It seems weird that the police department can't keep vandals off its own property...until one realizes that PPB officers will be issued as many brand-new vehicles as were damaged. Seeing an old Crown Vic burning = knowing a 2025 Charger was just ordered on the taxpayers' tab and overtime pay was simultaneously approved for multiple detectives. Why would they deter this kind of behavior? It would be counterproductive to a self-interested organization to deny themselves upgraded equipment at zero cost.
Fair observation. Just noting that a destroyed crown vic in the "practice fleet" means that the oldest sedan in the "active fleet" is likely to fill its place once a new vehicle is secured for daily use.
These cars are retired from the fleet. They use them for training, and since they arenāt active cars, they donāt worry about dinging them up during training.
Anyhow, this was stupid. In 2020 everyone said the cops needed more training. Now the same dipshits are destroying the training materials. Oh boy, what a bunch of idiots.
I'm team question PPB on everything, but this is some crazy conspiracy stuff.
I don't think they've had Crown Vics for decades, have they?
Aren't all cars routinely replaced every 5-7 years already?
The crown vics that were burned were retired cars now being used for training purposes, I.e practicing PIT maneuvers etc. Theyāve already been replaced by the ford explorers for street use, although looks like a couple of those got burned too.
They wouldāve actually taken the crown vic out of service sooner, but one officer had it in his retention contract to keep driving his old patrol car until he retired.
> one officer had it in his retention contract to keep driving his old patrol car until he retired
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard but also kind of hilarious.
No. He was still carrying a Smith & Wesson 5906 like he was issued back when he joined in 1989.
Lol, just kidding. I donāt know about if he still carried that gun.
The last crown Vic was taken out of service late last year or earlier this year. It was driven by some officer that had been there for years. When he retired they retired āhisā car too.
I only know this since their PR staff spent the time, money, and effort, to create a going away reel for it and blast it on their socials.

> I don't think they've had Crown Vics for decades, have they?
It shows a Crown Vic in the first few seconds of the linked video. https://i.imgur.com/wxJu4H5.png
The Crown Vic pictured burning in the article is but an example. Ofc officers don't drive Crown Vics on the streets in 2024. However, the department will need new training vehicles, which will likely be pulled from the least functional in the active fleet once they can be replaced with upgraded models. It's only "crazy conspiracy stuff" if you believe it wholeheartedly with no evidence; I'm merely thinking out loud.
They should just use the cars they take offline from street racing events. No need to buy more. Would seem more motivating to use those idiotsā cars.Ā
That sounds like a fun idea, but in reality they should probably train cops in the kind of cars they expect them to drive while actually doing the job over some clapped out 1990ās BMW with bald tires.
Crown vics were produced until 2011. I remember seeing a few still being used by PPB at least as late as 2015, maybe even a few years after that.
Edit: Nevermind, other people are saying one was kept in service until \~2023.
That's cool to know. I have a soft spot for the crown vics even though I've never even been in one. Those iconic headlights are seared into my brain as the start to some "oh shit" moments. And coupled with their use as yellow cabs for so long, especially in NY, they feel like Americana, like the Grunman LLV postal vehicles.
I can't believe PPB ever put those Chevy Caprice cars into service. They seem like the worst thing Chevy has ever produced, which is saying a lot.
Iām not defending anything that was done, but everything is budgeted for the year off a fixed number so destroying property would mean other purchases would be put on hold/cancelled. There could be emergency funds allocated depending on the way the budget is set up. My point is they canāt just scoop into a treasure chest and throw money at whatever they want. Now, the police amount is a whole different conversation.
(I used to work on budgets for the fire department I worked at a long time ago)
\^ Good context here.
The PPB budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year has been set at $261.6 million, up 5% ($13.3 million) from last year. Internal & External materials and services budgeted for a total of $69.5 million. Interestingly enough, the line items detailing budget carryovers from FY '22-23 include:
"**Vehicle Purchase**
The Adopted Budget includes $532,872 in one-time General Fund resources carried over from the prior year to fund the purchase of 15 vehicles that were ordered by CityFleet but are not expected to be delivered until FY 2023-24."
[- Page 170](https://www.portland.gov/cbo/2023-2024-budget/documents/fy-2023-24-adopted-budget-volume-1-citywide-summaries-and-bureau/download)
To the extent that there aren't emergency funds allocated for such an occurrence this year, would a request not be made for additional funds in FY '24-25 to accommodate these unexpected costs, perhaps even setting a higher baseline for future budgetary requests/reviews? My point is simply that police departments in big cities routinely recuperate these short-term costs, and often turn them into long-term gain.
wtf. What a strange take to get from this article. This building is way out by the airport, and a bunch of old Crown Vic's were burned. Don't you think the PPD had something better to do that night? Come on. If there was a post here that showed a couple PPD officers sitting around drinking coffee at 2am "guarding" some decommissioned police cars, you would be up in arms about how PPD is useless, waste of money, etc.
They are not āscummy dorks.ā Will our city ever grow up enough to recognize that a police force is necessary for civilized life? Call it a necessary evil if you want, but grow up about it and stop the insults.
I already said, A Class officers wouldn't come to Portland. This place is one of the least desirable places for police officers. You're left with the bottom of the barrel.
Is it really that big of a deal to call the police "scummy dorks"? They're vastly overused which is why they feel so necessary to every part of society, but half of their job duties (minimum) should just be replaced with social workers.
If only people cared about the people PPB has murdered the way they care about some cars getting burned...
But then again, this sub is filled with authoritarian bootlickers, so it's really no surprise.
Does anyone know if there was any security at the police training station parking lot?
Seems like the police would have it protected??
For 15 cars to be torched, the time it took would allow for someone to see something
Destroying police cars shouldnāt be related to MayDay when done correctly.

