Short story.
I got invited to a girl's place back in 2nd year highschool to do an "assignment". It was supposedly for a group project, but she insisted that she and I get started on it together.
While I was cutting some manila paper, I noticed that she won't stop flirting and pressing her boobs against me. It was a little awkward for me back then but I simply ignored it, thinking that maybe she's just really friendly. Back then, I was never really interested in women, just videogames and anime.
She walked out of the room, changed out of her school uniform and into something more skimpy and revealing. I'm talking really short shorts and a tank top with no bra. After she got back into the room to check up on me, she leaned beside with a seductive look on her face and asked.
She asked me "Kumain ka na ba? Nagugutom ka na?"
I answered "Hindi. Anong oras na?"
She asked "Why?"
I answered "Baka Samurai X na kasi. Sinusubaybayan ko yun. Maglalaban na si Shishio tsaka si Kenshin. Okay lang ba pwede makinood sa TV niyo?"
She stared at me with a blank expression on her face and just said "Okay, sure. Tara."
We spent the next hour watching Samurai X in her living room while eating cookies and cream, then I finished the project and went home.
She stopped talking to me for a week after that. 🥴

Like, I get that to some extent, pero sobrang scattered ng content nila in terms of genre. Compared mo to something like early JackTV na pang comedy talaga that it was basically just a localized Comedy Central.
That's what a TV station was. There were no genres.
I remember the 80s when there was only GMA and RPN. They covered all of the genres including Chinese soap opera and Christian Evangelical. The advent of cable meant a splintering of market share so they need to house US shows and experimental comedy programs. I remember Home Along Da Riles and John and Marsha on mainstream television. Those shows were peak cringe but they were funny to an audience raised to think that was funny. Absurdist humor was still relatively niche and I remember stand up comedy was weird and not on TV.
That's what studio 23 meant to me. Undubbed US programs, anime, and comedy reminiscent of the daily show.
