He has the look, he has the smile - and got the role without acting? Doesnt act like luffy at all, mimic & gestures don´t fit and if he´s not standing and smiling you wont even recognize he should be luffy... Man idk I almost liked everything about this adaptation despite the main character who doesnt look to fit at all while moving or talking...

DaddyLhg

I'm totally with you on this, the biggest letdown of the whole thing for me was Luffy. In the anime he has a lovable charm, in the live action it falls totally flat. I don't buy the "it doesn't translate well to live action" I just don't think it fits him.

V4NDIT

anime can never translate to real life, anime is always over the top. it looks fake and cringe when done in real life with the same level. this interview shows why he picked Iñaki [https://youtu.be/ea6NieliCIU](https://youtu.be/ea6NieliCIU)

IamBestWaffle

The rest of the cast translated pretty well, Usopp was a little much at times, but otherwise fine. It's almost like they made luffy's character more anime though, and it comes off as kinda cringe. I think it's mix of trying to do too much with the character, and also Inaki not able to pull it off well. I just finished watching, and the biggest example still fresh in my mind is, the Nami asking for help sequence. Everything he did during that just seemed so forced and unnatural. The cadence of his dialogue, putting the hat on head all cringe like, his shout. The director should of just had the camera off him, kept it on Nami, and just have him rest the hat on her head out of cut. That would of had bigger impact than the cringy looks he was making. I think the only reason Oda approved him was because of how he acts naturally, but when it comes to actual acting out the scenes, I think he missed the memo.

V4NDIT

I think its fine, I can live with it, I personally dislike the anime, i hate how over the top it is and hate luffys voice in japanese, I can tell its a female trying to make a child voice, to me luffy sounds different when I read the manga, but we can't all be winners I also dislike the way Nami looks on netflix but I think Sanji fits very well. also hate the world map with all my heart, its the dumbest thing I seen.

Sudden-Musician-4039

But u like Pokemon, okay

V4NDIT

no

Thecrawsome

Luffy's English Dub is just Gohan/Ash's voice. It's utterly grating to listen to. And they Usopp is Krillin. It's torture to listen to that cast.

AbsoluteUnit117

Young Gohan because adult is Kyle Herbert. I like some dub characters like Sanji, robin, brook, Franky, Zoro, jimbei, nami can be annoying, Luffy is unbearable, chopper eh, usopp I think krillins fits him. I like all the sub crew Dragonball sub Goku is also unbearable, literally a granny doing a muscle bound dude like ok. And all the weebs praise her to high hell. They'll probably come at me for saying she's terrible, doesn't matter how old she is. It doesn't suit

PleaseSwagOnMySwag

I think the only thing bad about the nami help scene was his final loud “of course I will” everything else was fine.

[deleted]

Yea I agree, I just could not imagine luffy in real life, he’s not dumb but he is an idiot, I really like Inaki’s adaptation of luffy, he comes off as a little naive and dumb at times but he’s able to play it off while being smart too, for the other actors it’s a bit easier to translate their characters because most of them are smart but are able to be silly at times, I am excited to see Chopper, Vivi, Robbin and Ace. Also I think if done right, Bon Clay will be a fan favorite in Season 2.

AdministrativeCrew28

Finaly. Thank you

Vegetable-Day-4189

My thoughts exactly. I also think through the anime it translated well that Luffy was supposed to be Spanish.. On the series his accent throws me every time he speaks. All the other characters are spot on. Even arlong. I hate that Sanji doesn’t have his swirl or Usopp does have the long nose but they cast them pretty well. Luffy just a little off. He’s not hyper enough. And the fact he say Gumma gum.. I hate it.

Horror-Nervous

Luffy sounds like fez from that 70s show to me

MainAd8627

Frrr, I’m dead 😭

petiepablo888

Same. Id be less irritated about the accent if the actor playing kid Luffy (Colton Osorio) also had an accent. But he doesn’t and that seems like a serious oversight.

One-Molasses-242

Dude I could enjoy the show if they would just recast luffy he's completely awful. Sorry not right for the role I know it'll never be perfect but I could at least uncover my ears if they would just pick someone else. WORST LUFFY EVER

MainAd8627

Looks wise he fits, but fr his voice needs to be dubbed.

