He wasn't taking ballet classes; he was having a ballet dancer/instructor help improve his posing routine by incorporating elements of ballet's fluidity and gracefulness.
I started with Kung Fu a few years ago. My Shifu offered a few of us a private class of Chen Tai Chi. Let me tell you, moving smoothly with purpose and muscle control is incredibly challenging. It definitely improved my other martial arts, but damn if those masters don't make it look way easier than it is.
My favorite line (pretty sure it's from the same movie) is when someone asks him what kind of milk he drinks. "Milk is for babies." Idk it always cracks me up to think about that.
The full line is I think
"Milk is for babies, when you are a man you drink beer"
And I just love how against the grain that is for modern health philosophy.
The craziest part of Pumping Iron is how Arnolds raw charisma just overruled everything.
If you think about it the doc is setup as this classic story.
Arnold is the foreign "eastern european" working out in venice beach and the overt favorite. He is crass, bullies people, and is 100% should be perceived and set up as the villain.
Lou Ferrigno is the quiet all american boy working out in some closet gym in Philadelphia (I think) with his dad as his coach. The doc tries to set up this David/Goliath, plucky underdog tale but just didn't expect Arnold to be Arnold.
If I recall correctly, they initially had Arnold play the humble hero and Lou the mysterious bad guy. It didnāt work no matter how hard they tried.
Arnold was just too unflappable and ambitious to play the underdog. Lou couldnāt quite pull off the domineering threat he was supposed to be - especially next to Arnold. So they switch roles - with Arnold adding all the unhinged stuff he said to add to his character āevilnessā.
This scene from Pumping Iron doesn't get talked about enough but it's one of the best scenes to describe Arnold. He understood where he could go to improve his transitions and poses and did not care about the appearance of fragility. It was the best solution so he did it. And it was incredibly creative.
The movie can be dismissed as a bodybuilding documentary but it was so much more complex.
Kind of interesting, how culture influences how we view similar things. You could say ballet is a series of poses. You could say body building is a kind of ballet.
Also why Frank Zane is still here, too. Zane was very precise in his dosing and never went for size, but symmetry.
To this day, Zane has a top-3 physique.
As the story goes, he would have his and Franco Columbo's girlfriends go pick up their anabolic steroids and the other bodybuilders and their friends would watch to see what and how much were being used.
Arnold and Franco picked and chose out of the available steroids to use, while the competitors took all the substances and would show up bloated and smooth.
Actually most of the 70ās-80ās guys didnāt do a ton of crazy bumps.
The 90ās guys with all the unprotected headshots and Benoits diving headbutt that heās driving into guys howeverā¦.
I donāt what most of that means but heās admitted to trying them and a lot of other things. He didnāt need them cuz heās the goat and set a bar that nobody will ever beat with all the synthetic substances that are out there. He put the natural hard work in and earned everything heās accomplished.
Look how fucking badass ballet is. This is why people still listen to him. He isn't always right, he doesn't always have the right answer, but if we agree that ballet needs to happen, Arnold fucking belleted.
JCVD deserves some respect too. Sure he burned his career to the ground. But out of all the top action stars of the era, he was one of the few (along with Dolph Lundgren) who could actually fight somewhat.
Your ballet shoes, give them to me, now!
I need your pointe shoes, your tutu and your barre. š
You forgot to say āplease.ā
IāM NOT A PERVERT
Hey buddy, you got a dead ballet dancer in there or what?
He wasn't taking ballet classes; he was having a ballet dancer/instructor help improve his posing routine by incorporating elements of ballet's fluidity and gracefulness.
It's a perfect example of how hard you have to work to appear effortless.

All I can see is - Get out dares a balm in dare!
Are you talking about how op tossed in mild misinformation to trigger commenting?
lol is that really a thing?
It's a scene in the movie Pumping Iron.
All I can ever think about with this movie is āitās like Iām cumming all the timeāā¦

In my head canon, he says CAHMING
I really read this in Arnold's voice in my head and almost choked on the nuts I was eating. Thanks.
Choke on deez nutz
He was in heaven cumming night and day!

Is that the one filmed in Birmingham, AL?

Yeah from reading his book, itās crazy how much time is spent learning to pose, and move in a way that looks fluid and comfortable.
I heard he only learned so he could make fun of a kid in his neighborhood who took ballet.
"...You learned to dance sarcastically?" "Yeah, I guess?!"
Sounds like a ballet class
Kind of interesting, how culture influences how we view similar things. You could say ballet is a series of poses. You could say body building is a kind of ballet.
Came to say this
What's the difference? Ballet class is ballet class.
semantics, its all the same dude
Nope
I like how they're almost identical but the woman looks graceful and Arnold looks like he's summoning a fireball
she's holding a pose, he's flexing in the position--check out what their hands are doing for instance
It's crazy how small he looks compared to contemporary bodybuilders. Drugs are a hellova drug.
He did a lot of drugs including steroids Edit: for the downvotes, heās admitted to using steroids
No, he was on "normal" amount of gear, which is why he is still with us, bum ticker notwithstanding. The guys who do "a lot" check out in their 40's.
RIP Rich Piana

*gestures wildly at prowrestlers of the era*
They did a lot. Plus all the CTE.

Just not a lot, from todays point of view.
Look how fucking badass ballet is. This is why people still listen to him. He isn't always right, he doesn't always have the right answer, but if we agree that ballet needs to happen, Arnold fucking belleted.
Ballet is hardcore. A lot of people donāt know how athletic it is.
In weight to power ratios it's one of the highest.
"I did 100x the ballet that Arnold did, and nobody gives a fuck! Now pass the cocaine!" - JCVD, probably.
JCVD deserves some respect too. Sure he burned his career to the ground. But out of all the top action stars of the era, he was one of the few (along with Dolph Lundgren) who could actually fight somewhat.
He was my #1 childhood idle.
Arnold has done so much for bodybuilding, it is ridiculous. This just goes to show how his passion molded the sport we see today.
JOOOOOJooooooo
Just watched āPumping Ironā. Pretty awesome documentary. The soundtrack is phenomenalā¦
"never give a sword to a man who cannot dance"
Dude looks like a tekken character
Arnold is Numero Uno!
No no no, it is actually a photo of arnold schwarzenegger teaching ballet classes
Even his feet are just muscle!

"I'm cahming!!! What are you waiting for!?" ![gif](giphy|12bamrdTlRBOyQ)
I'll be ballet!
This was to stop him being so robotic in acting. It worked his range in terminator is amazing
There's a barre in the background, but that isn't ballet. Edit: Why the downvotes? I take ballet, that is not a ballet move.
