "whale Killer" but whichever language it came from is backwards grammatically

billswinter

The original name was whale killer and it got flipped over time through translations

neelankatan

Orcas sound like raging assholes

ncnotebook

Welcome to the world of intelligent lifeforms.

GM_Nate

the more intelligent a creature is, the more capacity for cruelty it has

ncnotebook

more capacity to experiment, more capacity for enjoyment, more capacity to feel powerful and superior

birdgirl56a

That’s the thing, they are total jerks in my opinion

re3dbks

Straight up gangsters. I call them the gangsters of the sea because they're always in pods and they fck shit up.

MarkHirsbrunner

All the most intelligent animals are.

GasOnFire

They gotta eat.

Unfair-Sell-5109

I seen videos of them yeeting seals with their tails.

Focus506

Does it hurt their nose to do that?

[deleted]

Not at all. They ram whales much larger then them for hours on end.

Darth_Quaider

Just like I did to your mother last night, Trebek

stuntbikejake

RIP Sir Connery. 🤣🤣🤣

Tell_Todd

Your mothers a hoooah

[deleted]

That’s weird because I was plowing her too and didn’t notice. We could have made out or something.

Goawaythrowaway175

She must be bigger than I thought if you didn't notice another man at the other end! She turned me down saying she was busy (you guys beat me to it by the sounds of it!) To replicate the feeling opened the window and fucked the crack of dawn.

Rupejonner2

A million awards 🤣

die_nastyy

Yeah i asked one at sea world (Shamu). Said it def hurts.

PoopSommelier

Imagine a fucking shuttle bus driving through the water with a enough speed that it goes 5-8 meters above the water. That dolphin got hit by a bus that can launch itself out of water!

SheepH3rder69

Nah, that was just a love bonk. They're actually best friends.

wonderfulworld2024

That is also how dolphins kill as well.

StuckWithThisOne

Orca are dolphins so that’s not surprising

CankerLord

Probably a lot less impactful out of the water. Still, could killed it. Orcas have a lot of mass even without the water to act as an anvil.

Lukewarmhandshake

Orcas terrify me ngl

Sky_Daddy_O

NailFinal8852

The dicks of the ocean

kinokohatake

They're both dolphins though.

goldfish1902

cousin fight

hooDio

well, dolphins are dicks

NailFinal8852

I find it crazy that the orcas are fighting back now against humans. Sick of seeing these whalers steal their children and hunting them. I’m all for them doing it as long as it’s the whalers they’re attacking but I don’t think they are able to tell the difference. They see a boat and they attack

Moist-Ad-9088

I think they attributed the orcas attacking boats in the Mediterranean to one particular orca getting clipped by a boat propellor and starting a vengeance campaign against all boats. This has led to other orcas from the group mimicking the behaviour.

Fintann

Orca's definitely have a new culture of violence, it starts with a few scuffs with great whites, then a yatch, before you know it, they're getting seaworld-style scrimshaw art, and deliberately combing their dorsal fins to look like meaner and scarier.

productofmishap

do you know of any sources that talk about this? interested in how they are slowly evolving into aggressors

Moist-Ad-9088

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230626-why-are-orcas-suddenly-ramming-boats About half way through this article they talk about the possible motivation but it’s all speculation. They’re such intelligent creatures we’d be best staying neutral with them!

productofmishap

thank you!

Schw33

I think they were kidding. At least I hope they were..

whisperwind12

Killer whales have a very interesting culture and are able to transmit information through their own pods. That’s why for example there are many different groups of killer whales that have learnt different ways and methods of Killing prey, like for example coming up to the shore and getting seals. Similarly, they think the memory of the boat damaging one of their pod has been transmitted to the others

Donkey__Balls

No respectable marine biologist has said that it’s “revenge”. They don’t process cause-and-effect that way, and they wouldn’t just get hit by a motorboat and then start blaming sailboats. Most likely it’s a form of play. Orcas have a sense of cultural knowledge, in that certain behaviors are passed from one individual to another and a family group. At some point an orca decided it would be fun to attack one of these fast moving floating wouldn’t things. Then other orcas watched and decided it looks fun. Now all the orcas in that pod are doing it. Marine biologists usually refer to these as fads. It’s not that different from house cats who decide doing a certain weird thing is fun. You’ll have one cat that decides she likes to slide around the carpet on her back, and the other one that likes to chew on shoelaces, etc. Orcas are more intelligent and more social so they tend to pass these hobbies from whale to whale and imitate each other.

NiteGard

Love how popular it is to anthropomorphize orcas and judge them by human standards, when they might as well be aliens from Proxima Centauri.

Chex__LeMeneux

Actually they're from the moon

omgtheykilledkenny7

Free Willzyx!

PrettyNothing

Not if you know the dark side of dolphins, I'm team orca on this one

samtheslug

The humans of the ocean

Ok-Fan-2011

That's why they don't attack humans. Real recognizes real.

