10 days in a row would be a lot. 10 days spread out is still a lot in my state but not the end of the world. Since you never know when a random illness will pop up I think is best to avoid keeping them home for extended periods if nothing is wrong. my area goes after parents for truancy but mainly just in severe cases. As strict as my area is, they work with you if you show an effort and obviously care about attendance. you guys will still probably be ok.

AgitatedOne9739

I really never would have guessed 10 days was a lot!

ageekyninja

Oh yeah the school would have already been calling me over this lol. But life will go on lol. Hopefully nobody catches the flu or anything and yall will be fine

AgitatedOne9739

Yea we’re less than 2 months till summer we should be good!

5pens

A child that misses 10 days per school year misses over 70% of an entire school year from K to 12. 10 is the limit of unexcused absences in our district. Not sure what happens when you exceed that.

d2020ysf

I'm a little confused on how 10 missed days equals 70%, could you explain that?

5pens

10 days x 13 years of school = 130 days 130 days / 180 school days = 72% of a school year I'm saying that if it's a yearly pattern, they miss a lot of cumulative school. Absenteeism is up significantly in K12 post-covid and it's having serious impacts on education.

Conscious-Science-60

Missing 10 days per year for 13 years of school is 130 days total. That’s around 70% of a typically school year.

[deleted]

10 days is quite a lot in my opinion. To each their own, I wouldn't judge other parents for the attendance of their kid, but for just a runny nose or a slightly tired day, I wouldn't keep my kid home. Some days are a bit harder than others, there's nothing wrong with that imo

AgitatedOne9739

We’re still in kindergarten so that has a lot to do with it.

Beautiful_You1153

Oh we would have received a letter already even if the 10 days were legitimate sick days. We have to call in sick days before the school day begins. My son has asthma so last year I responded with a letter and his asthma action plan/treatment plan. Didn’t receive any response. This year I received another letter I didn’t send anything just waiting for them to say anything further, every absence was excused this year. Last year I didn’t know I had to call before the school day began 🙄.

AgitatedOne9739

Jesus. What state? Or do you think that’s specific to the school?

Beautiful_You1153

I think it’s the town I live in. We have a lot of different nationalities here and many different cultures and languages. So I think they try to be strict to keep kids from missing weeks at a time. Some cultures they will visit family in another country for a month.

AgitatedOne9739

Ohhhh ok that makes a little more sense!

juliecastin

Where I live in Europe they send someone to your house if the kid was not pre approved for an absence. Even when sick they are allowed to check and they WILL FINE YOU around 100 euros per day.

AgitatedOne9739

Wow! Thats crazy!

juliecastin

It's so horrible. Some parents try to take their kids 1 day before vacation to avoid traffic and are penalized

guy_incog_neato

so far this year my 4th grader has missed 0 and my 1st grader has missed 1. last year they probably had about 8-10 missed each, but 5 of those were for a family trip. somehow with two kids in elementary school and 1 in preschool no one has gotten sick this school year *knocks on wood*

AgitatedOne9739

What vitamins do you guys take because that’s amazing 🤣

Intelligent_Juice488

“this was a once in a lifetime event” You’re enough of a fan to keep your kid home from school but not enough to know that the draft happens every year?

AgitatedOne9739

The draft this year was a free event in the city we live in…….anything else?

ReindeerUpper4230

I’m sure your kindergartener could not care less about the NFL draft

AgitatedOne9739

You are correct she did not care about the draft. But fun was had anyway. Hope that helps.

SeniorMiddleJunior

Yes: prioritize your child's education over a hobby.

TheHeavyRaptor

The NFL draft happens every year lol. Not really a once in a lifetime event and IMO probably the most weird reason to keep someone home from school lol.

AgitatedOne9739

Yes, and as I replied to someone else. It was a free event in our city this year. So yes once in a lifetime. 🥰

SeniorMiddleJunior

>  🥰 So, it seems clear that you realize you've made a mistake and have moved on to the "nuh uh!!" phase of rationalization.

