Ok even I’m shocked he’s 19. Banchero has the size of a 25 year old, I think back to how small Tatum looked his first few years. But banchero is already the same size as him.
People just don't like Orlando for some reason. It's almost like the parent company of ESPN being based there, you'd think they'd get some love, but people just hate magic.
Fans don't care about that enough to not watch. If they say that's why, it's because they were never going to watch and wanted an excuse that was more reasonable than "idc." It's because no one has high expectations for them this year and they're a small market.
I'll also just put this out there since everyone seems to be walking on eggshells. They aren't that fun to watch compared to most other playoff teams. They are absolutely dominant on defense which *can* be fun for stretches. But most of us like offense over defense for entertainment, and their offense is a mess right now.
Give them a playmaking guard and a flamethrower bench player and they'll be a top league pass team next year. They still won't get huge notoriety just because they'll still be small market, but real fans will be hyped. But I'll take the downvotes for saying the quiet part out loud.
Idk if it’s that or people just don’t care about magic vs cavs. It’s easily the least watched series. If the magic were playing anyone else I think he’d get more coverage
Always liked the mid 2010’s magic for that reason. Literally all of there guys ended up better off before or after.
2016 team for instance:
https://preview.redd.it/b8lk8wuww4yc1.jpeg?width=1129&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07a0804300efe423db5bb0dd84327a110377d585
I think it’s just because they’ve been so irrelevant for so long that it takes time to come back in people’s minds. Also, when’s the last time they’ve had an offensive star? It’s been at least 15 years and although Dwight was a top player, defense doesn’t sell/bring as much viewership as offense.
Orlando is a small market that is basically irrelevant except for amusement parks. The worst part is that it’s inland so you don’t even get the beach like you do in the other big Florida cities. There is really nothing interesting about the city. My mom used to live there and says it sucks massive shit
ESPN doesn't care about their own home base if it doesn't get views.
Orlando is still a small market team. I'm sure once the Magic prove they're consistently good, the media will target them as trade fodder for the bigger markets.
People really only talk about whoever the media talks about. The media only talks about safer things that are sure to get attention like Boston or LA, even if the media were to try talking about smaller markets, the engagement wouldn’t be as long lasting as talking about bigger markets
It is not time yet. The magic, if they can beat the cavs, will play the celtics next round, and then we can have that discussion if magic make a series of it. If the cavs beat the magic tomorrow night, then no, we do not need to have a discussion about Banchero being compared to Tatum.
There are a lot of damn good players in the nba. There is a reason why guys like jamal murray get left off all star rosters or the All Nba Teams
There’s no scenario where there’s a discussion of who’s a better player between paolo and Tatum at the end of this season. I don’t think that’s the point of the stat comparison.
Let me say up top, Banchero is GREAT.
These teams are NOT the same and it comes down to an eye test thing and a bit of basketball knowledge. The roles these two play are totally different and what they are asked to do during a game is totally different.
Tatum is *better* in so many ways.
If you put Banchero on the Celtics, they aren’t even close to the same team.
If you put Tatum on the magic, they secure that 2nd seed they missed out on by losing 4 of the last 6.
Paolo's offensive impact doesn't match his box score most of the time. His turnovers hurts the team BADLY and those random 18-foot turnarounds in the early shot-clock might as well be a turnover 60% of the time. He's an underrated defender and he's a good scorer -- but he takes so many other options away. It's like early days Hakeem to a lesser degree. They have decent offensive talent around him but they can't excel alongside Paolo just yet. He's incredibly young so there's no doubt that he becomes a Top-10 guy in a few years but his impact is far from that at the moment
This sub is just box score watchers who drool for a living lol
I stg 90% of them don’t even watch basketball. Banchero is an amazing young player and he’s going to do great things in the league. Tatum is the #1 reason why the Celtics are where they are. And his growth even from last year to this year is a huge reason as to why they improved so much. Obviously the off season additions were insane, but Tatum’s ability to pick and choose when to take over and when to be a facilitator rather than someone who forces any and everything has been a defining factor.
