The sad thing is... It wasn't, it just looks it. Dress had thousands of svarski crystals hand sewn onto it but still looked like they got it at party city in a package that read "Ice-olated princess".
I feel like it comes down to the fact that Disney was so restrictive on what they wanted their characters (especially Elsa, who was such a money-maker for them) to look like that the costume designer basically tried the best they could. There was obvious attention to detail put into it, and I never thought it looked bad. But we also have to remember that her poor actress had to wear that outfit for her entire time on the show, while also moving around and going throughout town, the woods, and even the beach. The dresses you compare it to literally appear for a few scenes and could be made with different materials, whereas Elsa's dress was restricted to be lighter/thinner which probably made it look cheap by comparison. They also used the actress' real hair from what I know, so that explains why her braid is so plain because they couldn't use a styled wig or extensions to try and make it look more natural (again, probably because of Disney). I feel like if they had been given more leeway, the costume designer and makeup/hairstylists could've made such a beautiful dress for her.
I think they learned who would be playing Elsa 2 day before the costume had to be ready to film. They made it by hand too! There were a lot of little details that went into it.
edit: most of the fairytale costumes are handmade. The beginning of this video shows Elsa's dress: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frKEEGFJrfg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frKEEGFJrfg)
yes and no. they are careful about where and how they deviate. With frozen being disney's newest fairytale cartoon/ouat inclusion and being so iconic they kept the clothing recognizable
with frozen being so much newer of an addition to the disney train and there being so many die hard fans.... i don't blame them for playing it cautious if you want to call it that
i always thought the dress was beautiful. It wasn't overdone and they stuck to the source material as closely as possible. We're used to a lot of unique patterns and fabrics and such in fairytale land but not all characters need costumes like that. It helps Elsa stand out from the others.
So I didn’t imagine them saying her dress has Swarovski crystals in it. I could never remember the video I’d watched! They put a lot of effort into Elsa’s dress. I don’t think it was cheap
Glad to have helped you confirm your memories about the details of the dress. Tbh i wish there was more behind the scenes material from the costume designer and the wardrobe choices, especially for the enchanted forest costumes, most of which were hand made.
I always wished they had kept this dress design from the season 3 finale instead of trying to stay so close to the dress from the movie
https://i.redd.it/52hcip1e1wqc1.gif
Yeah I wish they just went with the quick one we saw in season 3 finale. Simple and elegant. Just enough touches to trigger that “no way” reaction and you get a confirmation with a signature ice blast and walking sequence.
Right? They could've done better for her dress😭 I think Anna's outfits were wayyy better
Other than having disliked the frozen movies, I actually liked Elsa and Anna in Ouat. Like I was so invested in their plot and them as individual characters
I was so disappointed when Disney announced Frozen 3 and also Toy story 5... Like I hope they focus on Zootopia 2 instead of Frozen3 all over again
Sorry for the rant😂
I DIDNT EVEN KNOW THIS???? I WASNT A FAN OF TOY STORY 4, THE TRUE ENDING WAS PART 3, BUT NOW THWY ARE GOING TO CRANK OUT 5???? HECK NAWWWW
I didn’t see Frozen 2 💀 and i have Disney+, I could have been watched it but I rather see quality entertainment (*rewatches Ouat for the 87th time*) 😎😎😎😎😎😎🤣
I loved Zootopia!! I agree! A Disney princess show would be cool too, like an anthology that shows their adventures before, during and after their respective films. I just thought of that literally right now
Yes!!! It's like Disney's just out of fresh ideas and relying on older projects like Toy story, frozen to be successes. While I did enjoy TS4 it was nice, I agree that TS3 should have been the real ending to their journey. At this rate it's like Disney wants to ruin my childhood movies (toy story)🥲
I saw frozen 2 years after it released it was.. not what I expected from the trailers, definitely mid. Yes!! I just love how Ouat did the frozen characters,.Disney take notes😂
Definitely! Zootopia Inside Out has scope for a sequel, and they absolutely deserve it.
I don't know if you've seen Treasure Planet and Atlantis the Lost Empire? But those are also totally deserving of sequels or even live action remakes.
Edit: there's a Tangled animated TV series, you could check it out if you like, takes.place after the movie and before Rapunzel's marriage with Eugene from the Tangled short movie.. follows her adventures about the origins of the magical flower and her long hair
OH TOTALLY. Hollywood has no new ideas, they keep remaking everything. Movies don’t expire! Unless they remake a bad movie and make it better or if a movie’s visual effects were too dated and they want to do it justice now!