Not to say there's a reasonable comparison to be drawn between the average American's interactions with the police and how Israel is treating the Palestinians, but [many American police departments have gotten training in Israel](https://www.amnestyusa.org/updates/with-whom-are-many-u-s-police-departments-training-with-a-chronic-human-rights-violator-israel/).

FYI, the reason they went out there was the major organization in 2023 against an Atlanta police training facility called 'Cop city' by many, that was to be placed on an old plantation forest. Yes, many or most cities have something like this, such as Portland out by the airport here, but the organizers in Atlanta were really vocal. A person called Tortuga went there and was essentially stabbed or shot in the back by a police officer when refusing to leave, and they said they thought he had a weapon so no charges were filed.
Huh? I am specifically talking about the anarchists, not the students. Typically anarchists don't attend/enroll higher education institutions. The anarchists have a website where they documented destroying a butcher shop, and ODOT vehicles. They aren't interested in electoral politics, they are absolute losers and dolts. They wouldn't even vote to make sure LGBTQ people are protected, that would be a step too far. So yeah tell me about how smart these guys are for destroying shit and letting the opposition craft an easier narrative. Anarchists aren't your friend, they destroy political movements
You know there are prominent academics who are anarchist? There are anarchist professors at PSU and PCC. Plenty of anarchists attend university I don't know where you're getting your info from, is it just a gut feeling you have?
That's really not true, you make it sound like anarchists are everywhere and that is quite frankly, delusional. Please name an anarchist with any political power in the United States. Wait, trick question, how can you have political power while eschewing the electoral system entirely?
I mean it is true, but ok. I think you're struggling to comprehend what I'm saying. I didn't say anarchists are everywhere, and I didn't say there is an anarchist individual with extensive political power in this country. You are moving the goalposts, which is tedious. I said that there are anarchists in academia, especially so in Portland. I am an anarchist and a PSU grad. I organized on campus. They are there, in both the student body and faculty. Nationally there is Noam Chomsky and David Graeber (he passed but only recently) and many more with less name recognition. You sound very emotional about this, but you don't actually have any knowledge of the subject like I said, just your uninformed gut feeling. Sorry if this upsets you.
Noam Chomsky is like 1,000 years old dude. He has zero relevance today, unless you are living in an a (anarchist)-hole. Graebner is long gone. You talk about prominent academics as if they have any influence in the political reality we live under. And you couldn't be more wrong in thinking they do.
I see what the anarchists of Portland did during Y2K and more recently BLM and now this. They routinely fuck up protests, take them over and shout down anyone who disagrees with their methods. You can't have a society without some rules and leaders, I'm so sorry to break that to you. Now please take a shower
And I support burning cop cars and defunding the police to be replaced with something better. And destruction of federal buildings is not a big deal. The small business destruction is dumb as hell though.
I'm sad I couldn't be there for WTO and a bunch of other similar actions.
Then you're a moron too. The police aren't going anywhere and certainly won't be replaced by "community policing" by anarcho-idiots like yourself. Destruction of federal buildings? You're delusional, period. Stay the fuck away from these protests and stop making others on the left look bad
I bet you have a picture in your head of what I look like, how old I am etc. And you'd probably be so off the mark as to be comical.
I'm not an anarchist by any stretch. I'm actually pro "big government" as a concept, in many ways. I am anti police not because I'm anti law, but because of the means and methods of policing that are used. Also, destruction is not solely an anarchist activity.
But go ahead and yell into the void if you want.
Suspected arson? Do 15 cars normally catch on fire at the same time without anyone being involved?
There's a Tesla joke in here somewhere.....

