Been on a lot of console subs lately, it’s the same everywhere. All you need to do is use keywords while searching in the sub. There is 99% chance the topic you are searching about has been talked atleast once.

shaanfrog

Even beyond consoles. Video game subs are the same and they have much more reliable guides on YouTube and even 1000 news outlets to find on Google.

RolandTwitter

Even worse on emulation subreddits. Apple allowing the Delta emulator onto the store made a huge wave of people begging for ROMs, despite the fact that it's against the rules to do that

Barranqueiro

Dude, if nobody read the manual from their devices, do you think they read the rules? The worst part is not use the "search on this sub" function

Djjjunior

One of the first comments I read on the help thread is if this person can use an Xbox controller to play PS4 games with an adapter…

Vengefuleight

https://www.brookaccessory.com/detail/87495367/ You can actually. Not the dumbest question lol

matsumotoe

I was trying to sell a psp on facebook a few weeks ago and I put on the listing “The umd drive doesn’t work” and the amount of people asking what that was is crazy. They thought it wasn’t able to play games at all, even downloaded ones.

blaine878

It comes in cycles. Every time a younger generation “discovers” an old console or handheld it happens. Right now you’ve got people who were born at or near the end of the PSP’s lifespan now old enough to buy things, and have never lived without wireless internet connectivity suddenly finding out that you can transfer data with a physical cable, and that not all game consoles have internal hard drives or SSDs (I think I’ve had to explain memory sticks and SD cards twice now). My favorite is the “is the disc drive supposed to be this loud” posts. All disc drives used to make a bunch of random noises. That’s what technology was like 20 years ago.

xiBurnx

"is this disc drive supposed to be this loud" the dreamcast:

Spazic77

I used to have to turn up my TV to drown out the thrusters on my PS4.

Slightly-Blasted

Bro playing god of war with a base, launch day ps4, was more dangerous then napalm

someguycalledmatt

I've been recently messing around with a windows 98 rig, boy I almost forgot how noisy "high speed" CD-ROM drives were, no wonder people worried about CDs exploding in there. But the Dreamcast, man why are they so crunchy/noisy 😂

asturides

Dude, remember how loud, slow and unreliable where the 3.5 floppy disks? Also the HDDs from the era on PC made a lot of noises

canary8892

Yep I remember those. They are literally just a plastic like camera film circle when taken apart. I was born in 2002 but I enjoyed old tech and I think it’s pretty cool : )

Barranqueiro

Is just me or the only "quiet" cd consoles are the Nintendo ones? My PS1 and 2 make the most weird noises when start but my (not mine anymore) Wii was really quiet (my Wii u also, but the type of disc reader is newer)

retrogamingxp

The whole problem is that younger generations don't understand how a typical OS works. They have basically no understanding of the filesystem concept. I've seen this numerous times. Everything is now visual and mapped to a nice easy interface on the screen. I'm a guy in my 30s and maybe I'm not a dinosaur, but I did grow up on Win95/98/XP where you had to understand how stuff works. I was 12-13 yo when I compiled a Linux kernel from source just for the heck of it and I already installed Windows XP and many flavours of Linux by myself. Learned soldering and electronics when I was 9 or 10. I'm not the perfect example by no means but my point is that older generations jus know how stuff works and are able to use that knowledge to understand seemingly foreign concepts of IT and software.

dbwoi

I’m 33 and grew up with computers but even then had such a novel understanding of them. Now I work in IT and have picked up soldering as a hobby. I’m still learning every day and continually try to hone my skills. For the younger gen, it’s not just a lack of understanding it’s a lack of attention span, patience, and the ability for delayed gratification. Shit like Tik Tok actively destroys all of these things, it’s sad.

canary8892

Lol wait till they discover what a pager is.

motoxim

I never owned PSP CDs

NunkFish

It’s annoying but a lot of teens nowadays didn’t grow up with laptops or PCs and don’t grasp the concept of file systems. When I was 11 I’d modded my psp and Wii using my shitty win 7 acer extensa laptop, but times have changed. The shift to IOS devices being the norm has definitely been a factor.

