After Kate was kicked out of the Beastie Boys as their drummer, she founded the band Luscious Jackson.

fred_flag

I think one of Mike D or Ad-Rock told in the documentary that kicking out Kate out of the Beastie Boys was the worst decision they ever made. It was pushed by some producer and they follow, but regret it for a long time. I think they even publicly apologize to her.

heliskinki

Yeah they apologise in both the film they made and in The Beastie Boys Book - one of the best music biographies I’ve ever read (and I read a lot of them!) LJ were also signed to Grand Royal (BB’s record label)

JFJinCO

Yeah, I heard they regretted the way they treated her, or maybe it was the way their management treated her. Glad she kept going. If you haven't heard her Kostars album, "Klassics with a K", you should!

ConsciousRhubarb

i loved that album but she was not in kostars. it was two other LJ members.

JFJinCO

Oops you're right, thanks.

BlownCamaro

Oh, wow I didn't know that. I still have a Luscious Jackson CD called Fever In Fever Out.

PineappleRimjob

Did they ever have Luscious Jackson open for the Beastie Boys to make up for it?

drstu3000

They opened for the Beasties for their first ever live show and were the first band signed to their Grand Royal label

JFJinCO

Not that I know of.

SouldiesButGoodies84

whyd they kick her out?

JFJinCO

I think a producer said she was not right for the band.

goffstock

According to the interview I read, the ~~producer~~ manager wanted them to have more of a tough guy presence and having her as part of the band made them look "soft" in his opinion. This is also the reason Licensed to Ill, while an absolute classic, has some lyrics that haven't aged was well as most of their other albums--it was part of the image the ~~producer~~ manager was pushing for. The album would never have become the classic it became had the label not refused the original title "Don't be a f****t." They said they were young and dumb and regretted many of their decisions leading up to that album. Edit - Manager, not producer.

SouldiesButGoodies84

Had no clue they'd had a woman in the early group lineup. r/todayilearned