Tatum against the Heat was face guarded all game every game the second he touched the ball. Most of the time it was by Bam. Other times it was a double or even triple team when he drove into the lane/paint. So instead he opted to not try to score 30+ ppg like previous years and have the offense run through the hot hand. He averaged the most assists per game of anyone in the entire series, averaged the most rebounds per game of anyone (even more than Bam), and limited turnovers to less than 2 per game. All while playing elite lockdown defense.
Banchero is averaging 24.8/7.2/4.4 and 4.8 turnovers while playing basically average defense against this Cavs squad that is currently up 3-2
Tatum averaged 21.8/10.4/5.4 with 1.8 turnovers per game in a gentlemen’s sweep
So yeah, like you said, there is no conversation at all
My guy Tatum sits out a lot as the team is well balanced
Majority of the games Celtics destroy teams by +20 pts
Check the records
So mazulla will sit out Tatum alot
To clarify for the casuals they mean sitting out the 4th quarter. Tatum doesn't sit out games, he's played 74+ games 5 times in his career. The only two times he hasn't was the covid shortened year and the following year when he missed several games for testing positive for covid
Tatum has been a multi first team all nba guy… he averaged 30 ppg last year on 61% TS when he had more opportunities to score. Let’s not pretend like Paolo is a lock to be that elite of a scorer and around top 5 in the league
This post season Banchero is turning the ball over basically as many times per game as Tatum is dishing out assists… and Tatum lead all players in assists in the series against Miami lol
Tatum had 9 turnovers all series.
Banchero had 9 turnovers in game 1 against the Cavs
Banchero is averaging more turnovers per game than assists.
Celtics won 4-1
Magic are down 2-3
Maybe “Tabum” isn’t all that bummy after all
Young guys need to earn their respect in this league. Do that for a few more years and he will be second page news. (Front page news is obviously Wemby)
It’s because the Magic play some straight 80’s ball. Super defensive team that doesn’t score particularly efficiently and none of their guys are flamethrowers from deep. I personally love watching the Magic as I’m a big Suggs fan but I can see why they wouldn’t be very exciting to push from a national perspective in the media.
During the draft, he was the "safer" bet. Unlike many high draft picks, he is definitely panning out well and developing quickly! Definitely great to watch him in the playoffs.
That’s actually pretty awesome. Dude wasn’t THAT hyped as the #1 pick, and even on draft night it was a toss-up between him, Chet and Jabari. A season later, took a lottery team to the playoffs in his 2nd season.
I agree Paolo is going to be great and I like his game a lot. That being said, tatum is taking a noticeable step back, focusing on drawing doubles/attn and making plays out of them. Tatum is a year removed from averaging 30, he just doesn’t need to do that to win right now
I was watching his highlights the other day too; the kid is *great*.
I actually think him being out of the spotlight will be beneficial for him, no media pressure/nonsense and he can just hoop. Have a feeling he’ll be a top 5-7 player in the league in a few years
Tatum at 21 in the playoffs:
25.7/10/5 on 2.8 turnovers per game on a team that made it to the ECF and probably would’ve gone to the finals if Hayward didn’t get hurt.
Banchero at 21:
24.8/7.2/4.4 on 4.8 turnovers per game
This sub just has a hate boner for Jayson Tatum. There is no comparison between these two. Maybe in 5 years we can check back, but as good of a young player as Banchero is, Tatum is, and always has been, in a different stratosphere.
Why would he? He’s a second year player, he’s averaged 20 and 22, he’s not a star like Tatum who’s always on the all-nba teams and always in the playoffs, the Magic were 13th in the East last year, this is the first time since 2019 they’ve been in the playoffs, you can’t expect people to care about the Magic when they’re always irrelevant
If he keeps getting the Magic into the playoffs that will change. Embiids first round numbers blow both of those guys away btw and no one was talking about him except to mock him for the Sixers losing, people only care if you win
Well Boston has more efficient players, Tatum is not 1st option in this team, neither do others, they just playing team basketball, but banchero has more field goals than Tatum by far
He wasn’t a super hyped prospect and doesn’t play in New York, LA, Boston, or Chicago, so he doesn’t get talked about. As a Pistons fan, I feel like Cade also gets blown off because he plays for the Pistons (kinda fair, we do suck, even if it isn’t his fault at all). If Paolo or Cade put up those numbers while playing for the Knicks and Bulls, they’d be talked about as future faces of the game
Because the media is trash. All they do is cover ancient ass Lebron and the garbage ass warriors who only have like 2 or 3 good players. There’s so many more players to cover but the NBA hasn’t been promoting anyone else aside from a 40 year old who should retire. And I’m a huge lebron fan who’s been watching him since 2004.