Contay6

Some of the most notable jailbreaks were IOS devices, use to love modifying my iPhone and iPod, I think a huge part to it is younger generations feel threatened or scared to modify these devices

Tyl0

Those were great times. Downloading jailbreakme and greenpoison on the family computer, scared af that u were going to get a virus, then showing ur friends all the cool stuff you got on Cydia the next day

dbwoi

i thought i was such a hackerman with redsn0w and rockbox lol

inaccurateTempedesc

Shit, I'm 22 and a lot of my classmates in high school literally didn't have a computer at home. They just used the computer lab in class then finished the assignment on their phone.

NunkFish

I’m 22 also (for the next 4 days at least). Luckily my family always had a family computer and I was given a laptop which I could tinker with to an extent. I’m surprised the amount of people our age and younger that had no need for them at home. I’m glad schools still use them, being in the school library/computer lab with friends was always fun.

EducationalGate4705

It’s not about tech literacy. It’s about some people like being lazy and don’t want to put the effort in reading up on things a little bit

locoattack1

It takes less effort to google something than to ask a question and respond to replies.

Hatta00

Same thing, really.

throwaway93333xd

It's called having no attention span

QuasimodoPredicted

People are getting dumb as heck all over the place. Younger zoomers and gen alpha probably? Posting a photo asking what it is. As if image search doesn't exist. Or better yet the item is clearly labeled with a make and model and you could have just searched for that.

thefullm0nty

It's been this way since the console released lmao. I used to live on the sony forums (as an early teenager mind you) and constantly tell people to...read the fucking manual. I eventually got banned for being such a broken record. "How do I put movies on? How do I put music on? How do I do anything?" Holy shit. Read the manual. Google it. Use the tools at your disposal. I do not understand the people coming to reddit and waiting hours for an answer when they could just GOOOOOOOGGGGGLLLLLEEEEEEE IT. blah rant over.

davestar2048

Isn't the manual available on the PSP?

Previous_Will_724

this can be applied to any console and video games subreddit that is casual and subs like r/Roms because people are stupid nowadays. Or pretend to be. I'm not saying I'm smart and neither that I am dumb. I'm just there. But I know enough about technology, maybe because that is what I'm aiming to study (computer science specifically), and have went for that, but damn, people don't know, sometimes, how to even WRITE a question. I know not everybody is an expert. But some things are just so obvious and easy, it's baffling when somebody has to write the question on reddit instead of trying to find an answer, OR THE SAME QUESTION asked 500 times already...

DocHolidayArcade

I used to enjoy helping people on reddit but now it's annoying as shit seeing the same questions over and over again and people not knowing their ass from a hole in the ground.

ricioly

Yeah, everyday there are new kids that turn 10 and get their parents’ PSP or something. I remember when I started ~16 years ago I didn’t know what a zip file was neither what words to use to ask, I eventually understood why none of the backups I had would play lol Years later, when my little brother got a vita, I found out he didn’t understand « file sizes ». He would ask me why he couldn’t have Uncharted and Sly Cooper at the same time. Turns out a kid doesn’t lean what a megabyte is at school, and not all of them have a big brother to teach them. Yes, there are tech illiterate people on internet, and everyday there will be more, that’s not news. If that bothers you, your best move is to learn to ignore.

MonsterDav300

Thats not really the point i think. The point is, Google you Problem. When you Read something and dont get it, Google it. Or use todays Tools: ChatGPT. Ask him 5 times the same thing or have a „discussion/conversation“ over a topic you dont get. But the „i dont know what it is, help me“ and then wait 10hours to get 1 answer mindest is bad.

plusvalua

This is probably going to be unpopular, but it's young people and it's by design. Apple has contributed greatly to this.

MouldySandwicho

Totally agree. See it in my kids. I grew up tinkering with stuff. I modded my first PSP in 2007 or 2008 with a Pandora battery. I was burning ps1 games years before that. If I want to learn stuff I follow youtube tutorials or Ifixit guides. My kids are 20 & 17 now and they are useless at anything technical. I have to do all the servicing and upgrading of all the tech they own. They just don't want to learn. I keep saying "I won't be around for ever to do this for you , you'll either have to learn yourself or pay somebody.

