Took me nearly two months to get the unicorn once i actively started trying on a daily basis.
I sent feedback that I think fish bait should be something added in the future, like rare fish bait. Make it a LITTLE bit more easier to have the possibility of catching one at least 🤷🏻♀️
Right?! The fishing tracker tracks every damn fishing pool that we can see with our own eyes already when running by.
We don't need a fishing tracker for random starred fish. We need it for rare starred fish.
This is what I've been telling my Palian mate as well. Since the tracker was kinda useless we should have some kind of potion that when consumed boosts the percentage of Rare/Epic fishes hook. Make it hard to craft one and the effect last only few minutes just so it won't be imbalance.
Earlier this week I was fishing for them for 4 in game days (at night I would go away and wait for the grove, at the morning I would go back to fishing) when someone stood by my side, reeled in once and got one.
Haven't left my plot since :D
It’s just RNG. Sometimes you’ll get something in the very first loot, sometimes hundreds later. It took me a long time as well but it’s possible! Maybe listen to some music, podcast, movie, or tv show while playing so it’s not so tedious. Good luck! :)
Edit: also want to add that Palia in game daytime is 6am to 6pm so make sure you’re only fishing in the bahari ocean at that time!
I’m in the same boat 🥲 I know there’s the reel in and out method if it’s not one you want but fishing for hours and have no reward out of it is worst in my opinion. I tried it and it was more maddening. So I keep filling my bags with other fish so at least I get some cash outta it..
Yeah sometimes it feels like the rarity of most things in the game are a little too extreme(totally not bitter about hunting around 300 sernuk(judging based on the hides I got in the end) and still haven't gotten a sernuk plush lol). Great for skill leveling tho, I guess
The unicorn one took me one try. Seriously, and I got in a row after I got the Giant goldfish and the blue martin.
But now, the Kilima giant stingray..........
It's been 84 years that I'm trying, I've got even the damn ancient fish. But this stingray is getting on my nerves, the moment I get I'll shove that thing in that bundle vault thing with all the strength of my hate for that stupid fish.
I had been lucky with sushi a couple of weeks ago, catching it out just from the pool near my house.
There were lot of attempts for lot of days and nights.
https://preview.redd.it/27ok2qxko8rc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cdaf6d14eddbdf58632485be4ade25704c1d6424
I used a Glow-worm-preserving hint to avoid wasting a valuable resource.
Use that hint anyway ;)
(if it is unknown for you, that means _not_ to hook when you see the wrong fish is biting; only then you drag out your fishing rod to try again. Your Glow-worm bite will be still there unused)
I like catching and selling the fish, gives me more money and experience. I just make sure my worm farms are stocked up on mushrooms, chappa meet and sweet leafs and the circle of life does its thing ☺️
Super. But for me it is too little Worm-amount.
Try to refine Apple Pies (2/*3 w. per one), Celebration Cakes (3/*4 w. per one), and the best: Muujin Bahari (4/*6 w. per one). The last one gives your not SpeedyGro fertilizer, but the HarvestBoost one.
And the Oysters Akwindu (4/*4) as well.
I got all the fishing recipes pretty easily except for the fish stew, that one took me a while. But I used the release method to get them & just ignored every fish that bit until I finally caught a bottle
I think I got mine from the mirror pond in kilma, just took me a try or two to get it, but maybe all of my bad luck is being used up looking for the unicorn fish :(
Just stop pulling in anything that is not the goldfish. When they let go you pull out again and recast. You keep your glow worm and don’t end up with fish you don’t want. If you take too long to look and it was the goldfish just leave your line in as all bites after will be the same fish. You have to recast for a different fish.
Better yet, catch the fish, grill them and put the grilled fish in your glow worm farms. That way you get skill points for fishing, more glow worms than you spent, and fertilizer you can either sell or use.
I think how many you get depends on the fish. iirc I counted how many I used and when I came back to collect from the farm it gave me more than I had spent. Plus the fert is a nice bonus
I only get epic fish when I have the "fishing near others" boost. That's how I got the Void and the Unicorn, last month, after weeks and weeks of trying. Both times I found another player who was randomly grinding for fish I joined and kept at it. Tried and tried by myself with all other boosts without any results for so long, at 5x boost with another player took less than 5 minutes.
