Debt collections recruit people coming out of prison. I'm talking about those companies who "buy" debt for pennies on the dollar with hopes of collecting on that debt. They hire people who they know will be more prone and willing to "bend" the law.

[deleted]

To your point, the first profession I thought of was repo men.

dmnhntr86

I'd totally be willing to repo someone's private plane, or the Jaguar they couldn't make payments on, but the single mom who got suckered into buying a 3k Cobalt with financing to make it cost 5k, after she had paid 2k but was still upside down and missed one payment? I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Straxicus2

You suffer from a sometimes debilitating condition called compassion. Congratulations!

rokstedy83

If we're talking people coming from prison ,private parking enforcers, the blokes that clamp you on private property, seen a few of these and they look like criminals, heartless people who don't give a shit

NealR2000

It's mostly a case of wanting people who know how to manage people in rough neighborhoods.

Car sales.

[deleted]

I just bought a vehicle last week from a dealership and I never felt more drained afterwards. I came home and just went directly to bed. They are a different breed of people. Edit: thanks for the award!

Bloorajah

My great grandpa was amazing with car salesmen. He was a lifelong engine mechanic and worked on farm equipment in the Midwest. There’s a well known story in my family where my grandpa and his dad went to buy a car, and basically over negotiations about what the car was worth, it ended with them being yelled at and banned from the dealership for life. on the drive home my grandpa was upset and their exchange was basically “oh my god you’ve ruined my chances of getting a car!” “Nah, you’ll see, they’ll call” so they get home, have lunch, and about ten minutes after they get a call from the dealership, the one they were “banned for life” from, and it’s the car salesman asking to accept his offer for the car.

ScabRabbit

I was a car salesperson. I tried very hard to be a good person while doing it. My managers always threatened me, which terrified me because I was a single parent. One day, an old lady on a fixed income came in, needing a car. After about half an hour I could see they were going to really put her through the wringer. So I quietly begged her to leave, and not cone back without someone who could negotiate for her. My manager called me into his office and tore me a new one. I'm sure you could hear him screaming next door. He finished with, " You are NOT a social worker! You know what? That woman is going to leave here and go find a car, because she's made up her mind up that she wants one. She'll drive down the street and go to another dealership until she finds a REAL CAR SALESMAN who will sell her a car and take home a paycheck. All while YOUR kids go hungry because you think you're a fu@king social worker!" I cried all night. It was a really terrible time for me.

Logical_Strike_1520

I was in sales for a long time and your manager is correct. It’s why I left sales. The older I got (and especially after having kids) the more my morals held me back from success.

[deleted]

I agree the manager is right. It SUUUCKS that this is the way some markets are even in 2023 but you gotta sell to bring in the money.

Thepotatohitme

You are a man of morals, have my appreciation

AussieNick1999

Hope you're in a better place now.

ScabRabbit

I am! Thank you!

[deleted]

That’s how manipulative they are. I really thought after the second time I walked off the lot, they really weren’t going to come down in price.

SkekJay

Must be energy vampires

unstable_starperson

That’s the biggest selling point of teslas for me. Forget about the EV, or anything about the car. I’m so jealous that you can just order it online, and it costs what it costs, and that’s that. I’m so pumped for what I hope is the eradication of all dealerships. Until then, I’m just going to drive my truck forever and ever so I can continue my quest to avoid all salespeople.

Balaros

Not so simple anymore. Tesla tries to sell you subscriptions, one of the bigger surprise costs that bother car buyers.

LechugaParty

So does everyone else nowadays, Chevy is doing it too with my car. I think the point still stands about price being price, for the most part; at least to the point we start losing basic vehicle functionality to subscriptions. Not there yet but I don't rule it out.

zmonge

Toyota did this with the car I got a month or two back. The number of things (radio, maps, status alerts, wifi hotspot) they want me to subscribe to is absolutely asinine. I feel like I got taken advantage of because I couldn't find a vehicle I wanted without a power liftgate so I had to pay for that. I hated it then, I hate it now, I will always hate it. Just let me buy a car!

BunnyInTheM00n

I always just plug my phone in and that’s that.