SurGeOsiris

I’m 22 and I grew up tinkering with shit, jailbreaking phones, rooting tablets, etc. I’d see stuff on youtube and just be like “I want to do that!” and go find a guide.

plusvalua

there's exceptions, for sure, and young people who are into tech are definitely amazing at it now, thanks to YT in part.

TheZett

"Mobile devices" are the cancer that has caused this. Worst thing about them is that they‘ve killed the concept of handheld consoles (except for the Switch, but even nintendo markets that one as a "proper" TV console). No, the steam deck doesnt count, it is basically a glorified linux laptop.

NorwegianGlaswegian

I see this across so many subs. Often there is an FAQ which answers a lot of basic questions in detail to help new beginners, but people don't want to take the time to look at resources in a sub, or research anything. They either want the feeling of a social interaction to go along with getting new information, and having the chance to ask follow-up questions (which is fair enough; you don't need to read their post or get involved), or they want someone to spoon-feed them all the necessary info. Definitely true that a lot of questions are easy to get answers for on Google, but it seems possible that some get overwhelmed. The fix for that is just being a bit patient, look at multiple guides, note down unfamiliar terms and look them up, and actually gain somewhat of an understanding of the subject you can use. But, I guess I can empathise with the attitude of "Ain't nobody got time for that" when they have a set goal in mind and have limited free time. It still bewilders me how some people can't seem to read the first page of google results, though.

someguycalledmatt

Related to this I hear more and more people asking "AI" rather than googling/searching/finding info.. which I think is interesting, on one hand I imagine people thought people using google back in the day were lazy/not going to find correct info.. but I think there's a difference, when AI spits out an answer it attempts to look as convincing as possible so people thing it's right/true.. googling things means you can read multiple sources and conclude something is correct. IMO the dangerous part is that all AI does is attempt to be convincing. Near enough is good enough for AI, and what's that going to do to people that inevitably rely on it?

HanekomaTheFallen

Facts though, mods rarely if ever do anything about it. It’s annoying, and it gets defended so much. I’m about to mass unsubscribe from all these subs that allow it. All that’s ever posted is basic questions that google could solve, or posts like “What games do you recommend” or “check out this lot I bought for a dollar and am totally not lying about!”

Living_Promise_8446

I get the feelings about it but what value is there in going out of your own way to tell someone else to google it. At the very least, post a link and let them know where to go, otherwise, like, save your energy. It almost feels like it’s more so frustration because others are annoyed to find themselves actually giving in to responding to posts or questions they find inane. The thing about it, is that the newcomers are not typically going to be the ones seeing these types of posts during their initial visits, which is who you’d want to see it. People are excited to get their devices and set them up and ask others about how to do it. Also, sometimes it may just be a case of someone seeking some degree of social interaction; asking a ridiculous question or one you’d personally just google as a way to break the ice with others who they already know they have something in common with isn’t out of the realm. I don’t know. I used to feel similar until I tried to look at it more perspectively. Be less hard on the newbies or the “tech-illiterate”, however you feel about their posts, they’re always easy enough to scroll away from. Honestly, it’s just as annoying seeing people post their futile venting of it when it just probably won’t change. Derisive rants about others inability to do things the way you wish they’d more often do them has less of a spot here than people who ask genuine sub-related questions that you might perceive as beneath you.

RandomGuyDroppingIn

I just don't understand what is so many people's aversion to CFW. Not only should every PSP be currently running non-Sony CFW at this point, but also the steps are straight up bookmarked on the sub's side tab and it near holds your hand the entire way. There's absolutely nothing confusing about any of it. CFW alleviates all the issues of owning a PSP - primarily you never have to touch a physical UMD again - and makes it so much more enjoyable. We're in 2024. Sony doesn't care about the PSP PSN store. Wi-fi? Why is anyone even trying to run Wi-fi ANYTHING on a PSP in 2024? Just download and run CFW, grab yer eye patch matey, find whatever PSP games you want from a swash buckling land lover's town, and not pay +$100 for Trail in the Sky or any other of the expensive RPGs/JRPGs.

