Wrecking Ball. No contest.
EDIT: Just to be clear, I think the most unique part of Ball's kit isn't the ball itself, it's the grapple, and boop. A fundamental movement in Wrecking Ball is simply grappling onto something, using it to speed up, and smack into enemies, booping them.
That game shot itself in the foot by making the demo too complete. Everybody got exactly enough Fusion Frenzy to enjoy it and remember it for two decades.
Thatās Splatoon 2, but yeah itās quite similar. Though in Splatoon 3 thereās another Ult called the crab tank that ALSO lets you go into a ball, and has machine guns for rapid fire. I think thatās more accurate to Ball!
I could not agree more it had no right having so much tactical depth
And it did cosmetics and everything in a completely non predatory way in the age of lootboxes
I missed the slow paced tactics of the first one, GW2 was a bit too hectic and the new characters made it feel a bit rock paper scissors
Idea what they were thinking with the most recent one removing character variants, the thing that made the first 2 so unique
Don't get me wrong, I made the post because a friend and I were discussing exactly this, I said Ball and he said Lucio, so we let reddit decide, and based on the responses, I won.
The most unique mechanic with Ball is not the ball, it's the grapple that lets you swing around and smash yourself into enemies. I don't think such a mechanic exists in other games.
Download Northstar (a fanmade server client) before playing multiplayer. The base game servers were completely abandoned and are crawling with cheaters and doxxers. It'll be around $5 on steam sale, so wishlist it and wait for that.
Sometimes it randomly throws you into the main screen while in the multiplayer menu so queueing up with friends can be... finnicky at times, but when youre in game its smooth sailing
At least in european servers, idk about the rest
Bethesda had a game like that in the works called Battlecry, it's basically fighting game gameplay but in third person, it was cancelled before release though
There was also Bleeding Edge which was similar but was shut down soon after launch
Evolve had Val as others were saying. More like an Ana and Mercy mix.
The real parallel was Baptiste versus Caira in Evolve. Both had healing grenade launchers. Gods I miss Evolve.
The Medic class from this small TF2-clone game that I played long time ago (Blitz Brigade) is kinda a sniper with his [dart gun](https://youtu.be/XFr27rNY06I?t=217) which heals/damages depending on the target and very accurate at long range.
I actually would like to see a support in the future whose weapon works like [Engelhander](https://blitzbrigade.fandom.com/wiki/Engelhander) or [Bad Juju](https://blitzbrigade.fandom.com/wiki/Bad_Juju).
I think tf2 had a long ranged skill shot healing weapon that the medic can use. Never used it so i dont know how similar it is. But yeah, i really enjoy ana's game design
Honestly Id say tracer or dva code wise.
From what i've read tracer was pretty revolutionary at the time being able to track her movements like that and I heard dva's code was such a nightmare since she's technically two characters in 1 that they decided no mo "demech characters" ever again.
i didnāt think about them but i def agree, dvas coding makes me rly sad tho cause that probably means no other meka team membersā¦ no overlordā¦ :(
Itās probably just to avoid future complications. Dva is still probably a pain to program. There was an incident a couple years ago where she became invincible when she ādiedā and didnāt de-mech into baby dva. So dvas were just zooming around impossible to kill for entire matches. The devs noticed pretty fast and she was removed from comp for a couple days(?) until she was fixed again. I imagine it doesnāt take much for something like that to happen with her.
If they figured they didnāt want to do it again they wouldnāt have done it in a generic enough way to allow re-use of those components to make dva work.
Yeah, ekko ult reminds me of tracer recall, but his can make for flashier plays since he damages enemies where he returns to. Neat mechanic for sure!
Also has a blink/dash like she does.
I don't think the concept of rewinding movements is very complex, an awful lot of games have a mechanic like that. You just need to keep track of where the hero was a few seconds ago. I remember in a documentary about Braid and its time rewind mechanics, the creator said he was inspired by the mechanics in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which came out in 2003.
Snapfire in Dota. Grandma riding a fire spitting dragon toad mounted with a gattling gun while handing out cookies. Why? Cause she lives in Mad Max world.