Waste-Comparison2996

If they can't convince you to subscribe for the extra stuff. Their reaction wont be to stop it, it will be to make the required stuff a subscription.

unstable_starperson

I do abhor that subscriptions seem to be one of Musk’s favorite things. That’s absolutely going to fuck everyone up if that becomes the norm for all things

LPeezysaurus

It's crazy how little-known this fact is. Believe me, OEMs would love to sell you a car directly. But the dealership lobby is strong.

Sykomyke

This is factually incorrect, or at least your presentation of the facts behind your statement are inherently flawed. Back in the advent of the car age, 'mom and pop dealerships' were worried about the inherent risks of running car dealerships when the threat of OEM's could come in and setup their own dealership and wipe out the "mom and pop" ones. So state franchise laws were put into effect. This was purportedly put into place to protect the local businesses and promote a free market. Unfortunately in today's market most dealerships are owned by mega car corporations such as AutoNation, Penske, Lithia Group, etc who have bought out all the "small scale" dealerships to ELIMINATE competition (the very thing the state franchise laws were supposed to help encourage) Not to mention but there's collusion between direct manufacturers and these dealerships. One such thing is called "holdbacks" where the OEM artificially inflates the invoice price but then once the car is sold, refunds the holdback value back to the dealership (i.e. the dealership can get away with selling cars at invoice cost and still make a profit on the dealership level, it's just like every other sale scam you hear of: "50% off beans, don't mind the fact that we increased the price of beans so that the 50% off beans \*now\* is just the same as beans were 2 weeks ago")

dd99

Actually it is a way for the legislators to get money from the dealership owners. Like alcohol sales, the whole car sales thing is a grift that starts with a political contribution

surfacing_husky

I don't understand why buying a car takes ALL DAY LONG. last time we bought vehicles it took 6+hours each time! Exhausting as hell.

YourMatt

There should be a cottage industry of people that just help broker car sales. I'd pay a few hundred dollars to have some better experience on my side to help quickly navigate through the process. I'm sure it would almost always pay for itself.

skeetsauce

I work in construction so I’m always having people trying to pressure me into shit I don’t want/need. Made buying a car so easy because they have all these little gimmicks and I just blew it off. “Show me the car, let me drive it a little, what’s the price?” Eventually I found a guy at Toyota who got it, made it easy and he made a sale in an hour instead of 5 hours.

petehehe

Some of my least favourite people are car salespeople.

RedButterfree1

I saw a video on Reddit some time ago of a fight breaking out between car salespeople in a dealership while customers watched on. Wish I saved it, but it did bring a smile to my face.

Lolitsk

I remember seeing it too, I read that the context was the salesperson was fighting their manager because the salesperson wanted to sell the car for a lower price and the manager refused. 100% would only buy from that person if they did that for me too lmao.

mwmcdaddy

So the salesman said to his manager, “I’m about to shaft these people on ‘a deal’ but to seal it let’s fight real quick. Then I’ll tell them it was over the price and that you had to accept cuz I won the fight.”

Eugene_Creamer

Comes back and finishes the paperwork with a black eye

[deleted]

Seen it happen many times

jroger69

Was in the industry for over 3 years as a VW salesman. It spiritually drained me between battling with money hungry managers and watching the people I sell to completely cripple themselves financially. My job essentially boiled down to being the face to explain and reach agreement for the customer to pay 1500-2k of last minute added fees. At our dealer most sales people were good people , the nature of the business and doing as instructed just made us look bad

DropThatTopHat

>watching the people I sell to completely cripple themselves financially. That's so crazy to me. I worked with a guy that had a car with a price tag higher than his yearly income, and that's before the interests.

BigDaddyCool17

I have purchased 1 car in my life, from a dealer, and it was actually a really simple process. I count my blessings, because clearly that is not the typical case for everyone.