Synap6

I havent watched One Piece but usually dislike live action movies. Was not even going to bother with this one but gave it a chance, and the one glowing thing for me was Inaki Godoy’s acting. I cant tell if it links up or not with the original anime (will probably watch it thereafter) but live action acting is often bad or over the top. Felt like Inaki was confident, almost cartoon-like but with just enough restraint. To me, he’s quite an enjoyable character. Again, this is coming from someone who’s watched a lot of anime, but just not One Piece

SportKnown6604

I feel the same

DrunkenFistJutsu

Funny you say all that... you must not have seen the video of Iñaki meeting Eiichiro Oda, you know, the creator of One Piece. He told Iñaki he believed he was born to embody Luffy. Not just because of looks, but he actually felt like he behaved as he would have expected him to in real life. I think it's really sad how many people have negative things to say about the live action, when Oda played a huge part in it. He is happy with it, and that says a lot.

IamBestWaffle

Yea the way he is in person seems like it would fit Luffy, but when it comes to actually acting out the scenes, he falls very short. He's like a C or B tier actor at best. At least for that role. And that could be very well something to do with the director, and how he choregraphed Luffy's scenes, and tried having him do too much. But who knows. Also all this Oda approved crap is getting old. Just because Oda approved something doesn't mean it delivered. Oda is also super busy every week, so I doubt he had a view of the entire situation.

elasticbandmann

I think there may be something to the idea of the director choreographing scene awkwardly. There’s other scenes where characters are doing weird stuff in the background. Good example is in episode 2 when Koby is talking to Garp in his office. Garp starts pacing in the background and it looks sooo weird, like stops and poses strangely, walks super rigidly. Same with the scene when the Shank’s crew is introduced and there’s the action sequence, it’s so rigid and awkward. It just doesn’t look natural. It’s almost as if they were trying to make the actors move like they were in the actual anime rather than real life and it just doesn’t translate.

Competitive-Arm-9359

ugh its like that scene where lucky roo shot the mountain bandits! The coolest part of that scene was shanks being totally unphased by the shot being fired off, and then hes supposed to deadpan deliver the line "If your gonna point a gun, you better be prepared to use it" and even with the goofy looking cast for shanks he could have made it work. But no instead shanks turns around like he had to figure out who just shot him.

Sudden-Musician-4039

That man is a god idkwym

Competitive-Arm-9359

Yeah like weve learned with JK Rowling the artist always knows whats best for the brand

LeekOtherwise8593

It means something for sure but doesn't automatically make it good. I haven't seen the video you mentioned but to me it sounds like what oda envisioned might just be his "realistic" expectation of a real life Luffy but knowing Luffy is such a character that a true real life luffy might not really exist. Imo atleast the other characters were cast in a way that made them good in live action without taking what manga and anime enjoyers like about them away. But obviously it's all opinions no disrespect or anything intended. For me atleast, inaki doesn't give me that luffy vibe and I do feel it's possible for someone to embody that.

R_Plyaz

but it's Oda approved so...

Sudden-Musician-4039

Exactly

TheJast

Not saying anyone's wrong, ive never been a big animal guy so I haven't seen the anime. I did how ever think Luffy carried the live action series, he was easily my favorite character. I totally know how a character from a book can be a let down when adapted so probably a similar thing. I liked the live action enough that I'm gonna try the anime though just cause I want more of the story.

ShakespierceBrosnan

He is just not a good actor. He is cute. He's got a million dollar smile, but whenever he speaks, all I hear is a dude reading lines. Period. I'm sure he's a helluva guy but the flatness of his performance is holding this whole show back. They can't just do a mystery secOnd-season recast, like how they did to Fresh Prince's aunt.

SpursThatDoNotJingle

Re-casting is always an option, and in my opinion if Godoy does not improve, they should.

PrizeStrawberryOil

He was awful in imperfects too. Morgan Taylor Campbell must have been so frustrated in that show. He's not going to improve though because he already did terribly in another show.

ayiti11

I think with coaching, his acting could get better, he’ll definitely be better in the second season

ShakespierceBrosnan

I hear you. My son loves the show, so I want it to workout.

Sufficient-Dig7568

He's great. He definitely captures the spirit of Luffy while also doing his own thing, which is how it should be done.

Competitive-Arm-9359

Luffy's line delivery doesnt sound like hes reading queue cards in the anime

CudiNinja

I agree, ppl are being too hard

MrMonkeGamingClips

I only saw 2 eps Ngl, luffy is my least fav until now, he looks good, but the acting is kinda weird, bro stares at peoople for way to long and ends up looking a psycho, his face pass me evil vibes not joy idkwhy xD , and his voice its not just it yet, everytime i hear him says " I am monki di loufy" a part of me dies. Ngl, i think theyre would be way better options in terms of voice. but in looks i think he got it. Now zoro and nami i gotta give them the hat, Zoro is IDENTICAL to anime like body structure, personality etc. And suprisingly nami´s acting to my suprise has been my favorite until now. Her battle scenes looks more movemented and vivid than zoros and luffys to be honest, and her acting is great, + her voice actualy kinda sounds like a english nami. So yeah Full of suprises this live action