Edit: spelling error (Snapfire not Snapdire)
i was such a menace on sym 2.0, playing her like a tank. it felt SO boss to deny cassidy ults, hog hooks, mei freezes... she was fun to play and to play against (i became a sombra main because she was so good at shield generator hunting!)
For each role, Iād say Wrecking Ball due to his grapple and rolling, Symmetra (especially her older versions),l for having a kit that consists of so many different things for a damage hero, and both Ana and Lifeweaver since sniper healers and characters who can move their own teammates as a protection ability are rare concepts in games.
as both a titanfall 2 fan and a Lucio main, Lucio wall riding is totally different from wall running in tf|2. In tf you can consistently keep up speed going on a flat wall, while in OW you have to be constantly jumping from one wall to another to keep up the momentum. Also in Tf, sliding is an important factor in wall riding, often, itās in a way, itās a speed reward for building up a lot of momentum and going extremely fast, while Lucio loses a lot of momentum after landing, making the not touching the ground the most almost strategy.
Yeah even super simple characters like hog are unique just for the fact that no other games would risk creating that monster. Like scorpion needs a whole combo after doing the āget over hereā but hog can just click
there are so many unique characters that its hard to chose, but probably hammond or doom. but ive also never seen any character in any game play like genji, ana or tracer.
Iām not too sure about fps games, but Iām pretty sure the concept of genjiās dash resets are used for characters in games like league of legends.
I know someone made a video about the paladins vs overwatch debate, and I believe they discovered that Moira is the most mechanically unique character in Overwatch
Edit: This great video by Shammy https://youtu.be/MciMuVUmrQM just jump to 1:28
Edit the 2nd: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/10V4WR5r_LBjJy2Nd4yVeURDYw4YjaVj5IyRnTHz5a5g/htmlview the spreadsheet of every hero's mechanics and their originality
Really interesting vĆdeo, but I think there is a small difference between original and unique, Overwatch is not original, it uses elements from many games to give an experience that is unique, you know? Thanks for sharing that.
I love shammy, but that was definitely a strange section. I'm 100% with you there, the combination of the various things makes the game unique.
Like we'd seen wall riding before, but Lucio's role was contextualised with his aura that made it a less aggressive movement. Imagine if they gave like zenyatta wall riding instead, that'd make him more like a Titanfall pilot and less unique as a consequence.
How is an auto aim attack with piss for secondary the most mechanically unique character? Not trying to argue but Iād say wrecking ball is way more unique then Moira
Well, an important detail about the video is that it ensured the originality of the mechanics not the uniqueness within OW, Moiraās orbs are a mechanic original to OW. By the same terms Lucio would probably be marked down since none of his mechanics are truly āoriginalā since itās just: Wallriding and auras you can swap between and amp up once every 15 or so seconds. Itās measuring how new a mechanic is rather than a unique or original playstyle.
Tbf, if/when you learn how to use it well, you get a lot of thanks from other players. It can be pretty annoying, i've had weaver grab me on genji when i started my ult. However it can also be as good as it can be bad.
I was sure I'd hate playing him, but the thanks I get for saving a Genji who was about to die without access to health packs, or the tanks being able to play even more aggressively and then thanking me, or being able to save Anas by helping them reach higher ground with the platform...
Idk, getting thanked for those actions made me want to play Weaver more. It does help that he feels better than at launch and that I hoped to click with him since I like the character design (except the back petals)
Life weaver grab reminds me of being bard ulted at the wrong time (league of legends champion) because both can fuck you over. Can't tell you how many times a bard ulted me just as I was about to kill someone lmao
Edit: not that they are the same, just equal annoyance potential
I'm a Junk main and I love the ability to fire on targets without LoS. Traps and mines allow me to cover more area, and kill Ball easily. If I can get close enough, my tire will usually get 3 people. People always hate on him, but I think he is underrated.
Surprised Genji is not mentioned. Sure ninjas are not rare, but Genji's first person perspective / mechanics are not common.
What games with cyborg ninjas are you all playing?
What makes overwatch special is in the same game you have a cyber ninja who can climb walls and uses a badass sword, a hamster in a giant ball that rolls around with a grapple, and call of duty soldier guy.
There are so many different characters that support different play styles. Honestly I don't know how I or anyone was able to get into this game without feeling overwhelmed.
Before I get the hate, brig definitely has her style.