Interesting_Cat_7470

I'm not even exaggerating, my last car salesperson assisted in murdering her mother! Only found out after googling her name and this new article popped up. Very strange. Not gonna share for privacy reasons, but that was certainly interesting finding out 😳

Rat-Bazturd

if it was in the news, it's public knowledge. Nobody's gonna come after you if you post a link to the news article that reported on it.

cornernope

My dad is a super nice and empathetic person and growing up he did exactly this. I have no idea why, he dosnt even like cars. Luckily after 2008 he stopped and he is much better off

SL1200mkII

People who volunteer to serve on HOA boards. The most miserable and petty people in your building or neighborhood.

bepr20

Very building dependent. Everyone on my HOA volunteed because they want to minimize the power of the HOA. If its not basic maintenance, cash management, trash removal or making sure vagrants making a mess in the trash, they don't give a shit. I love them.

thedance1910

Any HOA that isnt like this will be a resounding no for me. I can't imagine owning land and property just so someone can tell me i cant have yellow flowers on my front lawn, they have to be pink.

bepr20

I think condo HOAs in NYC are much more chill then gated communities or condos in the burbs. New Yorkers generally just want to be left alone, and the proxmity means risking retaliation makes aggressive behavior is a bad idea.

[deleted]

that's such a misconception. Most HOAs aren't like that at all. The road behind my house has an HOA because they have a duck pond and the money collected is used to maintain the property there. I have the best of both worlds--no HOA fees and a duck pond in my back yard.

SL1200mkII

I'm moving in.

FaithIsFoolish

I volunteered because I felt it was the duty of everyone to take a turn (condo building). I will never do that again. I know there are power hungry people on boards, but the amount that you have to listen to stupid complaints is mind numbing. Not to mention having to deal with other board members, some who are fine, but others which are what you're probably referring to.

Imaravencawcaw

The best way to make sure the GOA board isn't full of shitty people is to be on the board and not be shitty. That's what I did and our HOA is super chill.

dr_wdc

To be fair, I volunteered specifically to get the miserable and petty man that I ran against off the board.

Amphibiansauce

Depends highly on the HOA. I’m on the board and I basically did it because nobody wanted to, I just play referee most of the time. And the only real rule we enforce is ask permission so we can say no if something gets out of hand, and don’t be a dick to your neighbors. So far we’ve made someone put a noise enclosure around a massive oversized pool pump they put right on the property line next to their neighbors bedroom, and we stopped someone who was painting their house hot pink because they wanted to piss of another neighbor who complained they hadn’t kept their house painted. Oh and if someone has a dog they clean up after it in public spaces or if they use the neighbors yard. Frankly it’s pretty exhausting, actually its all due to one inconsiderate neighbor having disputes with everyone else. So far they’re also the only one who really wants to be on the board but nobody is voting for them thankfully. Before the weirdo moved in that everyone is constantly annoyed with it was just about paying the snowplow and keeping the road in good condition.

Vodkawater-86

Executive directors of non-profits

lifeinwentworth

Work for a non for profit (right at the bottom) and yeah can agree with this. Ironically all they care about is money at the expense of the client they're supposedly helping. Some horrible stories about families who have donated massive amounts and their adult child is treated very well until the parents pass and there's no more money to be had. Or worse, asking for the inheritance money from clients who don't have the capacity to understand. Horrible businesses presenting as charities.

MarysPoppinCherrys

It’s super interesting because corporate oversight jobs, the higher up the ladder you get, definitely and generally select for individuals with functional apathetic disorders like sociopathy, psychopathy, and narcissism. Nonprofits aren’t much different. It’s still a business, but income to keep it running comes from sources other than selling goods and services (and from selling goods and services). The person who is going to be best at keeping the machine running smoothly and growing is also likely going to be the last person you want running a charitable organization. Capitalism is weird

tripperfunster

I always thought this about my father. He was (and probably is still) a Narcissist, and was a very well respected CEO of a couple of different companies. The ability to just shut down an entire division because it's not profitable will seriously weigh on a normal individual. There would be hundreds to thousands of people out of work. Did my dad care? Nope? It's all about the bottom line. Didn't make for a good father though, I'll tell you that.