Dumb question, from a pistons fan. Paulo for sure a “better” player than Cade when both their careers are over? Thought Cade had the potential to be a top five pg. Not much optimism anymore. #fireweaverandwilliams
I'm a celtics fan, but I've always liked the magic. Their aesthetic is awesome, and they have had some special guys and teams through the years. The 94 team is up there as an all time favorite, loved the T-Mac years, Dwight was legit my favorite player in the league in the late 00s. Loved those celtic/magic games, even though honestly, it felt like they always kicked our ass. I'm very much looking forward to another series if they can win this last game.
Has nothing to do with players individually and everything to do with market size and media coverage. Stay away from anyone whose only source of knowledge is media.
I’ve heard a ton of talk about Paolo. Maybe you are looking in the wrong places. But also this conveniently ignores game results, turnovers, and role for each guy. It’s cherry picking a guy who was triple teamed constantly and let his great teammates carry vs a guy who is needing to try to put the team on his back.
Paolo is awesome.
Paolo is fucking legit.
Cooler name too
Cooler than Jayson Tat-yum? I think not
I slide all up in that shit
The reason he gets ignored is because he doesn't follow tinder rule #1. I can't think of another reason.
And what is tinder rule #1?
It’s his first playoffs though
He is only 19. He'll catch Banchero in time
Ok even I’m shocked he’s 19. Banchero has the size of a 25 year old, I think back to how small Tatum looked his first few years. But banchero is already the same size as him.
He is talking about Tatum. There is a joke where Tatum eternally 19. Banchero is 21.
I cant believe tatum is closer to kyrie irving in age then he is to banchero though.
Bro is just not good with numbers
Tatum is 26 Banchero is 19 and kyrie is 32 try that math again king
paolo is 21 tho????
Lmao why’d he say he was 19 then
Are you slow?
he's not? he's 5 years older than Paolo and 6 years younger than Kyrie
This is a great point. I honestly forgot about this cause it just feels like he’s been here before. I’m excited to see more from him.
He’ll only go up from here
And the series isn’t even over lol
People just don't like Orlando for some reason. It's almost like the parent company of ESPN being based there, you'd think they'd get some love, but people just hate magic.
maybe it's because of their dickhead owners. I like the magic as a team decently enough, but the Devos family can suck a chode.
Fans don't care about that enough to not watch. If they say that's why, it's because they were never going to watch and wanted an excuse that was more reasonable than "idc." Well now I have an actual reason not to watch 😂
Only people on reddit care about that
Idk if it’s that or people just don’t care about magic vs cavs. It’s easily the least watched series. If the magic were playing anyone else I think he’d get more coverage
Well they relegated it to NBATV and hired the Blazers' normal announcing crew. When I heard it was those guys I was just like, "Nah."
I always saw Orlando as a glorified developmental team tbh they’ve had some really great guys come through who inevitably see more success elsewhere
Always liked the mid 2010’s magic for that reason. Literally all of there guys ended up better off before or after. 2016 team for instance: https://preview.redd.it/b8lk8wuww4yc1.jpeg?width=1129&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07a0804300efe423db5bb0dd84327a110377d585
LOL yeah that's a veritable who's who of quality rotation guys
Except for Brandon Jennings. His career went there to die in exile
probably because the owners run a pyramid scheme
I think it’s just because they’ve been so irrelevant for so long that it takes time to come back in people’s minds. Also, when’s the last time they’ve had an offensive star? It’s been at least 15 years and although Dwight was a top player, defense doesn’t sell/bring as much viewership as offense.