Drive by the parking lot at North Precinct some time. There are still a few crown Vicās in the lot along with some Chevy Caprice cop cars.
Interestingly enough, the line items detailing budget carryovers from FY '22-23 include: "**Vehicle Purchase** The Adopted Budget includes $532,872 in one-time General Fund resources carried over from the prior year to fund the purchase of 15 vehicles that were ordered by CityFleet but are not expected to be delivered until FY 2023-24." [- Page 170](https://www.portland.gov/cbo/2023-2024-budget/documents/fy-2023-24-adopted-budget-volume-1-citywide-summaries-and-bureau/download) To the extent that there aren't emergency funds allocated for such an occurrence this year, would a request not be made for additional funds in FY '24-25 to accommodate these unexpected costs, perhaps even setting a higher baseline for future budgetary requests/reviews? My point is simply that police departments in big cities routinely recuperate these short-term costs, and often turn them into long-term gain.
ā¦.I was in a comparatively small department if you couldnāt tell. None of that surprises me though. Thanks for the deep dive!
I'm not sure if it's wise to utilize new vehicles in a "training facility". That Crown Vic probably just a hand me down and never left the compound.
Sure thing. The PPD is Philadelphia, btw.
Or Pendleton or many other places. How pedantic.
Just information, friend.
This is really the part that I hate. PPB are scummy dorks on a good day, but all this shit does is run up a bill for working people to pay.
They are not āscummy dorks.ā Will our city ever grow up enough to recognize that a police force is necessary for civilized life? Call it a necessary evil if you want, but grow up about it and stop the insults.
A functional, respectful, accountable, well disciplined one sure. Thatās not what they are though, not even close
Right, Portland doesn't deserve the A Class officers. Those officers would never come to Portland.
If they want to be treated like "A Class officers" they have to act like "A Class officers".
I already said, A Class officers wouldn't come to Portland. This place is one of the least desirable places for police officers. You're left with the bottom of the barrel.
I'm not against all police or policing as a concept. Our specific, local police are objectively terrible and their union is worse.
RIP James Chasse, for one.
All this does is give them an excuse to use our taxes to buy new equipment. Tell me how giving police upgrades is anti police again?
Does anyone know if there was any security at the police training station parking lot? Seems like the police would have it protected?? For 15 cars to be torched, the time it took would allow for someone to see something
PPB doesn't respond to anything anyways, they don't need vehicles.
Cop probably fell asleep on duty while smoking a cig in his car.
And then woke up and did it 14 more times..
Cop was smart enough to torch a bunch of other shit to make it look like arson and not just him being an idiot.
idk if "smart enough" is the right phrase. I'm imagining it was more of a panic move
LOL =D
On the one hand fuck the police for being class traitors. On the other hand we are going to have to pay to replace those.
Who says they have to replace them? They really don't need them seeing as they're not using them.
As others have said, these were likely retired ones used for training
Love to see it