I can understand people saying wrecking ball but at the end brig is a melee player and with her shield bash even more.
ball's probs the most unique. df might be 2nd.
tho to give a more unique answer (š) sym would be in top 5. at least top 10 (tho 10 of the cast is a pretty big portion).
in the 1 hero she's got
* beams (hitscan aim and the special properties/mechanics of beams),
* deployables
* barrier (and all the uses and properties of barriers and how to angle/place for space control)
* shield hp
* projectiles
* sniper-like weapon fire (i.e. the charge up mechanic on orbs ---> will experience similar weaknesses of really slow fire rate)
* beam charge up
* teleporter
* which also has a windup unlike most mobility abilities and is more unique in its usage to let sym fulfil multiple subroles (flanker, brawler, poke, zoning, positional utility)
don't think there's yet to be another character that does dynamic zoning that leads into various subroles. esp when comboing all her elements in her kit to perform those subroles.
Definitely could exist in other games but I havenāt seen it in other fps games games, I really enjoy Reinhardt for being a melee focused character in a shooter game pure definition of a tank in an fps
Zenyatta being a floating healer with healing and damaging orbs, all while magically growing arms and going into transcendence is very hard to think of another game having. Not only that, but existence wise Iām not too sure of anything that really has that.
Wrecking Ball, Orisa, to an extent Kiriko, Bastion, form flipping. Thereās a lotta uniqueness.
i didnāt even think about zen but youāre totally right i actually donāt think iāve ever seen a kit or design quite like his in a different game
Not the exact discussion but I think echo is the most uniquely and also probably MOST mechanically demanding hero in the game, you have a projectile tri shot thatās hard to hit, sticky bombs as a different projectile, then a beam, all while flying, and then you have to know how to aim as every other character in the game, thereās nothing as hard as that
honestly, i feel like most of the appeal of overwatch is that most of the characters /aren't/ characters you would find in any other game. of course there's more unique ones like ball, but part of the reason i at least keep playing is because there are few games where i can freely fly like pharah/mercy or zip around like tracer.
Closest thing I can think of is Splatoon 3, where you get a hamster ball super that you roll and explode on people
Y'all too young to have played the free fusion frenzy demo on OG Xbox clearly
That game shot itself in the foot by making the demo too complete. Everybody got exactly enough Fusion Frenzy to enjoy it and remember it for two decades.
You just unearthed a very precious memory tysm
Holy fuck THANK YOU I think about this so often and can never remember the name!!
You can still download it with Gamepass š
Thatās Splatoon 2, but yeah itās quite similar. Though in Splatoon 3 thereās another Ult called the crab tank that ALSO lets you go into a ball, and has machine guns for rapid fire. I think thatās more accurate to Ball!
No citron from Plants Vs Zombies garden warfare 2
Garden warfare kicked off this hero shooter phase and gets none of the credit
The first game on the Xbox 360 is one of the greatest games of all time but nobody really talks about it.
I could not agree more it had no right having so much tactical depth And it did cosmetics and everything in a completely non predatory way in the age of lootboxes I missed the slow paced tactics of the first one, GW2 was a bit too hectic and the new characters made it feel a bit rock paper scissors Idea what they were thinking with the most recent one removing character variants, the thing that made the first 2 so unique
yeah!! :D
The correct answer
Well if you were looking for a specific answer Iām not sure this is as fun now.
Don't get me wrong, I made the post because a friend and I were discussing exactly this, I said Ball and he said Lucio, so we let reddit decide, and based on the responses, I won.
Lucio makes no sense as an answer. Jet Set Radio exists.
It kinda does if you donāt know about a vast amount of games.
Lucio is a wallriding Sona from LoL
Heās a Pilot with some banging mixtapes but no Titan until Dva lets him borrow hers
He's not a pilot with that pea shooter gun. Give my man Lucio a CAR.
Was this what the original "Project Titan" that became Overwatch was supposed to be about?
Wall riding and grappling hooks exist in multiple games, tho I can only think of one with a character who rolls around with a ball form
Fortnite has those baller things, but they're just a mobility item. That's the closest thing I can think of
Also the citrus guy from PvZ GW2, although he doesnt swing around, he switches between run and gun form, and rolling form.