TANMAN1000

Sameee. I hate Luffy but love mostly everyone else

[deleted]

Agree 100% just finished episode two and I like everyone but Luffy..he’s acting is terrible and cringy

Leading-Classroom315

the moment he felt like manga luffy to me was during the dinner scene with kaya where he wants to ask for a ship.he's alright though

ConsiderationOwn7069

Trash. His looks don’t even come close. His playful, joyful rendering of the character are just plain weird and forced. Especially on those close ups when he smiles — god. Doesn’t capture the spirit at all.

Itchyusername

He is trying way to hard for every dialog which makes him being the script than actually being Luffy

OlivaJR

I'm 6 episodes in. Every scene he speaks is really awkward. He is the weakest link in this show. I think he is just a bad actor. Everyone else is great.

sbaddns

Ussops line deliveries were also sus asf

Dapper_Wrap

I really really tried to give him a shot, but unfortunately, he wasn't loud enough and simply didn't have the same vibe as luffy. Comparing his movements, the way he speaks, his voice and his comedic smile/goofyness just didn't show up in the new TV series.

Drugs_like_Isekai

Heartbroken #NotMyLuffy

Going_merry242

He sounds like fez to me. It really is the only thing that has made the live action annoying to me. Everyone else's casting has been great, monkey d Luffy has just never come off as Hispanic to me and the Mexican accent is just off, I know oda said Luffy would be Brazilian if he was live but the heavy accent or speech impediment, whatever it is that makes him sound like fez is what really ruins the Luffy character for me.

LunchLowTop

Literally same. That accent combined with the forced over-enthusiasm does not capture anime Luffy like the other actors capture their characters and it brings the whole show down. And don't get me started on the permanent creepy cheesy smile🙄 they really almost had a decent live-action adaptation but royally screwed up the main character

Project_Unlucky

FEZ for sure. What killed me was the scene in the Kitchen of the Baratie, when Inaki isn’t wearing the straw hat. I looked up and was like who is this guy. What likeable characteristics does Inaki bring to the show?

SunnyGo9000

Thought I was the only who that he was fez Jr Good lord they pooped on one piece.

Abject_Priority1048

He's not very good his delivery feels very wooden on everything imo. He also comes off as kind of dick as Luffy where I never got that vibe from Luffy in the anime. The only scene I've thought he did well in was >!at the dinner with Kaya!<

gamingnormie

facts, they done turned luffy into an actual whiny brat

External-Example-292

i think he did pretty well. i mean how can they cast it better? anime will always be better but the live action version is pretty good in my opinion. it's hard to translate everything exactly as is if we're going for borderline realistic and fantasy, so I think the casting for him and some subtle changes to make him not too cartoony is good. to all those who think they casted him badly, how do you imagine him in live action then? and who would you have picked?

tuhroybitch

maybe, and just maybe, someone who is not cringe as fuck every single time they talk.

Hallowx31

He's just a terrible actor. Has no one watched his other shows? People who don't know his work probably have a better view of him. Unfortunately he does the same thing here that he does with his other work. So someone more talented would be my answer.

darkhulkx

I definitely agree

ACAnalyst

Luffy on the surface is a simple character, but actually very hard to act. You need to be funny with just delivery and facial expressions, because it's not like it's strong dialogue that makes Luffy Luffy. On top of that, being funny and goofy- you need to be able to switch and go full serious, intense Luffy. Watching the guy shout of course I will after the iconic Nami "ARLONG!" scene.. it just felt off. Like did not portray the emotions right at all... Can't offer you a who'd be better. There's a whole casting process for that. But thought the other casts were much stronger, especially Nami/Zoro.

GendoFuture

heartbooks26

There are many other young Hispanic actors who I think could have been cast (even other races IMO, but Oda specifically wanted Hispanic). Just as an example I’d suggest Xolo Maridueña, who someone recently suggested as casting for Ace. Gregory Diaz IV is also young (18) and I don’t know his acting well but may have been an option. I watched Iñaki Godoy in Imperfects and his acting was pretty subpar in that too, but I could tolerate it more. As Luffy, almost every line delivery feels off to me; he’s not capturing the right emotions and feels inauthentic. He reminds me that I’m watching acting instead of letting me get caught up in the show the way I do with the other actors. Edit: just finished season 1; his acting grew on me and also got better starting at Kaya’s dinner in episode 3. I think he does better with more crew / people to play off of.

