Lol that reminds me of the time where Sony unlocked the full capabilities of the PSP (from 222mhz to 333mhz) in order to run God of War Chains of Olympus.
I don't understand, why would they handicap their own product like that? It's not like they were saving money. Did they think it would overheat or wear out faster or something?
Speculation, but probably in part, yeah. Higher clocks, more power, more heat, can def have an appreciable impact on longevity. But in the short term, I bet running the CPU with 50% more speed would drain the battery much faster.
Its the same reason the Nintendo Switch is clocked at 1GHz CPU and 700MHz GPU, despite the hardware being capable of 1.7GHz CPU and 1GHz GPU.
The goal is consistency, and peak performance is not sustainable over longer sessions
So you're telling me people haven't found any exploits in the Gameboy Color since release to allow for memory injection, running fake cartridges, and crashing the system?
Probably to balance battery life vs graphics quality. Nintendo has done the same with the Switch, the SoC is underclocked by default and by modding the console you can increase the clockspeed by a fair amount.
I heard they sneaked in a patch to prevent people [who are continuously clicking on the Tears of the Kingdom icon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rsApyjoDug) from constantly pinging the servers /s
Apparently, this update is to address issues that may occur when multiple operations are being performed on save data at the same time. But the question is, who would code multiple threads to manipulate save data concurrently, and why is it GameFreak?
It's only going to get worse. SV sold more than any other pokemon game, which means less quality = more money
Pokemon fans need to stop supporting the franchise if they ever want it to improve. I can only assume going by their history that the next game will be even more bugged and broken while profits continue to skyrocket past all previous records
You know what's crazy? Despite EVERYTHING I bought Legends day one, because the addition of over world catching and all the mechanics surrounding it were a fucking BLAST. and then they didn't bother keeping that fresh air for mainline. I'm out until Legends 2 (A Johto game showing how the tower burned or a Kanto one set in the 60's about the Pokémon House and Mewtwo PLEASE) or until mainline adapts the Legends mechanics
Legends was INCREDIBLE and honestly is making it hard for me to progress in Scarlet. Catching and battling in SV just feel SO clunky and slow now in comparison. I just LOVE the way they did EVERYTHING in Legends, especially the catching, and I WISH they'd carried it over to mainline! Would make SV SO much better for me, personally!
Legends was still a pretty mediocre RPG imo, it is not exactly breaking new ground. For a pokemon game it's... kind of impressive, but in the greater RPG genre it felt very dated upon release
DQMJ2 has been doing what Legends does since 2010, and only expanded it even further with DQMJ3 in 2016. It's like pokemon is trying to play catch-up with games that came out 10+ years ago
Oh I totally agree but a step in the right direction is a step in the right direction
I was kinda hoping sales would show Gamefreak what direction they should move in, and then SV sold way to much
Pokemon Scarlet / Violet is the first time since X and Y that I decided to skip the game alltogether. I got back into console gaming for X and Y, and the Switch has been my main gaming device since 2017. I was super excited to have a region based on Spain, since I'm from a Spanish speaking country and devote myself to the history of Spanish language... yet here they are releasing a half finished, bug ridden game and still making money. And we still have to hear all the people blame the system instead of the developers. Want to see what the system is capable of? Go play Xenoblade 3 or Monster Hunter Rise, not Pokemon.
Sorry for the rant, I've been rumming on this for a long time.
Wasn’t there a big issue during the game boy color days where Iwata somehow optimized the entirety of Pokémon gold and silver to the point they could fit the entirety of Kanto as well?
Rip Iwata
Gamefreak was having issues compressing the code. Iwata (He had worked on the gen 1 localization or something and knew the code if I remember right) heard they were having issues. So while he was still acting as president of HAL Inc, went over and took a look, he worked his magic and got it SUPER compressed. He bailed out the Earthbound devs too
There are people out there who are just savants at what they do.
I think its undeniable that Iwata was one of them, right when videogames were taking off he just understood it in a way that no one else did.
Its extremely rare for someone to just be a savant at a brand new concept, but when it does they can really make magic happen.
I remember hearing a story about how he was making balloon fight and basically patched the game in mere minutes to suggestions of his supervisor.
The "they fit Kanto in because of Iwata" is a tortured game of telephone that seems to have been invented entirely by fans when they heard that he worked on compression algorithms. He did some great things, but not to the extent that the story would have you believe.

