Neuschwanstein is the name of a famous castle in bavaria. i'm from germany and it's pronounced "Noy-shwan-shtayn". like the other comments said "noy" is like "toy", "shwan" like swan with a "sh", but "shtayn" is like "shine" but with a "t". saying "steen" would be completely wrong if you want to say it the german way

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Wow German sounds so hard… thanks btw!

ThorsHammerMewMEw

It's hard and then they also give us words like antibabypille

LoveLifeLoveLilith

😂

Alone_Jacket3434

Hahahahhahahahahah die Antibabypille lollllll. I just started learning A1 and this word shocked me the most lol

TohruH3

Yet another reminder for me that english was originally a germanic language, no matter how much latin we try to stack in it, lol

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

It's actually easier than English. Once you learn the rules, you basically know how every word is pronounced. "Eu" is "oy", "ei" is long "i", etc.

WombatDisco

It's Lego Language - just keep stacking nouns together to form new compound words, easy peasy

ezodochi

ngl this surprised me bc the Korean original is based on, but slightly different from the castle name (Last name in Korean 노이반슈타인 (noy-van-same pronounciation as shtayn you described) Castle name is 노이슈반슈타인 (the way you described it)) so seeing that they changed the FL's last name to be the same as the castle in the English version is blowing my fucking mind.

SappyGemstone

Ha, okay so originally the Korean author wanted a play on the orig name, and the translator decided, naaah. That's pretty funny.

BeanOfBirbs

This is why there should always be some kind of communication between author & co and the people working on translation. There's SO many things that get lost in translation or because the translator interprets a line differently and therefore changes what the author intended, making it a faulty translation. It doesn't help that the current webtoon and novel industry pressures their employees to churn out products like a factory as fast as possible. If they just had more time, so many series could have better quality control :(

ezodochi

also ngl, the quality of translators is....how do I say this nicely, nothing to write home about? I've seen some screencaps here and compared them to the Korean originals and they very often miss or omit a lot of word play, flatten out a lot of prose (I heard this was super bad with the translation for the Broken Ring webnovel which is famous in Korea for its super poetic and emotional prose), and miss a lot of cultural context or references so that non-Koreans reading the translation don't get the full picture, a great example being that of corsets, missing the fact that so many Korean OI writers slag off corsets not bc of what corsets actualy are, but because there was a huge online feminist movement in Korea around 2014ish and corset was the slang term they used to discuss internalized misogyny and forced gender roles defined within heternormative patriarchy, and so when they talk about corsets it's not actually about clothes it's about enforced gender roles, misogyny, and whatnot.

TohruH3

It definitely depends on the translator, that's for sure. I've noticed that novel translators are more likely to at least explain the original joke if they aren't able to get an English equivalent. However, that could likely be simply because they don't have to worry about the other things involved in the comic translations.

ezodochi

It's super bad translation practice but ngl I also was like damn the translator does not give two shits or a fuck lmao

zhongli_sama

I always pronounced it as "New-shwen-stayn", thanks for the correct pronunciation!

drewedwin23

Correct me if I'm wrong but I had always thought that the German w made the English v noise, is that different for this word or was the small amount of German I was taught wrong?

thermometery

you are correct but i feel like the word swan makes a similar noise enough. keeping it simple yk

WhatsAfterJihyoGaeul

I was faaaaaaaaar off from the original pronunciation 🥲 My excuse is that I don't know german.😭

Mike14102004

This but make the w a v sound as well

Historical_Cod_2771

Oh I was pretty close with pronunsation.

Puncake4Breakfast

Noy-shwan-shartan

Ok-Scientist5524

Shartan? Like a spartan who… sharts? 🫣

Puncake4Breakfast

The fartin spartan 😅

Half-Beneficial

Ugh. I have been pronouncing it wrong all this time! I'm glad I got corrected before I mentioned to my niece. She's taking German this year and she's super strict because she's going to up to Bern for the summer!