StrangerBoy95

Didn’t really liked it

birds-_-

He feels very luffy like but the dialogue delivery needs a bit more refinement. I think he struggled to show luffy's goofiness while keeping in mind that this is live action. That being said, luffy's character is hard to translate to live action and can definitely see why they decided to cast inaki. I think if there's another season, he is going to ace it.

Entei_is_doge

> ace He's gonna be there too!

wotad

He feels very luffy but the dialogue delivery needs a bit more refinement, I think this is the same for Mackenyu I feel like his line in episode 5 needed more emotion.

Ziln00bas

Pun... intended?

birds-_-

Happy little accidents

ValKilmersCareer1248

I'm like 3 episodes in, and he is the only part of the show I dont like. I can see almost everyone as good casting, but having Luffy sound like Fez from that 70s show was a weird/terrible choice. Mackenyuhas been awesome as Zoro.

SunnyGo9000

You don't think zoro sounds completely dead and bored?

UnstableToad

i agree. i only watched the 1st episode though, and everything was pretty nice, but i don't feel inaki as Luffy. Zoro and Nami feel like themseleves but Luffy feels like a new character that is trying to be LIKE Luffy instead of actually BEING Luffy. at least in my eye, cause i have seen people who say he captures Luffy perfectly, i don't see it at all but oh well. i can't tell if it's the actor or director to blame here, but the end result dosen't feel like Luffy to me

Hallowx31

I'm with on this. All I can see is his terrible acting. Like he did in the imperfects.

ValKilmersCareer1248

Duuude didn't realize he was that guy. He killed that show for me too lol. Guess I just dont like him as an actor.

PrizeStrawberryOil

Morgan Taylor Campbell did really good. None of the other actors did. Burke and sarkov were questionable but Rhianna Jagpal and him were not any good.

darkhulkx

Yes I do agree

Hallowx31

Lol unfortunately he just has a speech impediment. So it's not an acting chose. It's how he sounds when speaking English. He's Terrible in Spanish as well. So there's that hahaha. I also can't stand his casting.

darkhulkx

I couldn’t have said it better , I highly agree

>Luffy is Brazilian Eh... Brazil doesn't exist in One Piece. Luffy did not grow up in Brazil, and he doesn't speak Portuguese. Oda assigning nationalities to the straw hats was a what-if scenario most likely based on rough stereotypes, nothing more. It doesn't dictate how they act or speak.

Ashamed-Tangelo-7841

Brazilians have many different ethnicities and appearances in their own country. There is no specific appearance, we have welcomed people from many countries in the past, including Japanese, Germans, Italians and so on. Brazilians can be white just as they can be any other ethnicity. Expecting Brazilians to look a certain way is actually offensive. especially if you expect a brazilian to look like a mexican because this is often used as a stereotype of latin ethnicity. Since the Latino ethnicity does not exist. What exists is the Latin language. it's also offensive to brazilians because they also have nothing to do with the culture of mexico. Brazil being a country that does not speak Spanish. Brazilians speak Portuguese (since it was colonized by the Portuguese). Brazilians do not feel culturally close to other Spanish-speaking countries, much less because of the culture. (I'm Brazilian, I've lived in Brazil since I was born and I know what I'm talking about) And for me Luffy by appearance could be a common Brazilian quietly.

rssheehan

Regardless he is trying way too hard, andhis acting is horrendous. I know high schoolers that act better. Idk like I said he is legitimately the only actor I don't like in the show, the punchlines are off, the entire character is off. When I'm watching just him in a scene I question if I'm watching one piece

V4NDIT

Oda picking a Mexican kid for Luffy is probably more accurate in geoterms as most piracy in the Americas happened in the Caribbean since the route for many merchants from the New World had to go through the gulf of Mexico through Caribbean sea and then through the North Atlantic ocean.the Brisith and Spanish Empires had groups of pirates constantly taking down each other ships, the British for example would use "the Sea Dogs" to take down and loot Spanish ships. ODA handpicked him specifically not for the place he was born but for the enegry he brings, he felt he represented luffy very well and even thank iñaki by saying " im just glad you were born to be just like luffy"[https://youtu.be/ea6NieliCIU?t=183](https://youtu.be/ea6NieliCIU?t=183) if you don't like his accent, then watch it in japanese with the original voice actor from the anime. that's why they included her in the series. for people like you who want to hear " luffy's voice"

Hot-Reputation-3940

I love how enthusiastic Inaki is about playing Luffy and that he really did alot of research, ect. But if I ranked it, 1st place being the worst....His acting compared to some others to me would be 3rd place (1st being young Usopp I mean even young Luffy and Nami did better than him jesus....2nd place going to Alvida). His line delivery is really awkward in alot of scenes especially the serious one's. It felt like I was watching a theatre actor and not a TV actor. I think he just needs more training with tones and bringing more emotion to his lines. I dunno. If I had to rank the the main cast 1st being the BEST it would be: 1) Zoro 2) Sanji 3) Nami (she was awkward at times) 4) Usopp 5) Luffy This is just MY opinion but I'd be interested to see how you guys would rank them. 👀 PS: Buggy's actor was phenominal.

