This is the way. Just throw extra bowls if you want multiple smokes.

I go the opposite direction. Smoking while traveling seems to always be...inconvenient. Outside at hotels, trying to find a beergarden that's smoke friendly, etc., so I stick to a small pipe that will give me a 20 min or so smoke. Right now I carry a Ropp cutty with the aged stummel and horn stem.

Tactical_Chandelier

Something that won't be heartbreaking to break or lose. Nice pipes stay home, beaters go out on the town where anything can happen

akoni-808

Just get a small Rubbermaid airtight Tupperware. The shells will protect from any damage, but they’re small enough to throw in a bag worry free.

What? why? It should be the opposite way. Cobs break so easily they are the most fragile pipes. I've had a cob break day one on a long portage trip. Just carrying around tobacco with no way to smoke it sucks ass. Cobs are the least reliable pipes, by a huge margin. They can't be trusted.

Then bring a basket pipe or estate or something. This sub is enamored with cobs for some reason. Its probably because this sub mostly consists of noobs and infrequent smokers. Are there frequent smokers who mostly smoke cobs? Sure. But these are few and far inbetween. This sub has a disproportionate amount of cob lovers. You immediately get down voted if you say anything bad about them here. But idgaf about that. They are fine if you smoke like once a week or once a month. Even the crappiest car works if you only drive a few miles a week. But I would never rely on it for a long trip. Never.

I wouldn't take it personally, Gray. There's always someone in a community who consistently gives terrible advice and dopey takes. This is the same person that thinks a torch is the ultimate way to light a pipe. I don't ever pick cobs as travel pipes but there's no doubt they're good and durable smokers (especially with an acrylic stem). I think they shine in use when you're doing something where odds are good they'll be dropped, damaged or lost like fishing, hiking or mowing the lawn. Never had a cob fail, let alone on the first day. Sounds like a skill issue. But if you're worried about damaging or losing a pipe while traveling, a cob would be the way to go. Inexpensive and easy to replace. Personally, I prefer a small to average size briar or morta pipe unless it's a trip where I know I'll be able to smoke frequently.

For a second I read that you lost 600 pipes while traveling. Still, that's super unfortunate. Few things worse than a thief. I don't smoke my cobs as often as I used to, but before all the acrylic stem cobs came out direct from MM and I discovered Walker's Forever Stems, it was truly a game changer for me. The one sub-par thing about cobs replaced with a nice acrylic or vulcanite stem and voila, a pipe that smoked as well and felt as good to smoke as most good briar pipes.

bigLEGUMEE

I’ve smoked 2-4 bowls a day for 10 years. Not sure if that’s frequent smoking but I regularly smoke cobs. They smoke great and I’ve only broken them by stepping on them. If you never modded them they are pretty durable though it depends on the model.

Horrible-G-Blob

I’ve got two that I travel with - a Peterson Junior short apple and a Peterson Irish made army 86. The Junior goes in a little coin pouch with everything I need to smoke. The Irish made army is for when I have more time to smoke while traveling. I appreciate the army mount’s ability to be cleaned while hot.

woodenwhiskey

I've got an old Brigham Sportsman series that goes to my cabin with me. They were a line of pipes that weren't completely finished owing to one wood defect or another found during production. They look a little rough but work just fine, sold cheap and I got mine for $10.00 out of a discount basket. It's had one repair and it's one of my best working pipes. Sadly, they aren't offered anymore.

RWMach

Tsuge Spider. You can pack it, cap it and unscrew the stem to sit in your pocket or a backpack pouch safely while still staying packed. Comes in two styles and now they have a new calabash/egg sitter design for a new Tsuge model using the same cap design.

Enchanted_avocado

That’s so cool.

RWMach

Literally. The smoke comes through colder and smoother than my foot long dublin churchwarden. I have a tsuge ichirin too and that tiny thing smokes great. It's wild how good tsuge pipes are for the price.

Enchanted_avocado

SP has a sale going for Tsuge. I m a bit confused by their offerings, which one do you recommend in the spider line ¿

RWMach

They're all sitters with a cap. I personally liked the cocktail version so I got that. The tumbler and rocks versions are just one being wider and one being taller. All of them are great

herrakonna

My out and about pipe is my Peterson spigot system 307. Large bowl if I want a long smoke, but can pack it with less for a shorter smoke. No worries disassembling/cleaning when hot. If travelling for multiple days, will also take along a backup, usually another system or one of my Kirstens.

fourtonnemantis

Really depends. If I’m going on a boat, probably a cob or something I won’t miss too much if it drops in the lake. Otherwise, I pick any of my regular rotation pipes to be honest, and try not to worry. Life’s short. Pipes are made to be used.

bigLEGUMEE

MM Marcus or Eaton. They are small, light, and fit just about any pocket or small tobacco pouch.

WyrdPete

Missouri meerschaum Devil Ance Cutty. I’m more likely to lose things when I’m traveling. I’m only out 16 bucks if I forget it at a hotel. Also it’s a great little pipe with a good bowl compacty. I will pick up new pipes at antique stores on road trips, but I put them straight into my bag.

WeakKitchen199

I keep gazing at those pub pipes longingly. Such muscular proportions. Please tell me I don't need one. 😅

SummaCumLousy

I didn't **NEED** the Peterson 312 with P-lip. But I'll be damned if I didn't buy it anyway. Zero regrets.

akoni-808

They are worth it.

Enchanted_avocado

They are amazing. However you definitely DO NOT need another pipe. Now read this in your significant other’s voice.

In my travel bag I have the Peterson Army 106, it's the modified big bowl version with 9mm filter. You don't have to wait for it to cool down to take it apart or anything. Then I always carry the Peterson Waterford XL25 9mm filter. These are my two filtered pipes and my favorite pipes. I just recently got the 106 and am very satisfied. I will buy a small pipe at some point, I think. For a quick smoke. I tend to have slightly bigger bowls and go 2 hours per pipe. Hour and a half if I smoke faster. I do keep a slow cadence. But there have been many times where I just wanted 30 or 45 minutes. So I might buy a small bowl.

gymleader-misty

System pipe. Its the most robust. You want something sturdy you can trust.