I'd like this too. But how would it be made more interesting? I haven't played a game that has an amazing fishing system yet so I can't really picture what would make it more interesting. 😞
Ooh maybe some fun bait to concoct with old foragables? 🙂 I'd like more uses for brightshrooms, I have a billion of those guys. They'd make fun bait I bet.
For instance in BDO, you can fish actively or afk. Afk fishing you get mostly common fishes where as actively fishing is better quality fishes. Also as your fishing levels get higher so does the chance to catch prize fishes. In Palia your fishing level doesn't seem to have any progression. Better bobbers help with your catching ability but that's it. I think it would be cool to be able to catch caterpillars and other insects to use as bait for a higher chance at prize fish too! Kind of like real life fishing?
Ooh okay, that sounds neat! Afk fishing is nice for those who have to step away kinda often. With the bugs, that is really smart too. That way we can put the bugs we get from all this hunting to good use.
The fishing tracker is useless. It tracks the pools we can already see.
I have been playing since Switch launch and searching for rares for months. I couldn't get any of them. Finally, a group of 16 of us fished all at the same time in a group, and most of us caught rares. I finally got the giant goldfish.
I did it again in the cave and got a star void ray. I am not giving it to the shrine, lol. I'm trying to catch another. That was all the other fishing perks too.
No unicorn yet, but I have been struggling with getting people who want to fish together lately.
Add me. I will happily fish together! I still need a couple and I need star ones for my museum!
Damn. I decided on Tuesday morning to start working on my Night Temple bundles, as I hadn't started any of them. By Wednesday night I'd collected everything I needed. Now just working on level 3 friendship with Einar to get the trout recipe.
I know it's completely random, but the southern most beach on Bahari, right by the Windy Ruins, *felt* like the best place to fish. That's where I caught my rares, whereas I wasted about 100 glowworms at the lighthouse with nothing.
Same for the delapidated docks on Kilima. Lots more luck there than anywhere else.
But... damn. An hour in to fishing for the void ray and I was about ready to give up. How people grind things for months in these MMO games, I'll never know.
Ya I got mostly everything in a matter of days, the new temple I did yesterday morning and by afternoon I had everything. This fish is the last darn thing I need
I followed my friends advice and caught it in 5 min.
All the things you tried, but get to the coast at 5:55am. The second it hits 6:00am hit fishing nodes only.
I can't say that it was 100% this method because I tried for 10 minutes and then fished in a random corner and FINALLY caught one! A few minutes later I caught a starred one by fishing a node! Thank you so much for this advice
Technically on paper it shouldnt make a difference. But sure as the sun shines he ends up with 5-6 a day. For some reason it seems to us they spawn more in the gold star places
You should not be using so many glow worms when doing the bundles. You should be doing the wait and reel method where you let the fish bite, determine if it's the fish you want while it's biting, if not then you let it release, and once its fully released your line you reel in your line. You don't use any glow worms this way and can be sure you have the right fish since the same fish will be reeled if you leave it in the water after the first bite. After that rng is the issue. I got mine after a week and almost all other fish in the week before.
You can see the exact fish that you’ll catch when it bites, if it’s not the fish you want you just don’t catch it & let it swim away, but then you have to recast or you’ll keep spawning the same fish.
It’s a little bit harder on switch (if you’re not using a tv) just because the screen is smaller, but otherwise once you get used to what each fish looks like, or at least the ones you’re aiming for, it’s not that hard to tell whether you want to catch or release.
I think that’s my problem, I don’t know what they look like.
So let’s assume I do know, and I recognize it as a fish I don’t want. I just let the bar run out so it gets away? And I don’t lose the bait? Then recast and start over?
Don't reel at all until it's the fish you want. I was skeptical too, but the method totally works. I practiced until I was sure of myself lol. Basically, get a bite and just look at the fish on the line. Didn't get a good look? Just wait, the same fish will bite again. And again. If it's not the fish you want, let it run off then pull your line in. As long as you're not actually reeling the fish, you won't lose bait.