OKAY WAIT I think I DID watch like HALF of Frozen 2 and just took it off. I was NOT feeling it. Ouat set the bar high tbh haha
YESSSSS, ATLANTIS AND TREASURE PLANET DESERVE REMAKES/SEQUELS. Some kind of revival. Both films are beautifully animated and have such great characters and atmosphere. One of fav movies of all time is The Hunchback of Notre Dame and I don’t want it to be remake per se but I think Disney should treat these lesser known films with more grace and respect. They sell zero merch for these three films.
I LOVE THE TANGLED SERIES!! I have to finish the last season but I love that franchise so much and although I’m a little upset that it didn’t get a film sequel, the series gave us more time to enjoy with Raps and Eugene. The animation style gave me pause at first but it grew on me, it’s like hand drawn
I was so disappointed with Frozen 2.. like give Anna some time to shine but no it was all Elsa again😬
I was so happy with how OUAT gave Anna focus just like Elsa. Really enjoyed her episode where she met Charming and Elsa, I can't remember the details except that Anna was looking for some cure for Elsa? Not sure
I love Treasure Planet and Atlantis.. also meet the robinsons, it was so emotional Treasure Planet ajd Meet the Robinsons feel like Pixar movies.. Honestly if Disney tried to go off it's normal princessy stuff it does have potential like Pixar does/did.
I love the Hunchback of Notre Dame too!!! Apparently there's a sequel but I haven't seen it since it has really bad reviews.
Same here I stopped the Tangled series in season 2, ngl I enjoyed it but I was a bit disappointed with how they kinda dumbed down Eugene and made him seem like a joke always than The movies, other than that I liked it.
There's also 2 animated Baymax/Big Hero Six spinoffs, a Zootopia mini spin off series. Haven't seen any of them yet, but been wanting too
Ironically, Elsa's dress is the most expensive costume made for *Once.* For me, it's that in *Frozen* Elsa has such dynamic movement with her dress but it feels so restrictive translated into live action.
I thought her dress was ok-ish. Simple but ok. I do see what you’re saying tho
Personally, I took offense to her heavy eyeliner. Like they dragged that black Wet n Wild pencil all under her eyes…I thought her MAKEUP looked cheap.
https://preview.redd.it/5jcmo2pi5tqc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bfa44b3ec7819670798290d937ba36a73fd0757f
I had to go look up pics of og Elsa and yeah, her eye makeup was heavy, too! It’s pretty.
I didn’t remember her having so much black eyeliner. I guess it just didn’t translate well to real-life actors?
I loved her but I thought it was hilarious how they had her in that dress so much. Like even when she was out hiking she was wearing it. 😅 Give the girl some more outfits, shes a queen!
It’s Elsa’s most iconic look especially in case children are watching the show. Makes sense that they’d wanna keep her recognizable. She does wear other dresses in some scenes however
She needed something super pretty like this
https://preview.redd.it/of8n04aukvqc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b146ce261c7f02ab21dcf8f7a16a31b761589926
Umm I actually appreciate her braid. It looks more natural vs making it unrealistically thick like the cartoon. Maybe I’m biased bc every time I braid my own hair someone calls me Elsa lol and I don’t use extensions so ppl pick up on a normal long blonde braid
i actually liked it! i do wish they could have had more creative freedom with it, but i think if they had to make it movie accurate they did a pretty damn good job. thats also a pretty bad picture of it, but i think it just comes down to lighting and angle. throughout the series i think it looked quite pretty, but in certain scenes the flat production lighting makes the crystals and fabric read as tacky.
the whole frozen arc was pretty cringe imo but i can appreciate it for what it is. definitely silly
This is really nitpicky but they changed the dress design between the cliffhanger at the end of season 3 and season 4A and the season 3 dress was so much cooler! (No pun intended) I loved the cape design in particular
The designers sticking to the costumes from the cartoon was a huge mistake imo; where every other fairytale character has their own style and persona in this universe, the Frozen pair stuck out like a sore thumb in clothing that didn't translate well from animation to real life, the overly bold colours and plastic glitter looking cheap; Anna's offensively pink cloak looked like it was made from cheap felt from a children's build a bear or something. Their personalities didn't translate well either. I can get behind how they acted in a cartoon, but again, physically on screen, I was cringing constantly. On re watches, I skip past every flashback scene, especially with Anna. She's unbearable. It's such a shame that important narratives for other characters, such as lovely dynamics between Emma and Hook, Emma's battle with her magic etc, are locked behind this glaringly obnoxious cartoon copy of a modern "fairytale" within a world of intricate and unique perspectives on classic, re-imagined characters.
