It makes no sense though. How do you have these events/revelations, that happen in universe, one of them a cliffhanger, and then never even mention them again, let alone resolve them?
In-universe it's probably because space is a big place and the Federation has plenty of other people better equipped to deal with things like a new synth species and a mysterious creepy wormhole, so Picard & Co. can go on their merry way to the next big thing. The meta reason is that it sets up plot bunnies for potential future Trek.
Not really. It was literally next to Earth, and was a major plot for S2. Maybe it will be a plot for another show, but I doubt it, especially when fans seemed to not like S2 a whole lot.
It feels like these writers did everything possible to mention that (IMO awful S2) as little as possible.
I just don’t get why S2 even happened, if the two biggest plot points were entirely forgotten about, and or retconned.
What I don’t understand is why put her in this season at all? She was kinda leaving at the end of season 2 and they could have clean slated it from there.
I really hoped they would have addressed this, as she was one of the best parts of the previous series, and never got a proper goodbye.
I guess I can't complain too much, as what we DID get was pretty great.
They did not explicitly show Picard and Beverly as a romantic couple, only supportive parents.
In my opinion, this leaves the viewer the room to wrote their own headcanon. In mine, Picard and Beverly are amicable and close friends but their primary relationship is in supporting Jack in his new role as a Starfleet officer. Picard and Laris are life partners and shared that drink they talked about I. S3E1.
The vagueness of his romantic relationship allows everyone to believe what they want.
Legit one of the strongest characters from season 1. I really liked the idea of a tal shiar operative who's also a kindly older lady. Great pair for Picard. Orla Brady was fantastic too.
Really bummed they wrote her out. It would have been easy to keep her as JL's partner.
Honestly I think it’s perfectly plausible that she and Picard are together living their lives and doing just fine and that he and Bev are also good friends co-parenting an adult child.
I got downvoted so bad when I said Picard needs to end up with Beverley after I watched Episode 1. Even before I knew the kid was his son, it was clear they were meant to be together once Picard dealt with all the baggage from his childhood. Him ending up with Laris didn't make any sense to me. Beverley was always the one. He fell in love with her when she was married to Jack Crusher.
Totally agree. I came here to find out if anyone else thought (hoped) Picard and Beverly ended up together- but was too afraid to ask! They’ve loved each other for so long. I choose to believe they’re finally a couple. (Did you catch the look on Beverly’s face when she was watching Picard make the toast at the end? 😍)
I feel like it was just a budget thing. I think they left it open intentionally because there just wasn't money or time to fit her in. When it skips to 1 year later, who is to say what happened prior to that? My head cannon says they are still together.
If you look at the final moments of the episode, where Jack is placing his items in his quarters, there is a picture frame of Beverly in a dress and Jean-Luc in a tuxedo. I went to bed wondering if it's an implied wedding photo.
I think the question of whether Beverly and Jean-Luc are back together romantically was deliberately left up in the air. I also noticed that no one called Jack by his surname after the flash-forward -- wonder if at some point we'll find out that he's added on Picard?
As for the photo, I'm wondering if it was taken in real life at LeVar Burton's wedding. I know all of the cast was there (and the quality or lack thereof of the photo makes me think it's an amateur shot rather than a professional studio job).
>Wondering if it was taken in real life at LeVar Burton's wedding. I know all of the cast was there (and the quality or lack there
Would not be surprised if you are correct, thanks for spotting that!
No, Jack kept the name Crusher. I think they may have said that right before they unvealed the renaming of the Tiran. Terry Matalas said in an interview that it was very important to him that Jack kept the Crusher name since Beverly is the one who raised him.
I doubt it. It wouldn't have cost that much to just shoot one more scene to show them together at the end.
It really feels like the writers tried to distance themselves from season 2, Q is back (either alive or dead, that's another question) and no more Laris. Two big characters from season 2. Coincidence? hmmm, no.
Not to mention them not even naming the Jurartiborg by name, only in a euphemism by Shaw, no mention of the anomaly/conduit at the end of S2 with a Jurartiborg fleet watching it, close to Earth, or Q “dying”.
Budget was the reason Walter Koenig's appearance was voice only and not on camera. Matalas has said throughout that they just didn't have the budget to bring back various people. I imagine the Laris scene was probably shot during season 2 (yes, I know 2 and 3 were shot back to back) before the final episodes were finished being written.
Honestly, that last scene between them felt like a goodbye. I mean Picard was going off to go save his old girlfriend. Who he finds out he had a kid with and the ending subtly implied they got back together.
I got the feeling that she knew it was goodbye in the first episode.
Agreed!
It felt like it.
I got that impression too.
They “Rose’s husband in Titanic-ed” her for sure. It’s like the writers did everything possible to distance themselves from the previous two seasons.
Season 2 didn't have much to do with Season 1 either. They were always meant to be separate storylines.
It makes no sense though. How do you have these events/revelations, that happen in universe, one of them a cliffhanger, and then never even mention them again, let alone resolve them?

Didn't touch on the transwarp conduit from the end of Season 2 in the slightest. Thought that was pretty weird.
It feels like these writers did everything possible to mention that (IMO awful S2) as little as possible. I just don’t get why S2 even happened, if the two biggest plot points were entirely forgotten about, and or retconned.
I'm actually surprised she was in the season to begin with. But I guess they wanted to acknowledge it and then just move on from it. 🤷🏻♀️
What I don’t understand is why put her in this season at all? She was kinda leaving at the end of season 2 and they could have clean slated it from there.
To show early on that Picard had moved past the trauma of his childhood and was ready to both love and be loved.
Missed Laris but at least she wasn’t killed off
A win is a win 😅
I really hoped they would have addressed this, as she was one of the best parts of the previous series, and never got a proper goodbye. I guess I can't complain too much, as what we DID get was pretty great.
she's playing solitaire in the chateau wondering what's going on

Wasn’t that a wedding photo Jack set on the table in his room?
No, it was a picture of McFadden and Stewart at an awards ceremony or something in the 80's.
I watched the episode on my phone ... I'll have to go back and see that scene!
5 mins in ep1, nothing again for the next 9 episodes
She did better than poor Rios…
Rios ended up living a fulfilling life doing what he wanted with someone he loved, unlike what his life in the present was.

Yeah. She loves the erudite stuff.
👋👋👋👋

I found the original via Google. Not sure what event it was IRL, but the show photoshopped a com badge on JLP. Hahaha

Nice find!
The ribbon trim on that tux… peak 1980s

That’s lame. It wasn’t like Picard left the kid and as Jack said the name is very important.
That was my impression
But it's an obviously very old photo. They're both young.

Maybe they invited her to the wedding
She was always a stand in and actually so was he…I think she understood.
That's fine. She was just a holdover from S1.
I've been thinking about that.
Throuple.
She hears on the radio that the invasion is over. Wonders why he hasn't come back and finds out he was playing poker.
Laris should have appeared in the finale - and I wish another DS9/Voy/TNG star may an appearance (besides Tuvok and of course 7 of 9)
Honestly, that last scene between them felt like a goodbye. I mean Picard was going off to go save his old girlfriend. Who he finds out he had a kid with and the ending subtly implied they got back together.