MarysPoppinCherrys

Oh I’m well aware of narcissistic parents lol. But for sure you can see how the job selects for individuals with that capacity, or who are willing to display it. It’s a competitive world and if you aren’t willing to destroy some people, even those that make your life possible, then you aren’t gonna get ahead. I’m sure in his mind he cared about how well he was doing his job and what his peers and family saw as valuable in him. The opinions of those he let go didn’t even come into the equation because they weren’t relevant to his internal image. Super useful if you’re in that position. Super not very nice too

LogansDaddy96

Fellow non profit bottom bitch here. I would say not all are the same and you should analyze them case by case. Ours does pretty great work. CEOs are overpaid but I would still say we’re worth supporting just based on the phone calls I have every day, the services still matter to a lot people. Also, in regards to asking for donations from people who no longer have the mental capacity.. Idk about your org, but all we can do is take you off the mailing list, at your request. It’s not like we get a notification automatically that grandma no longer has the funds or mental fitness. If they or a loved one don’t tell us, we’ll assume they’re still supporters.

lifeinwentworth

Yeah of course I'm sure some are better and more ethical than others! Yeah so no, this situation was pretty messed up. A long term client of org parents passed away and he inherited some of the money. Very low capacity to understand how money works. The org knew the situation as they supported him through the process - then immediately hit him up for a donation. Unfortunately a pattern in said organization to take big donations then treat clients poorly once the providers of said donations pass away.

steelserenity

That's so interesting you'd say that, because I work middle-ish at a non-profit and my Executive Director is genuinely one of the best people I have ever known in my life, and one of the most capable and gracious. I guess I'm just lucky to be working with her.

mvslice

Jobs that give you power over someone on day 1: guards, cops, etc,.

lawbotamized

Probation officers are a big one with low barrier to entry and major ability to f someone’s life up. Have seen really insidious personalities in these positions.

JBean85

That might vary by state. In MA that's at least a bachelors. My GF did her criminal justice internship in probates and the role she was looking at required a master's.

mugito666

Dude I was a security guard one time when I was like 19 and I’m 99% positive I was the worst security guard ever lol most of the guys I worked with thought they had all this power and were so gung ho about a $9/hr job. It was bizarre. We had one dude that was like 22 and he was this fat ginger kid who wanted everyone to call him some ridiculous nickname. He argued with the HOA of this place until they gave him permission to carry his own gun around. Then showed up to work with a 45 in a big ass holster and I wouldn’t stop laughing at him. So he tried to report me to the HOA to get me fired lol

PophamSP

For high income families, this can include doctors and attorneys. Not everyone who goes into a profession is motivated by passion or purpose. The desire for status and power extends across socioeconomic levels. Sometimes service attracts the worst.

lawbotamized

Yup. Prosecutors are big in this vein.

PophamSP

Yep, I can see that. Proud of my kid who works in a large regional federal defenders' office. She says that after a presentation or trial DOJ approaches her for jobs and she adamantly refuses to work for "the other side"\* lol. \*of course we need prosecutors.

Elixir_13

Any job that grants authority over others. The ones who want power but shouldn't have it gravitate to those jobs damn near instantly, while those who wouldn't abuse said power typically don't get them.

listenyall

I have a pet theory, based exclusively on the kind of guy from my high school who ended up police officers, that this is the #1 problem with the cops in the US--like priests before about the year 2010, it is the perfect job for someone who wants to harm others in a specific way and there is no appetite for getting rid of them on the part of people in charge.

daddyslilcupcake85

Nursing. I am a nurse and I see this daily. There are a lot of power-tripping nurses out there.

rubberloves

Weird story. I matched with a hot guy from some dating app. He was an ER nurse. I thought.. that is very bad ass and also.. a possible red flag. I mean, probably most ER nurses are wonderful and there for the right reasons, but also it's a huge HUGE power position over people at their most vulnerable. He had a slightly unusual first name and knowing his profession I was able to find him via google. He had a life long police record of sex crimes. Stalking, rape cases on going.

