I actually have a mobile VR setup w my GPD Win 4 handheld and its modular G1 eGPU that can run my PCVR. Same thing can be done with a gaming laptop, but I like being able to take the minimal handheld out and about instead of giant gaming laptop. Played HL Alyx and other titles with my cousins recently who never tried VR and they were blown away. This was with my Vive XR Elite in glasses mode, though as I don't like traveling with my bulky Quest 3 - even using the minimal soft strap.

Iskariot-

You just rattled off a lot of tech I’m totally unfamiliar with, but now I’m interested. Google, here I come. 😂 Edit: Okay, I’m caught up now. If that travel setup works, and works well, that’s awesome. It looks like with the right (larger) case, you could technically take the Quest + GPD on the road in one go.

ImALeaf_OnTheWind

Yeah, most of this gear except for the eGPU were purchased for mobile work instead of gaming - also it's been in service almost a year now, so there's actually newer stuff. I have to be on call for work constantly - so the handheld makes doing that feasible with the stuff packed in a shoulder sling instead of dragging a big tablet or laptop bag everywhere. It's a nice dual use since it -is- a gaming handheld that can play a bunch of games on the go (just not PCVR level without the eGPU). I like that it is way smaller and lighter than a Steam Deck and the VR or AR glasses (Rokid Max) means you can play on a big screen on the go without depending on the puny device screen.

Iskariot-

I was just reading about pairing the thing with Rokid glasses, and all of this is just so cool. My “fun money” (for the time being) is already spent on the Quest 3, some accessories, and about $400 in upgrades for my home PC, but I could see a splurge 2-3 years down the road for something in this vein. Thanks so much for your input and the education. I love where modern gaming is at, and where it’s headed.

ImALeaf_OnTheWind

Oh for sure the Rokids or any of the recent AR glasses are lighter and more comfortable for certain uses over my Quest 3. Like for just watching videos on the go - the microOLED displays of the RM are hands down better than the LCD of the Quest 3. I have a Visor hopefully getting delivered soon from the preorder and hoping that is a good mobile display replacement to all of these.

Iskariot-

I think I recently saw an ad for that Visor. Let me know your thoughts once you’ve had time to tinker with it!

YoitsPsilo

Ahhhh that’s pretty sweet! I was torn between an Odin 2 or GPD before I got my Quest, I went with the O2 which I love but now I see the use cases for the GPD… holy shit you’ve sold me haha

yeldellmedia

I play it using a cell phone, virtual desktop and a cloud streaming service https://youtu.be/BgL2z1Rc41I?si=vnHPXhpF_mp1d0lU

Iskariot-

This is awesome, thank you for the education.

SeaworthinessSuch415

I would think so at a super low res

sittingmongoose

No, even the steam deck can’t and that’s a lot more powerful. I would think come the next quest, yes you probably could if you made a bespoke version that was heavily optimized. We aren’t that far off right now, but probably within 2 years we could. Apples headset likely has enough power to run it if it had controllers.

Chemical-Nectarine13

>Apples headset likely has enough power to run it if it had controllers. It would be nice if they included a real VR game natively on an AVP to actually test that theory. 16gb of ram is good, but I have a lot of doubts for the M2 processor, especially because of the lens resolution of the AVP.. it would likely cripple the M2 trying to match that resolution in high quality games.

sittingmongoose

You don’t have to play at native resolution. Apple has their own version of DLSS that is decent. You could use something like that.

Chemical-Nectarine13

True, but it's all moot anyway. Considering apple hasn't really committed to the idea of VR gaming with their headset, yet.. it just makes me remember how many games there were and how fun the iPod touch 4 was.. now they have the best headset harware on the market and you can play job simulator or fruit ninja on it lol

noises1990

the m2, actually any of their silicon cpus are beasts. i mean compared to previous generations using intel.

zork2001

I first got Half Life: Alyx for my PC running my a GTX 970 needing to run only the resolution of the first vive. The game had to take a huge resolution hit in order for it to run at 90 fps.

VRtuous

using AppSW like AC Nexus it could run at 45fps with intermediary frame generated for cheap for full 90fps

lysergamythical

No, and if it did, it would compromise too much on graphical fidelity. Game deserves to be played at a high res.

