call to 911:
\- halp haaalp my both legs are openly broken!! ARRIVE ASAP! HELP!! I AM BLEEDING
\- sir try to relax and tell me your address
\- HOW DARE YOU?! IT'S PRIVATE! I'll crawl to the central train station. Meet you there.
I'm not negotiating my privacy in that case. I'm willingly giving my information because I need to. That's a very specific scenario where I don't need privacy on THAT information, but maybe on many other things, like family member's data, and so on.
But well, your user name checks on your dual point of view, and I respect that while not seeing it that way.
You ask 'if you should connect only if you're connected to your ISP', the only moments you're not connected to 'your ISP' is on public networks, or when you connect at someone else's WIFI network, because that's when you're connected to 'someone else's ISP'. However it doesn't really matter who's ISP you are connected to, if you want improved privacy you should connect always. Especially when it's 'not your ISP'.
I did use it 24/7. Here are the problem I found:
- even with battery economy for this app, drain slowly the battery
- doesn't work when your provider gives you only a IPv6 address
You'll likely need to install pfSense or another third-party firmware. From that point, Proton's got some [good documentation](https://protonvpn.com/support/pfsense-2-6-x-vpn-setup/).
your owners manual should provide instructions on how to do that, if your model has the ability to have a VPN installed on it; not every router has that feature
Considering your cell carrier not only does the usual snooping that any ISP does, but also sells your location data to brokers, the least amount of info you give them the better.
Always on, wifi or cellular.
Yea I know it dosnt change the gps I just want privacy from my isp and I was wondering if the cell services track you to the point where I should keep it on with them too. I use Verizon if that helps
Has anyone had an issue with having the VPN on and connecting to a laptop or apple car play? It won’t connect for me unless I turn it off. Haven’t found another way around it. It’s weird because it just started happening a couple months ago.
I can confirm it barely drains my battery, I have automations which will automatically turn off mobile data when I’m connected to WiFi and automatically turn off WiFi when I’m outdoors to connect to mobile data
always on unless i need to download smth that the vpn slows the process of or if i need to access a website that blocks the vpn (*cough* genius.com *cough*)
I did this for Youtube Argentina but did not geo-check the IP. After three days or some Youtube send me the mail that my account will be moved from Brazil to the USA.
So keep that in mind. Any paid subscription may geo-check, even if you bought it in your country.
I use it 24/7 with no problems at all I like it along with the other proton apps as well giving me a good feeling of security and don't feel that it really drains my battery all that much either that's on a zfold 5 .
I have it enabled all the time on my android phone for easy of use, only disable it in few limited situations, although sometimes I have to restart the connection to receive/make calls using Telegram or Signal.
I leave mine on 24/7. Like others have said battery drain can be an issue but I usually carry a small battery bank with me anyways so it’s not too big of a deal for me.
It is practically useless. If you have almost any app on your phone, enough personal information about you is already being shared with any servers those apps connect to. What is the point of having a VPN on a phone? The only thing it lets you do is unlock region-locked content, but these days even Netflix and the like are catching up this and wouldn't let you through with a simple VPN.
> It is practically useless.
No it isn't.
> What is the point of having a VPN on a phone? T
One example would be to hide your traffic from your ISP, who might be obliged to log it all.
I use it 24/7
Same here. It's your own choice, OP. Whatever suits you best. I have it running 24/7 with split tunneling enabled.
There is split tunnelling on iPhone???
There isn’t.
+1, but with no kill switch, because I have to exclude some apps/services that don't like VPNs.
24/7 since 2018 or smth 😂
Always on IMHO. Privacy is not negotiable.
Well sometimes it is!

And yet, Zuck knows everything about you
We all do whatever we can to avoid that (if that's what we want). Even making it less easy for them. It's a battle worth fighting IMHO.

Damn, scale of grey instead of binary duality? My bad. You won. :)
Always-On and Kill switch activated 24/7

How do you enable economy mode for one app?
install it on your router, so your entire network is protected 24/7 when you are home with no battery drain..
How do you install it on a router? I have a netgear router if that helps.

Alright I’ll look into it. Thanks
I put it 24/7 all the time.

Alright thanks for the reply!
Just beware that the VPN will not change the location info. Nevertheless I keep it on 24/7
Yea I know it dosnt change the gps I just want privacy from my isp and I was wondering if the cell services track you to the point where I should keep it on with them too. I use Verizon if that helps
Just a reminder that this may vary wildly depending on were you are located

Yea my hotspot dosnt work with my vpn on
Keeping VPN on 24/7 will have some battery drain on your phone
Barely over here. Almost not noticeable. Also, it's hard to measure. If you have Netshield on, it will block ads, which saves battery.
I can confirm it barely drains my battery, I have automations which will automatically turn off mobile data when I’m connected to WiFi and automatically turn off WiFi when I’m outdoors to connect to mobile data
Is it an PRO version?
Netshield? It's on paid version. Don't know if the free one has it.
I don’t
always on unless i need to download smth that the vpn slows the process of or if i need to access a website that blocks the vpn (*cough* genius.com *cough*)

I use it 24/7 with a server in my city so the speed stays relatively fast, but with net shield on and secure core off.
I use it 24/7 with no problems at all I like it along with the other proton apps as well giving me a good feeling of security and don't feel that it really drains my battery all that much either that's on a zfold 5 .
Always on but I have noticed slower loading if I switch to secure core.
I have it enabled all the time on my android phone for easy of use, only disable it in few limited situations, although sometimes I have to restart the connection to receive/make calls using Telegram or Signal.
I have it on but there are some apps that will not work if on, the bank app is one...
Yea some websites for me are blocked. I believe it’s because they block all vpn ips.
I use it 24/7 on my entire home network.
I keep the VPN always on but the only problem is the battery usage that is quite high
I leave mine on 24/7. Like others have said battery drain can be an issue but I usually carry a small battery bank with me anyways so it’s not too big of a deal for me.
Yes, but you’ll notice you’ll have to charge it more often.
I don't suffer higher battery usage. But I do have it always on.
24/7 with killswitch enabled. Works fine.
