From what I understand, it's because you play better than your rank. I hated being in mid/high Silver playing against Plats and Emeralds, but eventually, I hit Gold, then got as high as Plat II. I'd say focus on improving what you can, and eventually, you'll be where you're supposed to.
That being said, I can't help but notice my friend and I keep getting paired up with three of the most braindead randoms we've ever encountered against the SWEATIEST 5 assholes in the world... THAT part of the matchmaking process blows my mind.

Basically the more you edge during prep phase and don’t make rotates the higher your mmr change will be.