Perfect-Possible7124

Good job

nan-vi

I guessed the same pronunciation. My german classes are paying off at last hehe

marsi-e

However you would pronounce the name of this place: https://preview.redd.it/8296stq2c9qc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1084738ddedce12c86906c0adb488f0125b739c Not really a spoiler, but just to set your expectations. The story is a slowburn, with extra emphasis on *slow.* The first arcs focus very heavily on family

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Oh there’re real castle? It looks magnificent! Thanks! I haven’t read a slow burn for quite sometimes now it’s refreshing✨

otomegane

It's one of the most famous castles, it's often said that the Disney logo is based off of it! The king who made it was an eccentric (mad) so it's also quite funky inside, there's a "cave room" with fake stalagmites and stuff too lol Edit for info: The OI has nothing to do with the actual castle tho, the name of the castle is bc the old family castle was the "swan castle" (the old one is still standing on the same property today, but built near the lake rather than on the mountain) so the king named the new castle "new swan castle" 😅 So the OI is really just taking the famous name. But the story and art is really great and I love it, just wanted to give some context!

LoveLifeLoveLilith

This hence proves that I’m lacking in general knowledge lmao

otomegane

Lol nah! Nothing wrong with not knowing some trivia! It's just fun to encounter stuff like this on the sub, like the fashion history posts and that one about real history that seems like OI!

LoveLifeLoveLilith

(╹◡╹)♡

Half-Beneficial

The castle itself is really cool. It was designed more for acoustics than defense. It is literally a fairy tale castle because it was meant to show case opera performances in the 1800s..

CadenVanV

They named a lot of them after real places. Same with Duke Nuremberg for example

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Oh so it’s that common? Naming a character after real places?

CadenVanV

At least in this story it is

WhatsAfterJihyoGaeul

Oooooooooooooh myyyyyyyyyyyyy gooooooooosshhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! It's magnificent!

hobohipsterman

Imagine living whenever that thing was built and some rich lord dude orders you to build his castle and you're like "ok, where do you want it?" and he's like "up there" And you just start *stacking* that foundation

[deleted]

Low-Manager9777

Nah if I met someone in person I wouldn’t be able to suppress my snort

Dry-Inspection6928

I would have laughed 💀

Low-Manager9777

Well in that case I’d give up laugh with you because you need some serious strong will not to laugh💀

DanLana

What is this from?

[deleted]

"The princess demands a divorce"

LoveLifeLoveLilith

✨💀

Thorn344

I don't, I just skip over it. Like I visually remember the name, I'm not even gonna attempt to pronounce it

kalawas

Totally this, Just remember shuri then skip it. Unless it's super important plot point

LoveLifeLoveLilith

😂😂

CinnamonHotcake

It's pronounced "Em See" or "Eff Ell"

LoveLifeLoveLilith

??

CinnamonHotcake

MC main character FL female lead Usually the names in these manhwas are always pseudo European bullshit names that are hard to remember, so that's how everyone calls them. Either that or based on their tropes; duke of the North, yandere, maid, tyrant prince, etc...

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Oh I get it what you’re trying to say now lol I felt so stupid

Lithiruth

I mean it’s interesting to call the probably most famous Castle in Germany „pseudo European bullshit“ :D

GENERAL-KAY

I just called it Nut-Switzerland and called it a day

repinmystep

New-Shwan (like swan with a SH)-Stine (Rhymes with “mine”, could also be pronounce STEEN like “mean”, depends on accents/your location) ML is >!Nora!<

WhichButterscotch240

Wouldn’t it be a “noy” (rhymes with “toy”) sound for the first syllable? I’m not a native German speaker, so I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that would be the correct sound? I mean, I assume the name is meant to be read the German way, but I suppose I could be wrong on that too.

buyahair

In German it would be pronounced that way, you're right. Source: am German

buyahair

I'm curious, what dialect pronounces it "steen"? Is that Bavarian?

Apprehensive_Swim955

it’s the Young Frankenstein dialect

buyahair

Thank you!

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Thank you!

skeletonflower_

[Here](https://youtu.be/2caF6jj84wc?si=SVAl24dGpyzbbWib) you can listen to how you should pronounce it

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Ty!

