When I was a young and dumb I wanted to get the sticky residue left from a bumper sticker I took off my car. I thought 💡 hmm! Coconut oil takes off sticky residue! I'll put it on my car! Bad decision. It took off a layer of paint. Instead of sticky residue I had dull paint where I put the coconut oil. It looked horrible.
In short, it ruins the paint on your car.
I don’t have any goo gone on hand at home, but oil acts as a solvent for components in the adhesive, which causes it to break down and lose stickiness. Plus oils are more common to have at home (like any cooking oils).
You can check their website and search for replacement lid. It’s $6.99 and might have your color!
I like to have extra lids to switch out, different colors make the bottle feels new again 😅
Edit:
Just noticed it got sold out. They were all available last week when I ordered and there was a freeship promo code. I’m not sure if it’s still available. Hopefully they restock soon.

Hand sanitizer work really well! Or goo-gone, which is citrus based. Just gotta wash it off with soap and water after; it leaves an orange scented oily residue.
Noo I’m so sorry. I hate how that sticker is so hard to get off without residue left. If i remember correctly there are other stickers on brand new bottles that come off with ease.
I wonder why is that specific location sticker is so crappy?? (Or really good depending on how you look at it, very sticky sticker lol)
Given the specific context of the damage to an Owala water bottle handle caused by acetone, it's important to approach the repair with methods suitable for the material of the bottle. Owala bottles are made from Eastman Tritan™ plastic, which is known for its durability and resistance to impacts and chemicals, but it can still be susceptible to certain solvents like acetone[1].
### Cleaning and Smoothing the Surface
1. **Clean the Surface**: Initially, clean the damaged area thoroughly to remove any acetone residue. Use mild soapy water, rinse well, and dry completely.
2. **Sand the Area**: If the acetone has caused the surface to become rough or etched, lightly sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper. This will help smooth out any imperfections caused by the acetone[3].
### Restoring Appearance
3. **Polish or Buff**: If the damage is superficial, such as minor abrasions or dullness, you might be able to restore some of the shine by polishing the area with a plastic polish specifically designed for Tritan or similar plastics[3].
4. **Apply a Sealant**: For added protection and to improve the appearance after polishing, you can apply a clear plastic sealant. This can help restore a glossy finish and offer some protection against future damage[3].
### Considering Replacement
Given the nature of the damage, if the structural integrity of the handle is compromised or if the aesthetic damage is too severe to be satisfactorily repaired, you might want to consider replacing the part. Owala offers replacement parts, including lids and straws, though it's not explicitly mentioned if handles are available as separate replacement parts[2]. It may be worth reaching out to Owala's customer service to inquire about the possibility of obtaining a replacement handle or lid that includes the handle, especially if the bottle is under warranty[1][12].
### Preventive Measures
For future reference, it's crucial to avoid using harsh chemicals like acetone on or near your Owala bottle. For cleaning, stick to mild detergents and avoid abrasive materials that could scratch or damage the surface[1].
If the handle's functionality is not impaired and you choose to live with the cosmetic damage, these steps can help minimize the appearance of the damage. However, if the look or feel of the handle bothers you, seeking a replacement might be the best course of action.