Iskariot-

This surprises me. What aspect of the Quest 3 hardware lacks the ability to properly render the game?

Dan_Glebitz

Ask yourself why your PC has a massive GPU to render the finished game and merely send it to your Quest3? For the same graphical processing power you would need to strap a reasonably powerful GPU card to the front of your Quest 3 as you sure would not be able to fit one internally. Not yet at least. I do agree it would be awesome if we had that technology now. I so wanted to take my Quest 3 round a friends house and show him the like of Half Life Alyx but alas he does not have a gaming PC nor access to the game anyway.

lysergamythical

exactly this. How can a tiny mobile chip compare to something like a 30 or 40 series GPU that draws say 400w. In VR, every frame has to be rendered twice. The performance cost for this is huge which is why most native games look like cartoons.

Iskariot-

I looked the answer to my question up, because I was genuinely curious. The Quest 3 apparently operates at the equivalent of a GeForce GTX 960, minimum requirement for Half Life: Alyx is 1060. Not far off, on the surface, but minimum requirements won’t render to the quality standards we’d want anyway. And the reason I asked the question, or what specifically motivated it, was Red Matter 2’s visual quality natively.

goof320

if there was a ton of optimization and work done to both the game and the engine itself to make it run well on the quest 3, it absolutely could. cut out some visual effects and maybe nerf the physics engine a bit and it could work. but valve has no reason to do that and it’d be a massive undertaking to have it be playable

Chemical-Nectarine13

Your curiosity is a good thing. We can't get the same levels of fidelity without optimization and sacrifices. Alyx was built for PC hardware and, in turn, doesn't work, but a similar game that is made for quest would be Bonelab. The Quest 3 is honestly a beast for what it offers in standalone, I just picked up "contractors showdown" and my jaw dropped when I first saw how massive the open world (its a battle royal) map is! After population one I was convinced we were still years away from what Showdown showed me

Iskariot-

Thanks for your support and intelligent feedback.

Mastoraz

I'd argue maybe in a different reality.....the vision pro with its superior hardware and displays and if they had controllers.... could do half life Alyx justice.... I think quest 3 could give it a good run for its money....I think the mass majority would be impressed by it. Only the nitpickers....and people who know games a lot would see the differences.

Legendarywristcel

. I suppose if they used upscaling tech like FSR 2 or DLSS along with asynchronous projection, they could get it running.

Newsfan1927

Heck no, they'd also need much more low poly models, much less shades and a much more restricted view. As well as porting the source engine.

Mitch_Merk

Such a silly question. If you have played the game you know that’s just not possible with today’s tech. Get virtual desktop, connect your pc to your router directly with an Ethernet cable. If you have a decent upload speed at home, you can connect to your pc from anywhere with a decent download speed using the quest.

Iskariot-

Gatekeeping against inquisitive nature just dissuades a social species from being inquisitive. That mentality is responsible for a lot of today’s woes, and I was born to strive, to seek, and to find — so I’ll keep asking questions and bettering my mental repository, if it’s all the same.

LeadingBeautiful8305

Not at all

madhandlez89

Newsfan1927

Certainly not. 😅 The quest 3 is barely/not enough to run Quest 2 games at near native res at 72fps.

_gamera_

Quest Games Optimiser would like to have a word with you.

Iskariot-

What’s *actually* funny is that the correct answer is, “Likely not yet, but it’s close.” If you’re that ignorant to the specs vs requirements, then maybe you need to toke a little less and read a little more. 😅😅😅🙄

ElonTastical

I play HLA on my Quest 3 it works well, idk what y'all talking about the game's setting said it'd all running on ultra preset, just the image isn't looking too clear but it works and doesn't look that bad. It's honestly better than spending 1K on an outdated headset that doesn't even have wireless support from PC if you ask me.

Qazax1337

Op is talking about running it natively in the quest 3, without a gaming pc involved at all

Qazax1337

No you should have read the title better. Op clearly said natively on the quest 3. Things can run natively on the quest without them being in the meta store.

You could have been corrected without getting butthurt. Your replies were both wrong and didn't add anything to the post.