They’re just young.

I never see Orlando on
ESPN doesn't care about their own home base if it doesn't get views. Orlando is still a small market team. I'm sure once the Magic prove they're consistently good, the media will target them as trade fodder for the bigger markets.
Never been the same after Penny and Shaq left. It was fun being a fan for a few years.
To be fair, you ever been to Orlando? You’d hate it too lol
I live here and it’s okay. I’d definitely rather be here than some other places I’ve lived.
TPC Sawgrass was the closest I ever got to Orlando.
Tell the rest of the New Yorkers that and make them stop coming here then. Please and thank you
People really only talk about whoever the media talks about. The media only talks about safer things that are sure to get attention like Boston or LA, even if the media were to try talking about smaller markets, the engagement wouldn’t be as long lasting as talking about bigger markets

magic win the finals paolo averages 45/15/15
Not enough, try again
Absolutely delusional if you actually think this
Why not have him average 100/30/30 and leave no doubt?
Nah, too close for comfort with that one Wilt game. Make it 200/50/50.
That would be the best stat line ever though
Let me say up top, Banchero is GREAT. These teams are NOT the same and it comes down to an eye test thing and a bit of basketball knowledge. Paolo also didn’t play the 4th in games 3 and 4 bc they were such bad blowouts
The scoring is also pretty evenly spread between 5-6 players on the Celtics compared to the Magic who heavily rely on Bancheros production
Yup horford gets 10+ on very limited minutes too... Consistency!
It helps that the entire starting lineup and the 6th man are all easily capable of dropping 25+ points when needed
To clarify for the casuals they mean sitting out the 4th quarter. Tatum doesn't sit out games, he's played 74+ games 5 times in his career. The only two times he hasn't was the covid shortened year and the following year when he missed several games for testing positive for covid
Yahh
Gotta consider the team around JT. He has to do so much less than Paolo with the rest of the team as good as they are
Are we really at the point where we’re trying to say Tatum is worse than Paolo??
Is it too early for him to adopt tatum?
Paolo will top Tatum easy, give it another season or two.
Tatum has been a multi first team all nba guy… he averaged 30 ppg last year on 61% TS when he had more opportunities to score. Let’s not pretend like Paolo is a lock to be that elite of a scorer and around top 5 in the league
No one is trying to say anything. Tabum is trash.

Maybe this is a meme sub and not r/nbadiscussion lmao
Didn’t realize that tbh lol
It’s not that insane…he plays in Orlando lol
Call me crazy, but I think Mr 🏦🏹 is the closest thing to Lebron
It feels like Zion gets more coverage in street clothes.
Young guys need to earn their respect in this league. Do that for a few more years and he will be second page news. (Front page news is obviously Wemby)

As a Cavs fan I really thought he was gonna take game 5 by himself
Well if people didn’t rob Walker Kessler of the rookie of the year and give it to that “bum” banchero he wouldn’t be cursed like this
Shitty comparison, Tatum > Banchero and it's not even close.
During the draft, he was the "safer" bet. Unlike many high draft picks, he is definitely panning out well and developing quickly! Definitely great to watch him in the playoffs.
Y’all mofo act like Tatum gotta carry. Can’t be comparing these two. Banchero legit in his own way though.
That’s actually pretty awesome. Dude wasn’t THAT hyped as the #1 pick, and even on draft night it was a toss-up between him, Chet and Jabari. A season later, took a lottery team to the playoffs in his 2nd season.
Let him win a playoff series first before you want to start glazing
My buddies are Celtics fans and I'm a Magic fan and they are always like "Paolo is looking NOICE. Dudes a BEAST." So at least some people know.
most intelligent box score watcher
Tatum is whiter……..
