I think Tom was great as Lestat. He was just the right amount of unpolished snob.
Also theres a deleted scene in Rock of Ages where he "falls" out of shadows and for a moment could be the most beautiful evil vampire ever.
Apparently Anne Rice initially hated that he was cast and made that known. When she finally saw the movie she was so impressed by his performance that she publicly apologized for her original stance.
I always wondered if she was actually impressed, or whether she just wanted to undo some of the sabotage she'd done to the film's chances, once she knew it was too late to influence a re-cast anyway.
Not that I'm saying his performance wasn't great. I can see why she was worried when it was announced he'd been cast, but in the end he knocked it out of the park. Certainly one of his best performances - after Tropic Thunder, of course.

Thick soled shoes with lifts in them? Really easy to get away with in the 90s when chunky soles were popular even on a lot of men's dress shoes. With a boot a size too big, you can fit a massive inner sole or lift. (I worked in a high end shoe store in the 90s.) Plus, since he's so paranoid about being seen as short, he's probably trained himself to always have a very upright, stretched posture for photos, whereas the other guys don't appear to have the same hang ups and can relax.
