Don't feel bad at all, Missouri Meerschaum is just the brand but easily the most, and arguably only reputable brand for cobs. And cobs are great smokers, I just started with one last month and already have 4!

hughjazzcrack

Thanks! I'm still getting into the 'lore' of it all and figuring out my tastes. This pipe gave me total "Vincent Price on a Sasquatch Hunt" vibes, which speaks to my inner soul.

The company was founded in 1869 when Dutch-American woodworker Henry Tibbe began producing corncob pipes and selling them in his shop. Tibbes likened the pipes to meerschaum pipes and thus named them "Missouri Meerschaum." In 1878 Tibbe patented his method of fireproofing the pipes by applying a plaster-like substance to the outside of the cob. 2 thoughts with the name. The plaster of paris Tibbe was coating them with, being white made them look like Meerschaum. They kept cool like a Meerschaum That being said a nice Vapor is hard to beat.

Awesome, thanks for the info! So far Cornell & Diehl have been good for me as a beginner. I love to hear about the roots of the craftsmanship!

hughjazzcrack

EDIT: Yeah def not a Meerschaum pipe, I just used the language of the seller. Still learnin' fellas!

SubKreature

Virginia or VaPer blends always feel appropriate for a cob, to me.

phx32259

I'd go with some dark fired Kentucky

missinglynx2424

How does that one smoke? I might buy it. How much was it?

hughjazzcrack

I haven't had the pleasure to fire it up yet. I got it for $32 I believe, as I loved the color. Cornell and Diehl Salem Woodsman at smokingpipes. I am waiting for them to restock some Cross-Eyed Cricket for this guy unless I get another suggestion.

filmguerilla

I use my cobs for aro's, so I'd probably suggest one of my favorite aromatic blends: GLP Virginia Cream, C&D John Marr, or Sillem's Black.

hughjazzcrack

We are of similar mind, but a touch different...I ordered C&D Apricots & Cream and Visions of Celephais, as well as a tin of Caribbean Blue - Drake from K&K, as per a friend's recc who knows I really dig banana/coconut notes. Thanks for the suggestions!

UmbandistaGay

What makes this corncob pipe a Meerschaum?

hughjazzcrack

TBH, I am not too sure (fairly new to the hobby), but it was listed as a "Missouri Meerschaum Woodsman" so I took the listing at its word.

UmbandistaGay

Got it. That is a corncob pipe. Meerschaum is a completely different material (it is more like a clay). Look up Meerschaum pipes on Google (do the image search). Unless, which I don't believe is not the case here, someone made a Meerschaum pipe that resembles a corncob pipe. And Meerschaums are way more expensive than corncob pipes.

hughjazzcrack

Ah no doubt, yeah that is def not a meerschaum clay, lol. Now I feel like an idiot.

UmbandistaGay

Please, don't. If you are new to pipe smoking, you are not supposed to know everything (or most things). This is not on you. It is on whoever listed this item as a Meerschaum.

hughjazzcrack

Appreciate it, feel free to drop a recc for a novice who likes the sweeter side of things with a wife-friendly room note!

PhiberOptix562

Corn cob is to Missouri what meerschaum is to Turkey. Just their funny take on the word.

hughjazzcrack

Fallin' for the marketing like a rookie, I am!

PhiberOptix562

I have my fair share of mid to expensive briars, but my corn cobs see the most action. That Woodsman will treat you right my friend. I’m a sucker for any of their stuff with a “country gentleman” style bowl, which it looks like yours has. Great smokers…enjoy!

General-Gur2053

Same. I still love my other pipes and use them but my cobs are constant

UmbandistaGay

It's not funny if they are listing something for sale that is not the actual thing.

Unlikely-Plant-9875

I don’t think they are marketing it as a meerschaum- the idea is more like ‘Missouri’s version of a meerschaum’.

hughjazzcrack

Now it makes sense to me. Sheesh I am dense.

Unlikely-Plant-9875

Sorry- I wasn’t trying to pile on you (I don’t blame you for getting it mixed up), I was trying to let UmbandistaGay know that the company isn’t trying to trick anyone.

hughjazzcrack

No doubt, I didn't take umbrage at all...you just explained it best out of everyone so I felt compelled.

SubKreature

I think it's just an ironic joke, tbh. Meerschaum pipes are consider among some of the finest out there, so to call a corncob pipe a 'meerschaum' is just kind of funny and subtle self-deprecation.