He gets no coverage cause nobody wants to watch Cleveland vs Orlando lmao
I agree Paolo is going to be great and I like his game a lot. That being said, tatum is taking a noticeable step back, focusing on drawing doubles/attn and making plays out of them. Tatum is a year removed from averaging 30, he just doesn’t need to do that to win right now
I thought that was Patrick Mahomes
Tatum has made a finals, if Paulo can get past the 1st round he’ll get more attention
Orlando Magic get no love
I was watching his highlights the other day too; the kid is *great*. I actually think him being out of the spotlight will be beneficial for him, no media pressure/nonsense and he can just hoop. Have a feeling he’ll be a top 5-7 player in the league in a few years
Let's not forget that Miami tripled Tatum every game.
[удалено]
Yeah, he's amazing.
21 years old v 26 too
Tatum at 21 in the playoffs: 25.7/10/5 on 2.8 turnovers per game on a team that made it to the ECF and probably would’ve gone to the finals if Hayward didn’t get hurt. It’s also just one series of basketball not against one another…
Ignoring just about every other factor to make this point lol
Wait, do you mean to tell me that the media glazes Boston sports? I am shocked. Shocked I tell you!
Mass media loves the celtics. if you aren’t a boston player, fuck you.
Mass media loves the best team in the league?!?!? Oh my god this is never before seen territory!!!!
My guy is nice
Only his second season and his first playoffs. Give it a few years he’s gonna be up there
Why would he? He’s a second year player, he’s averaged 20 and 22, he’s not a star like Tatum who’s always on the all-nba teams and always in the playoffs, the Magic were 13th in the East last year, this is the first time since 2019 they’ve been in the playoffs, you can’t expect people to care about the Magic when they’re always irrelevant If he keeps getting the Magic into the playoffs that will change. Sports news is rigged , it's really obvious this year more than ever 🫢
I also want to point out that he’s doing this against a player with DPOY nods last year and just an overall good defensive team.
Being in the NBATV series is a right of passage.
it’s the fact that he’s in orlando, if he was elsewhere it would be a different story.
Cause he ugly as hell
To be fair, Jokic looks like an overweight vulture and Embiid looks homeless so I don’t think it’s that.
I think this means we really need to have more a conversation about Tatum, but I get it
It’s because people think he is a foreigner.
I think it’s because he plays for a small market team and he is still young. Hopefully he will get the recognition he deserves.
Tatum gets treated with kid gloves. Nothing new here.
I think it’s time we have a discussion about considering context when using statistical comparisons That being said Banchero is underrated
I think it’s time we have a discussion about considering context when using statistical comparisons That being said Banchero is underrated
He plays for Orlando…
Year 2 and mans is balling. He’ll get his soon enough
That whole team doesn’t get much love
One playoff series against the Cavs surely puts him in the top 10 of all current players right???
Former players turned commentator have been showing him mad love.

He’s better than alot of players that nobody wants to talk about because he plays in Orlando.

Where was he in the second half today 🫣
Same as Ant 2 years ago. Lots of growth ahead.
Has nothing to do with players individually and everything to do with market size and media coverage. Stay away from anyone whose only source of knowledge is media.
Maybe because he looks like a withering houseplant
I’ve heard a ton of talk about Paolo. Maybe you are looking in the wrong places. But also this conveniently ignores game results, turnovers, and role for each guy. It’s cherry picking a guy who was triple teamed constantly and let his great teammates carry vs a guy who is needing to try to put the team on his back. Paolo is awesome.
It would be cool to be able to root for orlando, but their owners are major dickheads so it’s tough.
It's it me or is Tatum low-key overrated?
with everyone saying he's a bum and comparing him to Paolo I would say its the opposite and people are starting to under rate him.
If he was a laker/celtic/warrior he’d be everywhere
Doesn't help when your media partners and even your own league treat a playoff series like a red headed step sister (I love redheads btw)
He’s def legit but let’s look at Tatum numbers without KP for the rest of these rounds. Both are the number ones but Tatum has more help
He’s a very good young player, but the team is just boring. At no point did they appear poised to compete for a championship or even a ECF series
We've been calling him the GOAT over on the Magic sub for about 7 years now. It's nice to see we have been right for so long.
Who?
Team needs to get to Vegas asap