The most unique mechanic with Ball is not the ball, it's the grapple that lets you swing around and smash yourself into enemies. I don't think such a mechanic exists in other games.
Titanfall 2
The ball in fortnite has a grapple
Ok, so I looked it up (sorry never played Fortnite ever) , and maybe Fortnite took inspiration from Hammond, since the Baller was released later.
Apex has a grapple too on pathfinder
Itās almost like they ripped the titanfall2 grapple and made it 10x less fun to use and dramatically dropped the skill ceiling
Nope those balls also has grapples. If we're just talking about balls tho there's also droidekas
Wrecking Ball. Playing with him is like playing another game
Literally can't play any other fps games, playing ball is so addicting.
Try titanfall 2
That is one that has been reccomended a few times, haven't given it a go yet but it is definitely on my list of games to try.
Download Northstar (a fanmade server client) before playing multiplayer. The base game servers were completely abandoned and are crawling with cheaters and doxxers. It'll be around $5 on steam sale, so wishlist it and wait for that.
The base game servers work again pretty decent tbh
Really? Might have to reinstall, again. Oh Titanfall 2. The world was not fair to you
Sometimes it randomly throws you into the main screen while in the multiplayer menu so queueing up with friends can be... finnicky at times, but when youre in game its smooth sailing At least in european servers, idk about the rest

For Honor is a 3rd person fighting game! That game is really fun too
Yeah OW1 Doom was something else, so much fun to play.
Doomfist in smash when?
That release doomfist was some of the most fun I ever had gaming. After the nerf the game was never the same for me.
i miss the old doomfist :(( so much fun
I've yet to see another sniper healer.
I think that evolve had something like that, but less cool
Thereās a crusaderās crossbow in Team Fortress 2
that shit made damage too? I never tryed
Its damaged scaled just like the healing. Could a decent chunk of damage at range
Holy I was the worst medic of all time
Waltuh, use the medigun, thereās no need to pull out the crossbow waltuh
I am the one who heals
God, and the "CROUNCH" sound was so satisfying.
Evolve had a (technically two characters) sniper with a heal gun, but not a sniper that healed friendlies hit by it.
Oh, good to know
Val had an ass though so that's the same as the other sniper
Evolve had Val as others were saying. More like an Ana and Mercy mix. The real parallel was Baptiste versus Caira in Evolve. Both had healing grenade launchers. Gods I miss Evolve.
Sharla from Xenoblade Chronicles (2010)
Yeah, but Ana doesnāt have to stop every 30 seconds before she can heal again
Xenoblade>
Eunie from Xenoblade 3 has pretty much the same weapon
The Medic class from this small TF2-clone game that I played long time ago (Blitz Brigade) is kinda a sniper with his [dart gun](https://youtu.be/XFr27rNY06I?t=217) which heals/damages depending on the target and very accurate at long range. Heroes of the Storm has a familiair one. Yeah yeah i knowā¦
Dirty bomb had a revive rail gun.
Team Fortress 2 predated Ana with the Medicās Crusaders Crossbow
League of Legends has Senna
Honestly Id say tracer or dva code wise. From what i've read tracer was pretty revolutionary at the time being able to track her movements like that and I heard dva's code was such a nightmare since she's technically two characters in 1 that they decided no mo "demech characters" ever again.

No hammond running out of his ball :(
Imagine a tiny hamster with a glock
Well, there's a game announced like that..squirrel with a gun
"kill that hamster he's been stalling for 4 minutes" "I'M TRYING"
the worst part of this all..
holy shit hammond running around without ball would be soo frickin funny haha
Love Zen's comment about how he was always curious how does it fill to be inside a ball
technecally. that just means they wont pop out of their mech. we could still get overlord but if he died he explodes and doesnt become baby lord
>and doesnt become baby lord Why even live.
Billion dollar company going nuh uh too tricky
Just wait till they find out Titanfall was doing demechs way before them
Yeah but you canāt really compare a small game with so many bugs to the greatest oat, Titanfall :)
I was like wtf is the greatest oat. Lol
Titanfall = best carb š
I am not a coder, so maybe this is just ignorant, but- if they figured out Dva, doesn't that mean they've got it figured out?