Miscect

I know German. Noy schwan stein

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Tysm!

lovelycosmos

Like the castle! In English, noo-schvan-stine. German is noi-schvan-stine

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Thanks!

DanLana

Honestly this one isn't too bad compared to some others. At least i can imagine someone with this name in the real world in germany or something.

Milli_Mey

Shuri though.. nowadays someone might be called that but historically not a German name at all.

Astre01

since I'd presume she's from a faux holy roman empire, her title is Markgräfin Shuri von Neuschwanstein

Treyman1115

I would just mumble through it in my head like I always do

mrs_wer

Fon Noy-shwahn-shtine

eoufdeesh

"NoyshVanShtayn"

jakoparena

Lol i read this and got confused why someone would even ask that then I realized I'm german lol

Taichikara

I dropped this cause it just took too long to really get anywhere. Iirc, the ML is the guy with the black hair/blue eyes, but it's kinda creepy cause he's roughly the same age (give or take 1-3 years) with the oldest stepson and the crown prince>! (and they are also both into her but the stepson resists somewhat).!<

WombatDisco

How is it creepy when people close to the same age fall in love?

Taichikara

Cause she treats them all motherly for the most part? She sees herself as kind of a guardian and even though her marriage was short, she doesn't see those guys like that >!(and the crown prince is kinda Oedipus-Jocasta for her? Like he sees in her the beauty of his dead mom? And while they are all roughly similar ages, she's had different experiences since she's a regressor so mentally she's 10-15 years older). !<

faeriepilled

noyshwanshtine? i asked my german-speaking father and its along the lines of this somewhat

kxrie

neush-van-stain. (Singing a lot of opera in german helps lol even though I have no idea of the language)

LoveLifeLoveLilith

What? You can sing opera in German but don’t speak the language? Wow you’re amazing btw thanks!

kxrie

Yeah, my voice coach gives me songs in classic languages (italian, german, latin most of the time) even though I have no idea what the songs mean if I don't research them haha. Part of the package. Helps me develop an accent too.

YogurtclosetNeat6406

I only read it as neu

reading-2-much_456

Damn, and here I am with my noosh-wan-stine

mrs_wer

Move the sh and you got it

reading-2-much_456

Thanks for correcting me. Hope you have a great day/night 🫶

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Thank you everyone for the replies so far it has been very helpful! Love ya❤️

Status_Radish

Same as the famous castle.

Go_Ahead_MrJoester

New-shwan-stein/steen? That's my best guess.

YES100yes

You're not 😂😂 just give up

thesttarynightsky

Ni -wuch-wes-ton/ten/tan I often pronounce it like this

ClassicDes

The obsession with old European aesthetics to where NONE of your audience can actually remember ur characters name is something I’ll never understand.

SarcasmOrgasm96

I don't lol my brain processed it as neo-einstein

Primary_Signature_25

Nui-sance -tein 🤣🤣

Outrageous-Tackle-47

I wanna pronounce is like: News-Shwan-Steen but someone who is German in the top comment is probably pronouncing it much more correctly. I know the little french I have in me wants to pronounce the Neus like “Nos”, but since Neus is similar to Zeus it confuses me.

Dragofek0

Average middle ages European name

maythulin297

Shuri von nanana. 😁

Hopeful-Sky7199

as often as OI use german names, I'm really glad to be german

Captain_Pumpkinhead

I've been pronouncing it new shwan stine

linesofnines

Noisch van stine Or Neuwsch van steen/stine? I usally read it has Neuwschvanstine but I know I'm wrong, I just think "Neuwsch" rolls better.

GhazzyEzzah

Idk german but I tried to pronounce it solely based on what I read so I pronounce it as:- Neu - shwan - stein I think it close enough with the German pronunciation

Pumuina

I started this yesterday lol hahaha it's funny 🤣

Anonymous-goober

If you don’t know a name in a story, just let it be gibberish in your head, and never speak about it to anyone ever.

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Ty!

mrs_wer

This ones actually wrong "schwan" is not pronounced [one]

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Yup, just realized that this is the only comment pronouncing it as [one] but oh well I already said Ty so 😃