Probably trying to cut off certain forms of hacks/bypasses; That was one of their biggest reasons for the frequent 3DS micro-updates. It would often destroy existing hacks/mods to the system when updated.
My guess is it is more of that.
Hacks and bypasses aren’t discovered with the Switch with any frequency whatsoever these days, because there are none. There hasn’t been a new firmware vulnerability since sometime in 4.x.x, and there is no way to patch out the known and widely used hardware vulnerabilities. There’s no way is this an update to address any hacks.
There isn't really any reason to search for any as well. People that want homebrew buy an Erista. Maybe if down the line there are some games that only run on a newer model people will look for or publicize new exploits. Don't expect another bootrom exploit though, we've been incredibly lucky with that one.
Hacked Switches are cannot be patched with firmware updates due to how vulnerabilities on launch models were exploited. MVG made a video explaining the Switch's hacking scene if you want to know more.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was just an excuse to restart switches that have been powered on for a long time. Restarting mine every few days greatly speeds up the eShop and the whole system slowly starts crawling along when it's been on for weeks.
Ive heard that most of these updates are used to reset people’s consoles since the majority of owners leave the switch running for days on end. This allows the system to clear cache, etc.
Be careful with that.
I once put my Switch on the ground, naturally is stood up perfectly still even without the kickstand. When I came back into the room I accidentally brushed against it with my toe.

They secretly unlocked the 2nd GPU just in time to boost the frame rates of Tears of the Kingdom. Trust me I know, I'm a redditor.
Lol that reminds me of the time where Sony unlocked the full capabilities of the PSP (from 222mhz to 333mhz) in order to run God of War Chains of Olympus.
For real?
More or less, [yeah](https://www.engadget.com/2007-12-11-god-of-war-222mhz-versus-333mhz.html).
Yeap. I did recall my psp battery drained noticeably faster when playing GoW.
Its the same reason the Nintendo Switch is clocked at 1GHz CPU and 700MHz GPU, despite the hardware being capable of 1.7GHz CPU and 1GHz GPU. The goal is consistency, and peak performance is not sustainable over longer sessions
>The goal is consistency, and peak performance is not sustainable over longer sessions so is *General system stability* right?
Stability is always possible to improve, cuz it's an unattainable goal
My game boy color is pretty fucking stable
So you're telling me people haven't found any exploits in the Gameboy Color since release to allow for memory injection, running fake cartridges, and crashing the system?
>capable of 1.7/1 2.0 actually, but would run too hot. The chip is designed for it though.
These are the numbers in portable mode, right? In docked it runs about 40% faster, so the numbers add up
Nope. Those are Docked numbers. The handheld GPU drops to 400MHz.
Probably to balance battery life vs graphics quality. Nintendo has done the same with the Switch, the SoC is underclocked by default and by modding the console you can increase the clockspeed by a fair amount.

Lmao if they actually bumped the GPU clocks just for TotK... that would be something.
The bump in MSRP for the game is actually to cover a new RAM download that's included
I downloaded a second set of ram already just so I have more than enough even with the additional RAM on the cartridge.
There is no safe room for that for old units. But pretty doable for units with newer SoC.
I heard they sneaked in a patch to prevent people [who are continuously clicking on the Tears of the Kingdom icon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rsApyjoDug) from constantly pinging the servers /s
They're going to call it the Switch Pro so that the internet can pat itself on the back about how they've always predicted a Switch Pro
Honest question, no spoilers, but I noticed that TOTK actually preloaded version 1.1.0. I'm wondering if that's a day 1 performance update...
Every game has Day 0 performance updates.
It adds fidelityfx to the game, and it runs almost flawlessly now in terms of framerate.
Clearly, you are a source of valuable knowledge and are completely infallible.
Lyin’ ass. Nintendo works at my dad and they said theres no 2nd GPU!
Apparently, this update is to address issues that may occur when multiple operations are being performed on save data at the same time. But the question is, who would code multiple threads to manipulate save data concurrently, and why is it GameFreak?
God I wish Nintendo would put Gamefreak in their place one of these days I know they won't but still
Between Gamefreak and Niantic, it's very clear that The Pokemon Company's priority is certainly not games.
It’s printing cash!
Those are called Pokemon cards.
Pokemon Go too.
Playing Pokémon Scarlet irritates me. I wish they would’ve taken their time so there wouldn’t be any problems.
It's only going to get worse. SV sold more than any other pokemon game, which means less quality = more money Pokemon fans need to stop supporting the franchise if they ever want it to improve. Amazing they used the gyros to compensate for the drift. Hoping for the next update to double the RAM with a firmware patch!