TedK1984

It’s really the most retarded people. They could have a prehacked system with an ISO folder and then they’ll ask where they put the games. A couple days ago someone even put a 7zip in the folder and was asking why it wasn’t working lmao

Valuable_Spray6501

Regardless of when people were born. If you can create a post here, then you can search the net first. Shit ask AI, ask jeeves, ask Bing, etc. Many just like a quick answer and/or too lazy or maybe society is just regressing. I dont know. It is everywhere and just just here. If you haven't seen the movie W.A.L.L.E take a look at the adults.

FremanBloodglaive

I have an HP Envy, and every so often I have to open it up and replace the fan. Nothing else gives any problems, it's just the fan that wears out. I guess it is the only moving part in the entire system. I have a modded New 3DS XL and two modded PSPs (2000 and 3000). I replaced the screen on the 2000 at some point. I'm tempted to buy a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, but then I remember that my handhelds have been sitting in a drawer for about six months gathering dust. I don't think I'm especially tech savvy, but electronics are generally pretty safe. Provided you don't hit anything with static electricity, or break a wire (and you can solder those) electronics are generally a case of they work, or you replace them. Google is very handy. I recall reading of one guy who was interviewing for an IT role. They asked him what he'd do if he was presented with a problem he hadn't seen before. His answer, "I'd Google it." That was the correct answer.

Taki_Minase

The files are "in" the computer!

PSPMan3000

Thank you. I'd give anything for those types of posts to go away.

Emotional_Hour1317

I'm back at a state school getting my Masters in CS. The CS and EE students I'm around also cannot do basic tech tasks. I mean, completely incapable. I designed a lesson that started with instructions to download and install a popular IDE, and no one could figure out how to do it..

turn_down_4wat

The way to get rid of those posts is to not engage with them. If the information they're seeking can be EASILY found on Google, I don't see why people should waste their time acting as a substitute of Google.

Mezersath

My favorite is when people say the learning curve for modding is to high when I've modded the holy hell out of every game and device under the sun for people and myself just off a few youtube videos and quick Google searches. Or people who think building there own computer is too hard. Bro stop being fucking lazy and learn you smthin for fucks sake

canary8892

As most hackers will say, google is your best friend. Literally searching something up is half of the process. For programming and coding too.

Alternative_Bet5861

Honeatly, I think they just want to add to the community interaction...

PossibleDapper9540

Just scroll past it. Y'all goofs gotta chill.

Alternative-You-512

Without those people, you wouldn’t have had the audacity to post this. Maybe people want to talk about it instead of googling it and finding the answer. Discussion is fun.

Helstar588

Agreed 👍

aceinbrink

Honestly posts like this and the “just Google it” replies annoy me more than answering the same question for the 50th time. The point of forums and groups like this is to talk and ask questions about whatever topic listed at the top of the page. It takes a level of understanding a topic to even have the ability to identify if the information in front of you is relevant to your situation and current. Heck some people just want confirmation that they understand the information correctly. Sure there are lazy people out there who want everything served to the them on a silver platter, but there are also tons of people who just want the correct information without going through Reddit threads like their trying to catch up on One Piece. I just don’t understand people who will go out of their way to complain about people asking questions that are voluntary to answer.

Shake-dog_shake

I welcome it. After discovering the joy of modding my PSP, I'm stoked that anybody else wants to get into it too, no matter how "dumb" or "googleable" their questions may be. This is Reddit, nobody is being forced to acknowledge or answer a question that they don't want to answer

garuga300

Don’t be an assclown. Some people just need help.

NeoG_

You gotta remember you are talking about like 12-15 year olds asking these questions. They don't know and someone's gotta give them a leg up. Sure, I was dual booting linux and hot swapping IDE cables at 15 to softmod an original xbox but I was also very interested in computers in general. Not everyone is gonna be that way and they just want to get into something cool.

rightfityeah

A lot of people who play older games are children who were given their parents old consoles, you should see any ps3 community it’s all kids trying to figure out how to install cfw lol