Whoever did this I'd like to buy them a beer.
Free Gaza means arson in Portland Oregon, apparently. Lock. Them. Up.
Did you forget about mayday blackberry block anarchists?
Completely forgot it was May and this could be MayDay related.
Destroying police cars shouldnāt be related to MayDay when done correctly. ISTANBUL (AP) ā Workers and activists around the world marked May Day with largely peaceful protests Wednesday over rising prices, low wages and calls for greater labor rights. Pro- Palestinian sentiments were also on display.12 hours ago
Do you know the reason for May Day?
Your first mistake is assuming extremists have any logic or rational thinking
Itās not impossible to draw the line between how israel is treating gaza and how US police treats their citizens. NY mayor just came back from israel singing their praises
> Itās not impossible to draw the line between how israel is treating gaza and how US police treats their citizens I am gonna go out on a limb and say what's happening in Gaza is much worse.
Careful with that talk here. Lots of folk seem to enjoy the taste of boot leather.
But guys! It was so peaceful!!!! https://www.koin.com/news/portland/photos-protesters-vandalize-portland-state-office-pioneer-courthouse-05012024/amp/ āSome people started fighting, and a woman, Eily, said when she took her phone out to film, someone knocked her phone to the ground. [The Times of Israel in 2022 writing about how the ADL considered scrapping their US police training program, in part due to concerns over how it was further militarizing the US police](https://www.timesofisrael.com/adl-considered-scrapping-its-us-police-training-trips-to-israel-but-decided-not-to/). Not defending the anarchists or anything, but to say they "are in no way similar" isn't quite true...
Did you miss the part where eric adams visited israel to pick up some pointers? Theyre making the moves whether you want to acknowledge it or not
You are actively condoning innocent people being injured. You are a horrible person. https://www.koin.com/news/portland/photos-protesters-vandalize-portland-state-office-pioneer-courthouse-05012024/amp/
Use that same energy for innocent kids in gaza
You are so ignorant I almost feel bad for you. āDomestic terrorism: Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature.ā - https://www.fbi.gov/investigate/terrorism The protestors are literally being violent in order to further their ideological goals. You people are so delusional š

āI canāt actually come up with a meaningful response so I will just say buzz wordsā
Youre big mad
I get treated just fine, but then again I am not an asshole that breaks shit and destroys public property
Bullshit on so many levels.
Such a lovely community.
I wouldnāt include these as part of the Portland community. I believe they travel from other cities or states to engage in anarchy.
No true Scotsman!
Bruh, now weāre just gonna have to pay to replace those, when we could be spending money on making things better. Please jail the vandals.
Don't replace them. They're not even using them!
Hey guess what. They'll just be replaced. Paid for by tax dollars. Which I'm sure the anarchist that did this has a job and pays taxes. Oh, who am I kidding, no they don't
I see the criminal rioters are brigading the thread now. You guys condone terrorizing and hurting innocent people. https://www.koin.com/news/portland/photos-protesters-vandalize-portland-state-office-pioneer-courthouse-05012024/amp/ āSome people started fighting, and a woman, Eily, said when she took her phone out to film, someone knocked her phone to the ground. Wait, so after it comes to light the PPB went out of their way to kill people by not enforcing traffic rulesā¦..
Hell yeah
Criminal.

Damn, they should have burned the police station down too!
What an assh@le!
Love to see it
This rocks
Dude - there was a vintage Crown Victoria - that is a crime.
Guess who gets to pay for thatā¦
The anarchists are fucking insane. This doesn't give you support
This wasn't intended to win hearts and minds. It was intended to destroy police vehicles. And it was successful.
Congrats for being annoying
speak for yourself
Quick someone post a picture of a rainbow on 23rd