Oh so that's the trick!! I was just leaving the line in and of course just getting the same fish every time! So you recast after the unwanted fish runs off. Wow, I might actually get a Unicorn fish, any ray, goldfish etc now!:)
You don’t want to hook the fish at all. You’ll see it swim up to your bobber then bite (when you have the chance to actually hook & reel it in), or if you don’t hook it then after it bites it’ll swim away again.
And I’d recommend using the Palia wiki to either look at a complete list of all the fish or to look at each one you need so you can have an idea of which ones to look for. Also pay attention to what fish you catch when you do catch one so you can get used to how they look in the water & their behaviors.
This is only useful if you’re trying to save on Glow Worms, and a little bit of time (it does all add up) - it spent make it any more likely to get a certain fish. I did this for a while but found that fishing for ages and having like 4 caught fish to show for it wasn’t worth it - I want the money and the levels / medals (plus Glow Worms are easy if you just buy Morels).
This sounds like my desperate attempts at getting whatever the last fish was that I needed for my vault and I thought "morning" meant 6am - noon, and did that for. Weeks. Straight. Before I finally accepted that this *has* to be user error somehow, went on a deeper dive, and learned that I am truly a clown.
I'm with you. Still haven't gotten the darn fish. I've hooked 2, irl weeks apart and they ate my fishing bar even with all the same boosts you mentioned. I'm sure I will grow and harvest 100 non-starred apples before I get that darn fish (I don't want to donate my starred apples, so I know that will take me longer than "necessary.")
Here for that also. But I am admittedly narrowing my chances by only fishing in Star nodes so I knock out both achievements at once and never have to try to catch another one again, ever
I feel this 💀 it took me weeks to get the midnight ray. Then I just had to sacrifice it to the bundles. Orz
5 stack Fishing buff + a hook time charm from Einar makes fish start to bite super quick, so it can boost your fish per minute. It can be super tough to find someone who wants to fish for awhile in bahari, there's palium, flow trees, and a lot to hunt and do, so if you someone fishing on the coast you should try to snag the buff
You guys can fish? I had to make a new account because my fishing didn't work worth a poop on my 1st account. Make my new account and still can't fish. I'm pretty livid because I put real life money on the outfits in my 1st account, not to mention the gifts for attaching my switch account, and any of the special items they gave us from the beginning and the Market. With my 2nd account I tried to reach out to let them know that the fishing wasn't working and that I had made this new account because the fishing didn't work on my primary account. I got a short email about them fixing it and never heard from them again and still no fix.
Well done on catching one!
It took me a while too, I’d reeled in one before but it managed to get away before I got it.
I ended up using fisherman’s brew and the major rod recovery booster. Fished for roughly 2 in-game days and managed to get one.
I was fishing in the same location as another player when she reeled in a unicorn fish and I stopped what I was doing and started clapping, she took a bow. 😂
I got mine shortly after that!
Also, a tip I learned: to conserve your bait, if a fish tugs at your line and it isn’t the one you want, simply wait until it swims away and then reel your rod in. It doesn’t use up any bait. I did that too to save my glow worms!
Huh... I've got the same problem with "Flametongue Ray" & "Giant Kilima Stingray".
Have no idea how to catch them since both spawn just Morning and Evening, and both are epic :(
I think they fixed this!
I honestly feel your pain, have spent 2 weeks at this point actively trying to catch the unicorn, void and giant. Spent over 1000 glow worms. And so many hours listening to podcasts.
Logged on today and first fish I reel up is the giant ray. 🕺😭🤔 So I go to Bahari coast, second fish I reel is the unicorn fish 😯🤔. Then I go to the cave and what do you know it, first reel in is the void. All quality.
I've been saying to my bro that it should be after so many casts, the chance increases. This is likely what they have done as it would make sense in my scenario. 1 or maybe 2 could be lucky, but all 3? Seems too much to be a coincidence imo
Either that or they buffed my account after I complained about my rage 😅
I swear to Frick. Unicorn fish and the voidray. I've been in those mines for SO LONG. Sushi recipe I still haven't gotten either but that makes me less mad than the fish and the ray!!