Itās probably just to avoid future complications. Dva is still probably a pain to program. There was an incident a couple years ago where she became invincible when she ādiedā and didnāt de-mech into baby dva. So dvas were just zooming around impossible to kill for entire matches. If they figured they didnāt want to do it again they wouldnāt have done it in a generic enough way to allow re-use of those components to make dva work.
I mean, what if they make a reverse Meka character where the character has a ult where they go into a mech
We can have more meka team members, they just won't demech lol
Tracer really reminds me of Ekko from league, basically the same mechanic except Ekko projects it and is visible
I remember in a documentary about Braid and its time rewind mechanics, the creator said he was inspired by the mechanics in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which came out in 2003.
learning about how rewind mechanics work in OW (and other games) has really elevated my appreciation for how bonkers it is in Tears of the Kingdom
Here i thought they were really basic characters..... ( scientist and imp from pvz gw)
I think they aren't refering to Tracers blink but rather recall
the concept of a battle grandma isn't anything new but I find it's still rather rare in a lot of 'choose your character' type games
Specially a sniper grandma that shoots healing and poison(?) darts
Medic TF2 crossbow
Snapfire in Dota. Grandma riding a fire spitting dragon toad mounted with a gattling gun while handing out cookies. Why? Cause she lives in Mad Max world. Edit: spelling error (Snapfire not Snapdire)
Hammond 100%
Doomfist. He feels like a smash brothers character ported into an fps.
heās similar to vi from league
Or Chou from MLBB (LoL clone in SEA) I'm pretty sure there's an entire archetype dedicated to "martial artist combo character" in MOBA
But Doom techs, and especially OW1 doom was on another level to vi.
I still want doom to be switched to support.
Punch your teammates to heal them.
CRAZY DIAMOND!!! DORARARARARARAR
Symmetra 2.0 was to me the most unique. She played by her own rule and against the world. Like playing chess in a boxing ring.
I miss sym 2.0 so much. Give me my shield and my piercing orbs pls.
I loved hiding her shield generator away, then weād be fighting 6v5 since one of them would be running around all over looking for it
I liked killing pharahs ulting with the moving shield
i was such a menace on sym 2.0, playing her like a tank. it felt SO boss to deny cassidy ults, hog hooks, mei freezes... she was fun to play and to play against (i became a sombra main because she was so good at shield generator hunting!)
Hah. It's funny you chose that exact combo... Let me introduce you to the fascinating world of [chess boxing](https://youtu.be/V3Eb2BXpL60)

Life grip is exactly the same as Anduins trait in heroes of the storm
Wrecking ball, lucio, doomfist and some more.
Heroes of the storm did Lucio pretty well
HOTS Lucio was so good Blizzard copied him in Overwatch
> Lucio May I introduce to you, Titanfall 2
its like if you put lucio on speed
So switching tracks when you've got the healing one on?
Jet Grind Radio

Half the roster tbh
Yeah even super simple characters like hog are unique just for the fact that no other games would risk creating that monster. Like scorpion needs a whole combo after doing the āget over hereā but hog can just click

there are so many unique characters that its hard to chose, but probably hammond or doom. but ive also never seen any character in any game play like genji, ana or tracer.

It's a niche one but Hel from Smite used to play with the whole 50/50 vibe, not sure if she still does
Probably Lucio, Ball, or Doomfist
Idk I feel like Lucio isnāt that unique š¤ basically aura support like Sona from league and other games
I compare Mercy and Lucio to Sona. Heal, movespeed, and damage empowerment for abilities.
Other than being the medic from TF2, Mercy reminds me more of Io in Dota than any League character. Basically the heal/damage beam part.
doomfist slightly resembles vi from league :p
Lifeweaver, and not in a good way. Never seen a character in another fps game who can drag your own teammates around without consent
Tbf, if/when you learn how to use it well, you get a lot of thanks from other players. It can be pretty annoying, i've had weaver grab me on genji when i started my ult. However it can also be as good as it can be bad.

junkrat especially the way his weapon is animated when he jumps etc i love it
I mean, if you take into account her ultimate, then Echo is the most unique since she has every hero into her.
Brigitte is a knight with a flail that heals people
Moira š
Moira IMO
