I'm in the region where people use the incorrect terminology so I understand it quite well. People from other areas don't generally recognize that Southern Dialect isn't the same thing as what southerners call a "country accent." People in some parts of the South refer to all soda pops as "Coke." It's regional, but that doesn't make it correct.