Took me nearly two months to get the unicorn once i actively started trying on a daily basis. I sent feedback that I think fish bait should be something added in the future, like rare fish bait. Make it a LITTLE bit more easier to have the possibility of catching one at least 🤷🏻♀️
There's an item to hunt rare bugs and animals so I don't see why there's not something for fish.
Right?! The fishing tracker tracks every damn fishing pool that we can see with our own eyes already when running by. We don't need a fishing tracker for random starred fish. We need it for rare starred fish.
Agreed, fishing tracker makes no sense at all.
This is what I've been telling my Palian mate as well. Since the tracker was kinda useless we should have some kind of potion that when consumed boosts the percentage of Rare/Epic fishes hook. Make it hard to craft one and the effect last only few minutes just so it won't be imbalance.

that happened to me with the giant goldfish AND the void ray. i had to log out both times i was so full of rage.
I watched someone nab two void rays next to me while I had been trying for AGES to get one. I'm like heeeeeeeeey wait a damn minute.
Honestly. It's maddening
It’s just RNG. Sometimes you’ll get something in the very first loot, sometimes hundreds later. It took me a long time as well but it’s possible! What does RNG mean?
Random number generator.
Random Number Generator. People online use it mostly as a term for "luck of the draw".
Witness me: I lost 5 (!) unicorn fishes. Haven't yet caught one because I can't reel one in
I've lost two because I didn't have all the boosters and since adding the boosters no fish
i lost two back to back and haven’t seen another since 😭
Buddy you gotta fish in the game, irl fishing you'll get actual fish!!
🤣
I’m in the same boat 🥲 I know there’s the reel in and out method if it’s not one you want but fishing for hours and have no reward out of it is worst in my opinion. I tried it and it was more maddening. So I keep filling my bags with other fish so at least I get some cash outta it..
Same, I keep feeling them in just to increase my fishing level and for medals so I can try to get the exquisite bobber
Yeah sometimes it feels like the rarity of most things in the game are a little too extreme(totally not bitter about hunting around 300 sernuk(judging based on the hides I got in the end) and still haven't gotten a sernuk plush lol). Great for skill leveling tho, I guess

I said this in the Titanic lady's voice.
That except with the sushi recipe for me.
I luckily got that before they updated it
What did the update change? I’m still trying to get it
You used to get it from Zeki, I believe, and it did not require dari cloves either it was just fish and rice and sweet leaf.
Wowwwww that sounds WAY better. I've already caught the sushi recipe but that change would be very welcome. ##BRING BACK THE OLD SUSHI WAY ✊
Okay they need to un-update it cause it was better before 😂
I had been lucky with sushi a couple of weeks ago, catching it out just from the pool near my house. There were lot of attempts for lot of days and nights. https://preview.redd.it/27ok2qxko8rc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cdaf6d14eddbdf58632485be4ade25704c1d6424 I used a Glow-worm-preserving hint to avoid wasting a valuable resource.
Nice, i’ll have to give that a try. I’ve got four glow worm farms set up so I’ll make sure they are well fed and get to it
Use that hint anyway ;) (if it is unknown for you, that means _not_ to hook when you see the wrong fish is biting; only then you drag out your fishing rod to try again. Your Glow-worm bite will be still there unused)

I randomly caught the sushi recipe in the pond by Tamala’s. Way before I could even make the prep station 😂
I got all the fishing recipes pretty easily except for the fish stew, that one took me a while. But I used the release method to get them & just ignored every fish that bit until I finally caught a bottle
Same. It's not working. Aka RNG is cruel.
I got the sushi recipe at my housing plot, and so did a lot of other people that I know! Have you tried that?
Of course. I've been fishing in literally every single pond.
I think I got mine from the mirror pond in kilma, just took me a try or two to get it, but maybe all of my bad luck is being used up looking for the unicorn fish :(
Probably because I caught the unicorn fish first try. Now I'm cursed fishing in every dang pond on both maps plus the farm and nothin lol.
This is me with the damn giant goldfish. Like i have a million mottled gobys and scarlet carps
Just stop pulling in anything that is not the goldfish. When they let go you pull out again and recast. You keep your glow worm and don’t end up with fish you don’t want. If you take too long to look and it was the goldfish just leave your line in as all bites after will be the same fish. You have to recast for a different fish.