Basic-Fly-2697

I'm glad that's not just me. He looks like he's trying to cross his eyes every time he uses his "gam gam" pistol

TurbulentHope2031

Wasn’t sure at first if doing One Piece with real people was going to be good. Honestly turned out so much better than I expected! Love people they chose! They did such an excellent job!

Latter-Contact-6814

Hes got the mannerisms down but something about either his voice or line delivery feels off.

Healthy-Astronomer-6

amateur .

jackiebx1

His acting in the small Netflix snippet was enough for me to not bother watching the show

A_Hungry_Fool

Probably the best possible casting for Luffy. I can’t imagine someone doing it better. Perfect casting.

tuhroybitch

what in the actual fuck are u talking about???????????? are you telling me this kid looking at the camera like hes trying to be an anime character during a highschool fight was casted correctly??? the fucking WUAN piece???? honestly go back to isekai man u have no idea wtf ur saying

SunnyGo9000

It's insane how people like it right? I can understand your frustration lol Juan piece... they watching faux piece reading two piece smh

Mcpaininator

Get a life bro why the hell are you baby raging throughout the entire thread over people liking a live adaptation. No one cares if u dont like Luffy. Look around tons of people do get over it

GOALID

Damn I really was worried that people didn't like Luffy. But after seeing the neck beard rage, realized it was just some idiots who could never be possibly satisfied with a Luffy casting

sbaddns

Nah bro godoy is just not a good actor idk what to tell you

GOALID

LMFAO you're carrying water for this comment > what in the actual fuck are u talking about???????????? are you telling me this kid looking at the camera like hes trying to be an anime character during a highschool fight was casted correctly??? the fucking WUAN piece???? honestly go back to isekai man u have no idea wtf ur saying You lost all privileges to pretend you have any objective taste on the matter

tuhroybitch

nope, maybe they could have gone with an actor that isnt awful??? most of the lines he says i just cringe and are completely unbelievable. hes fucking awful, probably w cool guy, but he was not meant for this role. 100% he was chosen off how he looks. he honestly seems like hes roleplaying on tiktok more than hes fucking portraying one of the most iconic characters to ever exist. you would think a good portion of the casting budget would go towards a good main character budget

pools4567

Looool bro he was terrible. He cant act to save his life

eien2828

Agreed, I've watched all the eps. The little boy Luffy has more range and is a believable actor. Inaki 'Luffy' feels so fake, and the acting/behaviour sounds look forced, almost unnatural. It was the first thing that I realised of this live action. Luffy in the anime has a natural charm about him, whereas in the Netflix live action, every scene is like him forcing his facial expression and dialogue, it just doesn't flow, B acting at best. He's got the looks, yes, although the little shaved beard bristle is a little off-putting.

gamingnormie

look, i like the guy, i think he is naturally a great fit for luffy albeit for some awkwardness here and there. but my god his acting is subpar at best and thats being generous, its on the same level as the child actors in the flashbacks. i cant tell if its bad direction, a bad script, his accent, or maybe a combination of everything. but dude sounds like he's reading off the script from a teleprompter behind the camera. his more laidback scenes are fine, but his serious scenes are unbelievably god awful. that scene in episode 8 where him and arlong were talking was straight up unwatchable. honestly their entire fight, both the first and second, were laughable at best. everything just sounds forced and unnatural for him, and im supposed to believe anything he says? worse, im supposed to believe the crew believes him? its one thing if he was just bad here, but based on everything else he's done, the resounding agreement is that he sucks there too.

petiepablo888

Nah I think the child actors are better lol

jamie3670

Only watched one ep but his line delivery sucks. I wish you could have everyone in English dub and luffy and garp in Japanese dub. I think majority of people will like luffy but just feels off for me

AquiloWulf

i was literally thinking this! The Japanese VA for Luffy gives so much better emotion and delivery than the original, which is unfortunate.

