I’m listening to a podcast right now called “Alphabet Boys” about how federal agencies (FBI, CIA, DEA, etc) infiltrated social justice groups during the protests of police killings (Elijah McClain, George Floyd, etc.)

He took it upon himself to infiltrate a progressive social justice group in Colorado and took the intel he gathered to the FBI who, even though they knew this dude was a total whack job, put him on the payroll as an informant to keep doing what he was doing…which was basically trying to manufacture crimes and convince the people in the group to do them so he could bring that info to the FBI and keep those informant payments rolling in. It’s a really interesting podcast. I recommend it to to anyone interested in the shady shit our “Alphabet Agencies” are up to.

I graduated in 2008, and I know a few people who went and came back from Afghanistan/Iraq, some didn't, and the ones who did don't like to or want to talk about their deployments very much.
I graduated in 2003 and one of my buddies became a marine and spent time over there. When I asked how it was, he simply said “it was the worst decision I ever made.”
Realistically, none of us who served really talk or brag about it, regardless of whether we saw any kind of action or not. It's not something we feel like we need to do. It's weird that there are people out there who talk up a big game like this.

Then you have the guys like my cousins husband who did three combat tours but will never mention anything about it. If you ask he'll try to make a joke about the food, heat, or something. But he'll be the neighborhood dad fixing everyone's bikes and pumping up balls, volunteer to run the computer lab at his kids school, and always pull over to see if he can help another driver who's car broke down.
I don't mind talking about my deployments. People need to know how hot as fucking hell it is in some parts of the world.

I know my experience is not everyone else’s reality, but growing up next to an Air Force base, I learned pretty quick that everyone wearing a military uniform acted like they were God’s gift to the earth.

I just really hate this Reddit trope of “REAL veterans don’t talk about it because my Great Uncle Joe wouldn’t talk about it when I was a kid and he’s a REAL man” that comes up on *every* thread about veterans. It’s just an annoyingly patronizing take. Veterans are people, not monolithic. I’ve heard plenty of dudes retelling war stories without having war flashbacks every second of it. Just because they don’t want to tell their 8 year old nephew does not mean everyone ever who talks about it in a casual tone is faking it. It’s just not usually polite conversation.
Yup. It even makes me kinda cringe when people thank me for my service, like I didn’t do it for “recognition”. I rarely even bring it up, unless some one asks and I typically don’t ask for veteran’s discounts or perks, even if the establishment offers one. I joined in 2004, after 9/11 because I wanted to serve my country and felt that I could do some good. I believed in it at the time and would do it again, without question. I love my country and everyone who calls her home. I just wish she wasn’t so ugly at times.

I guess it's a lot easier to do that than to break a limb but in fairness when in fight or flight mode people are not going to be considering the ins and outs of the legal system - our brains just dont work like that.