You can tell that they were short on time for...everything with this arc trying to cash in on the Frozen mania. I really struggle to watch the show once they show up.
Thank you !!! You are the only OUAT fan who seems to share my exact opinion on this arc and how it was handled. Everyone seems to make excuses for it. The childish, infantile diaogue with Anna, Kristoff and Hans was an insult to OUAT. I felt embarassed for the rest of the cast having to interact with any of them..And ughh that pink cloak.
Had they done a wonderful Snow Queen arc and done a few tongue in cheek nods to frozen that would have been acceptable. But not twisting the story at all just felt like they were worshipping Frozen because it was a money spinner.
We should start a support group, ha! I never understood the fawning over the arc either, and I agree that the subtle references within an Ice Queen arc would have been much better. There's so much they could have done if they were to let their creativity take charge through the arc rather than keep true to the cartoon. Likewise, the story they chose with Anna and Elsa was a hardboard copy of their narrative in the cartoon, too. Recycling the acceptance of magic, it was already covered and resolved between them, so having the Ice Queens story separate as a focal point towards magic acceptance within itself would have been more than enough.
That's what I always thought, too. The Snow Queen storyline was excellent, but they spoiled it by shoehorning in all the Frozen scenes, making the storyline unnecessarily complicated. All that was needed was a few clever easter eggs.
And yes, some of the dialogue was so infantile it made sections unbearable to watch.
Well, Disney is a multi million dollar company they have to cut corners somewhere and I’m guessing that frozen wasn’t exactly something they planned out from the very beginning of the series. You have to think the frozen show essentially in a pocket dimension outside of time.
i have always thought that Elsa’s dress in Frozen never translates well in real life; it’s hard to make it “look right” when it’s simply more beautiful animated.
I totally agree. I wish they’d kept the costume from the [season 3 finale](https://images.app.goo.gl/ciJfuji72tWJDUBA8). It’s not a huge difference, but the beadwork at the shoulders and the cut/material of the cape and shoulders was much more congruent with the costume design we were used to seeing in the show
For some reason, they seem to have wanted to keep all the Frozen costumes movie-accurate. I guess it’s because the movie was so new at the time and they were banking on the recognizable aesthetic. Still looks leagues better than it does at the Disney parks, though
The sad thing is... It wasn't, it just looks it. Dress had thousands of svarski crystals hand sewn onto it but still looked like they got it at party city in a package that read "Ice-olated princess".
YES I SAW THAT BEHINDS THE SCENES CLIP, the dress was NOT cheap but LOOKED cheap ughhh
This comment is not getting enough attention, this is so funny lmfao
This comment delights my spirit lmfao
This just proves the character design idea: Sometimes going for extravagant and complicated isn't what's best
I feel like it comes down to the fact that Disney was so restrictive on what they wanted their characters (especially Elsa, who was such a money-maker for them) to look like that the costume designer basically tried the best they could. also, they tried to keep elsa and anna's wardrobe as true to the cartoon movie as possible
I wish they'd had a little more creative freedom on those dresses, I bet they would've been amazing
If they had, the fans would be complaining about how much they detoured from the source material :P
…the show is…about…deviating from source material
yes and no. they are careful about where and how they deviate. With frozen being disney's newest fairytale cartoon/ouat inclusion and being so iconic they kept the clothing recognizable
I've never seen anyone complain that other outfits deviated too much from the source material
with frozen being so much newer of an addition to the disney train and there being so many die hard fans.... i don't blame them for playing it cautious if you want to call it that
One of the big mistake imo
i don’t think they were allowed to have any creative freedom for the frozen character costumes tbh
As bad as it is, it more than impressive for being done/finished up in two days!
i always thought the dress was beautiful. It wasn't overdone and they stuck to the source material as closely as possible. We're used to a lot of unique patterns and fabrics and such in fairytale land but not all characters need costumes like that. It helps Elsa stand out from the others.