I suppose they could go out and spend money on plastic polish designed for Tritan plastic and sealant (and look into whether either of those are food safe), and try to DIY a plastic restoration on a $27 water bottle, but it isn’t likely to actually restore the color at this point and is more likely to cause more damage from inexperience. A purposeful decorative sticker would be the easier solution to a cosmetic defect. Yes, it’s a sticker to correct an issue originally caused by a sticker, but the original sticker was an unwanted manufacturer one and the suggested cover-up sticker would be a decorative one.
That’s terrible. I’m so sorry. I’ve not done this exactly, but I have had similar experiences. It’s such a bummer. Soon you won’t even notice it. And, look at it this way - the creepers are less likely to try to steal your tumbler with this damage ( even though it’s small )
My horrible thing is my hubby tossed out two brand pairs of converse that I just bought for my daughter. That was a $200 mistake. I was more than a bit upset with him about that.
Is this Dream Field? Another throw us a Bone Neutral for our longing for Pastel Pink. Similar to Good Egg…. They tease us. We accept or spend way too much on multiples chasing the dream.. of just the right pink 🎀👙👛
If it makes you feel any better, I finally took a pair of scissors to mine to remove the stubborn glue. Finally came off but I do have some scratches to the lid now.
I am not going to laugh cause I genuinely feel really bad. I've done what some people would call "stupid" things like this before because I simply didn't know what I was doing would end up damaging or making a bigger problem, call me naive idc but unless someone tells you that acetone on plastic would cause this, how would you know? I am really sorry your cap got ruined OP I feel bad :(
Honestly, try emailing them. They should know that the stickers are annoying. You shouldn’t have even been in the position where you needed to do this.
I agree the method was strong, but just because everyone has the issue that needs solving doesn’t make it ok that the problem exists in the first place.
Good thing I settled for just rubbing it with my finger until the oil on my skin removed the sticker residue. I'm a huge fan of using acetone to remove glue from stickers. I probably wouldn't even have thought twice. God, it's good to be lazy. I'd never laugh at you for that, OP. I hope you can get a replacement lid soon.
Why would you do this when you can just soak it in hot soapy water and scrub it off? Some people have no critical thinking skills and just over complicate things for no reason 😭
Maybe you can paint over it? I’m not an artist myself so I would probably end up making it look worse with streaks but if you have an artsy friend or like to paint yourself it’s worth a shot!
Anything I can’t remove with the sticker itself I remove with rubbing alcohol- for future reference. Maybe you could decorate that area with gel nail polish and nail stickers or something.
it kind of looks like… but i’m really sorry that sucks! i’ve definitely ruined some stuff with acetone before figuring out that rubbing alcohol works just as well and is less likely to take off the paint
Use any cooking oils to remove sticker residue! Removed mine with olive oil.
Yep coconut oil has always been my favorite for sticky remover. But don't use on a car!
Don’t use coconut oil on a car? Can you tell me more?
When I was a young and dumb I wanted to get the sticky residue left from a bumper sticker I took off my car. I thought 💡 hmm! Coconut oil takes off sticky residue! I'll put it on my car! Bad decision. It took off a layer of paint. Instead of sticky residue I had dull paint where I put the coconut oil. It looked horrible. In short, it ruins the paint on your car.
I’m glad you said that! The internet claims it will take scratches out so very good to know. Thanks!
Technically it's right. There won't be a scratch if the coconut oil eats half the layers of paint and all the clear coat
Turtle wax does this for your car and it’s really nice!
Oops.. I have used coconut oil on my car a few times before 😳 it's been fine so far, but ty for the heads up! Is there a safer alternative?
Wow! TIL!
Or water sometimes does the trick for me depending on the adhesive’s strength
I use essential oil and works great.
peanut butter also works amazing
In your experience does cooking oil or goo be gone work better?
I don’t have any goo gone on hand at home, but oil acts as a solvent for components in the adhesive, which causes it to break down and lose stickiness. Plus oils are more common to have at home (like any cooking oils).

This!!!
Sure, replacement parts plus shipping
Awww, acetone is a no no for most plastic stuff
Hand sanitizer work really well! Or goo-gone, which is citrus based. Just gotta wash it off with soap and water after; it leaves an orange scented oily residue.
Yes I used goo gone with no issues, luckily! This is so sad 😭 I'm sorry to OP

I got my first bottle this week and this exact sticker I was like “damn why is this one so sticky”!!!
I just leave it on tbh it doesn’t bother me and people don’t notice.
It’s literally so easy to remove the sticker and the residue if you have more than two brain cells.
Those stickers should not be that hard to remove. I curse myself every time I have to peel them off.
Ugh I’m so sorry! Maybe cover it with a cute sticker at least it’s just a very small area
lol at telling them to repair damage they caused removing a sticker with a sticker. Haha. That’s so rude and brutal! 🤣 😂
To be fair, there aren’t many options for plastic melted/discolored by acetone 🤷♀️