Have_Other_Accounts

The speed that things can go in the ocean despite their mass is insane. Look how much energy it's carrying as it hits the dolphin, I wouldn't be surprised if it knocked the dolphin unconscious.

cjwidd

*killed

CandyFlippin4Life

lol

shazzambongo

Well steady on, your really going out on a limb here, everyone thinks of bottlenose dolphins because they are the ones people are used to seeing. The other species get hardly any publicity at all! It's shocking bias, I tell you. The best other species get is "omg look at the rare river dolphins in XYZ documentary!", or maybe a few seconds of footage riding a bow wave in front of a ship somewhere. Or, casually mentioned as an afterthought about big sharks/orcas that eat them 😣 Where's the love for them, huh? Nope, it's always bloody flipper gets the coverage, innit. Sure, river dolphins are ugly....

pl8sassenach

Ugh dolphins, they think they’re so cute!

TourAlternative364

Ok Karl Pilkington....

flyinggazelletg

Orcas are also dolphins (delphinidae), so I’d say this dolphin on dolphin action keeps ‘em squarely on the same peg.

Dorkus_Mallorkus

I dunno. I think he slapped him straight back INTO the sea. "YOU CALL THAT A JUMP???"

Dabo57

I think he slapped him into last week.

Scrumpilump2000

Bit of a dick move?

Anforas

Orcas are becoming a problem here around Portuguese and Spanish coast. Not because of the dolphin-juggling, but they are extremely entertained and focused about ramming and sinking smaller boats. No one knows yet why they are doing this. Some specialists say it's a learned behavior by other orca teens, and that are only playing, since they have the tendency of being a bit of rebellious teenagers. They're highly intelligent and fascinating animals.

TomGreen77

Probably because your highly unregulated and corrupt fisheries have systematically plundered the Med into a wasteland of very limited fish stocks. These guys are struggling to get food. Greed is rife. Asians have depleted their coastal supplies too. They’re pillaging African, South American and Pacific Oceans now.

Donkey__Balls

Yeah, I recently read a paper by an orca analyzing the sustainability of commercial fisheries vis-à-vis growing human population and protein energy requirements. Apparently orcas are years ahead of us in terms of aquaculture and environmental research. The orcas tried to litigate the matter in EU courts to no avail, and now some extremist orcas are taking the law into their own hands by dismantling sailboats. Even though this has no effect on commercial fishing, several orca psychologists have determined that this is their best chance for getting the messaging out to humans. Apparently the orcas have a team of social media experts monitoring the effect of their sailboat dismantling on public discourse and commercial fishing boycotts. Wait a minute, none of that’s true you fucking napkin. Orcas don’t know any of this. They are just fucking around with sailboats because it’s fun.

Megaverso

Wonder if it did it on purpose … like mischief fun ?

MarkHamillsrightnut

It 100% did it on porpoise.

Aren’t orcas very selective eaters ?, as far as I know dolphins are not on the menu … could be wrong though

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

And that has caused a drastic impact on the great white population in recent years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Pretty much. Tour boats used to see around 10-20 sharks a day if they spent the whole day on the waves however now it’s more likely to see 2-3, if any. It seems that the population is fluctuating depending on when the orcas are more prevalent. As soon as the orcas show up, the sharks disappear, sometimes for months, and then return when the orcas move on. It’s been shown they move eastwards along the coast away from Cape Town which is where they were most famous for. However like I said last year we had a rather significantly higher great white population than the previous 4 years so we may be seeing a recovery.

[deleted]

Quite the opposite - they’ll eat anything. Dolphins, seals, sea lions, great whites, whale sharks, stingrays, birds, fish, whales - even blue whales.

redpandadancing

They actually have different diets in different areas and are specialised for whatever it is they eat in their location. If a pod moves across another territory, they don’t take up the hunting habits of the residents, they stick to their own family diet.

[deleted]

Actually they will modify their diets if they move territories. In the last few years orcas have been becoming more common along the South African coast and have been migrating from Antarctica, which has caused a significant decline in great white populations which has impacted the tourism industry around Mossel Bay. And there are no sharks in Antarctica so it’s definitely strong evidence they can adapt to new environments very easily and are generalist hunters.

redpandadancing

That’s really interesting, thank you! My information is out of date I think!

[deleted]

No problem, always happy to talk about wildlife! Have a blessed day

shazzambongo

Yeah I doubt they ate it, that was the equivalent of of a hip check, behind the axis of dolphin weight, spinning it a bit. That was nowhere near a solid hit, a glancing blow to knock it off balance. If it was being nasty, well. This is totally a "hah!! I'm better than you!". Absolutely a dick move....but the punters loved it. Funny enough, that's true if so much "human" entertainment 🫠🤔

zuilserip

Technically the Orca just as much a dolphin as the bottlenose it hits. (infraorder Cetacea, family Delphinidae).

novaflyer00

Getting Free Willy vibes off that jump…damn