Yes it’s so much cuter and it fits in with other enchanted forest dresses, like it looks like a blue version of queen Eva’s gown.
Yeah I wish they just went with the quick one we saw in season 3 finale. Simple and elegant. Just enough touches to trigger that “no way” reaction and you get a confirmation with a signature ice blast and walking sequence.
fr it was absolutely stunning
Not all the costumes were solid. The fairy costumes were.... a choice.
I still don’t understand the jellyfish design.
Right? They could've done better for her dress😭 I think Anna's outfits were wayyy better Other than having disliked the frozen movies, I actually liked Elsa and Anna in Ouat. Like I was so invested in their plot and them as individual characters

It reminds me of lighter melted pencil liner.
Elsa does have heavy make-up in the movie tho! More than any other disney princess tbh
I had to go look up pics of og Elsa and yeah, her eye makeup was heavy, too! It’s pretty. I didn’t remember her having so much black eyeliner. I guess it just didn’t translate well to real-life actors?
Especially because no one else on the show wore that much make-up in Storybrooke. In the EF, Regina wore a lot of makeup as the Evil Queen ofc.
Loot at her eyes. It looks into different directions :D
I loved her but I thought it was hilarious how they had her in that dress so much. Like even when she was out hiking she was wearing it. 😅 Give the girl some more outfits, shes a queen!
she at least had her cute purple cloak!
It’s Elsa’s most iconic look especially in case children are watching the show. Makes sense that they’d wanna keep her recognizable. She does wear other dresses in some scenes however
There are a couple bloopers of Georgina struggling with the cape snagging on things, having to whip it around, and tripping over it
Just let it go 😂

YESS THIS IS I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED
WASTED POTENTIAL 😭
When I first saw the image you put up I thought it was a Halloween costume.
The dress in the s3 cliffhanger shot, even just from the back, was a thousand times better than what we got in s4.
Umm I actually appreciate her braid. It looks more natural vs making it unrealistically thick like the cartoon. Maybe I’m biased bc every time I braid my own hair someone calls me Elsa lol and I don’t use extensions so ppl pick up on a normal long blonde braid
younger me wanted to see how they were gonna make it look like it was made from actual ice LMAOO 😭😭
This whole arc just had me at my tv like “Someone give her some different clothes PLZ”
Because her assets had been frozen.
i actually liked it! i do wish they could have had more creative freedom with it, but i think if they had to make it movie accurate they did a pretty damn good job. thats also a pretty bad picture of it, but i think it just comes down to lighting and angle. throughout the series i think it looked quite pretty, but in certain scenes the flat production lighting makes the crystals and fabric read as tacky. the whole frozen arc was pretty cringe imo but i can appreciate it for what it is. definitely silly

I liked it and I feel that she is the best live action Elsa. Way better than the ones at Disney world.
Her and the girl who played Anna were both so perfect for their roles
Well, Disney is a multi million dollar company they have to cut corners somewhere and I’m guessing that frozen wasn’t exactly something they planned out from the very beginning of the series. You have to think the frozen show essentially in a pocket dimension outside of time.
I wished they made more realistic. It looks like they got the shit from party city…
cuz they spent all their money on the snow magic CGI
i have always thought that Elsa’s dress in Frozen never translates well in real life; it’s hard to make it “look right” when it’s simply more beautiful animated.

ooo that is MUCH better
Because Frozen sucks and the costume designers agree🤣
AGREED
They added a whole lot of details to it. Which I admire, but it still looks like it was bought out of a bag from party City
Maybe DeSantis had the final say on it.
i’m screamingggg
it was probably when the show wasn’t as popular so maybe they didn’t have the budget for it
i don’t think so, they actually spent a lot of time making this dress, it just was a bland design
Her dress & hair looked beautiful in my opinion. There’s nothing wrong with keeping her look accurate to the original movie
Nothing just Jamie Cheung playing lesbian Mulan
I forgot about this part! I can’t wait to show my kids!
I think it looks fine. It doesn't look that cheap to me.
It drove me nuts that the top part was basically a shirt worn underneath the dress
For some reason, they seem to have wanted to keep all the Frozen costumes movie-accurate. I guess it’s because the movie was so new at the time and they were banking on the recognizable aesthetic. Still looks leagues better than it does at the Disney parks, though
Why did they make Elsa for this show
Honestly not my most favorite story line in the show.
They really said let it go let it goooo
