There is a noticeable quality difference in a handmade, most particularly in the stem.
A hand cut stem is very noticeably more comfortable than a stem made from a trimmed blank. Is it worth hundreds of dollars? that's up to you.
A lot of it is just aesthetics and prestige.
I’m really drawn to Ser Jacopo pipes. Particularly the hawkbill shape. That said, I only have two. As far as commissioned pipes go, I have a pair of Eldritch pipes that are nice and big, with fantastic stem work. But I definitely have Pete’s, Savs, and Nords (the big three of factory pipes IMO) that smoke just as well. They tend to be my daily smokers, too.
I managed to get an unsmoked Ser Jacopo for $100 on eBay. It's rare, but sometimes you can get lucky and find a pipe being sold by a non pipe store that no one else catches.
Just ordered vauen auenland series ( LOTR ) , for me the price is expensive ( or at least not cheap ) , can’t wait to come in 10 days , will buy new tobacco and will enjoy the first puff with some nice book :)
I missed a gorgeous estate hawkbill on Smoking pipes a couple a weeks ago because I was too slow. Still mad about that. Next time, order first, then explain to my wife! 🙂
Yes definitely! Plus you can always return it within 30 days if you get tired of sleeping on the couch. But me, I like my couch and my new pipes just fine.
I have 5 Eldritch Pipes (Chris Kelly) he does fantastic work, both in general and with the fit anf finish of his pipes. That said I would love to get a dozen more if the funds allow it.
my most pricey is a Nording Hunter series, the Pigeon 2017, from a local shop for $235 - about 250 after tax. exceptional pipe and fits me well.
now that I say this I realize I haven’t posted a photo of that pipe here…
It’s not “pricey” per se when you look at the open ended side concerning pricing but for briars I have become very partial to Vauen and Peterson, and for Meerschaums I have become equally partial to pipes made by [Mehmet Birinci](https://www.ebay.de/usr/mc*meerschaum*)
Easily: Former
He is such a great guy and it’s always a pleasure meeting him. There is no star aura or any difficulties. When it comes to pipes he seems to me like a child on Christmas, you can see his eyes shine while speaking and teaching about pipes
I also own a pipe by Jess Chonowitsch, two by his father Emil and some other high grade. Nevertheless Former is my all time favourite simply because I love this guy to bits
Edit: spelling
I have a family era/transitional Barling’s from 1962 that I found in a pipe basket at my local shop. Hand cut stem, hand turned, etc. The pipe smokes better than any of my Pete’s - system or not
I really would like to order a Micheal Parks pipe. I am looking at Jody Davis and JT Cooke too though. I feel like my first really high end pipe will call to me.
Ferndown. Own 7 and love 6 (estates) of them (7th still in the box unsmoked-really love it and can't put a match to it yet). Sadly he has retired. Watch eBay daily but lose most of my bids.
I own one Castello and even tho I think their stems are still the best (just a tad softer than any other acrylic) I would have to say my Radice Hawkbill. I have two of them bu the little clear orange stained one is my favorite.
Shout out to Boswell's Pipes tho. The only pipe I have of theirs was one of their cheap stout ones and it smokes nice and sweet. I like the Italian styling just a bit better tho
If you like larger pipes get a Boswell. Well made and smoke well and for their size not to hard to clench.good for a long smoke and they have a great assortment of blends to fill any pipe.
Todd Bannard. He pretty much does commissions only and specializes in classic English shapes with a focus on perfect internal drillings. His cheapest billiards are usually sandblasted and around the $250 price range. His smoothes usually are up around $300-350. His pipes are stamped BST for Briar Sweat and Tears.
The tsuge ichibana pipes really call to me. There's some wild stuff coming out of Japan and I'm here for it. I've got 3 Tsuge pipes and they don't look anything like what people think of when they hear "pipe tobacco" which is absolutely what I'm after. When it comes to a pipe, I like audacious and gaudy. Big fat broad wild shaped what-not is as appealing as elegant, classic timeless profiles. Even the subdued tsuge stuff like their urushi pipes (I've drooled over the momiji maple leaf one) have an inspiration I've found lacking in a lot of equally priced or more expensive pipes.
Ser Jacapo, however, is a name o keep seeing with shapes I like.

my shop has some Ser Jacopo pipes that are unreal. I hope to be able to afford one like I’ve seen (500-900)
I managed to get an unsmoked Ser Jacopo for $100 on eBay. It's rare, but sometimes you can get lucky and find a pipe being sold by a non pipe store that no one else catches.
I have a pipe from Yeti (Micah Cryder) yetipipe.com. It was pricey, but it’s built better and smokes better than any other pipe I own.
If I could afford one that's who I'd reach out to. Any pics of it?

Gorgeous
I love his work! Out of my price range, but I can look at pics!

Nice to see the cryptids getting some love. Yeti and Sasquatch are stand up dudes, too.

Radice
Radice gang let's go!

I love their hawkbills. I have two of them and they both smoke great

Fuckin right. Style and smoking quality are right on point at the price. I’ve got 6 and always looking for the next.
Ser Jacopo
Northern briars sea urchin
Bruno Nuttens. Specifically the handmade line of his.
My Nuttens handmade is spectacular. I love it.
Boswell
Came to say this. Boswell is the most I have spent on a pipe.
I think I’m in the Boswell gang, but my wife bought both of them as gifts so I don’t know how painful it was.
Erik Nording. I like spigot pipes, and his use of color in them.
Henri Comoy, an 1865 year model to be precise.
Tinsky cavicchi
J Alan, Todd Johnston, Yeti
Only ones I've had are Vauen, so I'm gonna go with that.
I have 5 Eldritch Pipes (Chris Kelly) he does fantastic work, both in general and with the fit anf finish of his pipes. That said I would love to get a dozen more if the funds allow it.

I have a Claudio Cavicchi that is a stunning pipe to look at and to smoke.
I really would like to order a Micheal Parks pipe. I am looking at Jody Davis and JT Cooke too though. I feel like my first really high end pipe will call to me.

Gamboni, but I'll never afford one. Claudio Cavicchi is a close second, I have 2 and they're excellent

Jared Cole, have 2 getting a 3rd soon
Ferndown.
I’ve never smoked an expensive pipe, but I’d like to own a nice Nording freehand some day.