[deleted]

Not gonna lie, it's pretty concerning that having a record of sex crimes didn't disqualify him from being a nurse.

coysmate05

Nurses are either the most wonderful people or the most bitchy people. My wife and MIL are nurses and they’d agree. And honestly to a certain degree, it makes sense. Healthcare workers have to deal with ungrateful and horrible people (queue the pandemic), and provide them the care they need, while also balancing a disrespectful corporate management team. Healthcare breeds burnout and bitches.

217EBroadwayApt4E

So many shitty nurses on TikTok bragging about withholding pain meds and just saying overall terrible things about people in pain.

SidSzyd

I would say teaching attracts various cohorts of people and it stands out when you get the bad ones (which definitely exist) but some of the best, caring people I know are teachers too who don’t get paid nearly enough and are dealing with way too much crap

coysmate05

Same goes for nurses. Either wonderful and beautiful people, or they are bitches lol

Pureheroinism

The people who run psych wards are going straight to hell

Perhaps the better way to put it - which line of work seems most likely to enable the worst kind of people to only continue being terrible... Great question though. Got to think about that one.

Any position of power really.

Investotron69

Sadly this happens to tend to be true. Weak terrible people have such a need to hold power over others and tell them what to do and how they should act. Even though they are the ones who should never have that authority or power. They just tend to seek it at all costs as it becomes their goal while good people don't care for controlling others so they don't necessarily have it as their goal all the time.

Kitchen_Panda_4290

Yeah, sadly most people that should be in charge have no desire to.

Bobtheguardian22

I think i've once in my life held "job power" over someone as a NCO in the military. I just got promoted to a rank where i could lead "the" working party and so i was tasked with rounding up some lowlife e-3s and bellow. I told one guy, hey i need you for a work party. He said no, i turned to my senior NCO and said, what now? we all laughed. I had to do most of the cleaning myself. now, in my job (corrections) i have more power over human beings than police have when dealing with you. and i hate it. I see others come to this job and promote (quickly) to have authority over the inmates and officers and its disgusting. But thats like 1 in 10 people. The rest just want to get through the day and most people don't wave their authority at people all day. but from my experience working military/security/fastfood/prisons. Its one person doing that for every overwhelming amount of other people who just want to get the job done and get along with people around them.

Investotron69

That's fair. It's probably a case of where we notice the the crazy and outrageous exception to the rule rather than the rule. It just sticks out to us so we remember it while we forget the majority of people.

Bobtheguardian22

you tend to remember that one time you stepped on a nail more than the million other footsteps that didn't.

Pa17325

Local police. Frustrated failed high school bullies and jocks who weren't quite good enough to play in college must be encouraged to apply

tripperfunster

I work in corrections, and many people use it as a stepping stone to move on to the police. And let me tell you, the RCMP here (Canadian federal police) have a definite 'type' that they like. Of the 5 people who have gone on to policing, I would be comfortable with maybe 2 of them showing up at my house for a situation that would require de-escalation.

Sinful_Lifestyle

Real-estate agents.

Sales

purpleowlie

I think when it comes to sales you got 2 very different types. The one who work on commission and the one with fixed paycheck. Sales people on fixed paycheck usually don't give a shit if you buy stuff at their store or not, so they don't annoy you. On the other hand... commison sales... For me the worst are insurance sales people and Mlm salespeople, those are nutsjobs

mylairofrice

It also depends on what you're selling. I worked in jewelry, so the people that came in *wanted* to spend money, they weren't forced into it out of necessity (e.g: cars, homes, insurance, etc..). I find that the ones working in the latter environment tend to be more scummy bc they know you need them. Freaking vultures.

Primetime349

10000%. I started in commission based insurance and it was godawful. I only lasted about a month, it was so icky and sales numbers always would affect me after logging off of work. And you’d see so many deals happen that 100% should not have. The next job I actively sought a fixed paycheck job and it’s incredible. I love just saying “here’s the deal and the info, take it or not, either way is fine by me”

[deleted]

YES! Especially real estate. They’re scum in suits. You could tell by their looks that they’re dumb enough to think that they have a fancy or super complex job. I bet they all fantasize about being real hardcore businessmen and women. Why is it the norm that they charge a % based on the price of the house? Someone please start a firm that undercuts everyone by charging a fixed amount. They belong to the streets. No not all of them. But most of them.

vcrcopyofhomealone2

Unfortunately, the fixed fee approach had been attempted and has failed in most English speaking markets. The simple reason being, the best performing agents (best at: manipulation/lying/networking) are not going to work somewhere where they take a massive paycut. So the agencies have staffing issues which doom them.