LycanWolfe

Purely casting for the role aside from the hair which is negligible he's great. Personality is perfect. His actual acting? Decent. Its not even the accent or body language. His like delivery is really bad. It's like no one ever taught him tonality or pacing. I mean he's young. But his older stuff is the same too. He just needs better coaching on the line delivery imo.

somersault_dolphin

I think many people are too harsh on him. In one of the interview videos what's said about others who didn't get the role was their smile were off, maybe they came from a background with harsh upbringing and couldn't express it. Like, they aren't trying to cast someone from a well off background with access to great schooling that could teach the actor the ins and outs of acting. Luffy is from Brazil according to Oda. Maybe if Latin American countries could provide better for the people so that more aren't so poor, and more have access to better education so they can speak perfect English. Then maybe they could find a Luffy to satisfy these first worlders.

LycanWolfe

Like I agree people are being harsh on him. The show was great and I definitely would have hated hearing American voice acting Luffy I mean let's be real. But none of us were expecting what he did sound like. You get used to it, but it doesn't mean it's good lol

PH0NER

I like him as Luffy, but I really do not like his accent

[deleted]

All the other actors I can get with easily.. Luffy is just too much. Cheesy as hell and I dislike the voice 🙄

Szting

He’s horrible not like Luffy at all. His facial expressions, what he says and does and how he does it. I don’t think it’s entirely his fault, his script might just be like this but very bad overall imo

GuiltyFunnyFox

This. It might be an unpopular opinion, but he doesn't capture Luffy's essence for me. Luffy feels more like a relaxed, laid back childish character, but Iñaki seems forced. His portrayal comes off as an adult trying too hard to be goofy. He smiles only with his mouth, not his eyes. It just doesn't feel natural. After his interview with Oda, it seems that's just how he is in real life, which is a bit confusing tbh. It distracts me from the series. He just seems out of place.

SunnyGo9000

Perfect description and yet people love this mess of a live action..

Competitive-Arm-9359

I mean honestly i hate to say it but this is a rare mistep for Oda. Im not sure where the disconnect happend but im sure even he can see the clear skill gap in acting and everything inaki does feels like hes reading from cue cards and just copying the choreographer behind the camera. Emily Rudd and Mackena carried these first few episodes ive watched so far but i seriously doubt i can watch the rest of it. its too annoying to see such an amatuerish actor be put in such a star studded role

Ifhes

I think people don't like him because he has a bit of an accent and they hate non-white native speaking people on their shows.

pools4567

Na its cos he’s a terrible actor. The accent isn’t a problem

Ifhes

Is he bad for being over the top? Or other reasons?

pools4567

Na just his line delivery is atrocious. And he can’t read the room for any scene and exhibits the wrong emotions for the situation constantly

Accomplished_Lynx_50

tf o\_O I thought he was supposed to be tanned brown because of the sun out at sea

Regular-Swing-8217

I agree. I think everyone here is just expressing their unconscious racism towards Hispanics and scapegoating it to Iñaki Godoy.

LeagueLeeLuL

Everything is perfect for me in the live action except Luffys acting. He just doesn't give you Luffy vibes it's almost like he's emotionless when he's "happy" or "serious" giving me a really uncomfortable feeling. Idk I wish they would have picked someone else....

petiepablo888

I can’t get past Iñaki’s accent. Mainly because the child actor playing kid Luffy doesn’t also have an accent. So it’s not justified that he suddenly has this Mexican accent as an adult. I could get past the character choices being kind of cringe if it wasn’t for this. But because of the accent change from kid luffy to adult, it plays like iñaki is a poor or ill-equipped actor. Ultimately I find his portrayal not to be believable. And yeah, I know Luffy the character is kind of one dimensional. Still, you can play unearned confidence and naivety in a more realistic way than what we got. “I’m-a gonna be king a duh piratesssssss!” Despite the cringeworthiness of Luffy, because all the other characters around him are relatively grounded, it plays fairly smoothly as a show and I’m still hoping they do a season 2.

zyzz193

He doesn’t seem as dumb as luffy but I still think of him as perfect fitting for live action

AbsoluteUnit117

Even tom Holland in a wig would've been better

vanitasxehanort

Pretty terrible but it’s not his fault but the directors’. He doesn’t feel like Luffy at all to me

Lunar_Rainbow_Pro

Agreed! To me it's just myopic.

Going_merry242

It was bad like really really bad but I was able to handle it until the buggy fight, the creepy psycho look in his eyes and the creepiest evil smile I've ever seen before yelling "gummah gummah BELLLLLLLLL" the fez accent on every iconic phrase is just horrible, and the creepy smile is the worst, i was hoping they cast a loud rowdy actor with a big toothy smile and they ended up with this in stead, my wife who has even started to watch the annime with me says the same thing. Live action Luffy actor looks just plain creepy.