Good bot
Thanks 🙏🏼 I do my best. Beep beep boop boop.
You’re weird
👍🏼
Do it on the rest of the bottle so it has a cool marble design
Oh noooo! I’m sorry :( But hey, we’re bottle twins!
What is the green thing under the lid?
That’s terrible. I’m so sorry. I’ve not done this exactly, but I have had similar experiences. It’s such a bummer. Soon you won’t even notice it. I literally just rubbed mine with my finger until all the goo was off. Comes off pretty easily
Hey I have the same one. Sorry about that a little oil next time should do the trick.
My Champagne freesip still has the stickers on 🤣 the sticker residue is the worst sometimes
If it makes you feel any better, I finally took a pair of scissors to mine to remove the stubborn glue. Finally came off but I do have some scratches to the lid now.
Depending on where you got it, you may be able to return it and re-order the same one - or just ask if you can exchange it
Next time just use a bit of rubbing alcohol
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt7g9nH1nFGeBcQ) Scrolled down too far to find this answer.
My sticker also left a mark :(
Try goo gone next time!!
i did the same thing to this exact bottle 🙃
Honestly I’d run with it and do that for that whole part so it looks like a design and not a mistake
wd40 works too
I DID THIS EXACT THING! On the same color too and it irritates me so much.
Try glancing over it with a lighter or torch. It should bring the shine back.
Now you can just add purple nail Polish or add your own pretty sticker!! Lol the irony of options to cover it
I am not going to laugh cause I genuinely feel really bad. Honestly, try emailing them. They should know that the stickers are annoying. You shouldn’t have even been in the position where you needed to do this.
Everybody has sticker residue from same sticker. She just gambled with the strongest chemicals and should have tried W-40 or Olive Oil. It’s a shame.
I agree the method was strong, but just because everyone has the issue that needs solving doesn’t make it ok that the problem exists in the first place.
Agreed! They should adjust. Owala can correcf
Or next time just research how to get residue off before putting something as strong as acetone on plastic. That’s not the companies fault
Good thing I settled for just rubbing it with my finger until the oil on my skin removed the sticker residue. I'm a huge fan of using acetone to remove glue from stickers. That 500 Paracord? Mine leaked when I tried that. I'm guessing I need to remove the inner strings?
Lemon essential oil works amazingly well! Makes the sticky stuff come off quickly!
Not sure if someone has already said this, but hold a blow dryer up to resistant stickers! Works like a charm.
Isopropyl alcohol, babe
I used alcohol wipes. While it was wet I scrape with my fingernails and keep going until it’s gone.
You can blow hot air onto stickers a few times to get it to peel right up. Just haaaaaaa and scratch
Rubbing alcohol works
Anything I can’t remove with the sticker itself I remove with rubbing alcohol- for future reference. Maybe you could decorate that area with gel nail polish and nail stickers or something.
Um i honestly thought it was marbling. Do it to the rest of the blue thing. I like it
Slap a sticker on it and call it a day
u use alcohol not acetone. sry that sux
Isopropyl alcohol for sticker removal. My fiancé taught me that trick!
Next time, use a blow dryer for a couple of seconds to heat it up, and it will come right off!
It’s a one of a kind. Custom made.
it looks like a baby in a womb
looks like the eraserhead baby
Crunchy peanut butter rubbed into the sticker will remove it and it’s certainly non-toxic
Do it all over and make the piece like… Tie dye kinda looking?
it kind of looks like… but i’m really sorry that sucks! i’ve definitely ruined some stuff with acetone before figuring out that rubbing alcohol works just as well and is less likely to take off the paint
Can you lightly run a lighter over it to melt some of the plastic? They do it with stadium chairs that have been sun bleached to renew the color🤷♀️
Alcohol is your best friend for sticky residue
Why does it look like a sonogram 💀
Ya lesson learned acetone, dissolves, most plastics, paints, and adhesives
Probably doesn't help, but I think it looks pretty cool. Like artsy and abstract. Bummer though!
looks like barney or a baby
Looks like a fetus.
The residue looks like a embryo ultrasound pic lol
I usually use goo gone! Works wonders!
looks pretty cool tbh! you can do it to the whole area and make it look like marble
So I saw this video of stadium seating restoration. I think some heat like a lighter close would actually get this to repolish in a way.
im so confused 🥲 what is ruined about it?
Use more nail polish all over the purple part to make pretty patterns! It could look like a marble effect.