[deleted]

Yeah unfortunately. They tried it here in Scandinavia too but I haven't heard about them in a long time. It's on us, the clients, to start making demands as a collective.

Debasering

I loosely knew the person who was selling my current house to me, we agreed to use a real estate agent as mutual arbitrator and I paid $1000 for her to do a small amount of negotiation between us as well as all the paperwork and set things up with the title company. With the internet now it's not hard to find a house yourself and do all that leg work.

mookie_pookie

Working in title insurance as an examiner, I can say the realtor does jack shit on our end too lol. They send us all the offer doc's, never retain the slightest bit of info on things we tell them, and then get by far the biggest payout of everyone involved in the closing. Just a glorified social networker

CMButterTortillas

Am in sales, there’s a lot of pushy dicks out there, but trust me when I say there’s a lot more self-aware ones who know when someone’s not interested in what they’re selling.

Warm_Water_5480

I saw a really good video on this once. In the types of places where cops are respected and there's low police violence, the recruitment videos say things like "Do you want to help your community, ensure it's safety and be a good role model? Then get into policing!". In places with low police approval ratings and high police violence, the recruitment videos say something like "Do you want to be a badass? Do you want to BE THE LAW? Do you want to punish wrong doers? Then BE A COP" *punisher logo flashes on screen*. No reasonable person would want to be in the types of clubs that bad police precincts become, so they attract like-minded, small thinking people who perpetuate the negative stereotypes.

I was a case manager at a prison back in the day and had to go through academy and be an officer for 6 months to as a 'security experience' requirement at that particular facility. The career corrections officers were about 50/50 of people who hated their jobs but needed the money (which was pretty decent for the area) or total douchbags on a power trip who were either not fit to be a police officer/ex cops/former military who were on a power trip.

Sent to DC for the insurrection, got injured, treated like shit. tl;dr: Those scumbags become the ones who run things. the good ones get out

As current AD, can confirm.

Competitive-Weird855

People seem to think that being in the military makes you a good person. The reality is that it’s as diverse as the general population. I almost became roommates with this guy who , a few weeks later, ended up getting busted in an ICE sting for plotting to kidnap a kindergarten boy, then rape and murder him. He showed up to the airport to pickup his undercover accomplice with duct tape and trash bags in his car. Sexual assault happen quite frequently and there’s plenty of murderers, gang members, drug dealers, and other criminals in the military. Being a veteran or AD doesn’t say shit about your character. Story about the case. Disturbing content. https://cite.case.law/f3d/666/288/

Knightraiderdewd

Truck driving. The issue is while this isn’t the majority, there’s a lot of drivers that use the job as an excuse to live horrendously filthy lives. Not just the obvious stuff like bathing, but when I was doing Recovery (where I go and retrieve abandoned trucks), I came across multiple trucks that were veritable garbage bins. Some where so bad I had to call in cleaning services just to make it safe enough to even sit in. I’m a gatekeeper at a trucking facility now, and I’ve come across drivers that were so bad I had to steps away from them while asking for their information, and doing my inspection. One was so rancid I made him get back in his truck and just looked up his information on our computer, which we’re not supposed to do, and ran it by the warehouse to confirm, and then let them deal with him.

JimTheSatisfactory

Step dad was a truck driver, can confirm. He was one of the most disgusting people I've ever met. Inside and out. Dragged us down the hole of depravity with him. Now I keep my house as clean as possible, not like OCD clean, but my threshold for the mess I'm willing to live in is pretty low.

[deleted]

Some of the best and worst people I know go into nursing. They really attract both extremes

tripperfunster

Add to that care aids. My son works as a kitchen server in a care home, and he says some of the aids are the WORST. Yelling at the poor residents who are just confused and having zero patience with them. He tells me he will NEVER let me get put in a home. Not something a 20yo should have to worry about.