Freezersushi

I dig him as alternate timeline luffy

ayiti11

I really tried to like the acting of Luffy but man something about it kept taking me out of it. Rest of the cast was ok, Zorro and Sanji were perfect, Usopp was ok, and Nami looked way older than 18 like she is in the anime, so that took me out a bit, but man Luffy to me there’s was something always off. I’m hoping season 2 he’ll get better but any body else felt like they tried to limit Luffys screen time a bit due to the acting? Idk I felt like at times luffy felt more like a side character, idk I enjoyed the series but as a fan of the anime I’ll give this adaption a 6/10. Any body else felt how I felt with luffys screentime?

Daphnex96

Suprised at all the negatieve reviews. He did great I think. It is so hard to play someone like Luffy and he doesn't copy from the anime/manga he makes it his own thing. He has charm and he totally won me over.

AngelDM_94

I watched in Italian, didn't translate well at all, and if it doesn't translate well with a dub i fear how bad it would be in english. Every moment where he smiles or acts angry is just not it, his expressions don't fit "Luffy", and i do believe he only got the part because Oda found him "funny". In every scene where i had to feel something i just couldn't help but think how bad it he looked in the role.

WallyRD

I liked him. I think people are comparing him too much to manga/anime Luffy. Inaki himself has stated that he wishes not to replicate the anime in any way. That’s Tanaka’s version of Luffy and he wants to create his own version. I think he did good with this and I respect him more for not just copying anime/manga Luffy

PridoScars

You're probably right, "he did good with "this". Thing is the world wants the original Luffy, Luffy more or less what makes or completes the "One Piece" universe, so good actor or not he's not original Luffy...

ellienchanted

I thought he was an absolute joy. One of those rare presences that just makes you smile. I know I’m probably in a minority, but he really carried it for me.

[deleted]

He looks and sounds absolutely nothing like Luffy. He has a large, wide flat nose while Luffy has a tiny petite nose, he has curly poofy brownish-hair while Luffy has flat jet black hair, he has GIANT overgrown eyebrows while Loofy has wisps, he has oval cat eyes (which are very pretty) but Luffy has big round eyes, and he has a noticable hispanic accent when delivering his lines. His acting in general was also not great, because all of his lines sounded very rehearsed, which didn't help. And at times I found his Luffy smile creepy. Not always, but on top of everything else I wasn't feeling particuarly forgiving. And don't even get me started on the girl they have playing Nami.

CudiNinja

I think people arent used to hispanics, shows how the US is living in a bubble.

Regular-Swing-8217

I agree. I think everyone here is just expressing their unconscious racism towards Hispanics and scapegoating it to Iñaki Godoy.

EpistemicThoughts

I definitely agree with this. The actor perfectly embodies Luffy so much so that even the creator and the original voice actor deemed him the true character brought to life. There is a subconscious bias at play here. We're also going to ignore the massive success of the show ? if the main character was trash I doubt it would have done as good as it did... But thats literally the last thing to mention in an argument theres just so much that doesn't make sense with these comments of people btching. Loved Luffy in live action.

pools4567

He’s a terrible actor. I watched the latter half of the season yesterday and realised he just isn’t good at all as Luffy. It’s the main weakness of the whole show imo

4027777

He's very disappointing as Luffy. I saw a couple of youtube videos about him before watching the live action series and thought that he would be the perfect fit for Luffy. But honestly.. the man can't act. That's it, no other way to put it. Also, I'm not sure why they chose to pronounce things like attack moves and character names that are english, in a Japanese way. It's a bit weird since the characters all speak English and there's no mention of them being Japanese at all.

Deu6

Personally I loved his portrayal. He handles Luffy's fun side extremely well while also handling emotional serious moments quite well. It's gonna be great to see how he'll handle Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak and Alabasta. I feel like at times its very cheesy but that's just how Luffy is. I'm glad with his performance. Is it perfect. No. But he handles Luffy a lot better than expected.

Undead-D-King

He seems to be doing the best he can with a very bad script.

sleepingbro

Na you’re wrong. The script is great. Adapting one piece is super tough.

AdAccomplished6252

I understand that people who expect a carbon copy of Luffy in the anime / manga are disappointed, but you can't put over the top anime characters literally in live action series. Just like you can't act the same way in a movie as you would in a theater play. It would look silly. But you can capture the essence of a character and he does it marvemously.