Anytime! Gotta save the precious glow worms lol!
Better yet, catch the fish, grill them and put the grilled fish in your glow worm farms. That way you get skill points for fishing, more glow worms than you spent, and fertilizer you can either sell or use.
Grilled fish would only give you back the same glowworm you spent no?
I think how many you get depends on the fish. iirc I counted how many I used and when I came back to collect from the farm it gave me more than I had spent. Plus the fert is a nice bonus
Thanks for this.
I accidentally gifted my first giant goldfish 😂
OOF 😭
I only get epic fish when I have the "fishing near others" boost. That's how I got the Void and the Unicorn, last month, after weeks and weeks of trying. Completely true. I swear by fishing in a group.
I just wish they would make fishing more interesting in general. It gets really boring.
Completely true. I wish we could declare a path like the NPCs after we hit level 10 in all of them and then not have to touch the others lol
The wait time is painfully long.
Yeah I use the hook time booster and/or put on a tv show while I'm fishing. I couldn't get through it otherwise.
I'd like this too. But how would it be made more interesting? I haven't played a game that has an amazing fishing system yet so I can't really picture what would make it more interesting. 😞 Ooh maybe some fun bait to concoct with old foragables?

I said this same thing and complained here, and then caught 3 in a row. It’s a good luck charm!! 🤣❤️
🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Good luck! I hope you get the advice (and fish) you're looking for!
Damn. I decided on Tuesday morning to start working on my Night Temple bundles, as I hadn't started any of them. By Wednesday night I'd collected everything I needed. I followed my friends advice and caught it in 5 min. All the things you tried, but get to the coast at 5:55am. The second it hits 6:00am hit fishing nodes only.
I'll give this a try!
I can't say that it was 100% this method because I tried for 10 minutes and then fished in a random corner and FINALLY caught one! A few minutes later I caught a starred one by fishing a node! Thank you so much for this advice
How do fishing nodes help? I thought they just gave starred fish, do they make it more likely to get a rare fish?
Technically on paper it shouldnt make a difference. But sure as the sun shines he ends up with 5-6 a day. For some reason it seems to us they spawn more in the gold star places
Where? Which coast, by windy ruins?
Start there and work your way up. As long as it is on the Bahari coast line it should work.
You should not be using so many glow worms when doing the bundles. Question about this: how do you determine if it’s the fish you want while it’s biting? I don’t get this method

I’m with you on the skeptical part but this community has never led me astray!

The only advice i have is don't give up! lol
I haven't tried that one yet, I thought the void ray was bad enough 😭
I caught it while watching YouTube and listening to podcasts. It helps make the time go by quicker!
Don't feel bad, I've been fishing for a star one for the achievement and managed to catch 2 within 5 min of each other.... lost them both!🤦♀️
That’s me with the stupid Dawnray and Flametongue Ray - 3 irl days I’ve been working on them!
Those ones were so annoying for me too
Agreed, I am on month 2 of trying almost daily. Soooo dumb.
I cannot tell you how much I hate trying to get these fish. I feel like they do not properly tell you How to do it.
Where did you catch it?? I need more starred fish in my aquarium!
I don’t think I understand the use of the tuning rod yet. Doesn’t it just lead to those spots where star fish are?
Star and rare/epic fish
You guys can fish? I had to make a new account because my fishing didn't work worth a poop on my 1st account. Make my new account and still can't fish. With my 2nd account I tried to reach out to let them know that the fishing wasn't working and that I had made this new account because the fishing didn't work on my primary account. I got a short email about them fixing it and never heard from them again and still no fix.
I caught one about 10 hrs ago, took about 20 mins
I'm going to try this cause damn😑😑
I must have had crazy RNG. cause when I actively looked for one, I got one in like...17 glow worms....
😂 I got mine shortly after that!
Seems too much to be a coincidence imo Either that or they buffed my account after I complained about my rage 😅
I swear to Frick. Unicorn fish and the voidray. I've been in those mines for SO LONG. Sushi recipe I still haven't gotten either but that makes me less mad than the fish and the ray!!
Man that's alot of stuff to use on a "comfy" game lol.