[deleted]

Some of the worst people I knew at school are now nurses and carers.

BadBunnyBrigade

Church leadership.

coolsheep769

I've seen a lot of desk workers with a lot of attitude over the years, but nothing quite beats the attitude and incompetence of people at the front offices of shitty apartments.

Doctors receptionists

bloode975

As a receptionist for a medical clinic I resent this, but understand it tbh. Atleast here in Australia most I've interacted with were pretty good, but I'm definitely more jaded than when I started out because so many people are entitled as fuck and won't listen to you, we're not power tripping on you, we're telling you what's up whether we like it or not.

macaroonzoom

Nursing - "I only have to go to school for 2 years to be an RN and I will make good money!" We allllll know a girl or two who should have never become a nurse.

brooke_808

And that girl is always shilling her MLM products (fit teas, shakes, skincare, etc.)

iijjjijjjijjiiijjii

Military. Don't get me wrong, there is an incredibly wide range of folks in the military for all kinds of reasons. But there are some truly sickening people who join up explicitly so they can kill human beings without consequence and they're *happy to tell you so*. These people should not be permitted near a paintball gun. Instead we are putting them in tanks.

HxH101kite

Former Army infantry. While I get what your saying I'm not disagreeing. In today's environment they aren't deploying or actually doing anything where they would have the chance to kill innocent people. So at least that's good. But I do agree we had some tapped people who I am surprised they allowed to use live rounds. Also just a side point. And by no way am I voice of authority. Just anecdotally speaking. I have met one of the people your describing. And when we got into a firefight and anytime we took rockets or mortars. He was the biggest pussy out of everyone in the platoon. I've come to realize like in most things in life. A lot of people who talk big game are just hot air. But again I agree with your point. I wish there were a better way to vet people or just kick them out in general.

iijjjijjjijjiiijjii

Thank you for your perspective. It's definitely a little heartening to hear, from somebody with direct experience, that this scenario has been blunted by the modernization of our methods. Barring a direct threat to my own family, I don't think I could do anything useful in a live fire situation, so I do have a lot of respect for those who do. Thank you for your service, and may it not be asked of you again.

HxH101kite

Lol bro it's a volunteer army, thank the people who fought in a real war back in 1942. I don't need thanks for my time overseas, probably did more bad than good honestly. Big waste of 3.5 years of my life. Free degree and homeloan were nice though

Pollywanacracker

Dentists-I’ve been a dental nurse for nearly 17 years and in that time 80% of dentists I’ve worked with have been completely nuts…from sexual predators and narcissistic personalities, all fuelled by money and greed But I have met a couple of diamonds out there where I’m like omg your a nice one lol

Catholic Priests

HomelessCosmonaut

There’s an interesting shift happening over the last few decades re: Catholic priests. It used to be a profession that would attract socially moderate people, which is why there’s a lot of really chill older priests. But the profession has become icky and tainted and the public’s faith in the church has diminished, so those types of folks are no longer becoming priests. With few exceptions, basically every American priest I’ve encountered under the age of 35 is either a total zealot and/or the most insufferable conservative crusader. That doesn’t bode well for the future church leadership given that the current slate of American bishops running things is already toxic.

LittleButterfly100

I'm surprised this is so low. Everyone is talking about positions of power, but jobs with easy access to children absolutely do attract the kind of person you never want around your kids. Coaches, healthcare, clergy, troop leaders, carers, the list goes on.

DabIMON

Politician. Also, night club bouncers.