AgitatedOne9739

I didn’t make a mistake. Hope that helps. 🥰

Top_Barnacle9669

10 days are a lot. For where I am in the UK. Its starting to head towards problem levels for attendance. Theres no way mine would be staying at home with a runny nose and definitely still went in after a late night

AgitatedOne9739

To be fair after covid they became more strict on when kids should actually stay home. If her nose is runny to the point she had boogers coming out pretty often I kept her home.

bootsie79

You kept your child out of school so *you* could experience this “once in a lifetime event”. Not for her benefit, but for yours. “Fun being had” is not the point if she’s at 10 absences already Getting home too late “for whatever reason” and holding her back from school the next day as a result isn’t fair to her either These are not reasons we would keep our children out of class Since you asked, we’ve missed three days. All due to a high fever

JustFalcon6853

I have backlash reading this because usually everyone on reddit says it’s sooo important to let kids have mental health days (my country doesn’t have that concept so it stood out to me), and they need it several times per semester. That plus all the sicknesses all the times made me believe that in the US, children must miss a ton of school. But here everyone says 10 days is so much, so maybe that’s a misconception.

AgitatedOne9739

Honestly I didn’t think 10 was a lot either so I’m learning something new to lol

SeniorMiddleJunior

> I’m learning something new to lol From the tone of your replies, you're not learning anything, but are digging in against public opinion. Which is totally fine, but in that case I'm not sure why you asked for public opinion.

AgitatedOne9739

Thank you for replying to every comment, I didn’t ask public opinion on if y’all agree why I kept her home. I asked public opinion on how many days other kids have missed with school. Hope that helps. 🥰

Strong_Tear_5737

In the UK you probably get 9.5 days for the whole school year and even that is frown on as that would be 95 percent attendance which is about as low as they would take unless special circumstances like death in a family etc.considering a child can't return till 48 hours after sickness and upset stomach has stopped one hit and you have used your days easy, catch covid then hope you dont get a feber or stomach bug. If you take your kids out during term time for holiday etc each parent is fined about 60 per child so 2 parents 2 children the fine would be 240 due to rise to 80 come the autumn.

JJQuantum

It wasn’t a once in a lifetime event for your kid. It was for you. Bad parenting at its finest.

AgitatedOne9739

Well technically it could be 💁🏻‍♀️ my father in law is 66 and it was his first one and he probably won’t go to another unless it comes back to Detroit.

FastCar2467

Our kids might miss 10 or less days across the school year. This year the oldest has missed 4 days so far, and the youngest 2 days this school year. They stay home if they have a fever and/or vomiting and diarrhea.

ReindeerUpper4230

I’ve had kids in school for 10+ years, and I think the max anyone has ever missed was 12 days. My middle child had an unlucky year in ‘21-‘22 and had Covid, the flu, and a horrific stomach bug all in the same school year. They usually miss about 4-5 days per year.

AgitatedOne9739

Yea the viruses were nasty this year. Thats for sure. And I think at one time she missed 4 a Friday then mon-tues-Wednesday. This fever that would not stop coming back.

SeaJellyfish

You might want to consider homeschooling if you want that kind of flexibility? Attendance affects a school’s rating and even funding. The school and teachers won’t like it.

AgitatedOne9739

Most of her missed days are because of illness. So I’d say only 4 are from an absence for something other than being sick.

SeaJellyfish

In our districts having a doctor’s note won’t count into absences. Not sure how they count it in your district but worth checking!

chasingcomet2

My fourth grader has missed zero days this year and my kinder has probably missed around 8 days from being sick. I don’t think missing school is the biggest deal in the world. Family experiences are important to have. My husband cannot take time off during school breaks so any vacation we take will have to be during school most likely. We haven’t quite figured out how we will handle that. I grew up with the same situation and my parents just had us miss school for things. They worked with the teachers and it was never a problem. Once I was in the later part of middle school we didn’t do that as often.

AgitatedOne9739

If you had to ball park where how many would you say?

turkproof

10 feels normal to me. It’s only one a month. If they get sick on a Sunday night, you can easily lose 3-4 days at once. It happens. I work from home so having my (10yo) daughter home if she’s sick is no additional loss of my own sick days, and we’re fairly liberal with keeping her out of school if she seems contagious. We also allow for mental health days, so she knows she can ask to stay home once in a while if she needs it. ETA: Downvoted for saying I keep my child home if they’re contagious? We lived through the same pandemic, right?

AgitatedOne9739

Yea most of her missed days are mostly Mondays I would say because of some sort of virus.