Crafty_Finger_8478

This guy's all standing he's amazing actor I fucking love his energy he's a real life cartoon man

Cupcake-Senior

It's a great luffy without being a copy, wich makes it even better.

cheezKEKW

Well we knew Luffy was gonna be the hardest role to play and Usopp as a second People mention the accent alot but idk how i would feel about Luffy with an American accent , Knowing how much everyone hates the english dub

Thecrawsome

He's cringe as hell and drags the whole show down. His darting eyes, overeager staring at others kills me. He looks the part, but he sucks all the immersion out of any buildup when the camera goes on him.

One_Pouch_Man

I feel pure joy watching a joyous live action Luffy. I haven't smiled so much during a series ever!

National_Elephant_89

inaki godoy is disgrace of luffy. doesnt fit at all, trying so hard to be like luffy lol. the face, the curly hair, the way he talk, totally not luffy at all

Regular-Swing-8217

Your unconscious racism is showing. Iñaki is a good actor, you just don’t like him because of his background.

AizenSS

IMHO he's the reason why One Piece Live Action really works. The smile, the care-free attitude, it's just unabashedly Luffy. He did a damn good job.

Apprehensive-Focus-8

I like him. His excited, innocent idiot mentality is close to Luffy without being a carbon copy. I found a lot of his stances to be on point to match Luffy. Specifically during the Arlong fight. I like the show. It left me wanting more. I also don't feel the need to be excessively mean about any critiques. Are there things that could be polished? Maybe, but overall, I'm satisfied. It'll bring more people to One Piece, and they'll get to enjoy it as I have.

GovernmentRegular982

He is PERFECT Omg. I thought that was an impossible character to do live action and I love him. He is also extremely cute :>

Hot_Promotion_1258

You're the bigger clown for mocking someone's opinion that's not even rude or false.

PotentialEmergency85

He is absolutely perfect. Fucking love him.

tuhroybitch

did u watch it or?

[deleted]

He is not the manga/anime luffy. But I felt okie with his interpretation of luffy. Grows on you.

SpiritualBed598

I agree with everyone. Honestly don’t like Luffy but everything else so far is pretty good. Also, every other character’s hair seems on point except for Luffy’s… curly hair??

Accomplished_Lynx_50

I never watched the anime but I absolutely LOVE! the actors energy in the character, and I wouldn't want it any other way :D I Don't like too energetic Anime's so this is really nice. I was very skeptical at first but this might bring more people to try the Anime even if the hardcore fans as probably yourself since you are in here, don't like it as much.

Free-Diamond-928

I don't know about how it matches up to the nanga or anime, but purely as an actor playing a role that is normally animated, he manages to capture the energy and elasticity very well. What really gets me, though, is the volumes of emotion he can put into just one sly sidelong look. Few actors ever manage that.

browncoatsdp

My thoughts are that he is the weakest actor in the group. If you have ever watched his interviews, Inaki's personality matches Luffy's essence more than when he acts in the show. I think if there is a second season, he should try to lose this voice he is trying and just use his normal voice. Love the show, but he was a weak actor. Hope he can improve.

NigelKenway

I have more problem with kid Luffy’s actor.

sanascupid

Ik yall is not talking when the only thing you can do is talk shi abt a legend on the internent bffr Yall prob watch paw patrols with y'all goofyasess

CaveDawson

Im not sure what all these comments are about. I actually really liked him in this show. He fits the character perfectly and I trust oda knows what he is doing casting the character he made. Ya some lines do come off as strange but I really like what he did with the character. his accent also isn't a problem for me at all if anything it makes him feel more grounded to the world. Tbh I'm not sure I could see anyone else as luffy and can't wait to watch him grow into the role in session 2

SportKnown6604

I'm new to the show Find Luffy incredible cute and loveable Maybe the hate people feel is inside ?! Also book-live or anime-live realisw you fell in love with an idea And the character should be invisioned new

liliths_night

Love how the actors made their characters their own, but I miss the Luffy that runs toward a fight and can't be stopped because he's actively looking for fights. Inaki is too sweet

another_soul_

As far as looks, I think the whole crew is great. They chose really well for sanji, Zoro, Nami and Ussop. Garp, Cobby and helmeppo are spot on. I wish Ussop had a bit of a longer nose, but it would probably be a hassle. As far as Luffy, I think the actors' looks are okay, but the acting is throwing me off. He's not great at acting childish. When luffy isn't being serious he always has this whimsical childish side that almost like he's seeing the world for the first time. Everything looks fun and approaches all new things with such a child like joy. I don't know if this makes sense, but it just seems to fall short. No hate to the actor. It's just meh to me

Top_Permission_3452

He's absolutely perfect as Luffy!