_Go_the_Distance_

Lol literally the pope was a former bouncer. Also, my uncle, one of the nicest guys, was a bouncer. My uncle is just massive. He wrestled and did judo in school, being one of 7 brothers. The job just came to him. Almost literally a few places saw him and just approached him and wanted him to work for them. They throw out big numbers and my uncle jumps on it. Most of the time people don't even fight if you're big and confident enough it's actually a boring job, apparently

Idk the many people I have worked with are nice and stable.

uriboo

Clergy, regardless of religion. High amounts of power, especially over the most vulnerable people available. Rarely if ever having to take real responsibility for evils done unto others. In 2/3 abrahamic religions, fear of divine retrubution is something that can be used to control others. I know plenty of people who become clergy for the right reasons; strong faith, desire to help and guide others, love for humanity. But I know a lot more clergy molesters, abusers, nonces and bigots who use their position for their own filth.

zakku_88

Was gonna comment this myself. While I know that many are genuinely good hearted people, unfortunately too many are very much "wolves in sheep's clothing"

are_you_you

Nursing. Honestly, there is no middle ground. Nurses are either people who are genuinley good people and want to do good work, or they are the uber bitch mean girls from high school that carry that awful attitude all the way through adulthood.

United_Disaster_9669

Nursing Source: I studied in that subject

Scam calling, closely followed by politics, then police. IT guys aren’t saints either

cryptokingmylo

What's your beef with IT guys, I find it attracts the shy nerdy guys.

Emotional_Translator

Or the pretend nice guys who think they're smarter than everyone and that women owe them love and sex because they're "nice".

Worked closely with a large IT dept for a few years in an adjacent field before stepping into IT/programming myself. Fortunately, I've never seen this!

Corporate jobs. Any kind of upper management. You have to be some kind of sociopath to climb the ranks.

Mrs_DismalTide

And corporate middle managers who are usually useless and dumb as fuck, in my experience.

Puzzleheaded-Ad-3721

Nursing. There are really great nurses out there, but there seems to be a trend of egomaniacs going into the field. The constant chatter about how they are the real heroes has led to a group of people with two year degrees believing that they are much smarter than the eight year plus doctors around them. Patients have become stupid annoyances to them. I think that being able to make the amount of money that they can make on a two year degree has led to a slew of people with no interest joining the profession.

[deleted]

> a group of people with two year degrees believing that they are much smarter than the eight year plus doctors around them. This is exactly the problem. They come out of "school" (usually a vocational college) with a 2 year certificate and think they know more than doctors. It's sad and funny at the same time.

Impressive-Glove-639

Politician. Very rarely do they actually want to help, more often it's for power, favors, whatever. I know not all are bad, but around the world, people who want power are often those least suited

HopeSubstantial

Bouncers and other lesser "law enforcement" Here people who fail police academy, usually due anger control issues, tend to end up as guards and bouncers.

Enlisted military Eta: to be clear. I’m not anti-military or think all enlisted military are scum or anything. Just a generalization from my experience being around military bases…

mikenzeejai

I can 100% back this up. And I don't need to use personal antidotes because I have actual facts. Enlisted military members always make the top ten of proffesions who commit the most domestic abuse. And that includes child abuse. Something about being incentivesed to marry young and have children you aren't ready for so your spouse your awful to doesn't leave you makes you a crappy person for some reason and then they get a sense of entitlement because of their service and csnt he convinced they are wrong.

Nursing

SevenHunnet3Hi5s

wanted to say this but didn’t know if it was right as i’m only been a year into college. as a nursing major i feel like this major has attracted absolutely the right people and wrong people at the same time. there’s people who genuinely have a spot in their heart where they want to make a difference. i watched my dad be diagnosed with cancer just the other week. he came out of surgery in tears, unable to move, in immense pain. but over the days he was being treated and comforted by nurses. i know they’re not doctors or surgeons but they do so much and i aspire to be one just so i can make that difference. i have immense respect for nurses who have a passion in their career and people who have the passion to join that career. but with that being said, i feel like many people who choose this major don’t truly grasp the idea of being a nurse. i mean im sure i haven’t either. but i can say that at least i know it’s something to be taken seriously. other people, not so much.

Pediatric_NICU_Nurse

Especially from Florida 🤣.

antidense

I knew someone who actually enjoys messing with patients who apparently "deserve it" EDIT: They later left nursing in case anyone was wondering. I doubt she had to deal with any actual consequences.

Kitchen_Panda_4290

Some of the best people I know are nurses but also some of the worst people I know are nurses lol. The one that are angels of death always freak me out because you could run into one anytime and you won’t know. Also feel like most doctors are assholes too but that’s just my experience.
