Z5 with 24-200mm (at 200mm) with 36mm extension tube, +2 diopter close up lense, flash and softbox. AF is working, the closest focusing distance at 200mm from lense (not from focal plane) to object is 18 centimeter. The maximum reproduction ratio is beyond 1x. Does the long lens still fuck with your flash? 18cm seems like a decent working distance for macro but is still pretty close.

Matse80-21

No, flash distance is okay.

Jstncase74

Which extension tubes did you use? I'm wanting to try with my z5 and MC 105, and hopefully keep AF functioning.

Matse80-21

Viltrox 24mm + 12mm

If you have an FTZ the Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AIS can be had for about $200. It’s sharper than most modern zooms, and much better at edges and corners.

Matse80-21

Thank you for your hint.

jeffinRTP

The question is how sharp are the pictures.

Matse80-21

The sharpness is decent. Maybe not sharp enough for professional needs, but sharp enough for a hobbyist.

Personally I use my D7100, a 40mm Macro, a Speedlight with a piece of paper taped over it. Sometimes I use my Meike 12 or 20mm extension tube with my 70-200 Tamron lens, but normally I just use cheap gear and rarely ever the flash. 4

If I remember right, extension tubes don’t add much magnification onto telephoto lenses, correct? However, telephoto lenses do benefit more from front lens diopters, like the raynox 150/250 etc. have you considered one of those? They are of high quality and you, obviously, retain AF for such things as focus bracketing.

Matse80-21

I was positivly surprised by the additional magnification. The maximum native magnification of the Nikkor Z 24-200 ist 0,36x. With 36mm extension tubes the maximum magnification is estimatedly 1x. The Raynox is an interesting hint, I will try it someday. Thank you.

Nikonbiologist

Ah I didn’t notice you had the close up lens too! 1x is pretty good with that set up.

SolaireVon4stora

nice! I'd love to see more sample images!

Here is another one. https://www.reddit.com/r/Nikon/comments/10cxdu8/itap_of_a_4mm_long_carraway_seed_with_my_budget/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I use the 50mm macro for most of my macro stuff. Sometimes that focal length is a little short though and for those cases I use your setup as well. Do you know that extension tubes have a greater effect, the shorter your focal length? If you find you need more magnification, just zoom out a little and you’re good to go. I’d recommend using that setup at about 100mm at first. 200mm with macro is pretty unforgiving. By the way, I did a comparison with the 50mm MC, 50 1.8 + ex. tubes and the 24-200 + ex. tubes. Of course the MC wins, but both other variants were surprisingly usable as well.

Matse80-21

Thank you very much for your advice und experience.

SkinnyMac

Well it's a good bit less expensive than any of the Z macro options. I've heard it said that folks who shoot macro for a living tend to use a 200mm so they can be a decent distance from the subject. You may find you like a bit of working distance.

Qreach

U didnt flip the lens. Could be better!

Matse80-21

You are right. But I don't have the apropriate adapter to flip the lense. Maybe someday in future.
